EDITOR’S MESSAGE Dear Readers, Welcome to the Motoring issue of Haute Dubai. As you may have noticed from the front cover of this issue, we are all about easing into the leather seating of four-wheeled wonders in genuine appreciation of these dazzling vehicles. Cars, beyond question, are objects that express our taste and identity. This issue is packed full of everything automotive, from our pick of the bestconvertibles – Porsche 918 being my personal favourite – to our feature narrating the illustrious McLaren legacy. However, along with the sleekpurring rides, there are non-automotive topics in this issue: our regular pages on Travel, Dining and Style will enthral you. For those of you who are more fascinated by the literal kind of horse power, the Dubai World Cup is around the corner, and dressing for the occasion is all part of the event itself. It’s the perfect opportunity to pull that something special out of your wardrobe and dress to impress. With the help of the men’s style experts at Knot Standard, we guide you through dressing for the races on page 40. And if by the time you are reading this, you are pinning down your next city-break, then check out our review of the alluring Waldorf Astoria in Ras Al Khaimah (page 46). Fusing the palatial lifestyle of the Arabian Peninsula with Jazz-age elegance, this property, to say the least, will enchant you. A DRIVING LEGACY McLaren through the ages
“ To do something well is so worthwhile
that to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy. It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one’s ability, for I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone.
”
Bruce McLaren
A Grand Prix winning racing driver, pioneering race car designer and the founder of the most successful Formula 1 team in history, he achieved an astonishing amount in his tragically short 32 year lifespan. This man is Bruce McLaren...
14
15
he drove for Jaguar, Aston Martin and Ford with whom he won the Le Mans 24 hours in 1966. Bruce was a true competitor who excelled at innovating and developing racing cars. It was this passion that led him to start his own company, firstly to develop and race a Cooper with a rearmounted Oldsmobile engine that helped to kick start the ‘big banger’ sports car era. In a show of loyalty to Cooper cars, Bruce engineered two 2.5litre Coopers for the 1964 Tasman series, which he won.
Bruce was born in 1937 in Auckland, New Zealand, and in 1963 founded Bruce McLaren Motor Racing in order to develop and race sports cars alongside his commitment as lead driver in the Cooper Grand Prix team. He had arrived in the UK in 1958 with the ‘Driver to Europe’ scheme that was designed to encourage antipodean drivers to compete with the cream of the world’s drivers. His mentor was Jack Brabham who introduced Bruce to Cooper Cars, the small Surbiton (London) based team who were poised to create a revolution with compact, lightweight Grand Prix cars powered by an engine located behind the driver. Following an auspicious start to his F2 career in 1958, he joined the F1 team for 1959 and stayed with Cooper for seven years. Bruce made an impact almost immediately by winning the 1959 US Grand Prix aged just 22 years and 80 days, at that time the youngest Grand Prix winner. He went on to win three more Grand Prix and countless sports car victories. Yet Bruce was no ordinary driver. His upbringing was steeped in cars and practical engineering at his parent’s service station and workshop. By the age of 14, he had entered a local hill climb in an Austin 7 Ulster and shown promise both as a driver and an engineer. Back to the 1960s’, Bruce raced, as did most Grand Prix drivers of this time, in sports cars, Grand Touring cars and more humble saloon cars. Alongside his commitment to Cooper in Formula 1,
McLaren becomes a constructor
In 1964, Bruce and his small team built the first true McLaren sports car, the M1A, which became a top contender in sports car racing both in Europe and America. After proving its credentials, the orders rolled in and 24 copies were built. Its successor, the M1B, was quicker still and carried Bruce’s nascent team into the inaugural Can-Am (Canadian-American Challenge Cup) championship. These cars were faster than the then current Formula 1 cars providing a spectacle of colour accompanied by the deep rumble of highly-tuned, large American V8 engines. The inaugural year of this championship did not yield a victory for McLaren, but Bruce came third in the series. The following year, 1967, saw the start of one of the most dominant episodes in motorsport

