If there’s one winery you must visit in Tuscany, it is Antinori nel Chianti Classico (www.antinorichianticlassico.it). Antinori is one of the biggest names in Italian wine, but it’s not just the vino that draws visitors here. Essentially, this winery is the Antinori family’s homage to the territory of Chianti Classico, a confirmation of the historic ties to the family’s place of origin. It is unique in Italy in its type: constructed with local materials and with the maximum respect for the environment and of the Tuscan landscape. Start with Florence. Spare a day here to see the world-famous Renaissance works of art including Michelangelo’s David at Galleria dell’Accademia and Botticelli’s Birth of Venus at Uffizi Gallery. The city also offers lovely cobbled streets that open up into pleasant squares, historic churches and monuments including the famous Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore. Also, don’t miss the photographic opportunity at Florence’s oldest and most photographed bridge, Ponte Vecchio.

Once you’ve wrapped-up your Florence tours, embark on a trip to Pisa, the second must-see city in Tuscany.

Pisa is perhaps mainly famous for the intriguing Leaning Tower of Pisa situated in the fascinating Square of Miracles (Piazza dei Miracoli), but the city’s real charm is in its hushed streets, which you will not discover if you restrict your visit to the square.

There’s so much going on in luxury the travel market from bespoke to experiential travel to private escapes, what trends you are seeing today?

Seven years ago it was seen as a sign of success to brag about the number of cars you owned, the number of seats on your private jet or the length of your private yacht. Now discretion is the name of the game. Private aviation has continued to grow steadily since 2007, but it is not spoken about anymore. People are more private.

Middle East travellers often like to stay in established five-star hotel chains and the challenge for us is to educate the market about the luxury lodges and boutique hotels in New Zealand, which introduce a new style of luxury hospitality.

This is also quite a young market when it comes to outbound luxury tourism. Many travel companies offer luxury holiday packages based on the number of stars a hotel has, but very few go beyond and create a bespoke travel itinerary that is tailored to their customers’ needs.

Chanel’s Cruise to Dubai For the Chanel Cruise Collection 2014/15 show, Karl Lagerfeld led about a 1000 invitees including celebs Tilda Swinton, Alice Dellal, Janelle Monae (who had a pocket performance at the event), and actress Dakota Fanning to Dubai for a fashion extravaganza held on an island facing the city’s magnificent skyline.

Gold, glamour and eastwest-fusion were some of the keywords, or hashtags, that described the collection which was daring yet sensitive to region’s cultural colours, mainly featuring retro trousersuits and flowing kaftans in mosaic patterns and layered tweed mix with embroidery and Bedouininspired cuffs and necklaces.

One of the great joys of travel lies in the anticipation. It is the preparation. It is the journey not the destination. Years ago luggage was more than merely utilitarian… it told the story of its owner, of its many voyages. It bore the stamp of all the beautiful cities visited. Long after those travellers are gone, their luggage continues to afford us glimpses into their lost world. As modern travellers, we would all like to find luggage that embodies old-world elegance whilst also being practical. We’ve taken a survey of some of the most illustrious luggage brands on the market today and here are some of our favourite finds.

The Grande Dame of luggage: Louis Vuitton In 1837 Vuitton started as an artisan suitcase maker for the French aristocracy. In 1853 he began crafting packing crates for Napoleon’s III wife, Empress Eugenie. They were used for the shipment of clothing between the Tuileries Palace, the Chateau de Saint Cloud and various seaside resorts. By 1854 he’d opened a store in Paris boosted by the advent of the steam engine. He innovated and replaced the leather on his suitcases with waterproof cloth, an audacious move at the time, his son created the infamous monogrammed initials and a legend was born.

The Indestructible Rimowa Founded in 1898 in Cologne, Rimowa immediately became the top choice for society travellers. In 1937 the son of the company founder launched the first steamer trunk made of lightweight metal. Hitherto, suitcases had been made of wood and the switch to lightweight metals caused a minor revolution in the luggage industry. In 1950 the first case was made from aluminium with the sleek contour that has now become synonymous with the brand. This design combines minimum weight with maximum stability. Moynat – A New Star in the Parisian Luggage Firmament Moynat was once the most luxurious Parisian suitcase manufacturer of the 19th century. Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH the world’s leading luxury group, ever on the lookout for new enterprises decided to bring the label back to life in 2010. For more than 100 years, from 1869 to the mid1970s, Moynat catered to the carriage trade from a Paris shop located on Avenue de l’Opéra, offering all manner of trunks, hatboxes, fitted cases and hand luggage: first for horse-drawn conveyances and trains, and later automobiles.

