EDITOR’S MESSAGE
Ahoy! Dear Readers,
Welcome to the Yachting issue of Haute Dubai. In this issue, a passion for a lavish lifestyle is translated as we look at what’s afloat the yachting emporium, full of the finer things in life. First, let’s go back to the month of April that saw the massive 180-metre Lurssen built yacht – Azzam – sail into the record books as the new World Largest Superyacht, making a splash in the race for the biggest luxury vessel and bringing us nicely to our cover story featuring the top 10 contenders on page (14). Besides the biggest and largest, we relate the innovative design of a midsized yacht: the Superyacht Adastra, 42.5m Power Trimaran – a yacht that spells the future for efficient long range cruising and eco-friendly design, page (58). While aboard a luxurious yacht, you’ll probably want to lose all track of time and enjoy the unhurried hours. However, if you’re keen on keeping time, then you’ll revel on page (54) as contributor Tariq Malik presents some of the finest nautical timepieces. In the world of automotive, a world parallel to that of yachting, the most exciting news to reach us this year was from Italy, particularly, the news about the year-long celebrations of Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary echoing across the globe. Born under the sign of the bull, with a wild spirit for design-innovation, Lamborghini continues to deliver immaculate design and technology as it sketches another great chapter in history, page (64). In the Travel pages, there are a couple of trips on our itinerary. Come along for the best yachting escapes as we set sail around the world on page (34). Smooth sailing! Editorial Team

Battle of the Billionaires Top 10 Largest Superyachts
Owning the biggest yacht is traditionally the instrument of choice when it comes to demonstrating prosperity among the wealthy around the world. Between thousands of superyachts – all offering their owners ultimate comfort and exceptional relaxation at sea – few stand out enough to warrant a place in the Top 10 list. Here are the top 10.
14
1. Azzam

Length: 180m Year: 2013
Builder: Lurssen Yachts
Owner: H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the UAE
Built by Lurssen Yachts and launched on 5 April 2013, Azzam is the largest private yacht in the world. At 180m, she has a beam of 20.8m and an unusually shallow draught of 4.3m. Engineer Mubarak Saad Al Ahbabi directed the construction of Azzam whose technical engineering and build was carried out by Lürssen. The exterior was designed by Nauta Yachts, while the interior design was executed by Crhistophe Leoni. Azzam was built in three years, which is a record building time according to Superyacht Times. Among the general features, Azzam was built to travel at high speed in warm and shallow waters, while providing luxurious and sophisticated accommodation. The yacht has a main salon with a length of 29m and a beam of 18m with an open plan and no pillars. Azzam can travel in excess of 30 knots, powered by a combination of two gas turbines and two diesel engines providing a total power output of 94,000 hp.

Eclipse’s exterior and interior were designed by Terence Disdale Design and its naval architect was Francis Design. Eclipse has two helicopter pads, 24 guest cabins, two swimming pools, several hot tubs, and a disco hall. It is also equipped with three launch boats and a mini-submarine that is capable of submerging to 50 meters. Approximately 70 crew members are needed to operate the yacht. For security, Eclipse is fitted with intruder detection systems and a German-built missile defense system. Abramovich’s master suite and the yacht’s bridge are fitted with armor plating and bulletproof windows. The yacht is reportedly equipped with an anti-paparazzi shield in the form of lasers that sweep the surroundings; when a device with an electrical charge is detected, a light is shone directly at the device to prevent any photography. According toThe Times, this system is not active all the time, so friends and guests are able to take pictures; the system being activated when guards spot likely professional photographers nearby. How such a system could feasibly work has, however, not been demonstrated, leading some to doubt the claim’s credibility.

LOUNGING AT ITS HIGHEST Neos Sky Lounge
Just footsteps away from the Dubai Mall, the bridge to Souk Al Bahar is arguably one of the best spots to witness the stunning views of the infamous Burj Khalifa glittering by the dancing splashes of Dubai Fountain, but what if you could take these views 63 levels skywards? Elevated just as high inside the remarkably chic Address Downtown Hotel, Neos Lounge offers exactly that – uninterrupted views of blooming Downtown Dubai and all its star attractions – with the perfect setting to unwind in a chic atmosphere. To join Dubai’s well-heeled crowd at this extravagant lounge, you need to take not one, but two lifts. The first takes you up to the 61st floor of the hotel to switchover to the second one, dedicated to the access of Neos, to take you up two stories higher where the doors open and you’re greeted by super sleek and nimble staff. The opulent art-deco interior dressed in shiny chrome finishes complement the black marble floor beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers, evoking glamour in a contemporary fashion. Once inside this sublime lounge that succeeds in being intimate at the same time, all that stands between you and the dramatic sky-

