Vision Coming to Life Interview with Ralph Debbas CEO and Founder of W Motors – the first luxury hypercar maker in the Middle East

As the founder of W Motors, the pioneer Arab car maker to create luxury sports cars, what’s it like to be making history and taking this first step? As Walt Disney once said, “All dreams can come true, if you have the courage to pursue them…”. It is not that easy to pursue a passion and a dream for a long long time, but it is easier when you know deep down inside that someday it will lead to something big. Today this dream has become a reality and the feeling that can best describe this big first step is pride. Not only am I proud to be making history, but also proud to be sharing this with the world and the Arab nations. What was once my dream, became the dream of thousands around the region who are supporting W Motors with passion.

How did the Name “W Motors” come about? As a child, I was nicknamed “Wolf” as some couldn’t pronounce my name “Ralph”. This nickname has always followed me ever since my youngest years, and when I found out later that Ralph actually means the Wolf Leader in German, my love grew for this animal, an animal which is beautiful, aggressive, smart and so rare. It was simply natural to name the brand W Motors, standing for “Wolf “Motors. The Lykan Hyper Sport looks incredible, can you tell us how the design came together and how much personalization it can offer? The design of the Lykan Hyper Sport is actually inspired by the Wolf, thus its 14

Italy to be close to our suppliers, consultants and partners at first. Making sure that we gain the experience and exposure we needed to launch the Lykan with confidence. With our new offices relocated to Downtown Dubai, we have plans to relocate the production facility to the region in the coming years.

name the Lykan (the most advanced species of Werewolves). I initially started imagining what the Lykan would look like many years ago. The more the project evolved, the more the design evolved with it. Our design director Anthony Jannarelly, had a big hand in the design of this beautiful beast, as he was able to understand my vision and original design, complementing it with his touch of creativity and talent. Remembering that we were designing a car that was going into production and had to follow all the international rules and regulations for safety and homologation, keeping an aggressive and modern design was a very tough task. The Lykan can be fully customizable with endless combinations of colors, materials, precious stones and metals.

Apart from the Lykan, how often are we going to see new innovations from W Motors? The Lykan is our first model entering the Hyper Sport category, and only produced 7 units worldwide. A second model going in the Super Sport category will be launched by the end of this year with a different DNA and produced to 25 units worldwide. Another limited edition Hyper Sport will also come the following year. We have many plans for W Motors and the region.

Since part of the engineering and design of the W Lykan was done in Italy, was there much Arab talent involved in the development and production of this car? What was the scale of involvement? The design and development of the Lykan was fully made in-house at W Motors in Lebanon along with the basic engineering studies. The company was created by Arabs, myself and partner Mr. El Khalil, along with some close friends whom I had made in England and who decided to move to Lebanon and join the W Motors team to develop the Lykan. To create such a gigantic project in a land and region that has no experience in the automotive manufacturing industry before was very risky, especially when my goal wasn’t only to create a car and local brand, but to create an international hypercar brand and name, and with the aim of becoming an icon in the automotive world. The help of big global companies was required to make sure that the Lykan was produced following international regulations and that we were actually building and developing a world class machine with names and companies who have years of experience in this field. It was natural to set our facility in

What was the biggest challenge in the making of the Lykan Hyper Sport? The challenges are huge and the risks are bigger. When you have a dream, a plan, a passion‌ nothing is impossible. The biggest challenge was to have people believe in your dream, trying to prove that it can become a reality. Then of course comes the technical side of production, funding and time. How many Lykans are actually made to date, why is the number limited to 7, and do you intend to make more? The production of the Lykan just started at the beginning of this year 2013 with the first deliveries scheduled to start in November 2013. We are limiting our production to 7 units worldwide to make it the most exclusive car in the world (less than 10) the number 7 was chosen as it represents the Seven Wonders of the World, the seven continents, the seven days of the week‌ also the number 7 has the V shape in Arabic. The Arabic 7 was 16

