Restaurant Review
Fine China
Sophisticated and ambient, Bā Restaurant & Lounge delivers top notch Chinese food in a genteel atmosphere
According to Chinese culture, Bā (meaning ‘8’ in Can-

For our mains, we opted for the Chef’s signature Peck-

yellow blown-glass curls hang from the lavishly high ceilings
traditional fried rice. The first to arrive was the Peking duck,
which was roasted to a mouth-watering golden colour. The flawless duck was then expertly carved and rolled into deli-

our table, before its remains were taken back to the kitchen to be used in preparation of our second course. We leisurely
picked at the moreish duck pancakes not wanting them to end.
Our next savoury was the wagyu beef fillet accompa-
nied by the fried rice. The beef was tender and juicy – the
result of a gentle stir-frying – with an intense flavour lent by
a black pepper sauce that we simply couldn’t get enough of.
The rest of the duck also came back shredded and stir-fried with bean sprouts, peppers and black bean sauce that transformed the taste of the duck sweet with a hint of spiciness.
Having devoured our delicious mains, there was lit-
tle room for dessert, but for the sake of review, we thought
it best to try the enigmatic-sounding Chrysanthemum tea crème brûlée with spiced raspberry sorbet. We now found ourselves savouring every last mouthful and scraping the plate of this delicate, light and refreshing desert.
The verdict: Bā is a real gem of a restaurant with a
menu and wine list that will undoubtedly impress diners who enjoy premium Chinese delicacies with service and prices to match.

A Rustic Lake Break
Unique in the world: The Point, built by the Rockefellers as a woodland retreat during the heyday of the Adirondack Great Camps, marries rustic simplicity and extraordinary luxury. Words by Victoria Baker
Not all private islands are alike. They do however
share a common theme: luxury, exclusivity and privacy...
the mantra of any private island worthy of such a title. Lit-
tle wonder then, that since the dawn of time they have served as a haven for the privileged classes. Ironic that
one should go to such lengths to ‘get it all’, only to indulge in the luxury of ‘getting away from it all.’
The Point is an uber-exclusive 11-room Relais &
Chateaux property perched on the serene shores of Up-
per Saranac Lake in the woodlands of New York. Techni-
cally it is not a private island but it offers all the amenities of one, even if its geographic specifics don’t quite fit. We could call it a sanctuary, a haven of luxury, but these adjec-
tives fall short of its real character and so for the sake of
truth rather than accuracy, we will refer to it as a private island.
The Point, highly sought after by those in the know,
is not necessarily on the average tourist’s radar. Instead, it is the kind of place that having achieved impeccable levels
of service, attracts a discerning clientele from all over the world.
By the 1900’s John D. Rockefeller had made so
much money with Standard Oil he no longer knew what
to do with it. He gave much of it to charity but still the millions continued to pour in. The family prospered and sought out extravagant mansions whose opulence was

only bounded by the limits of the imagination.
Camp Wonundra was commissioned in
the late 1930’s by William Avery Rockefeller on Saranac Lake in Upstate New York. It was the epitome of the glamorous Adirondack Summer Camp:
the kind made fashionable by the great turn of the
century Robber Barons. Here, Captains of Industry would shake off their formal facade and enjoy the
wonders of nature much in the same way MarieAntoinette enjoyed the picture perfect farm known
as ‘The Queen’s Hamlet’ whose purpose was to escape the formalities of Versailles.
During Rockefeller’s time, active days in
the Adirondack great outdoors: fishing in the lake,
boating and the like were followed by glamorous evenings replete with black-tie, cigars and white-
glove service. Such ‘Great Camps’ as they were known became private enclaves for the crème de la
crème of American Society. They still communicate to us an air of Old World nobility virtually impos-
sible to recreate in today’s fast-paced environment. Today, Camp Wonundra has transformed itself into the exclusive 11-room Relais & Chateaux retreat
called ‘The Point’ where the Rockefeller spirit lives
on. Dining, drinks and outlandish requests worthy of any demanding Robber Baron are all included in the price of a night’s stay.
Above all, The Point is a culinary haven.
Only the finest ingredients and the highest artistry come into play to create indulgent meals worthy of a Rockefeller. The dinners are black-tie and served
Camp Style – this means one is seated alongside other guests as if at a dinner party. Exceptional food, unlimited drink, white-glove service, roaring
fireplaces, rustic decor and a convivial atmosphere all contrive to make The Point a place where memories are made.
Their extraordinary Chef Loic Leperlier will
create divine meals based upon your food preferences and should you wish to order anything, absolutely anything your heart desires, feel free to request it at any time of day or night because the Chef will be on-call to conjure up any and every culinary whim you may experience.
Chef Loic Leperlier’s professional history
has seen him through top Michelin star restaurants
and five-start resorts in Europe and French Polynesia along with Relais & Châteaux properties in the United States. Born in Réunion, a French island
off the coast of Madagascar, he began his culinary
54
career working in his family-owned Creole restaurant. After receiving his culinary degree from
the Lycée Hôtelier La Rénuion, he ventured to Paris to hone his French cooking skills as Demi Chef de Partie at the renowned 3-Michelin star
restaurant Lucas Carton. His professional journey has served him well, The Point is where one
goes for culinary excess and indulgence and Chef Leperlier is its mastermind.
Rockefeller is known to have said ‘If you
need to ask the price, you can’t afford it.’ In this
regard, The Point is indeed heir to the Rockefel-
ler dynasty. The all-inclusive nature of their room rates makes any talk of money seem crass and
déclassé. And for those yearning for ultimate seclusion, it is quite common for certain guests to reserve the entire place for themselves, making it
well and truly one’s own private island. Not even Rockefeller himself could improve upon that!