Fresh & Funky
Characteristic Home Styling and Decor It is often thought that odd home decoration themes are better avoided but this is too much of a simplistic statement to hold true in every case. Veering away from the traditional gilded woods and elaborate fabrics can be interesting, especially with most designers turning their attention to reanimate the old, dull and monotonous. Here are a few items with fewer limitations and greater expression.
Pampille Chandelier
Twist One line gives the shape to the leg, back and seat, without interruption, keeping all important and functional elements together. The seat is covered with injected flame retardant polyurethane foam shell while the symmetric base is made of polished chromium plated metal. Available through www.tononitalia.com
The Pampille Chandelier is a decorative element used for lighting and as a classical chandelier. Its shape, inspired from a pendant, is molded from a single plate of Bohemian Crystal, cut and polished by hand. Fine bubbles engraved with laser sparkle in the centre when it lit using two bulbs and a row of LED lights. The chandelier is attached to the ceiling at the desired height by a system of discrete attachment. Positioned over a table or in a lobby, the Pampille Chandelier Majestically lights up the space, and adds a touch of opulence. Available through www.2222editiondesign.com
26
Roll Fire As it rolls, Roll Fire easily balances its stainless steel tank, mounted on its roller bearings. The two glass panes fitted at the sides render it completely transparent. As it is held in place by magnets, when the tank is being filled with bioethano, the glass is lifted off in no time at all. However, that’s not all Roll Fire can do: with its wall bracket (available as an option), wall mounting is a simple matter. Alternatively, the bracket can be used to secure it to the floor – for those who want to see their Roll Fire with rather less of a life of its own. Available through www.conmoto.com
Confluences Confluences may be considered to be a trailblazer in terms of the new trend for ‘counter-forms’ as characterized by the interwoven yin-yang or puzzle-type effect. It will be just as pleasing to lovers of radical design, pioneers searching for a settee which is totally different from any other, as it will to all those who are seduced first and foremost by the freedom of posture and unheard-of conviviality offered by its colourful, unbridled compositions. Available through www.ligne-roset.com
The Tipsy stool The Tipsy stool is a master of deception, appearing to balance on a cylindrical foot. The illusion is enhanced as the seat leans far past its centre of gravity. Upon sitting, the stool is completely sturdy achieved by a trick using a hidden structure. Available through www.splinterworks.co.uk
27
Stiletto Stiletto can function as a desk, console table or dressing table. The curvaceous leg of the table evokes a stacked heel stiletto and is hand sculpted from solid walnut. The iconic ‘red sole’ defines the underside of the table in stained bird’s eye maple, with a French burr walnut top or with inlaid leather. The drawers have no handles; just a hidden finger groove on the underside ensures the seamless functionality of the clean sculptural shape. Available through www.splinterworks.co.uk
Vessel Struck by the synergy between the shapes of two compelling symbols of relaxation, a hammock and a bath tub, Splinter Works were inspired to develop a piece that would provide the ultimate vehicle for total escapism. By literally elevating the experience of bathing into a suspended sculpture, the bathroom has been reinvented as a contemplative sanctuary for artful relaxation. Designed for use in a wet room, Vessel is suspended from the walls and does not touch the floor. It is fixed with stainless steel brackets that can be covered over, or left revealed. The bath is filled using a floor standing tap and the waste water released through the base into a floor drain. A downpipe drain can also be installed if a wet room setting is not possible. Vessel is made from carbon fiber which is utilized for its inherent strength and ability to be formed into complex curves. At 2.7m long, Vessel is longer than a regular bathtub, leaving plenty of room to share the experience. Pictured here in black, it also available in red, blue, yellow, pink, bronze and pure silver, and can be in custom sizes as required. Available through www.splinterworks.co.uk

C. Bechstein Gleams Golden The Voice of an Artist Clothed in Rococo Luxury: Possibly the World’s Most Precious Grand Piano
In Celebration of its 160th anniversary, Bechstein, one of Germany’s most historic and at the same time most modern piano-maker, presents its unique achievement: a luxurious, sumptuously ornamented instrument made by master craftsmen and artists using the most exquisite materials.
30
This incomparable piano glows with a regal aura. Rich gold leaf, delicate woodcarving, and elegant miniature paintings after the style of Watteau, embrace an outstanding acoustic design. Inside the elaborate Louis XV case beats the young heart of a modern C. Bechstein grand piano: the CB B 212 model, a masterpiece of acoustic engineering and craftsmanship, made for the most discriminating professional artists. “The Golden Grand Piano recalls a glamorous era in the company’s history when we filled orders for crowned heads and famous artists. It also demonstrates the brand’s return to its legendary strength,” said Karl Schulze, CEO of C. Bechstein Pianofortefabrik AG, Berlin. “We have built it after the specifications of a 19th-century masterpiece made by Carl Bechstein himself for the royal court of England. This instrument is the epitome of craftsmanship and creativity – a fitting homage to the grand seigneur of piano-making.” In three years of work on the Golden Grand Piano, the C. Bechstein staff have demonstrated skills that few craftsmen still master today: precious woods were selected, patiently cured and delicately shaped; filigree ornaments carved of solid walnut were richly finished in gold leaf; special lacquers were produced from traditional recipes and applied layer by layer to create the miniature paintings.
31
The touch of this unique instrument is just as luxurious as its ornamentation: the perfectly balanced action responds to every nuance of the pianist’s playing. For all its majestic appearance, the ultramodern Golden Grand Piano submits completely to the musician’s control, expressing every intention in the rich colors of the famous Bechstein sound. Custom-built pianos by C. Bechstein today adorn stately homes, luxury yachts, and corporate headquarters. Before the Golden Grand Piano is delivered to its owner, it will travel to spectacular sites: Sanssouci Palace, the former residence of King Frederick the Great; and the Imperial Palace in the Forbidden City in Beijing— places dedicated to enduring art and culture, not to passing fads and fashions.