Hypercar makers such as Pagani, Koenigsegg and Gumpert? We are not trying to compete with anyone; on the contrary, I admire and have great respect for all manufacturers and brands that have been around for so many years. Without their influence, W Motors would never have seen the light of day. Since its first conception W Motors’ aim was to create a product that can be perceived as a Work of Art or a jewel. Our clients are people who already have a collection of Supercars and Hypercars but are still looking for something even more exclusive and different. Pagani, Koenigseg , Gumpert or Bugatti are all in the same race to build the fastest and most powerful machine in the world. At W Motors we are not building the fastest car in the world, but simply offering a new vision of Hypercars, a car that offers never-seen-before technologies, a car that is born with luxury within, a car that is so beautiful and rare that it becomes an icon in this industry. The Lykan is something else; it is simply out of this world.

used in several parts of the Lykan as styling cues (the wheels, front lights, back blades, roof and sides) in a very subtle and elegant way. With this great success, do you have plans to go into mass production? Mass production is not in our plans. We have several models coming out in the coming years all of which are limited production units and will keep the exclusive label of W Motors as the most prestigious automotive brand on the market, aimed for the Elite clientele. At W Motors we have many plans to expand into several sectors of the automotive industry such as technology research centers and automotive design schools which will make the Middle East a new hub for the automotive industry.

Considering your main market is the Middle East, how do you compete with strongly established high-performance

maker of this road monster, W Motors, intends to make the Lykan the epitome of luxury and exclusivity – only 7 units of this car will ever be manufactured. The Lykan, we are told, possesses a unique blend of power, advanced design, and the latest technology. The interior of the Lykan features a first-of-its-kind holographic display with an ID4 interactive motion dashboard and uniquely designed carbon fiber seats for ultimate comfort and safety. For a touch of particular high luxury, the LED headlights have been encrusted with diamonds. Additionally, the car comes with goldstitched interiors, a 24/7 concierge service and a patented design Cyrus Klepcys watch, that has been dedicated exclusively to Lykan owners. The body is predominantly made from carbon fiber for a magnificent finish. The flat 6 twin-turbo engine, producing 737 pound-feet of torque, has been engineered to achieve a perfect balance between power and speed, creating an exceptional driving machine for an intimate driving experience. Touted a “modern machine with a touch of humanity,” the limited edition Lykan is priced at USD 3.4 million(AED 12.5 million), making it one of the most exclusive and priciest cars in the world.

This reveals how much power is available should it be needed – or simply desired – by the driver at any time during a journey. But Wraith is no GT bruiser; it is every inch a refined and luxurious Rolls-Royce, a car where the sense of arrival and joy of the journey are as important as the canvas upon which it is drawn.

Connectivity in the Wraith starts – as one might expect – with a one-touch call button. Located on the steering wheel, this allows navigation, telephone and other commands to be directed straight into Wraith’s on-board computer. The car’s response is then displayed on a 10.25” High Definition screen – rich in depth and colour – located in the dashboard. The Wraith incorporates a selection of other technolo-

gies designed to protect occupants and improving safety for other road users. Night vision technology, for example, now includes warning messages, as well as automatic brake preparation to support evasive action should an accident be imminent. These technologies work in harmony

under dual integrated chassis management systems, so the Wraith remains poised, even when subjected to a vigorous test. Both in terms of handling and safety, these systems operate as one. And of course, they work imperceptibly to driver and passengers.

BENTLEY PERFORMANCE CONVERTIBLE

“A Convertible for drivers who seek the sensory thrills of the world’s fastest four-seat soft-top”

The new GT Speed Convertible combines the sensory pleasures of roof-down luxury touring with the shattering performance of a 616 bhp twin-turbo charged 6.0 litre W12 powering the new convertible to 100 km/h in 4.4 s. while delivering a fifteen per cent improvement in fuel efficiency. The close-ratio eight-speed transmission, uprated

and lowered suspension and retuned steering provide exhilarating acceleration and sharp, communicative handling without detriment to the renowned ride comfort of Bentley’s Continental convertible. Permanent all-wheel drive ensures optimum traction and power delivery whatever the road conditions. Taking its place at the pinnacle of the

24

Bentley Continental range, the new GT Speed Convertible has a top speed of 325 km/h and in true Bentley style, no compromises have been made in craftsmanship, luxury or refinement to deliver this unrivalled performance. Subtle sporting design cues include exclusive 21-inch alloy wheels, dark-tint grilles and ‘rifled’ exhaust tail pipes. Inside its handcrafted cabin, the GT Speed convertible features the Mulliner Driving Specification as standard, blending contemporary luxury with a distinctly sporting character.

