No Matter The Elements
We Go The Distance H
ow does one of us end up in a wood yard with an 8° “wintry” mix swirling about? Even now when our editorial staff has a combined 145 years with our collective boots on the ground around the world, there are still some situations that surprise us. Or, in this case quite literally numb us. When Pinnacle Renewable Energy first appeared on the scene, Wood Bioenergy watched as the company grew in British Columbia and continued to add plant after plant to its growing roster. Since 2013 alone, Pinnacle has brought three plants on-line and taken over daily operations and the majority stake of a fourth. When CEO Rob McCurdy spoke at the Wood Bioenergy Conference in Atlanta last April, the Pinnacle story began to really capture WB’s resident industrial pellet specialist Jessica Johnson’s attention. Then, as we began to discuss the plants and profiles that will fill Wood Bioenergy’s pages in 2019, Pinnacle’s startup in Entwistle, Alberta was first up. Our top dog Rich Donnell promptly asked the staff who wanted to make the trip to northern Alberta in the winter. Everyone immediately looked at Jessica, knowing she would volunteer. And she did, to the peals of laughter from the rest of the staff. In the weeks leading up to the trip, regular forecast emails circulated, and bits of warm clothing were dropped on her desk. For Jessica it was a no-brainer and she jumped at the chance to go to northern Alberta in the winter—probably because she wasn’t thinking about the fact that it would be “way” below freezing. But that’s our Jessica; she doesn’t always think about the weather of the places she visits. She visited Drax’s newest startup in central Louisiana in mid-July when it was a frosty 105°. A little sweat never hurt anyone. Of course, when she made a frantic phone call back to the WB office in Montgomery, Alabama one morning
6
in early December, the rest of the editors did nothing but laugh again. The scene: A car so deeply covered in snow it was not drivable until hit with a shovel. A temperature gauge reading a brisk and blustery 8° Fahrenheit with a forecast showing a high of 10° for the day. The phone call, which was put on speaker, had a bit of a shriek-like feel to it: “Why did I think this was going to be a good idea. It’s way too cold! I am wearing two pairs of pants and I still can’t feel my toes.” Rich responded, in his usual unsympathetic manner: “Don’t get your tongue stuck to the catwalk.” But as the landscape of the 400,000 metric ton facility, bathed in a sheet of wintry mix of snow and ice, came into her camera’s focus a few hours later, she proudly knew she had the perfect shot, about the same time her nose had become perfectly numb. Once again, Wood Bio had gone the distance.

Next Enviva Mill May Be Lucedale In early January George County and Jackson County in Mississippi each voted to approve incentive packages, which are contingent on Enviva making a final investment decision to proceed with building a wood pellet mill at Lucedale and a shipping terminal at Pascagoula, respectively. The final investment decision may be made contingent on approval of all necessary permits, according to a statement by Enviva, which expects capacity to be consistent with Enviva’s other largescale production plants. “Although we are still proceeding through the permitting process and will shortly make a final investment decision, I can tell you that we are excited to build on our success in Mississippi by investing in new facilities in George and Jackson counties,” comments Enviva Chairman and CEO John Keppler, who notes that Enviva’s very first facility, a small plant in Amory, produced its one millionth ton of wood pellets in early January. “We are very grateful for the warm welcome and support we’ve received from state and county leaders, and we look forward to being good neighbors and contributing to economic prosperity in these counties,” Keppler adds. Enviva operates seven pellet mills with stated production capacity of 3.3 million metric tons and one is starting up this year in Hamlet, NC, which will add another 600,000 metric tons. On top of that, Enviva has announced it will increase production capacity by 400,000 metric tons between its plants in Northampton County, NC and Southampton County, Va. The company ships its pellets to overseas markets and has recently signed off-take contracts with Japanese customers. Enviva continues to look at other Southern U.S. sites for possible new plant construction.