history. Now in its trademark papaya orange livery, Bruce and fellow Kiwi Denny Hulme’s Can-Am cars won five of the six races with Bruce taking McLaren’s first title. In the following five seasons, what became known as the ‘Bruce and Denny show,’ rolled on with Hulme winning the title in 1968 and 1970, while Bruce claimed his second title in 1969. Peter Revson won for McLaren in 1971. Between 1967 and 1971 the works McLarens won 37 of the 43 races including 19 one-twos. Such dominance won many admirers and many sales of racing sports cars and, just occasionally a customer car won too. Over the duration of the Can-Am series McLaren was the dominant victor with 43 victories, almost three times more than its closest competitor Porsche.
naco GP. Although saddled with underpowered and unreliable engines, Bruce scored a point for sixth place in only its third race, at Brands Hatch, with a further two points later in the season. It was a respectable start, but the real mark left by McLaren’s first F1 car was the innovation it featured. It took only another season for the McLaren F1 team to make it to the top step of the podium. A feat achieved, appropriately, by Bruce himself at the 1968 Belgian GP. The Cosworth-powered M7A was among the fastest cars of the season and was liveried in McLaren orange for the first time.
Tragedy at Goodwood
Bruce’s tragic death while testing at Goodwood on 2nd June 1970 would have thrown lesser teams into disarray, but under the guidance of Teddy Mayer and with the support of Denny Hulme, who stayed loyal to his compatriot’s team until his retirement in 1975, McLaren was on the cusp of achieving the ultimate success.
McLaren moves into F1
Back in 1965, Bruce had already decided to leave Cooper and build his own Formula 1 car for the first season of the new 3-litre formula. Having built a ‘mule’ chassis for testing in 1965, the first McLaren F1 car, the M2B, made its debut at the Mo-

A winning legacy
McLaren now has a heritage of 51 years, in 43 of which it has been represented at the pinnacle of the sport. In Formula 1, it has been on the podium on average once in every three Grands Prix. It has won no fewer than 165 of the 668 Grands Prix in which the team has competed. It has delivered 12 world championships for its drivers, Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Mika Häkkinen and, most recently, Lewis Hamilton. It has won eight Constructors’ Championships. As of the Spa Grand Prix 2009, McLaren has achieved 142 pole positions, 434 podiums, and 44 double wins (one-twos). In addition, McLaren has won five Can-Am titles with 43 race wins, three Indy 500 victories, the Le Mans 24 hour race and many F5000 and Formula A races.

The Magnificent Seven The 7 best cars to go open-top
To those whom automobiles are more than just a mode of transportation, having the open sky above you as you cruise around in a luxurious set of wheels has an exceptional emotional impact: hearing the thundering melodies of the engine, feeling the swift breezes as you whizz through, and inhaling the perfumes of the world swirling around you. With luxury interiors, striking bodywork and incredible engine power, here are the hottest convertible performers that inhabit most drivers’ dreams.
Bugatti Veyron Legend Meo Costantini The Bugatti Veyron Legend Meo Costantini is a special edition model part of the company’s “Les Legendes de Bugatti” series. As its name implies, the new Veyron pays homage to Meo Costantini. The car is based on the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse. Its 8-litre W16 engine can accelerate from 0–100 km in 2.6 seconds. The Vitesse was driven to a top speed of 408.84 km with the roof down in April 2013, making it the fastest production roadster ever built. The body of the Vitesse Legend “Meo Costantini” is primarily constructed of carbon fibre. The wings, doors, the parts behind the doors and corners of the front bumper are rendered in aluminium. The blue paintwork on the carbon fibre parts references France’s classic motorsport colour, as well as the Type 35. The new paint colour “Bugatti Dark Blue Sport” has been specially developed for the vehicle. The aluminium parts are hand-polished and coated with clear lacquer.

Price: $4.5 million Engine: 750 hp, 6.6-litre V12 Top Speed: 355 km/h Acceleration: 0-100 km/h in 2.9s
Lamborghini Veneno Roadster The Lamborghini Veneno Roadster is an open racing prototype with an extreme design and breathtaking performance. It is one of the world’s most exclusive automobiles – not more than nine units will be built during the course of 2014. The Veneno Roadster is extreme and guarantees an intense driving experience – because open means truly open. There is no roof, just a strong rollover bar for optimum safety. The design is focused on optimum aerodynamics and stability through fast corners – with handling akin to that of a racing prototype. Yet it is fully road legal. With a maximum output of 750 hp, the Veneno Roadster accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds, and top speed stands at 355 km/h. The Lamborghini Veneno Roadster is driven by a twelve-cylinder engine with a displacement of 6.5 litres and is equipped with the extremely fast-shifting ISR transmission with five modes, permanent all-wheel drive and a racing chassis.