From outside, the front wings of the GT Speed Convertible are created in superformed aluminium, their seamless form and crisply-defined body creases creating an impression of tension and muscularity. The 10 mm lower suspension and unique 21” wheels accentuate the wide, low and poised stance. Despite the supercar performance, additional spoilers are unnecessary as the gentle lip on the double-horseshoe boot lid generates all the down force the GT Speed Convertible needs.

The thrill of the open road, 365 days a year

The new Continental GT Speed Convertible offers the luxury and refinement of a coupé yet transforms into a head-turning open tourer at the touch of a button. The four-layer hood ensures high levels of refinement and acoustic insulation. Exhaustively tested in all conditions, it resists even monsoon-force rain and maintains comfortable, draft-free warmth even on the coldest days. Another practical feature, the neck warmer, makes open air driving an appealing and comfortable prospect even on the cooler days of spring and autumn. With the hood down, the Continental GT Speed convertible offers sensational performance with the sensory amplification of open-air motoring. Hood up, it’s as practical a year-round proposition as its coupé stablemate.

Interior: sumptuous and exclusive luxury

Inside, exclusive tread plates featuring the ‘Speed’ legend welcome you to a four-seat cabin that features the hand-craftsmanship of the Mulliner Driving Specification, with its distinctive diamond-quilted hide upholstery. For the Continental GT Speed models Bentley offers an exclusive Dark Tint Aluminium ‘engine spin’ finish, inspired by the dashboards of the Le Mans winning Bentleys of the 1920s. Getting Styled

We know what it’s like to shop in huge, multi-leveled edifices crammed with stores stocked with thousands of products. Service consists of taking your money at the check-out after you have rummaged through endless rows of clothes dangling from coat hangers or worse still, lying discarded on the floor by the previous faceless shopper. To make the entire experience even more unsettling, every second night our favorite current affairs program is featuring some gorgeous young thing prattling on about what’s current, what must be worn by everyone this season and how easy it is to create this season’s “look”. Their words and accompanying images swim around in our brain as we trudge the tiled floor of our nearest shopping mall. When it all becomes too much and our cries for help go unheeded, we admit defeat and retreat to the car park. Saving time and money with the help of a personal stylist is not wishful thinking. A personal stylist is not a luxury indulgence for the privileged few, but a sensi-

They will ascertain what clothes flatter your body shape, which colors best suit your complexion and what style you should be aiming to wear. The Sergio Rossi Fall-Winter 2013-14 collection, the brain-child of creative director Francesco Russo, finds inspiration in one forceful idea: the exaltation of the shoe as an expression of architectonic design. It’s a tribute to world-class Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, who through his work has forged a union between architectural vision and engineering principles. Accordingly, the Sergio Rossi shoe becomes for all practical purposes a micro building where the architectural factor emerges conceptually as the successful pursuit of a design project, not as a group of geometric shapes and consequently complete constructions. Basic structure regains its true value. Distinctive shapes and colors give way to a set of structural components that assume the dominant role in that they are, and shall remain, what ultimately define the shoe.

Designer Francesco Russo attends the Sergio Rossi presentation cocktail during Milan Fashion Week Womenswear on February 21, 2013 in Milan, Italy.

PURE SHAPE, BASIC STRUCTURE Sergio Rossi Fall/Winter 2013-14 collection

28

A both striking example and signature item of the new Sergio Rossi collection is a spike-heel pump with set steel support cage (gem-set mode) between heel and sole. While surely a decorative feature, this cage is also a keenly functional element since, no differently from the metal frameworks essential to building construction, it supports the delicate structure of the shoe. In line with the concept of simplicity or pure clean design underpinning the collection, the palette contains black, white and nude hues only.

As for materials, the use of python in addition to classic leather and suede relies on the snake skin’s particular checked-like texture, which enhances and highlights the graphic effects and underscores the geometric gaps of the shoe. Lastly, pink gold and steel metals, with an effective connection to the realm of architecture, top off the collection’s mood to perfection.