TO THE SEA Ideal Destinations for a Yacht Vacation
Holidays can be predictable at times. Whether it’s getting on a plane to visit some tropical country or taking a family road trip to an amusement park, there is usually little to get excited about besides the time off. You can change that feeling by planning your next trip on a yacht. A holiday onboard a luxury yacht will see you sipping a cocktail while taking in the panoramic view of turquoise waters and burnt orange sunsets as you cruise some of the most magnificent coastlines and ports in the world, without having to sacrifice comfort or quality. But even the wealthiest people may find it impractical to buy a yacht purely for the purpose of cruise vacations. It is not just an issue of the retail price of a yacht, but also the cost
of maintaining a yacht which entails hiring a dedicated crew and mechanics. The good news is that one does not necessarily have to be ultra wealthy to travel on a yacht. A cost-effective solution is to simply charter a yacht. A chartered yacht cruise is typically pre-planned and pre-packaged by the service provider. However, there is also an option to have your own chartered course. Luxury yachts are particularly bountiful in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas, but more recently there has been an increase in yachts cruising to more remote areas of the world. We’ve chosen the trendiest hotspots and cruising areas that will be sure to leave you enchanted by their beauty.
34
The Mediterranean The azure beauty of the Mediterranean lures travellers with its fine wines, spectacular cuisine and alluring history of ancient civilizations and breathtaking architecture. Western Mediterranean destinations include: the Balearics, the South of France’s pristine Cote d’Azur, Sicily, the spectacular Amalfi Coast, Corsica and Sardinia’s Cala di Volpe. Some extraordinary destinations in the Eastern Mediterranean region include the diverse Greek Islands which tempt admirers to visit again and again. The south coast of Turkey and the remarkable Adriatic Sea with Croatia and Montenegro have also proven incredibly popular.
The Caribbean Ever charming the visitors that arrive on their luxury yachts, the Caribbean abounds with natural beauty and immaculate blue waters. Somewhat of a celebrity playground, the Caribbean is made up of many islands, ideal for leisurely exploration. The most popular of the Caribbean hotspots are the Virgin Islands. The magical archipelago, made up of more than forty islands and cays, is an absolute treat.
35
South East Asia Encompassing Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, South East Asia has recently grown in popularity among those who enjoy yachting. The region draws travellers with its collection of exotic islands and magical getaways. Locations in South East Asia are all unique in what they can offer travellers – there is the diversity and rich cultural and historical heritage of the Indonesian islands, the delightfully unspoilt islands and rainforests of the Malay Peninsula or the adventure rich South China Sea.
South Pacific There’s nothing quite as enchanting as sailing through the South Pacific. From coral lagoons, to swaying palms, charming villages, and crystal blue waters, this region has a way of enveloping you and making you never want to leave. Dive in the Great Barrier Reef, enjoy the Polynesian cuisine, or watch the Humpback Whalesfrom Hawaii to Guinea, Fiji, Samoa, and Tahiti.
36
Indian Ocean You will never again experience the excitement and delight that comes from cruising in the Indian Ocean and experiencing the incredible wild life poised in the magnificent waters of the Seychelles and Mauritius. Moving from vast bodies of water into small canals and streams where the only sound is that of mother nature. Enjoy the pristine white sand beaches, snorkel in the reef, camp out in dark coves, or chill out along the waters less travelled, swept by the regular southeast winds.
North America The sheltered waterways, bays and fjords that extend from south of Seattle through British Columbia and into impressive Southeast Alaska, are some of the world’s most amazing cruising waters. Puget Sound connecting the Pacific Ocean via the Strait of Juan de Fuca within the Pacific Northwest provides practically 300 islands and some 2000 miles of shoreline. The San Juan Islands are essentially the most well-known charter region in the Puget Sound and in the Pacific Northwest. This cluster of inhabited islands and barren rocks is located some sixty nautical miles north of Seattle. Boasting more than 200 rocky islands, along with a dozen pristine state parks, this is really a fantastic chartering area for newcomers; the waters are moderately secured even in storms off the Pacific.

With the rigors of everyday life, our bodies suffer various energy blocks that leave us with fatigue, health problems, and low energy levels. In traditional Chinese medicine, it’s believed that our core energy, or “Chi”, flows through a specific pattern of channels called “Meridians”. It’s taught that disease is a manifestation of our “Chi” becoming imbalanced. Being a variation of acupressure, Chinese massage works to stimulate and rebalance the energy along the Meridians, releasing toxins and tensions out of your system in the most natural way. The good news is; you don’t need to fly to China for it as Dr. Jason brings you the wealth of ancient