in the news ■ Torrefaction Plant Begins Construction
Ligna Hannover Offers Multiple Events
New business Futerra Torrefacao e Tecnologia S.A. (Futerra Fuels) has started construction of its first commercial scale torrefied pellet production plant in Valongo, Portugal. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 120,000 tons of torrefied pellets and 55,000 tons of regular industrial wood pellets per year. The company reports that its torrefaction process is based on “swirling bed” technology. The plant in Northern Portugal is surrounded by eucalyptus forests that once served the pulp and paper industry. The total investment is €38 million. The successful commercialization of this new technology was designed and supplied by Yilkins B.V. of The Netherlands.
Ligna, the trade fair for woodworking and wood processing plant, machinery and tools, will present a wealth of innovations and applications for the entire wood industry May 27-31 in Hannover, Germany. Exhibtors will use 1.4 million sq. ft. of display space spread across 10 exhibition halls and an open-air site at the Hannover Exhibition Center. l “Access to Resources and Technology” is the focus theme for the 3rd Wood Industry Summit, which will be held in Hall 26. and Storage (BECCS) pilot plant at Drax Power Station in the UK has started. If successful, the six month pilot project will capture a tonne of CO2 a day from the gases produced when renewable power is generated using biomass at Drax—
the UK’s biggest power station, near Selby in North Yorkshire. BECCS is vital to global efforts to combat climate change because the technology will mean the gases that cause global warning can be removed from the atmosphere at the same time as electricity is produced. This means power generation would start to reduce the carbon accumulating in the atmosphere. Drax is partnering with Leedsbased C-Capture and is investing £400,000 in what could be the first of several pilot projects undertaken at the power station to deliver a rapid, lower cost demonstration of BECCS. Drax Power Station became the largest decarbonization project in Europe by upgrading two-thirds of its generating units to use biomass instead of coal and, if the BECCS pilot is successful, it will examine options for a similar re-purposing of existing infrastructure to deliver more carbon savings. The Royal Academy and Royal Society of Engineers have estimated that BECCS could enable Drax to capture 50 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year by 2050—approximately half the nation’s emissions target. Will Gardiner, CEO, Drax Group, comments, “It could enable Drax to become the world’s first carbon negative power station—something many would never have dreamed possible a decade ago.” Over the summer, work was undertaken to ensure the solvent CCapture has developed is compatible with the biomass flue gas at Drax Power Station. This was completed successfully along with a lab-scale study into the feasibility of re-utilizing the flue gas desulphurization (FGD) absorbers at the power station. FGD equipment is vital for reducing sulphur emissions from coal, but it is no longer required to control sulphur on four of the generating units at Drax that have been upgraded to use biomass, because the wood pellets used produce minimal levels of sulphur.

By Jessica Johnson ENTWISTLE, Alberta ome pellet producers have successfully used a “cookie cutter” approach to building successive plants. But for Canadian producer Pinnacle Renewable Energy, one size doesn’t really fit all nine. Following a March 2018 startup, Pinnacle’s Entwistle plant is now hitting its stride in the commissioning phase with production records being set regularly according to Plant Manager Marcus Ziesmann. Pinnacle Entwistle is the company’s first outpost in the western province of Alberta, targeting production of 400,000 metric tons of industrial pellets annually. Senior Vice President of Operations Scott Bax says that the key to Pinnacle’s success has been right-sizing their

plants for the areas in which they operate—taking the fiber basket and logistics into the equation. Almost every one of the nine plants is a different size. Technologies vary in the plants as well. For example, in the 125,000 metric ton Smithers plant, Pinnacle opts to run a bed dryer from Stela. In Entwistle, Pinnacle uses a single large rotary dryer from TSI. “When we look at where we put our facilities,” Bax continues, “we look at everything from how it can be integrated with local communities, the overall footprint of the plant and the size of the site to the proximity of local sawmills, optimizing our selections based on all those variables.” There are a lot of variables, given that just in 2018, in addition to the startup in Entwistle, Pinnacle started up a partnership pellet plant in Smithers, BC and purchased the majority of the Westervelt pellet plant in Aliceville, Alabama. Stated capacity for the nine facilities is 2.2 million metric tons. Entwistle represents Pinnacle’s first big leap into monster production numbers. Location certainly sets Entwistle apart, literally—over 1,350 km separate the facility from Pinnacle’s Westview terminal at the Port of Prince Rupert, BC and more than 1,000 km separate it from Pinnacle corporate headquarters in Richmond, BC. The hamlet of Entwistle isn’t that different from the other locations of Pinnacle plants, Bax admits, saying at the heart and soul of what drew them there was a surplus of sawmill residuals that were left without a market following the slowdown of oil and gas production in the region. “As our President and COO Leroy Reitsma says, ‘when I see a large pile of residuals, I see an opportunity.’ We were able to come in and enter into some long-term deals for the residuals. The sawmills had been stockpiling a fair bit,” Bax adds. Like all other Pinnacle pellet plants, Entwistle uses