The Finer Things The London Robe Company Back in the day, the robe served one primary function: warmth. It was what you threw on before heading out to get the morning paper. But over the past few decades, the robe has undergone a transition. Hugh Hefner gave it new meaning when he was seen sporting his infamous red silk robe, helping to redefine the robe

as a symbol of leisure, relaxation and style. Of course, today’s definition of loungewear has transcended Hugh, so whether or not you’re looking to emulate him, if you were to invest in only one piece of lounge wear and treat yourself to a little bit of luxury, it’s most surely a good time to consider a lounge robe. We all know how important it is for a man to feel that sense of luxury and relaxation when he is in his sanctuary. Some men express this desire by buying big flat screen televisions; some express it by buying a pool table or creating a special place in the house where they can unwind after a long day’s work. For a man with comfort and luxury as his aim, opting for a lounge robe with clean lines and classic styling is not on the far side. After a long day, this is surely the way to go. Yet, not every man has a lounge robe and not everyman knows if he needs one, but the sure sign of a gentleman with classic style and grace demands that he owns at least one. Think James Bond. As trends burst and fade, the London Robe Company revisits the sixties style to inspire men to up their sartorial game and consider lounge robes as essential attire for the well-appointed man, offering a chic and comfortable selection of luxury lounge wear, so you can lounge in style. The London Robe Company is a Dubai-based fashion house that produces fine robes, luxury lounge wear, and rare fabric evening wear for some of the best dressed men and women in the world. Rare silks, intricate brocades, plush velvets, all hand-crafted by master tailors make their robes totally unique, elegant, and absolutely exclusive. Artistic Convergence: Art Dubai 2013 Dubai highlights its dramatic persona in the field of the arts as it continues to reveal its presence behind fantastic art, art projects and fairs.

As the much awaited Art Dubai came up with its seventh Edition (scheduled March 20, 2013 to March 23, 2013), art curators and galleries brought forth an eclectic mix of artworks and creations which were successfully presented and promoted at Dubai’s key annual arts venue – Madinat Jumeirah. With a stellar line-up of international and regional galleries, Art Dubai 2013 (which was presented in partnership with the Abraaj Group and sponsored by Cartier), builds on its reputation as a fair of discovery. The 2013 edition hosted 75 galleries from 30 countries, making it amongst the most globalized of art fairs. The fair derives its international impact from its regional relevancy: of the over 500 artists showcased at the fair, either through exhibiting galleries or Art

Lighting Concept Implementing perfect lighting concepts for brighter and stylish interiors are the best way to redo your home. Both natural and artificial lighting plays an important role in this. Artificial lighting concepts can be implemented by installing modern lighting fixtures whereas for natural light and ventilation, you will need to install appropriate doors and windows.

African influences

More and more modern villas are starting to showcase unique design themes and African influences which are particularly considered dynamic and “exotic”. In 2013, African influences are said to be a major trend, bringing warm colors and animal skin imitations back into the eclectic interiors of most fashion enthusiasts.

Going Green

Green living is a key factor in design and architecture this year. From mobile plant panels to framed plant screens with lighting effects, these ideas can bring a fresh touch to any apartment or villa. This approach is not only healthy, but also original and elegant.

Integrated Technology

The top trend for home interior design in 2013 is rooted in technology, but not as we’ve ever known it before. App technology for controlling ovens, touchscreen fridges, and table-top tablets will all make their way into our homes over the coming months, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Atul Kochhar

Atul Kochhar is a graduate of the great culinary institution Oberoi and a Michelin star Winner. Like most Michelin-starred chefs, Atul is based in London but has visited Dubai regularly over the past 12 years. Culinary Retouches: Modern Flare in Indian Cuisine Interview with Michelin star chef Atul Kochhar

What’s your philosophy regarding food preparation? I really believe in minimizing food waste, so in terms of food preparation I really try to use whatever ingredient I’m working with to its fullest potential – which many call the ‘head to tail’ philosophy.

How did you find your way to Dubai? I’ve always travelled through Dubai and loved the culture and the city, so when the opportunity arose to open a restaurant there, especially with such a renowned hotel group, I couldn’t say no.