Spring/Summer 2013 Collection
Men Collection The CH Carolina Herrera collection for men for this Spring/Summer is a colorful proposal with a young and fun feel that explores the contrasts between the classic and the modern. The inspirational images for the collection transport us to the Côte d’Azur at the end of the 1950s to recreate the charm and style that defined Saint-Tropez, Monte Carlo and Cannes at that time. This is coupled with the rich sensations associated with the coast: the sun, the intense blue of the sea, hidden away beaches and unhurried hours spent aboard a yacht. The collection boasts luxurious natural materials which add lightness, freshness and comfort, such as cotton and linen, giving a re-
fined feel to all the garments. Tropical wool offers distinctive classic tailoring, technical fabrics are used for the sportier pieces, and soft suede adds the finishing touch to the summer collection. The colors explore different tones of blue, natural shades and the traditional CH Carolina Herrera red, accompanied by vibrant and refreshing touches of color inspired by the Mediterranean: orange, greens, delicate purples and dusty yellow. This is a collection full with optimism and vitality and shows exquisite tailoring and extreme care in every last detail.
52
Women Collection The sophisticated 1960s provide the inspiration behind the CH Carolina Herrera collection for next summer. Grace Kelly, Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn, Jean Seberg, Jane Birkin, Catherine Deneuve… women with very different but equally sublime styles. There is a clear change in form, coupled with generous volumes and imaginative colors and prints but, above all, we find traces of these fashion icons that remain firmly fixed in our memory. Three forms define the collection: the A line, in voluminous skirts and cocktail dresses, the pencil silhouette in casual wear, and the square line, offering a freer volume, both in sports dresses and outer garments, giving a touch of freshness and rebelliousness that livens up the entire collection. The base fabrics are cottons, linens and silks, fabrics which appear in a wide
range of colors, from emerald green to navy blue, and from fuchsia to orange. Delicate and imaginative prints break the harmony to create fun and original contrasts that transform the collection into an essential summer wardrobe.

Watches at Sea
Top 5
Yachting Companions Words by Tariq Malik
Whether you’re taking to the seven seas or sailing the French Riviera, you need to do it in true superstar style, aboard a sumptuous yacht, world-class amenities, first-class service, and high quality paraphernalia, like timepieces. When you are sailing at 50 miles an hour, ease of use and speed are very important factors. Your time companion needs to have a large display that can be read at a glance, a crown and buttons with a good grip that can be easily and quickly set, and a range of features such as a countdown timer, a compass, a barometer, tides and alarms that would give you the extra advantage at sea. But this does not mean you need to sacrifice style! Sailing watches can be sporty and chic at the same time! We rounded up the top 5 watches that deliver equal amounts of precision, craftsmanship and glamour.
IWC
Yacht Club $14k – $26k One of the most highly anticipated watches of 2010 was the revived ‘Yacht Club’ line from IWC. The original Yacht Club was designed by none other than Gerald Genta, who is known for designing two other iconic watches: the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Phillippe Nautilus. The Yacht Club was one of IWCs top sellers in the 1970s. The 2010 model features an in-house movement (the IWC 89360), a flyback chronograph function and a 68-hour reserve. It is available in steel and rose gold. With a slick dial design, a rubber strap for extra toughness, and increased water resistance (6 bars or approx. 60m), this watch is a winner.
Rolex
Yachtmaster II $16,5k – $48k At Momentum we have a saying: ‘There is a Rolex for every occasion’. First launched in 2007, the Yachtmaster II was designed to meet the needs of professional sailors. While it may look like a normal chronograph, the cal 4160 is actually the first complication built with a programmable countdown and mechanical memory (patented by Rolex, of course). This timer can be adjusted on the fly as your sync with the official regatta timer. And at 44mm, it’s the largest Rolex model, making it very easy to read. Previously only available in gold and gold/steel combinations, Basel 2013 saw the launch of the all-steel version to the delight of many watch and sailing enthusiasts.
54
TAG Heuer Regatta
$2k – $3k It is only fitting that we should feature a vintage watch in this selection especially that the watch in question is the TAG Heuer (previously known as Heuer). The brand has had nautical stopwatches and navigation watches in their portfolio since the 1950s. There are 3 particular models worthy of a mention: 1) the Skipper, an automatic movement with a 15-minute countdown register, 2) the Solunar (Solar/Lunar), which calculates low and high tides, and 3) the Regatta, also made to time the 5 minutes before the start of a race. The Regatta stands out with its countdown timer – the five large circles between 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock. These apertures change from blue to orange as time goes by. Once all have turned orange, 5 minutes have passed. A very cool and easy way to read! Prices range $2k – $3k, depending on condition and accessories.
Richard Mille RM 015
$435k Richard Mille is known for his commitment to using the best technology available: light-weight materials, amazing architectural design and handmade finishing. This naturally limits the number of watches that can be produced, increasing the exclusivity of their timepieces. Richard Mille is also the official timekeeper of the Perini Navi Cup, one of the finest regattas in the world. The RM 015 is inspired by the Perini Navi yachts – one of the finest designed and most cutting edge sailing ships in the world. The tonneau shaped case and movement need to be seen up close to be appreciated. A torque indicator is positioned between 2 and 4 o’clock to measure the tension in the mainspring, ensuring accuracy. To set or wind the watch, there is a push-bottom which allows you to select a “gear”. A skeleton dial allows you to appreciate the movement in all its beauty. An amazing piece of engineering excellence and at $435,000 for the platinum model, the RM 015 is as exclusive as it gets.
Corum
Admiral’s Cup AC-One 45 Regatta $8k – $60k Swiss watch brand with pedigree in the sailing world, Corum was a pioneer in sponsoring the Admirals Cup in the 1960s, producing a specially designed line of watches. It was also one of the first watch houses to have its own boat in the Admirals Cup in 1987, the “Corum 1”. Corums Admirals Cup line of watches come in many different materials including vulcanized rubber through to rose gold, and complications range from chronograph to timing high and low tides. Its latest offering, launched at Basel 2013, is the Admiral’s Cup AC-One 45 Regatta, which includes not only a chronograph, but also a countdown function that can be set to any given minute in the interval between the first pre-start warning gun and the start signal. Its location at the 3 o’clock position also makes it easy to read.