Bax admits it’s a pretty significant advantage in cost for Pinnacle, as this method also keeps timing as efficient as possible. He says the reason the method is working so well is because of the production and distance. Bax says that during the first six months of the commissioning curve, Entwistle hasn’t had many major woes. He credits strong relationships with suppliers to help with debottlenecking, and making sure that automation, sequencing and flow are right. “So far it’s gone well,” he adds. “One of the biggest things we always learn during commissioning is The plant operates on 100% sawmill residuals. impact of extremely cold weather. Entwistle uses 10 Andritz LM26-IIs.
Pinnacle mills collectively operate the world’s largest number of Andritz pelletizers.
The furnace is a Sigma Thermal design 60 m2 reciprocating grate with primary and secondary combustion chambers to optimize combustion and minimize ash carry-over. It is designed to burn wet bark or other wet hog fuel and will automatically de-ash on a continual basis. The dryer is a TSI 22 ft. diameter x 100 ft. long single pass recycle dryer, which Bax says is quite large com-
pared with their other plants. The combination of the Sigma Thermal grate and TSI dryer recycle technology provides optimal performance in terms of BTU/lb of water evaporation. It also runs at very low oxygen levels improving safety; the O2 level in the drum during operation will not sustain a fire. The flighting design in the drum classifies the material as it dries making the outlet moisture tolerance very tight. On the back end of the system the TSI WESP is an upflow design with more than 1,000 large diameter stainless steel tubes, each with a high voltage rigid electrode that creates a charge in the airborne particulate as it passes through the tubes, causing it to precipitate out of the airstream onto the inner surface of the tube where it is periodically flushed out with heated water. The water is subsequently cleaned through a decanter centrifuge. This leaves an almost particulate free, very clean gas stream going out of the stack and is able to meet the strictest emission standards for particulate. Once the green fiber has been dried, dry shavings are conveyed into the mix prior to hammering. Bax believes having the product streams merge prior to hammering allows them to mix more effectively. The combined stream goes through Bliss hammermills. “We target an optimum particle size distribution,” he says, “which, depending on customer is about 92% less than 2 mm. We try to get close to that and let the pelleters do the rest.” Hammered material flows to one of 10 Andritz LM26-II pellet machines, including the 50th Andritz machine installed at a Pinnacle facility, making Pinnacle the world’s largest owner of Andritz wood pellet mills. In the pellet machine building, there is a space for an additional Andritz machine, should the market dictate a ramp up in production, Bax says. From the Andritz pelletizers, where pellets are brought to 6.5 mm finished size, pellets are cooled in Bliss coolers, conveyed

to final screening before being carried to Scafco storage silos and to rail load out. In order to maintain optimum quality and size, dies are
changed as needed with die life heavily dependent on the fiber mixture. All conveyors were supplied by Continental Conveyor.
The baghouse is a baghouse cycofilter, which Bax explains is a cyclone on the bottom and baghouse on the top. Large particles separate through cyclonic action and then the residual air, as opposed to just being emitted, goes through the baghouse and emits from there. “It’s actually quite effective,” he says. “It has a small footprint and is really efficient.” Pinnacle Entwistle makes use of GreCon spark detection, as well as SonicAire fans to help control combustible dust. Air systems were supplied by Allied Blower. CV Technology provided critical explosion protection equipment.
Owning Safety For Bax, the single biggest victory while building the plant was doing so safely, a huge testament to the construction teams. It was the first statistic the team at corporate looked at, and for Ziesmann it was the first victory the on site team looked at as well. Ziesmann adds, “It’s a core value. It’s who we are, but it also has

to be a personal value. We are interested in taking care of each other.” He leads the team under the guiding idea “I watch your back and you watch mine,” and believes that reminding everyone safety is about making sure they get to go home to their families is a great motivator. In addition to making sure plant employees are invested in the safety culture, Pinnacle built Entwistle with engineered solutions to stop, mitigate or otherwise minimize potential for issues. Bax says leaning on CV Technology for explosion suppression and explosion isolation design and engineering of solutions was a huge leap forward. He believes that understanding the inherent risks of combustible dust and realizing engineered solutions is one part of creating a great safety solution for a facility. “Clearly the training and competency of
24
your people understanding the risks is really important,” Bax adds. “For us it has been really powerful.” Bax echoes Ziesmann that really the people are what make Entwistle special. “In the end you can have all the best equipment in the world but it comes down to your people. Putting a lot of time and energy into competencies has been really important. We are fortunate to have an amazing workforce in the local area and 85% of all of our employees are from 30-40 km away.” The heart and soul of the safety culture at Pinnacle is called “Owning Safety.” The company believes that means every single person in the organization has a true ownership in not only keeping themselves safe, but also other people safe.