Jim Wheat
Money Talks Jim Wheat: Painting Dollars & Celebrating Life
A time of deep loss, loneliness and frustration spurred Jim Wheat to turn to art to produce his initial works at his Sheikh Zayed Road apartment in Dubai. There they remained until a chance commercial commission encouraged Jim to share his work and this timely message. Jim’s art gives abundance to the variety of materials used to produce each piece, from money of various currencies and times, to the mediums of sand, clothes, household goods, resin and oils. What occurs is a blurring of the boundaries between the art, which is ostensibly free and money, which many of us are slaves to. Some view this as a symbol of a rational and organised society where status if free to flourish. Others view it as a dark mechanism of control, an illusionary image printed on paper much like a fine art print. As money is an expression of value so is art. To possess art is in a sense to possess money that accesses a sense of an artist’s attitude and personality. Jim’s $ Art concept is about preserving and capturing the moment, not consuming through the constant changing of hands. Artwork associated with the $ carries extra meaning. On the surface, manipulation of currency in any form, even a simple doodle is a form of rebellion. The deeper you go, the narrative gets richer, raising questions about society’s value of the $ and what it means to each person. From an art collector’s point of view this raises many questions and ultimately points to the trickiness of the art market. The fine art marketplace Is complicated if you don’t know your way around often full of products that look like original art but are in fact reproductions. The sale
of art comes up against the fallacy of art and the fallacy of money. For this reason nothing is set in stone or on canvas and the value of art is very much dependent on confidence in art, confidence in money and confidence in oneself. The markets for the various type of art differ due to factors like stability, longevity, supply, demand, how accomplished the artist is, how broad collector bases are, fashion and what art ‘experts’ do and say. This original, unique art from the heart challenges these obstacles, regardless of the outcome with the therapy being in the artistic process from blank canvas through to the closing of the next exhibition. Art and money existence can have a profound effect on the lives of people the world over and neither should be dismissed as one. A consideration of the link between the two is, however, of great use to the collector and artist alike. When Jim boldly combined the symbolism and meaning of money with popular culture and the icons that embody it, the options for his new found expression became endless. Jim enjoyed his first solo exhibition at the Media One

Hotel, Dubai, in March 2013 where ‘The Money Collection’ was showcased as part of his ‘Dubai Dollar Project.’ His primary goal to ‘make art more accessible’ was achieved - but not without life changing financial and emotional risk, giving away over $64,000 of art whilst launching him into the art world, uninvited. In March 2014, Jim returned to the Media One Hotel to showcase ‘THE INTERGALACTIC$’, bringing with it an augmented reality experience and collaborative partnerships with strong, open-minded brands. The augmented reality smarphone app by local AR firm, Ogle, allowed one to watch the art come alive, as Jim explained each piece in a unique video clip, simply by holding an Ogle AR-enabled smartphone over each piece. Most recently, Jim showcased highlights of The Money Collection (2013) and The INTERGALACTIC$ Collection (2014) together for the first time in the The Reflective Collective exhibition held at Jumeirah Creekside Hotel. The renowned hotel, which is already home to 482 works of art by 51 contemporary artists from the Middle East, brought together 14 of Jim’s works from both 28-piece collections of the ‘Dubai Dollar Project’. The cream of both collections coming together is all about celebrating the story so far in this venue that lends itself to the work perfectly. An on-going quest of Jim, is to also celebrate life within contrasting levels of society. Working with icons from the world of music, sport and business, through to people often overlooked, but without whom society wouldn’t function as smoothly. The obsession with co-signing the $1 & $2 bills continues driven by a planned artistic collabora-
tion for 2015 that is designed to celebrate success at various levels, relative to the subject. The fruits of this labour have been quickly realised as Jim has since enjoyed delivering bespoke commissions for Donald Trump, Manchester United, DJ Carl Cox, horse racing legend AP McCoy, DUPLAYS Dubai, Cavalli Club, ITP Head office, Story Rooftop Lounge and K-Seal Glass (UK).