Stability, Luxury & Efficiency in Harmony
Superyacht Adastra
2012 in China for Hong Kong clients Anto and Elaine Marden. Adastra is the result of meticulous attention to detail and innovative design to create a yacht that meets the needs of a very experienced ocean
Described by Boat International as “one of the world’s most amazing super yachts, that could spell the future for efficient long range cruising”, the striking 42.5m Trimaran Adastra was launched on the 11th of April
58
Pacific oceans at hi-speed. Adastra takes the power Trimaran concept further than has ever been attempted before, previous vessels like Earthrace, Cable and Wireless were stripped out record breaking machines. The challenge of turning this concept into a viable luxury yacht has led to further research and development on stability and comfort at sea for this type of craft. Extensive tank testing and radio controlled model tests in waves have been carried out to analyze stability and performance. Outrigger height has been optimized for ease of motion at sea, and a new outrigger shape has been developed to increase stability in waves. State of the art structural analysis of all the major components in the yacht have undertaken in order to achieve the light weight required for very low fuel consumption. The deck and superstructure is constructed from carbon fiber with Nomex honeycomb core, the hull is glass/kevlar foam sandwich and the interior is light weight oak cabinetry using hon-
voyaging couple and their family, and to provide the level of comfort and style expected in a yacht of this class and size. No effort has been spared in the challenge to produce a beautiful yacht that has exceptionally low fuel consumption and yet provides excellent sea keeping qualities and luxurious accommodation. Measurements taken during the sea trials show that her fuel consumption at 10.5 knots is as low as 17 liters per hour when carrying 10 percent fuel and water. At cruising load (20 tons fuel and water), she uses just 25 liters per hour therefore on delivery trips her range is 16,000 km starting with 30,000 liters of fuel. Her slender hulls and streamlined exterior allow her to travel faster in the open ocean, and at 17 knots she has a 6,438 km range so she can comfortably cross both the Atlantic and
59
eycomb panels. To help reduce weight further, virtually every aspect of the boat is custom built. This includes carbon fiber hatches, toilets, port-lights and ladders, which are all built specifically for the vessel. Aerodynamics and hydrodynamics above the water line were carefully considered as the overall exterior shape was developed and the boat was kept streamlined both for air and water passing over the structure. The smooth
seamless, unbroken surfaces also help to reduce weight as the outer-skin forms part of the structure to absorb torsional loads. Adastra’s 16 meter beam creates a spacious saloon area on the main deck which offers superb views through a panoramic window and accommodates a lounge area, dining table and navigation station. A forward facing door through the saloon window gives easy access to a large sunbed on the foredeck. The aft deck has a sofa and bar area to port and a dining area to starboard, further aft there is space for a 4.9 meter tender, and directly
60
below is a garage which can store a 3.1 meter tender. The garage door has been designed to fold out and create a large dive platform. The main helm station, which has seating for two, is positioned in a raised pilot house situated between the aft deck and the saloon area, and forms part of the cross beam structure. Extra space has been created below deck by slightly flaring the central hull just above the waterline. This area has been split into two sections with a full-width master cabin located aft with access from the deck saloon, and two further guest cabins, accommodation for the crew, and the galley located forward of the engine compartment. Adastra offers comfortable accommodation for nine guests and up to six crew members. The anchoring system is unique with three anchors driven by carbon fiber drum winches run by hydraulics. The primary anchor is a custom 130kg Bruce style anchor
that deploys out of the starboard wing. The bow anchor is 80kg and deploys out of the bow with a carbon fiber arm. The third anchor is 60kg which deploys out of the port wing and is used as a stern anchor.