In 1976 the brand fizzled out, passing hands from owner to owner, until LVMH brought its elegant lustre to the brand.

Made to measure suitcases, bags, and accessories in all styles form the staples of the re-emerging brand. The entry level price for Moynat begins at 1000 euros, setting the tone for the status of the label.

THE RE-CREATION OF HAIR & JEWEL Graff recreates the iconic Hair & Diamond image with half a billion dollars of jewels

In 1970, world renowned diamantaire Laurence Graff OBE created Hair & Jewel, an ornate coiffure comprising one million dollars of diamonds and precious gems. The key to mastering it all elegantly: a dual time zone watch! Here’s a selection of jetsetter worthy pieces that will help you tell the time accurately wherever you are, whilst making a personal statement.

Greubel Forsey GMT From the way it looks with its unusual curves, to the way it is built with its many complications and novel features, and finally the way it fits your wrist – the Greubel Forsey GMT is truly one-ofa-kind. This is a piece for the nonconformist jetsetter!

The dial features three GMT displays: the main time display (positioned slightly to the left, on the dial); a secondary time zone found at 10 o’clock, and an ultra-miniature globe with continents mounted at 8 o’clock, which shows how the earth rotates and the time moves. It’s probably a little too miniscule to distinguish more than the continents, but it brings a lot of character to the dial and it’s simply beautiful.

At 5 o’clock there’s a 24-second tourbillon which is set at a 25° angle; the tourbillon cage has 87 parts, whilst the complete movement is made of 443 parts. At 3 o’clock there’s a power reserve indicator (up to 72 hours), and at 2 o’clock there’s a small seconds display. All these exceptional display features are underneath an asymmetrical convex sapphire crystal (difficult to produce) and encased in 43.5mm.

The see-through case back is almost as exciting as the front: it features a 24-hour disc, with one city for each of the time zones around the world, from NYC to Sidney. There’s even a summer time indication via the smaller disc at the inset, a day-and-night indicator, and, on the side of the case there’s a tiny window so you can peek into the southern hemisphere.

Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Time Zone Luminous The Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Time Zone Luminous is one of the finest watches in the world, mixing technical brilliance with design simplicity. The case shape is perfectly sized and finished; the display is clean and balanced, despite its myriad of hands, dials, indicators and apertures; the strap and buckle feel just right. It looks refined yet robust, the perfect choice for the casual jetsetter.

The main dial, at 9 o’clock is the time zone that should remain constant as the home time. The second time zone is in a small secondary dial at 4 o’clock. This time zone may be changed with the push of a button, which moves the hour and cities ring forward. At 5 o’clock in the secondary dial there is a city indicator so you can tell the time at a glance in every time zone. It sounds pretty busy, but, surprisingly, the dial looks clear, big and bright. The silver surface, the white gold hands with luminous filling – it all glows in the sunlight.

What makes the watch extra special is Lange’s movement, caliber L031.1, made of three-quarter plate untreated German silver, and featuring some 417 different components – screwed gold chatons, twin mainspring barrel (for a 72 hour power reserve) and two hand-engraved cocks (the traditional balance wheel cock plus an intermediate wheel cock).

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Art deco design; dressy stylish look; slim, polished rectangular-shaped case; and a proprietary, well-engineered flipping mechanism; Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso is, arguably, the most elegant of Swiss watches. It was custom made in 1931 for British polo players in India, who needed a watch they could wear while playing, with as little damage as possible. That’s how the Reverso case came about: a polished piece of metal that can be flipped over in order to protect the breakable glass crystal.

In the 80 years that passed since its launch, the flipping mechanism became smoother; the plate was used for custom engravings and enamel paintings; and the watch itself was redesigned in many sizes and styles: the super-sized Gyrotourbillon II and Triptyque, the square Squadra and, the glamorous jetsetter’s favourite, the Grande Reverso Duoface.