Koenigsegg Agera R The Agera R is the result of Koenigsegg’s endless pursuit of perfection. The 2013 model features new Aircore hollow carbon fibre wheels, upgraded power and enhanced aerodynamics. The Agera R has an incredible top speed of approximately 440 km/h. The Agera R is the only roadster Hypercar with a detachable and stowable hardtop, thereby offering the best of two worlds. This, in combination with 120 litres of luggage space, truly combines extreme performance with everyday usability.

Price: $2.1 million Engine: 678 hp, 7.3-litre V12 Top Speed: 349 km/h Acceleration: 0-100 km/h in 3.4s
Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster Inspired to the same Pagani know-how involved in the Zonda Cinque project, with a production limited to only five cars, the Zonda Cinque Roadster is developed by the unparalleled Pagani team passionately committed to creating a Roadster version of each road-legal model. To obviate the austere appearance, the supercar seems to take on when the roof is removed and stowed under the front bonnet for open-top cruising, the carbon-titanium frame has been specifically redesigned to add a touch of rebellious elegance that contributes to create a unique mix of driving emotions. With the wind ruffling their hair, drivers enter into perfect symbiosis with the Mercedes-Benz AMG V12 engine with its astounding 678 hp as they ride on the wings of a delightful melody arising from the enormous air inlet, inconel and titanium exhaust system, exclusively designed at the Pagani atelier.

Ferrari 458 Spider This convertible variant of the 458 Italia is an effortless marriage of technology, design and beauty. It is also the first car ever to combine a mid-rear engine with a retractable folding hard top that delivers both unprecedented in-cabin comfort when closed and unparalleled Spider performance. The Ferrari’s aluminium retractable hardtop, which can be retracted in 14 seconds, offers a whole new set of emotions and adds a genuine sense of sportiness and power to weekend trips à deux. Given that most roofs would hide away where the 458 Spider’s V8 engine resides, certain engineering feats had to be achieved. The roof stows just ahead of the engine bay and its compact dimensions meant that Ferrari was able to add a small rear bench for additional luggage directly behind the front seats. Like the hardtop, the 458 Spider also offers some storage room under its front bonnet. A clever mix of sounds supplied by the car’s 570 horse power incorporates just the right notes, turning it into music to your ears: music that acts as a brilliant soundtrack not only to the pleasure of driving a Prancing Horse car, but in-car chat.
24
McLaren 12C Spider The McLaren 12C Spider is the second vehicle in the growing range of high performance sports cars from McLaren Automotive. This lightweight, mid-engine open-top sports car combines the astonishing performance of the 12C with the increased exhilaration of roof-down motoring. Unlike most other spiders or convertibles, the 12C Spider offers the same performance, handling and driver enjoyment as the fixedroof coupé version. The new 12C Spider is mechanically identical to the 12C. It uses the upgraded 625PS twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 engine mounted directly behind the cabin, which is part of the 12C Model Year 2013 upgrade. Acceleration – 0-100 km/h – takes just 3.1 seconds, the same as the coupé. Fuel consumption and emissions also remain the same, returning 11.7 l/100km on the combined cycle and 279g/km. The Retractable Hard Top on the 12C Spider is a fully automatic two-piece design, which can be raised or lowered in less than 17 seconds at speeds of up to 30 km/h (19 mph). When lowered, the roof stows beneath a body coloured hard tonneau cover, which incorporates twin buttresses. With the roof raised, the area beneath the tonneau cover can be used as additional luggage space.
Price: from $257,412 Engine: 616 hp, 3.8-litre V8 Top Speed: 329 km/h Acceleration: 0-100 km/h in 3.1s
25
Price: $845,000 Engine: 887 hp, 4.6-litre V8 Top Speed: 318 km/h Acceleration: 0-100 km/h in 2.5s
Porsche 918 Spyder The 918 Spyder embodies the essence of the Porsche idea: it combines pedigree motor racing technology with excellent everyday utility, and maximum performance with minimum consumption. The task faced by the development team was to create the super sports car for the next decade with a highly efficient and powerful hybrid drive. Developing the car from scratch, appropriately beginning with a sheet of white paper, allowed the team to come up with a no-compromise concept. The entire car was designed around the hybrid drive. The 918 Spyder therefore demonstrates the potential of the hybrid drive to a degree never seen before: the parallel improvement of both efficiency and performance without one being at the cost of the other. Drivers can experience this thanks to the unique all-wheel drive concept with a combination of combustion engine and electric motor on the rear axle and the second electric motor on the front axle. The main source of propulsion is the 4.6-litre V8 engine that produces 608 hp of power.