Waves of Magnitude World’s Largest Yacht Sails for the Capital
It’s a usual sight to see massive vessels come out from Lurssen’s shipyard, but that was only the case up until something much larger emerged. Dubbed as the largest superyacht in the world, Azzam, which is Arabic for “determined”, came forth from her production shed in Germany and into the public eye on the morning of Friday, 5 April 2013, to repose as the new title holder of the World’s Largest Superyacht. Measuring a whopping 180 meters in length, Azzam dethroned Roman Abramovich’s 162.5m Eclipse, which held the title for three years. The ownership of this unprecedented vessel, after three months of mystery-fueled speculation, was finally reported by Yachts France magazine to belong to His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. The news came as no big surprise after rumors had already placed the capital city as the home port. These rumors started around the fact that the name Azzam is also the name chosen for Team Abu Dhabi’s entry in the Volvo Ocean Race, and were also supported by the identity of the head engineer overseeing the project, Engineer Mubarak Saad Al Ahbabi, chairman of the UAE President’s Private Department. The brief was to build a luxurious large yacht which featured a timeless and innovative design that could travel at high speed even in warm and shallow waters while still providing sophisti-
62
cated and luxurious accommodation for its guests. This brief was carried out under the supervision of engineer Mubarak and a world class team which he personally assembled and directed in all areas of the project, to conceive not only the world largest superyacht, but also the thirdfastest among the top 100 – capable of reaching speeds greater than 30 Knots – through a combination of two gas turbines and two diesel engines with a total of 94000hp, an astonishing speed for a superyacht of her size. The yacht’s interior design was undertaken by the renowned French designer Christophe Leoni, while the exterior design and technical engineering were developed by Nauta and Lurssen Yachts respectively, to create what is, without doubt, the most complex superyacht Lurssen Yachts has ever been built. Among many defining features, the floating palace features six bridges and a main salon that has a length of 28 meters and a beam of 18 meters which is an open plan layout with no pillars or obstructions, making it an absolutely stunning piece of design.

50 Years of the Raging Bull
Celebrating Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary
Celebrations of Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary, that were held in Italy and other countries across the world through the first quarter of 2013, have culminated in May, coinciding with the same week in which 50 years ago the company was incorporated and the inaugural foundation stone was laid at its factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese. Starting out at the Geneva Motor Show 2013 in March, where Lamborghini unveiled the limited edition “Veneno”, and coming to an end with the unveiling of concept-car “Egoista” at Lamborghini’s Anniversary Gala Dinner held at the factory; the festivities have not come short of thrilling. Just like a Lamborghini would, in this article, we bring you up to speed.
64
Lamborghini at Geneva Motor Shows: Veneno
The Veneno, a racing prototype fully homologated for the road and designed as a limited edition for the 50th anniversary of Automobili Lamborghini, celebrated its first public appearance at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Every detail of its form pursues a clear function – exceptional dynamics, optimum down-force with minimal drag and perfect cooling of the high-performance engine - 750 horsepower via a 6.5 liter V12 with a 0-100 km/h time of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 355 km/h. The fast-shifting 7-speed ISR manual gearbox, with 5 driving modes and permanent all-wheel drive, as well as the racing chassis with pushrod suspension and horizontal spring/ damper units, have all been specifically adjusted to meet the demands of the Veneno. The systematic, carbon-fiber, lightweight design of the Veneno is not only visible in the body and interior, it is also evident
65
on the scales: with a dry weight of just 1,450 kilograms, the Veneno is even 125 kilos lighter than the already extremely lean Aventador. The racing personality has been transferred also to the instrument panel. It has been completely redesigned and now, thanks to an aggressive graphics and to the introduction of some additional features like the G-meter, provides all necessary information to the driver for control of the car. Fully in keeping with the tradition of the brand, the name of the Veneno originates from a legendary fighting bull. Veneno is the name of one of the strongest and most aggressive fighting bulls ever. He is also famous for being one of the fastest bulls in the history of bullfighting. His name became popular in 1914, when he fatally wounded the famous torero José Sánchez Rodríguez during the bullfight in the arena Sanlúcar de Barrameda’s, Andalusia, Spain. Unfortunately the Veneno is extremely exclusive; only three Venenos were built and have already been sold at US $3,915,300 a piece. The Veneno show here – only car to display all three colors of the Italian flag as an accent – is the car on show at Geneva, and will remain property of Lamborghini. The three cars sold to customers, will each feature a single color of the Italian national flag, together a trilogy in green, white and red accents and thus representing each a unique piece.
Lamborghini at Shanghai Auto Show: Lamborghini Aventador LP720-4 50° Anniversario Against the backdrop of the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show, Automobili Lamborghini presented the Lamborghini Aventador LP720-4 50° Anniversario, a limited and numbered series of 200 units worldwide. Each unit has a Forged Composite badge with the 50° logo and a serial number. With an output increased by 20 hp more than the current V12 in the Aventador LP700-4, its new performance-oriented front and rear design
66
and special paintwork and unique interior trim, this Aventador is one of the most exclusive models ever produced in the history of Lamborghini. Representing a new highlight of this globally successful model range with carbon-fiber monocoque, the front and rear fascias of the 50th anniversary model have been redesigned and the aerodynamics further optimized. The front air intakes and the aerodynamic splitter have been enlarged and extended, with small flaps set into the sides. The rear end is completely new and features an enlarged diffuser and expansive meshwork that further improves enginecompartment ventilation. Overall, handling stability at extreme speeds has been optimized without impacting drag characteristics due to an increase of more than 50 percent in the aerodynamic efficiency compared to the Aventador LP700-4.