Moreover, a new movement was created – the Jaeger-LeCoultre caliber 986 manually wound movement, with a power reserve of 48 hours - so that the watch could have two dials, like the Duoface, where each side could be set for a different time zone. One side displays the home time and features a day/night indicator. The other side displays the time with subsidiary seconds dial and an open-date indicator.

IT’S AN ART THAT I CAN’T PULL MYSELF OUT OF, HENCE MY LABEL SLOGAN: “MY DESIGNS CAN MAKE A BEAUTIFUL ART PIECE FRAMED ON A WALL.”

What sparked your interest in fashion and how did you come to start your own line?

I have always had a strong passion for art. I believe that there is art in everything; I see art all around me. I also adore all things vintage and take pleasure in examining objects, patterns, and artifacts with great historical value. I am a self-taught fashion designer and received no formal training. I started by designing dresses for family members and launched my first tailoring shop in 2003. Within a year, I launched my first ready-to-wear collection of 2004, in which fifty limited pieces sold the same day. Gradually, my tailoring shop evolved into FB Boutique.

With trends influencing how women dress, how do you manage to stay true to your vision?

As I mentioned before, if the trend goes right, I go left. I can’t help it. Ladies in the UAE are so educated in fashion and what’s trending nowadays, and I can’t force them not to follow it, but this is my advice: don’t follow the trend, wear what suits you. You will see that if you wear what suits you, it will become the next “trend”.

Where do you find inspiration?

Nature. I get my inspiration from nature, anywhere and everywhere. I see a tree and make a lively green dress; I see the sky and make a silky blue dress. I simply work on the spot without prior preparation. It could be when I’m hurt, happy, or angry. My mood controls me sometimes, I dare to confess.

How would you describe your label, and who is it for?

My label and style is for lovers of all things unique.

It’s essentially a mixture of the traditional and modern style; a special combination that appeals to both eastern and western buyers. But my main audience is mostly Arab ladies who are keen on preserving their classic traditional style while simultaneously displaying a taste of modernity.

The cultural heritage of the UAE is very important to your creative process. How important is the Western perspective to you?

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan – may his soul rest in peace – once said: “Who doesn’t have a past doesn’t have a future”, so I tightly guard my past, my country, region, and heritage. I love it and passionately incorporate it my work, for it is so rich and deep. Yet I do acknowledge the fact that we have to move forward, be at pace with the world in order to never be far behind. I believe in finding a personal balance between being a heritage guardian and also a future thinker. I think the unique mix between heritage and contemporary styles is what gives my designs such high demand.

Tell us about your design aesthetic. What colours and materials do you find yourself drifting towards?

I am very messy in a creative sense. I rarely prepare or pre-plan a style or design for a collection. I never follow fashion trends, a perspective some might not agree with, but I prefer creating my own trends by merging different styles and producing unique mixes, making my pieces timeless and appealing to all ages. I follow my feelings for the colors I work with. I have been using the same palette of color for years now and so far so good – my pieces are in demand. I create my signature collections from fabrics which I dye and work with myself, creating patterns and color combinations that reflect my emotions. It’s an art that I can’t pull myself away from, hence my label slogan: “My designs can make a beautiful art piece framed on a wall.”

Tell us about your next collection.

To tell you the truth, I’m not quite sure what it is going to be like in terms of colours or style, but I can confirm that it’s not going to stray far from my Arabic traditional heritage style.

With the start of the day sorted, thoughts turn to the end of the day – and dinner plans. But as Banyan Tree is justifiably famous for its flowering culinary tradition, we were not worried about a food and beverage shortage, even though we were surrounded by the vast wilderness of the desert.

And as one would expect, Al Wadi presents a number of bespoke dining experiences which include a private outdoor barbeque amidst the dunes, and international fare and local Arabic specialties served at Al Waha Restaurant; but we have to say it was the ‘Authentic Thai’ at Safran Restaurant which watered our appetite the most. Thai food at Safran really is an art form with Thai delicacies served in an ultra-romantic setting. Moreover, the romance is heightened atop the Safran Tower, a small watchtower where a dedicated chef and a butler serve up an intimate moonlit dinner for enchanted couples.

After-dinner drinks are best had at Moon Bar located on the roof terrace of Samar Lounge. With a shisha in hand, this is the perfect vantage point to take in the stunning views of the sprawling desert under a starry night sky and lounge in the after-dusk desert breeze.