2018 In Review
Pellets Trade Soared By Seth Walker
F
rom 2014 to 2016 the growth in global wood pellet trade slowed to 7% per year, accompanied by a low pricing environment and limited capacity expansion. In 2017, market conditions greatly improved and global trade increased 13% to 18.9 million tonnes. That market improvement continued in full force through 2018 as the growth in global pellet trade accelerated to 26%. FutureMetrics projects 2018 pellet trade will have increased to 23.8 million tonnes in 2018 up from 18.9 million tonnes in 2017 (Figure 1). That growth is primarily fueled by increased demand in the UK, Denmark, South Korea and Japan. This article provides an overview of global pellet trade in 2018. A full five-year demand outlook is included in the Q4 2018 issue of FutureMetrics’ North American Pellet Market Quarterly.
United Kingdom In 2018, UK pellet demand increased with the commissioning of EPH’s 396 MW Lynemouth Power Station conversion and the conversion of a fourth unit at the Drax Power Station. 2019 growth will be primarily driven by a ramp up to full operation at Lynemouth and increased availability at the Drax power station. In 2020 UK demand will increase again with the scheduled commissioning of MGT’s 299 MW Teeside CHP plant.
Denmark The consumption of wood pellets in Denmark ranges from individual appliance users to small district heating plants to industrial scale CHP facilities. Much of the recent growth has come from the conversion of large central power stations from coal to biomass. Denmark has nine central power stations, several of which have al-
26
ready been converted to biomass. Denmark has committed to phasing out coal by 2020, which will likely mean several more unit conversions. However, the additional facilities will likely be converted to wood chips or other forms of lower value waste. The majority of future wood pellets demand growth in Denmark will come from smaller-scale district heating and continued growth in the residential sector.
Belgium Belgium’s industrial wood pellet demand has remained relatively stable over the last several years as there are two power stations fueled by wood pellets, both operated by Engie Electrabel—the 80 MW Les Awirs and the 205 MW Max Green power station. The increase in pellet imports seen in 2018 is likely reflective of a higher capacity factor at the biomass plants due to strong electricity markets, and improved conditions in the domestic heating market.

Netherlands The Netherlands has a history as a major market for industrial wood pellets. In 2010, the Netherlands was the biggest market for industrial wood pellets—used for co-firing to meet renewable energy goals. The market rapidly declined when a new renewable energy subsidy scheme was introduced in 2012. The scheme required the development of new sustainability standards before biomass co-firing could qualify for subsidies. In 2016, subsidies were awarded for co-firing at four power plants: RWE’s Amer and Eemshaven power stations, Engie Rotterdam and Uniper Maasvlakte 3 (MPP3). Unit 9 at the Amer power station, which had previously co-fired under the old subsidy scheme, resumed co-firing of significant amounts of wood pellets in the fourth quarter of 2018. The other plants will likely begin co-firing in 2019 and 2020.
Italy Italy is unique among major importers of wood pellets in that the Italian pellet market is primarily for home heating as opposed to industrial use. Italian pellet imports were well below highs seen in 2014 due to warm winters and lower prices for competing fuels like heating oil. Volumes recovered significantly in 2017 and, in the first eight months of the year, 2018 imports were 29% higher and on pace to break previous records set in 2014.
Other Europe There are several major pellet markets in the EU that are not represented in trade data because they are primarily self-sufficient in producing the majority of pellets that they consume. For domestic heating, these include Germany, estimated at ~ 2 million tonnes, and France, Austria and Sweden, estimated at ~1 million tonnes each. Sweden also has a significant industrial market at small and mid-sized heating and CHP plants. We expect continued modest growth in these and other smaller heating markets in the coming years.
Japan Japanese wood pellet imports were on pace to exceed 1 million tonnes in 2018, approximately double the amount of imports from 2017. Through the first three quarters of 2018, 63% of Japan’s wood pellet imports came from Canada and 31% from Vietnam. Due to the fixed price and long contract length of the Feed-in-Tariff subsidy that supports renewable energy in Japan,
long-term contracts from strong counter-parties, like those in Canada and the U.S., are the preferred form of procuring wood pellets for most Japanese buyers. We expect to see continued rapid expansion in Japanese wood pellet imports in the years to come.
South Korea While the Japanese market has captured most of the attention of North American producers and European buyers of wood pellets, South Korea has quietly become the second or third biggest wood pellet market in the world (after the UK and very close to Denmark). However, unlike Japanese buyers who look for stability and long-term contracts, most of the pellets currently being traded into South Korea are on a short-term or spot basis. South Korean utilities, who co-fire wood pellets to help meet their renewable portfolio standards (RPS), are much more price sensitive due to the nature of their business. South Korean demand is largely responsible for the rapid development of wood pellet production capacity in