Grand Tour & Anniversary Gala: Unveiling of Egoista In Italy, a four kilometer convoy comprised of 350 Lamborghinis traveled across the country, for three days, eventually making their way to the factory museum in Sant’Agata Bolognese. In total, over 190,000 horsepower was on hand as part of this 3-day event. On Tuesday, May 7th, the cars gathered in Milan, Italy’s capital of fashion and design, leaving the next day for Forte dei Marmi, one of the most exclusive resorts on the Tyrhennian coast. On Thursday, May 9th, they set off towards Rome, with a triumphant evening arrival in the city center. On Friday, May 10th, the cars drove towards Bologna, via Orvieto, arriving at Emilia-Romagna’s capital during the evening. Saturday, May 11th marked the closing day of the celebrations: the cars headed off in procession from Bologna towards Lamborghini’s famous factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese, where participants were able to visit the historic museum, the production facility, as well as enjoy another one-in-a-lifetime Lamborghini experiences. A gala dinner held at the factory ended a thrilling day packed with events and entertainment. At each stop, Lamborghini fans were able to admire the cars. The Grand Tour, the biggest Lamborghini rally in history, ran the length of Italy, and was attended by Lamborghini owners and dealers from all over the world. From the 7th to the 11th of May, 2013, more than 1,200 km of Italy’s roads roared with the thrum of hundreds of Lamborghinis. From the unforgettable historic GTs to the futuristic super cars of today, the cars arrived from every corner of the globe to celebrate “Made in Italy”. Egoista, created by the Head of Design for the Volkswagen Group, and paying homage to the House of Lamborghini’s half century celebtations, made a dramatic debut with a cinematic entry announced by a trailer projected onto the nine big screens in the room. The stage was transformed into a landing strip, with a top model in a flight suit guiding the Egoista’s arrival with ground crew light paddles, and the roar of the V10 engine shaking the 20-meter-tall tensioned event structure: this is the spectacle the thousand invitees and VIP guests were treated to when Lamborghini President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann taxied onto stage at the wheel of the Egoista, be-
fore inviting its creator, Walter De Silva, to join him on stage. “I am very attached to this Italian brand, being an Italian myself. I wanted to pay homage to and think up a vehicle to underline the fact that Lamborghinis have always been made with passion, and with the heart more than the head,” said an emotional De Silva. Indeed the Egoista, as the vehicle has been christened, is a car forged from a passion for innovation and alternative solutions, the same passion which has always set the Lamborghini brand apart”. “This is a car made for one person only, to allow them to have fun and express their personality to the maximum. It is designed purely for hyper-sophisticated people who want only the most extreme and special things in the world. It represents hedonism taken to the extreme, it is a car without compromises, in a word: egoista (selfish),” De Silva further explained.
68
Powered by a 5.2-liter V10 engine supplying it with 600 horsepower, the Lamborghini Egoista is an intentionally extreme and unusual vehicle with absolutely unique characteristics. De Silva’s team chose to create a single-seater, pushing all the characteristics in Lamborghini’s make-up meaning pure driving pleasure, performance and style beyond their limits. The cockpit, designed like a tailor-made suit for the driver, is a removable section which, once combined with the rest of the vehicle, creates a perfect technical, mechanical and aerodynamic unit. Inspiration, as per Lamborghini tradition, once again comes from the world of aviation, and in particular the Apache helicopter, where the cockpit can be ejected in an emergency. If Lamborghinis are cars for the few, this one goes further. It is a car for itself, a gift from Lamborghini to Lamborghini, resplendent in its solitude. The Egoista is pure emotion, Never Never Land, which no one can ever possess, and which will always remain a dream, for everyone.