Dubai has a growing restaurant culture with more and more celebrity restaurants. Do you think Michelin guide should cover Dubai soon? Yes absolutely.

What gastronomic proposals do you use to seduce your diners? Aside from the food, we have really focused on developing the bar and lounge area in Rang Mahal. Inspired from the lounge in my restaurant Benares in London, we have introduced the concept of molecular cocktails to Rang Mahal so that diners can have a complete gastronomic experience.

What is your feedback on the culinary scene in the UAE? The culinary scene in the UAE is developing rapidly and is becoming very diverse with many different influences, it is a great place to be and I look forward to contributing to the international dining scene here.

What do you do to insure the quality of the food going out to diners? Every dish that is prepared in any of my kitchens is subject to tasting prior to being served to a guest to ensure we are maintaining a high standard in both quality and presentation.

How would you define the cuisine at Rang Mahal? The cuisine at Rang Mahal is definitely a fusion between my native Indian cuisine and European, Middle Eastern and Asian influences. Staying true to Indian spicing and cooking techniques, the menu at Rang Mahal was developed for a sharing-style dining experience.

What makes Rang Mahal like no place else? Rang Mahal is really one of a kind and offers an all-encompassing experience. From the beautiful space and décor to the food and the cocktails I hope that every guest that visits Rang Mahal feels they had a memorable and special experience.

How do you create a personal identity on dishes for a cuisine so wide and diverse? I use traditional cooking techniques which I learned growing up in India in combination with inspiration gathered from my extensive travels to give all of my dishes that personal touch.

How would you describe your Rang Mahal in one word? Sublime. 45

RANG MAHAL by Atul Kochhar

Modern luxury wrapped around the vibrant colors, sounds and scents of magical India.

We were told that giving a contemporary twist to the traditional Indian cuisine was the inspiration behind Atul Kochhar’s first Dubai Restaurant – Rang Mahal. Sounds like a good idea! But who are we to doubt the ingenuity of a Michelin star chef? From the moment you make your entrance, Rang Mahal strikes you with the vibrancy of modern India. The spacious dining area cleverly blends with a sophisticated lounge, introducing the choice between dinning and lounging. Dimmed lighting sets the mood while carved wood columns and stunning wooden screens blend in seamlessly with spice inspired colors and tones to deliver a sumptuous atmosphere. Taken by the splendor of this colorful palace, our senses were stimulated and our patience was running thin to be handed our menus. Fortunately, the waiters were prompt and attentive. The menu has lots of options and covers a variety of tastes and flavors from seafood to lamb and chicken, all cooked in assortment of approaches and styles. Vegetarian options are well represented on the

46

menu, however, the lamb chops are not to overlooked. To start off we ordered the soft shell crab appetizer “Karar a Kekada” which comes with seasoned apple and peanut salad and coriander aioli on the side. Enjoyable to the last bite, we braced our choice of main course –The Lamb Chops “Tawekee Champen”– in Fennel and Tellicherry Pepper Marinade. The lamb was tender, juicy and bursting with flavor. New to Indian cuisine, one thing we especially loved was the level of spiciness of the food –contrary to our perception of Indian food, the food at Rang Mahal wasn’t too spicy and fused modern flavors with traditional cooking methods beautifully evoking the taste of India. At the latter part of the evening, we favored the popular beverages over desert so we left our table to step into the other side of Rang Mahal – Aneffortlessly cool lounge pulsing with beats, energy and a stylish vibes – Where you could choose to sit on sofas or by the bar. The music – modern lounge style – was beating at a reasonable volume where you could still enjoy a conversation. Clientele seems to be mainly affluent Indian expats, at least when we were there. However, Rang Mahal has a truly international

appeal to all epicureans from fine dining connoisseurs to lovers of traditional Indian food. The verdict: The presentation of the food was exceptional and reflective of the high culinary expertise of chef Atul. The Restaurant adds another string to Dubai’s gastronomic bowl and the service makes you feel like royalty. Overall, the price is well worth the experience.

