In October 1969, Cartier acquired a 69.42-carat diamond for $1,050,000 at a New York auction. The gem was promptly named the Cartier diamond. At the time, the diamond was the twelfth-largest in the world, and the largest diamond ever to have been privately owned.

A marriage of femininity and a Manufacture mechanical movement

This watch knows its classics: Roman numerals, sword-shaped hands, dotted rail-track, guillochĂŠ dial... the design codes of Cartier watchmaking are emphasised by the bold curve of the delicate dial. Powered by a Manufacture mechanical movement with manual winding, this new interpretation of the Tortue watch is available in small and medium sizes, with versions in white, pink gold or set with diamonds. Daytime models are mounted on a leather strap; evening models with a total look of pink or white gold are enhanced by a sophisticated, flexible bracelet with flat links.

The Mouawad L’Incomparable Diamond Necklace features the modified shield step-cut deep yellow diamond suspended beneath 229.52 carats of cascading, strikingly white diamonds that are sublimely interlaced in 18K rose gold branchlets. The necklace, created using a total of 91 diamonds, was entirely designed and crafted by Mouawad’s skilled artisans and is a resounding testament to their profound creativity and virtuosity with this latest bespoke offering – valued at $55 million USD. In its rough state weighing 890 carats, the Incomparable Diamond made a long serendipitous journey before reaching Mouawad. It was in 1980 in the Democratic Republic of Congo that a little girl found the diamond in a rubble pile of kimberlite that was sorted out because it was considered to be too bulky to possess any diamonds. The diamond eventually made its way into the hands of renowned diamond expert Marvin Samuels who spent four years supervising the cutting of the stone into its present flawless form. It was then put on display at several museums with the first one being the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. Mouawad has been crafting jewellery and watches for over a century and is a global authority in the world of diamonds. Moving in the Right Direction: Fashion Forward Season Two A Snapshot of the Region’s Definitive Fashion Event

Indicators that the Middle East’s fashion sector is becoming more mature and widely recognised were strongly present throughout Season Two of Fashion Forward (FFWD), which concluded with resounding success on Friday 18th October 2013. The four day event saw phenomenal attendance figures from the regional fashion community, a flourishing accessories trade through The Garden, and insights from global industry leaders on how best to progress the industry here in the Middle East, through the “d3 Fashion Talks”.

Over 15,000 guests from across the region and further afield visited the event throughout the four days, celebrating and supporting the wealth of established and emerging design talent in the Middle East. The presence of designers from Saudi, Qatar, Lebanon, Kuwait, Oman and the wider UAE resulted in unprecedented attendance from the regional community of fellow fashion designers, buyers, media and fashion enthusiasts.

“Fashion Forward Season Two added some vital new elements, including The Garden and The Showroom, to attract buyers and accessory collectors, while enhancing the foundations which made our inaugural season such a success.” said Bong Guerrero, Founder and CEO of Fashion Forward.

Sales and buying contacts were made for more than 50 designers taking part in The Garden, a showcase of accessories for the trade and consumers. A number of the designers featured on Fashion Forward’s catwalks were personally selected to take part in mentorship sessions with established brands including Rabih Kayrouz, while displaying ad-

the newly announced project Dubai Design District (d3), a new destination aimed at attracting the creative community and building a sustainable design and fashion industry in the Middle East.

Over 50 regional and international buyers attended the four day event, from the likes of Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s and Boutique 1. Also in attendance at all catwalk shows was Le New Black, a French online B2B showroom which currently has over 2800 retailers participating, including Printemps, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, Le Bon Marché and Les Galeries Lafayette. As part of the portal’s plans to expand the presence of Middle Eastern designers, they will choose one Fashion Forward designer to display on the site for one year.

Tokyo

If you are determined to source the best of what this wondrous city has to offer, then head to the Ginza district, which is famous for its glittering showrooms and elegant department stores displaying the latest fashion. Nearly every leading Japanese and international brand name fashion and cosmetics company has a presence here. Another great area offering high-end goods is Omotesando. Here you’ll find the large shopping centres and designer boutiques.

Hong Kong

The variety of words and shops in Hong Kong go hand-in-shopping-bag.

To soak in the luxury side of Asia’s world city head to the streets of Admiralty, Central and SoHo where shopping heads upward at The Landmark and a stronghold of up-market malls, including Alexandra, Chater, Jardine House, Exchange Square, Prince, and the spectacular IFC mall. Along Hollywood Road and south of it in SoHo, the shopping experience turns more boutique-style. If you find yourself across the harbour in Tsim Sha Tsui, take a short walk to Canton Road where you’ll be confronted with an infinite amount of luxury designer goods, not to mention Hong Kong’s biggest shopping mall – the enormous Harbour City and 1881 Heritage, a unique experience that blends history with luxury shopping.

Singapore

For the fashion-conscious, Singapore features the who’s who of fashion’s heavy hitters and has enough boutiques and malls to stretch even the most understanding of travel partner’s patience. Most of the international luxury labels gather in fluorescent shopping malls dotted on Orchard Road. The most prominent ones are ION Orchard and Paragon Shopping Centre.

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands is also worth your while if you make it that far.

In this fashion-forward city, shopping takes place mostly in malls due to the warm climate but that’s a non-issue since the malls here are on steroids! Ten Years of Cinematic Passion Dubai International Film Festival

Marking ten years of passion for cinema, Dubai International Film Festival has once more delivered eight days of heartwarming films, glamorous galas and appearances by top film personalities.

With some rather grand aspirations, DIFF has come a long way since the inaugural in 2004, which opened with one world premiere in its schedule. With just 10 years on its birth certificate, DIFF went from bringing one to seventy world premieres, and becoming the first festival to get its hands on David O. Russell’s hugely anticipated American Hustle.

The 10th edition’s Red Carpet Opening Gala kicked off with the screening of the acclaimed Omar, by Palestinian director Hany Abu-Assad. At the opening ceremony, DIFF presented its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards to veteran Egyptian film critic Samir Farid, who has championed Arab cinema for nearly 50 years, and Multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Martin Sheen, one of the most celebrated American actors of his generation.

A-list international celebrities that graced the red-carpet for the 10th edition of DIFF included Martin Sheen, Cate Blanchett, Stephan Lang and Michael B Jordan. From the Arab world, Hassan Youssef, Yousra, Ezzat El-Alaily and Nadia ElGendy were among the most acclaimed names to attend DIFF. For film goers, the festival had an amazing line up with 174 films to choose from, hailing from 57 different countries in 43 languages. Beyond that, The Dubai Film Market (DFM), which runs concurrently with the Festival, has continued to serve as the heart of the Festival’s industry initiatives and the only platform in the Middle East dedicated to the development, production and distribution of Arab film.

The festival has left an indelible impression on its guests, industry professionals and film fans, through its events, workshops, seminars and principal mandate of celebrating excellence in cinema and using it as a medium to promote open dialogue between cultures and nations.

With the great success the festival has achieved, surpassing even its own expectations, DIFF is likely to grow further to become one of the world’s most anticipated events in film and cinema.