Design Figure Perla Lichi: 30 Years of Inspiring Design

The first half of her 30th year in business has been an extraordinary time for Interior Designer Perla Lichi. In April she was honoured by her peers in the Design & Architecture Awards Program of the Florida Atlantic Building Association with 29 interior design awards, and a Best of Show for her treatment of a South African estate home. She was recently awarded a “Best of Houzz” badge by the leading online platform for home remodeling and design. Two of her estate home projects have been shortlisted in the prestigious International Design and Architecture awards program sponsored by London-based Luxe et al Magazines.

Eric Peyret presents his urban scape paintings of Dubai at Fann-À-Porter

Visual art as a form of expression is probably just as old as human kind itself. Today, some decide to take pictures using modern technologies while others stick with the more traditional of ways… Eric Peyret’s talent is capturing the narrative essence of a place by painting it on canvas. As he wanders through different cities, Peyret paints their bright nights, roads, metro rails, billboards, and everything that defines them. His latest paintings are of the urban scape of Dubai.

Born in Pau, France in 1964, Eric Peyret is a graduate of the Higher Institute of Decorative Painting in Paris. He began his career as an artist with the production of large-format murals on wall panels in Italy, the Middle East, Australia, Brazil and the United States. However, since 1998, he has been devoted to painting on canvas.

From the traditional concept of the ideal city of Italian Renaissance, Peyret wants to show the city as an objective object of beauty in which one can travel between shapes, volumes, graphic elements, lights and shadows, horizontal and vertical dimensions. His work is tribute to people and the culture in which they live.

Throughout July, Eric Peyret will be exhibiting his lastest work at Fann-À-Porter Art Gallery located in the lobby area of the Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates. “FannÀ-Porter”, which translates as “art-to-go”, launched its gallery space in Dubai earlier this year with the goal of bringing a host of international talent to display their collections on a monthly basis with a full year calendar in 2014/15.

Peyret’s love of classical and contemporary architecture inspired him to turn to more personal work in which he seeks a combination of more realistic figuration and a geometric abstraction induced by the theme. He treats urban life as one might have treated the ideal city during the Renaissance, by adding humanity through colour, atmosphere and balance without necessarily having the explicit presence of people.

His moves about cities is an attempt to build links between figuration and certain type of geometric abstraction showing the parallelism between urban structure, human urban structures and human intern structure, the interactions between the people and their urban environ-

SILENCE IS GOLDEN World’s quietest luxury yacht: Cacos V Yachting is all about comfort, luxury and relaxation. Cacos V measures-up to these aspects, but what it really standouts at is noiselessness.

Built by the Italian shipyard Tecnomar Admiral, this 40-meter, all-aluminium mega yacht has achieved the highest standards of noise and vibration ever recorded by Registro Italiano Navale (RINA), the marine classification society. The vibration level recorded at cruising speed in the owner’s suite is only 0.2 mm/s, while the noise level is 49.1 dB, well below average levels usually observed (up to 25% and 80% noise to the vibration). But don’t let its quietness fool you; Cacos V is a swift performer. Powered by two MTU engines of 1920hp each, she can reach a maximum speed of 21 knots.

Cacos V is also a jewel in design innovation. Designed the naval architect Luca Dini in cooperation with the Group Style Center, Cacos V has great spaces for her category. With a 479GT volume, it boasts the record of being the 40 metres motor yacht with the biggest internal volume ever. She can comfortably accommodate up to 12 guests in five spacious cabins.

Strong personality is another standout feature of this yacht. The external gleanings and the shiny/matt colour contrast of the hull increase the stylistic appeal and lend a masculine character to the design which none the less traditional in line with Admiral brand values.

On the inside, Cacos V is a virtual art gallery as each cabin has been enriched by a different art installation at

the headboard. The main deck houses a large living and dining areas characterized by wide full height windows, while the owner’s area is totally bow-oriented with a private office, a large full beam cabin and a double bathroom. Internal furnishing have been made open pore in dark oak and polished Makassar, silk carpets and a succession of leather. A peculiar detail is represented by the staircase connecting the lower with the upper deck, which features single cantilever steps out from the wall and a trunk illuminated by a LED panel polished with bicolour resin for a 3D effect.