Fashionable Inspiration

“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” Coco Chanel

Chanel was the illegitimate daughter of a shop girl and a street peddler who would know little of the comforts of a stable family life. Her mother passed away when Chanel was just six years old, and it wouldn’t be long before her father also abandoned her. Averse to fatherhood, he quickly ran off and left the young Chanel and her four siblings to fend for themselves on the streets of France. They went to live with their two aunts in Auvergne, France and it was here where Chanel learned much of the etiquette that would characterize her later career. Living with her aunts, Chanel was taught how to be a polite little girl, to sit up straight and to learn how to sew. She took an early liking to sewing and instead of playing with dolls, spent much time dressing them in material she had cut from curtains. She also spent her time playing sports and horseback riding, typical activities for a girl of that time. However, Chanel didn’t have the opportunities of most other children and her childhood would soon be interrupted once again. When she was 17 years old, Chanel was sent to an Aubazine orphanage, where nuns took over as her primary caregivers. Supportive of her efforts as a seamstress, the nuns helped Chanel get a local job to build her talents. But, Chanel was bored

Do you know Coco? With a simple mention of the word ‘Chanel’, images of luxury, grandeur and haute couture spring to mind. As one of the most recognized and venerated brands in fashion history, the original Chanel came from the impoverished streets of France to revolutionize women’s fashion and liberate it from its restrictions. Well over a century ago, the cornerstone was laid that would become the House of Chanel. Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel defined the odds by creating a fashion empire that continues to challenge the concept of high fashion. With her trademark suit and little black dress, Coco Chanel created timeless designs that are still popular today. Indeed she herself became a much revered style icon known for her simple yet sophisticated outfits.

Defining the Odds

“Hard times arouse an instinctive desire for authenticity.” Coco’s early years were anything but glamorous. Born on August 19, 1883 in Saumur, France, Gabrielle Bonheur ‘Coco’ 53

with the simplicity of her surroundings and decided to pursue a life of excitement and stardom. She abruptly took off for the town of Moulins in an attempt to become a cabaret singer which gave her the name “Coco”. Some say that the name comes from one of the songs she used to sing, and Chanel herself said that it was a shortened version of cocotte, the French word for “kept woman”. While singing didn’t prove to be Chanel’s forte, the experience was valuable in that it introduced her to Etienne Balsan, a rich French playboy and textile heir who took a liking to the young aspiring singer. Chanel soon found herself as a mistress to Balsan and living a luxurious life. But, Balsan had many mistresses and Chanel grew bored again. She rekindled her interest in sewing and approached Balsan with a business proposition. With more money than he knew what to do with, Balsan decided to give Chanel the money she needed to open up her own hat and dress shop in Paris. She soon left him for one of his even wealthier friends, Arthur “Boy” Capel. Both men were instrumental in Chanel’s first fashion venture. Opening her first shop on Paris’s Rue Cambon in 1910, Chanel started out selling hats. She later added stores in Deauville and Biarritz and began making clothes. Her first taste of clothing success came from a dress she fashioned out of an old jersey on a chilly day. In response to the many people who asked about where she got the dress, she offered to make one for them. “My fortune is built on that old jersey that I’d put on because it was cold in Deauville.” In 1922 Chanel took her thriving business to new heights 54

er during the German occupation of France in World War II. Her reputation in the public’s eyes became quickly and irrevocably damaged. After the war ended, Chanel was interrogated about her relationship with von Dincklage, but she was not charged as a collaborator. Some have wondered whether friend Winston Churchill worked behind the scenes on Chanel’s behalf. While not officially charged, Chanel suffered in the court of public opinion. Some still viewed her relationship with a Nazi officer as a betrayal of her country. Chanel left Paris, thinking her years as a designer were finished and she stayed out the spotlight until 1954, spending some years in Switzerland in a sort of exile. She also lived at her country house in Roquebrune for a time. At the age of 70, Chanel decided to make a triumphant comeback to the fashion world. She first received scathing reviews from critics, but her feminine and easy-fitting designs soon won over shoppers around the world. To this day, nobody knows if she returned because she was bored or if she wanted to reclaim her territory amongst the growing competition. But, it didn’t matter – Chanel was back.

by introducing a perfume, Chanel No. 5, which became and remains popular. Pierre Wertheimer became her partner in the perfume business in 1924, and perhaps also her lover. Wertheimer owned 70% of the company; Chanel received 10% and her friend Bader 20%. The Wertheimers continue to control the perfume company today. In 1925, she introduced the now legendary Chanel suit with collarless jacket and well-fitted skirt. Her designs were revolutionary for the time, borrowing elements of men’s wear and emphasizing comfort over the constraints of then-popular fashions. In addition to fashion, Chanel was a popular figure in the Paris literary and artistic worlds. She designed costumes for the Ballets Russes and for Jean Cocteau’s play Orphée, and counted Cocteau and artist Pablo Picasso among her friends. For a time, Chanel had a relationship with composer Igor Stravinsky.