fine equal to 150% of the average REC price during the year. Due to uncertainty regarding the value of RECs, the price of power and the price of pellets, South Korean buyers have a more difficult time entering in to long-term contracts. Nevertheless, there have been instances of successful contract negotiations with North American producers, particularly with dedicated biomass plants (as opposed to major utilities co-firing at coal stations).
Conclusions
Southeast Asia. In 2018, South Korea’s wood pellet imports are projected to reach 3.4 million tonnes, with more than 95% of that volume coming from Southeast Asia. In South Korea, renewable energy is promoted by an RPS that requires an increasing amount of their energy to come from renewable sources. Tradable Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are used to demonstrate compliance. Utilities have three ways of meeting the RPS: produce RECs themselves, purchase RECs on an exchange, or pay a
28
Pellet markets are on a robust upward trend with continued growth in Europe and a maturing set of trade flows in the Pacific basin. In addition, producers have taken a more cautious approach to development over the last several years, allowing supply and demand to move towards re-alignment. While there are still risks, like policy uncertainty, competing fuel prices, and dependence on weather, overall the industry is in a very strong position moving in to the early 2020s. n the quest for inexpensive feedstocks in a circular economy, forestry biomass can play a pivotal role in chemicals and fuels production. Global energy use is rising with population growth and increased consumer demand, resulting in the necessity of use of alternative feedstocks other than fossil fuels. Renewable energy offers a solution to deal with the
concern about carbon dioxide emissions, and its production. Biomass—the solid matter in biological organisms—can be converted into biofuels, heat and power, and biogas. Bioenergy from forest biomass can play an important role in combating climate change as well as improving the bio-economy. While economic and practical realities will limit the rate and extent of change possible, there is substantial amount

of valuable residual and technology available for improving the overall output of bioenergy. Today, industrial developments in cooperation with governmental incentives might enhance the bio-economy. Forestry biomass could contribute by increasing renewable energy resources and reducing competition between agricultural crops destined for food and those for fuel production.
During thermochemical processing, biomass undergoes various chemical reforming processes that convert longchain organic compounds in the biomass to short-chain oxygenated hydrocarbons. Thermochemical conversion can be achieved through pyrolysis resulting bio-oil, biochar, and gases from wood, liquefaction resulting bio-oil, and gasification leading to syngas. In addition, forestry biomass has a huge potential to improve the economics of current biorefineries as it can be converted biochemical (enzymes and microorganisms) to biofuels (e.g., biooil, ethanol, butanol, and syngas) and biochemicals (e.g., organic acids, Figure 4. Potential applications solvents, biolubricants, and adheand end-products of forest resives). Recently, sources in various sectors woody biomass has also found applications in production of advanced biomaterials such as carbon fiberss activated carbon, and bioplastics for multidisciplinary applications.
Forestry Biomass Lignocellulosic forestry-based biomass mainly comprises residues from harvest operations as well as from manufacturing and construction activities. Lignocellulosic materials typically contain 30%-60% cellulose, 20%-40% hemicelluloses, and 15%-25% lignin (on a moisture-free basis) that could be converted to renewable fuels and chemicals.
Figure 2. Total energy potential from different types of forest biomass (MToe) for EU
Forest biomass represents a valuable feedstock due to its chemical composition and can be supplied globally. Forestry wastes like wood chips, branches and sawdust have also been used as biofuels feedstocks.
Applications Forestry resources are useful not only for industrial and agricultural applications, but also from a bio-fuel, -chemical, and -material perspective. Forestry biomass can be converted into valuable products with several techniques.
32
Conclusion The pursuit of future bioenergy systems that can meet electricity demands while supporting the attainment of societal environment goals including mitigating climate change and reducing pollution in the air has led to questions regarding the viability of continued use of agricultural crops and fossil fuels. Forestry residues are promising resources for producing next generation biofuels, and hence significant efforts must be invested in their efficient use and conversion. infrared spark and flame sensors for industrial applications. An industry exclusive self-monitoring optics feature provides “through the lens” testing for each detector in real time to immediately alert the user of a reduction of detector capability caused
by damage or lens contamination. Wiring requirements are minimized by the new design, which allow up to three remote sensors to connect to a field mounted control unit. The control unit offers a retrievable lifetime memory function and provides external LEDs to indicate the functional status of each detector. YMX 5000 is suitable for installation in an extremely wide range of operational temperatures (-40° F up to 221° F) and therefore increases its applicability in areas where other detectors may not be appropriate. The increased viewing angle of the detector enhances the detection capability and often reduces the number of detectors required for effective monitoring of a given area. Detectors are protected by robust stainless steel housing and utilize a field removable lens. The detector mounts easily and securely to facilitate installation and maintenance in-
spections. EX versions for Class 2 Division 1 hazardous areas are available. FM Global Approved. Visit sparkdetection.com.