In order to improve visibility, the wheelhouse of Cacos V has sloped reverse windows to reduce reflections and water effects. It has also wide bridge wings which protrude from the external profile of the superstructure to let, during manoeuvres, maximum visibility fore and aft.

For its design innovation, Admiral Cacos V has been awarded in the category “Exterior Design and Styling Award” at the Show Boats Design Awards 2014 organized by Boat International Media.

The Sixth Element Bugatti Legends Edition coming to a close

Who will the next Bugatti Legend be? A question speculators and enthusiast of the French luxury marque will try to answer until the sixth and final model of the six-part “Les Légendes de Bugatti” (Bugatti Legends) Edition is revealed at Pebble Beach in August this year.

The majority of predictions point towards female racer Elisabeth Junek and Ettore Bugatti, however, we’ll just have to wait and see. The one thing we do know is whoever the final tribute goes to, you can bet that it will sell out in no time.

Based on the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, launched in Spring 2012, the special edition seems to be very desirable by collectors as all three vehicles of the five models presented so far have been sold out. As anticipation of the sixth and final model heightens, we decided to bring back the five Bugatti Legends to our pages.

Jean-Pierre Wimille

The first model in the series honours relates to the successes of the eponymous racing driver Jean-Pierre Wimille who won Bugatti two victories at the 24 Heures du Mans: in 1937, driving a Bugatti 57G Tank, and repeating the feat in 1939, this time in a 57C Tank. The winning race car from 1937 is the inspiration behind the design of the “Jean-Pierre Wimille” Bugatti Legend. For the historic race the 57G Tank appeared in the racing blue finish that habitually identified French racing cars. Accordingly, this Vitesse now shines in blue clear-coated carbon fibre and a light Wimille Bleu paintwork finish.

Jean Bugatti The second model of the Bugatti Legends pays homage to the eldest son of Ettore Bugatti, Jean Bugatti. Jean used his own structural and design ideas to exert more and more influence over the development of the company. In 1936, he took over as head of the company at the age of 27. By the time of his tragic accidental death in 1939, Jean had secured his place in automotive history with his pioneering engine and chassis designs and concepts for vehicle bodies. One of the most extraordinary designs created by Jean Bugatti has to be the Type 57SC Atlantic, one of the most exclusive and exceptional sport coupĂŠs ever built and ranking among the most expensive vintage cars in the world.

Meo Costantini

The third Legend Edition, dedicated to Meo Costantini, was revealed to the public for the first time in Dubai.

Meo Costantini raced Bugattis in the 1920s and went on to head the Bugatti’s racing team for eight years. He won several grands prix and the 1926 Targa Florio in a Bugatti Type 35, a model that went down in history as one of the most successful racing cars ever made. Meo was also a close friend of Ettore himself.

Rembrandt Bugatti

The “Rembrandt Bugatti” is the fourth Legend from the brand. The car honours remarkable sculptor, Rembrandt Bugatti. Born in Milan, Rembrandt was Ettore Bugatti’s younger brother.

Over the course of his life, Rembrandt’s oeuvre came to include over 300 bronzes, paintings and drawings. Rembrandt’s greatest artistic passion was for animals, however. He created a great many animal sculptures, but it was his dancing elephant that became perhaps the most recognisable symbol for the Bugatti brand. It is, after all, the silver hood ornament that adorns the Type 41 Royale.

Black Bess With its fifth model, Bugatti has revived the legendary Type 18 “Black Bess�, which went down in automotive history as one of the first ever street legal super sports cars. Named after an English racehorse, the Type 18 was a true racing thoroughbred and the fastest road vehicle of its time thanks to its impressive technical features. It was driven in races by company founder Ettore Bugatti himself; indeed he secured a win in the 1912 Mont Ventoux hill climb. Bugatti limited the production run for this model to just seven vehicles and sold them to an extremely select group of customers. One of these customers was the famed and celebrated French aviation pioneer Roland Garros, who successfully crossed the Mediterranean in an airplane in 1912. A lover of speed through and through, Garros was looking for a car which would enable him to travel as fast on land as he could in the air. The Type 18 was an obvious choice. In counting Garros amongst his customers, Ettore Bugatti had landed a major marketing coup.