The Little Black Dress

Chanel introduced her signature “little black dress” in 1926. The concept of the “little black dress” is often cited as a Chanel contribution to the fashion lexicon and as an article of clothing survives to this day. Its first incarnation was executed in thin silk, crèpe de chine, and had long sleeves. The arrival of the little black dress in Paris brought instant fame to the House of Chanel. Her simple designs appealed to women who had been constricted for decades by corsets and stifling fabrics. Clingy, easy-moving jersey material brought a sexy-casual feel to even the most elegant suits and dresses. In 1926, the American edition of Vogue highlighted such a Chanel dress, dubbing it ‘the garçonne’ (little boy look). Vogue editors predicted

Scandalous Times

Legend has it that the second Duke of Westminster, Hugh Richard Arthur Grosvenor, was love-struck by Coco back in the late Twenties. In response to his marriage proposal, she reportedly said “There have been several Duchesses of Westminster but there is only one Chanel”. Apart from associations with British aristocracy, it was well documented she tookGerman officer Baron Hans Gunther von Dincklage as a lov55

it would “become sort of a uniform for all women of taste”, embodying a standardized aesthetic, which the magazine likened to the democratic appeal of the ubiquitous black Ford automobile. Evidently, most of Chanel’s fashions had a staying power, and didn’t change much from year to year, or even generation to generation. She took a color once associated with mourning and showed just how chic it could be for evening wear.

Legacy

In addition to the longevity of her designs, Chanel’s life story continues to captivate people’s attention. In 1969, Chanel’s fascinating life story became the basis for the Broadway musical “Coco” starring Katharine Hepburn as the legendary designer. Alan Jay Lerner wrote the book and lyrics for the show’s song while Andre Prévin composed the music. The show received seven Tony Award nominations. There have also been several biographies of the fashion revolutionary, including Chanel and Her World (2005) written by her friend Edmonde Charles-Roux. In the recent television biopic, Coco Chanel (2008), Shirley MacLaine starred as the famous designer around the time of her 1954 career resurrection. Coco Chanel died on January 10, 1971, at her apartment in the Hotel Ritz. She never married, having once said “I never wanted to weigh more heavily on a man than a bird.” Hundreds crowded together at the Church of the Madeleine to bid farewell to the fashion icon. In tribute, many of the mourners wore Chanel suits. A little more than a decade after her death, designer Karl 56

Lagerfeld took the reins of her company to continue the Chanel legacy. Today her namesake company continues to thrive and is believed to generate hundreds of millions in sales each year. By refusing to license out the Chanel name, the company has maintained strict quality control over its products, allowing it to stay at the top of its game in all the decades since Chanel’s death. Today, Chanel’s overlapping double ‘C’ logo continues to represent an image of chic and elegance around the world.

Laid-back Okinawa: The Birthplace of Karate

Years ago, a kingdom called “Ryukyu” prospered in this land. Today, the remnants of that ancient time still echoes in the traditional exotic culture and unique customs of Okinawa that have been passed down through the generations. There is plenty to explore and enjoy in this region; its sandy beaches and breathtaking coral reefs offer a both relaxing and lazy vacation and thrilling adventurous aquatic sports. Out of the 160 islands, only 40 some are inhabited. The largest, Okinawa Honto is home to Naha, capital of Okinawa Prefecture and gateway to the rest of the islands by sea and by air. After visiting Okinawa Island’s many attractions, you might wish to fly or take a ferry onward to one or more of the other islands, like Kume Island, renowned for its beaches, sugar cane fields, and historic sites relating to the Ryukyu Kingdom, and Iriomote, famous for its vast pristine wilderness and for scuba diving. You may also enjoy visiting the many untrammeled islands of Okinawa. These islands,

As it is far to the south of the main islands of Japan, its climate is more temperate than the other Japanese prefectures. It is mild enough that swimming in the winter months is pleasant. The prefectural capital Naha is in Okinawa Honto. While much of the central part of Okinawa Honto is urbanized, the southern tip of the island is less densely populated, and the northernmost Yambaru area remains mainly covered by forested hills and small fishing and farming villages.