Retracing wheels are deployed to drive the craft in and out of the water and onto the road. The entire transition can be accomplished in under 3 minutes with 12 passengers on board. Simple and intuitive controls make it possible for a single pilot to steer, brake and accelerate the twin Hamilton water jets with a single joystick in one hand whilst steering the land driveline steering wheel with the other. When onboard a superyacht, the Limo Tender can be driven from the deployment point to its storage area in electric mode with the diesel engine powered off and the wheels minimally deployed to keep the overall vehicle height to no more than 2 meters. Passenger access to the vessel on water is highly flexible as deck level access is provided on both sides and at the stern. IN CONVERSATION:
Martin Bodley, CEO and Founder of Nouvoyage
Haute Dubai: The Nouvoyage Limousine Tender 33 a special vehicle, perhaps even a bit too special. What kind of clientele is it aimed at? Martin Bodley: Nouvoyage is targeting the superyacht market, the high end luxury toy market, waterfront property owners and commercial tour/charter companies. This vessel brings a capability that has never before been available, namely creating adventures for owners and guests that combine land and water destinations, seamless and always in the utmost luxury. Quality, fit and finish are best in industry, combined with performance on both land and water on par or exceeding the best boats and limousines respectively. Imagine an afternoon cruising on Lake Como, a beautiful dinner at a vineyard on your way back to Venice, stopping at dance club, then out to the yacht on its mooring. With this vessel, you are truly limited only by your imagination. A superyacht with this limousine onboard offers a distinct advantage in attracting charter clientele. What charter client wouldn’t want this vessel at their disposal during their dream vacation? HD: For a vehicle that functions as a boat, one would expect that it’s not really meant to travel long distances at sea. How reliable can it be in the water? MB: The Limousine Tender 33 is designed to meet open water classification for 3 meter wave height, which is pretty rough water. The standard fuel tanks will enable 300nM range with the vessel, and passengers will receive a very comfortable ride given the stable hull design and substantial weight of the craft. Major systems are fully redundant, ensuring that even if a driveline component fails, it is likely that the vessel will be able to get itself home on either land or water, albeit at a slower speed. HD: The first impression you get is that it’s a bit tricky to build a machine that is conforming to both road and sea safety regulations. Does the Limousine Tender 33 meet all standards to be considered a road car and a
nautical craft? MB: In short, Yes. We have designed the vehicle to meet all safety regulation standards for water and road operation in North America, Europe and the Middle East in compliance with major regulatory agencies standards such as USCG, DOT, NHTSA, CE, MCA, among other regional agencies. HD: Can a Nouvoyage Limousine be customized to meet a client’s special needs or taste? MB: Yes, the Nouvoyage Limousine Tenders are bespoke and offer lots of freedom with the interior design layout, features, fits and finishes. Features like a kitchenette, and foldaway beds are among the many options that are possible depending on the owner’s desires and ultimately how the vessel is planned to be used. Handicap accessibility can also be achieved should the requirement call for that. Interior colors, materials and finishes are all open for design refinement, should the owner want to match an existing yacht or home. The exterior paint color is also selected by the buyer. HD: How much does it cost to own a Nouvoyage Limousine Tender 33, and how long does it take to build and deliver one after the order and deposit have been made? MB: Our amphibious limousines are custom built to order. Pricing varies from $1.5 to $3 million, depending on size (8, 9, 10 or 11 meters), features and level of fit out. The 10-meter unit, shown in the presentation, prices out around $2.5million. These units are custom made to order and it takes about 16-18 months to build from receipt of deposit. A deposit of 20 percent is required to reserve a hull and start a project. For further progress, payments are made throughout the build with the final payment coming on delivery to the customer. The vessel comes with a 1 year total service plan, and extended warranties are available from Nouvoyage. Maintenance on these vehicles can be carried out at regular marinas or commercial vehicle garages.

A Snapshot of the Louvre Abu Dhabi Birth of a Museum Whilst art enthusiasts and aficionados eagerly await the opening day of the Louvre Abu Dhabi in 2015, Birth of a Museum – a presentation of the museum’spermanent collection – has not only offered a preview of the museum, but also formed a positive impression, fueling the anticipation of the marvelous artworks to come.
key artistic and aesthetic questions which reveal the core principles of the identity of the Louvre Abu Dhabi: universalism and the comparison between art works from great civilizations, from the most ancient times to the contemporary scene, while underlining the multidisciplinary nature of the fields of artistic creation. The 130 works that were on display, many of which had never been shown before, span a millennia and originate from societies and cultures all over the world, showcasing the breadth of great civilizations and illustrating links arising from shared human experience transcending
Held at Manarat Al Saadiyat, the exhibition flung open its doors for almost four months to offer a snapshot of the values and thinking that went into implementing the new museum – including its major theme and architectural design by Jean Nouvel – which will not only serve as a branch of the Louvre, but also have its own unique identity, inspired by the region, cultural context, and the history of forms in the Middle East. Conforming to the Louvre’s Abu Dhabi philosophy, the exhibition proposed a singular and original rereading of the history of art, and was built around several

geography, nationality and history. The selection of the collection, divided into six thematic sections representative of the museum, allowed for approaches that are more trans-chronological than chronological in narrative, evoking the museum’s aesthetic and telling the story of its birth. Ranging from ancient artifacts to modern art, the collection showcases key works such as: Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey’s Ayoucha from 1843 Cairo (depicting the oldest known photograph of a veiled woman), a delicate section of pages from the Holy Qur’an and Suras believed to be from Syria’s late thirteenth century, together with a Christ Showing His Wounds figure whose creation dates back to 1515. Paintings by Paul Gauguin (Children Wrestling, 1888) and René Magritte (The Subjugated Reader, 1928) are in dialogue with works by Giovanni Bellini, Édouard Manet, Picasso, as well as contemporary art works by Alexander Calder, Paul Klee, Yves Klein and Cy Twombly. The exhibition has closed its doors now, but not for long, and only to be reincarnated as a greater and larger spectacle – the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Designers in the Making
Esmod Dubai Graduation Fashion Show 2013 on June 29 at Wafi Mall as Esmod Dubai once more proved the importance of education within the fashion industry. Students at Esmod showcased talent and skills they’ve acquired during course over the runway through designs ranging from “weird” to “wearable” and everything in between. As the show concluded with graduating students’ collections, international jury members, hoping to spot the next big talent with a touch of that quirkiness that makes Esmod Fashion so successful on a global scale, bestowed both Pattern Making and Fashion Design awards to Liliane A. In the Costume category, the Pattern Making Award went to Sukhmani H. K.
Many people are generally born with an innate talent for fashion, that intuitive ability to put together imaginative mixtures of colors, textures and add-ons in spectacular attires, that many of us, less lucky, might never have thought possible. For those who want to keep their finger on the fashion pulse in the Middle East, there is probably no better way to find out about up and coming designers and know what is in store in the fashion future than attending the annual event that is the graduation fashion show of Esmod Fashion Institute Dubai. This year, the annual event, characterized by edginess and freshness, took place