Tamaudun Mausoleum The Tamaudun Mausoleum was built around the beginning of the 16th century as the mausoleum for the royal family of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It was restored after suffering extensive damage during the war. The mausoleum is located only a short walk from Shuri Castle. The mausoleum consists of three closed chambers: the left one for kings and queens, the right one for princes and princesses, and the central one for storing recently deceased bodies before undergoing a ritual of bone cleaning a few years later. The mausoleum follows the Okinawan burial tradition of constructing large stone tombs, but it was built in a particularly grand style to exalt the royal family.

Prefectural Museum The Okinawa Prefectural Museum is a great place to learn more about Okinawa’s unique history and culture. The museum was previously located near Shuri Castle, but was relocated and reopened in a modern building in 2007. It consists of two separate museums: a history museum and an art museum. The history museum covers the entire history of Okinawa from before the time of the Ryukyu Kingdom to modern times. The scope of the museum is wide and includes natural history, folklore, crafts and archaeology. Good bets include Makishi Public Market where food vendors sell local specialties on the second floor, and Ino Ocean View Restaurant in the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, offering a buffet of Okinawan specialties along with panoramic views.

NIGHTLIFE

When visiting Okinawa, you have to know that there are some nightclubs that do not welcome foreigners. There usually are signs posted at the entrance, so there’s not much chance of unwittingly wandering into a Japanese-only club. The most frequent reason is that the staff and patrons do not speak English, so tourists who can speak some Japanese or are accompanied by local friends can talk their way into these clubs. Many nightclubs in Okinawa city are specially designed with American clientele in mind, due to the proximity of the Kadena Military Base. The so-called rock-houses have great live music and a somewhat nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of the 80’s and 90’s. Regular Okinawan discos and nightclubs are usually large and elaborate, and some of them are famous even in Japan. During the summer months, the Nakano Machi district in Okinawa City is swarming with Japanese tourists from nearby mainland cities. Other popular places are Smuggler’s Irish Pub and Rehab in Naha. Whichever nightclub you choose, we recommend that you try Awamori, Japan’s oldest distilled liquor, introduced to the Ryukyu Kingdom from Siam (present-day Thailand) in the early 15th century and distilled from rice, it’s very strong but tastes amazing.

SHOPPING

Kokusaidori (International Road) is Naha’s main street, stretching for roughly two kilometres through downtown Naha. The street takes its name from the former Ernie Pyle International Theater, a movie theater that was built along the road after the war. Starting around the Naha Bus Terminal and Prefectural Hall, Kokusaidori is lined by restaurants, cafes, bars, souvenir shops, boutiques and department stores. If you are looking for even more shopping opportunities, you are encouraged to venture into the colorful Heiwadori, Mutsumidori and IchibaHondori arcades, which branch off Kokusaidori around the intersection with Okieidori, halfway along the street. Kicking off on Saturday, 30 March 2013, at that most pristine of palatial race courses - Meydan, the 18th Dubai World Cup boasted unparalleled levels of luxury, viewer comfort and racing technology, all combining to create the ultimate horseracing experience. Records show that no horse has ever won the Dubai World Cup more than once. Sadly, the closest horse to win that accolade, defending champion Monterosso, had to pull out of the race after the Emirates Racing Authority vet declared his left foreleg lame. Entertainment and prizes were by no means limited to the track. Tucked in between the stands and the grass runway, that most prestigious of motor car manufacturers, Jaguar, revealed their Jaguar XK, which they as put up as top prize for this year’s ‘Style Stakes’ – a now staple of the Dubai World Cup (the surprise announcement of this particular prize came at an exclusive fashion event hosted by Jaguar the weekend before race). As the title sponsor of Style Stakes, Jaguar presented Ilona Saleski, the