It’s About Time
For most people, a watch is a simple instrument that tells the time, but for some others, it’s far more than that… A luxury wristwatch is a marvel of engineering and a bold statement that speaks volumes of the wearer. Apart from telling time accurately, a luxury watch is a timeless piece of jewellery. Not to mention that any handcrafted watch sums up brilliance and artfulness of the watchmaker who made the ticking masterpiece. Because of this, a luxury watch is a treasure that surpasses the money that was paid for it. It is a treasure that once discovered, will not easily be parted with.
Carl F. Bucherer Manero Chrono Perpetual AED 119,250 This timepiece combines intricate mechanisms with practical functionality. Caringly conceived design features and expensive complications make the Maneros an attractive and a timeless watch family. For all lovers of traditional masterpieces of the watchmaker’s art, the Manero Chrono Perpetual features a perpetual calendar with correction-free display of the date at 12 o’clock, the day of the week at 6 o’clock, the month and leap year at 9 o’clock and the moon phase at 3 o’clock. The functional module which has been specially developed for Carl F. Bucherer also features a precise chronograph with the popular flyback function. A tachymeter scale completes the range of practical functions so typical for Carl F. Bucherer.
Jaeger Le Coultre Duomètre Sphérotourbillon AED 980,000 An authentic revolution in the field of Grande Complication models, the Duomètre Sphérotourbillon, stemming from almost 180 years of history and invention unique to Jaeger-LeCoultre, is equipped with an unprecedented multi-axis tourbillon. In addition to the axis of its carriage, the Sphérotourbillon has a second axis inclined at 20° and thereby freeing it from the effects of gravity in all positions. The revolutionary ‘Dual-Wing’ concept featured in Calibre 382, once again paves the way for an original function and makes this exceptional model the first tourbillon watch that is precisely adjustable, thanks to the small seconds flyback system.

The Speedmaster ’57 Omega Co-Axial Chronograph AED 32,400 Inspired by the design of the first Omega Speedmaster from 1957, the Speedmaster ’57 has straight lugs extending from the watch case, and the bracelet recalls that of the renowned chronograph. The black dial features two sub-dials instead of the three that are normally associated with the Speedmaster. This distinction is made possible by the placement of the 12hour and 60-minute counters on the same sub-dial at 3 o’clock, allowing a comfortable and intuitive chronograph reading. The second sub-dial at the 9 o’clock position keeps track of the passing seconds. The 18K gold bezel is easily recognisable with its familiar tachymeter scale. Powered by the Omega Co-Axial calibre 9300 – the first of Omega’s exclusive Co-Axial calibres to incorporate a chronograph function – the Speedmaster ’57 combines a vintage look and a revolutionary movement. This incredible technology is visible through the sapphire crystal back case.
Jaquet Droz Urban London Grande Seconde AED 87,400 Entering the sports watch field, Jaquet-Droz confirms its mastery of the aesthetic and technical concerns of the 21st century, based on the Manufacture’s values over the last two centuries: boldness, a sense of adventure and the love of a challenge. Inspired by the the number 8 representing infinity, the new Grande Seconde SW and the SW Chrono compete with the finest examples in watchmaking. Sporty, impulsive, yet classically distinguished, the Grande Seconde SW personifies the very values of Jaquet Droz. With a fluted bezel, hollowed horns and a strap in vulcanized rubber, the audacity of the sporty design combines modernity with the robustness of an all-titanium case.
Zenith El Primero Chronomaster Grande Date AED 44,300 El Primero, “The First” in Esperanto, is the watch that opened up the field boundless possibilities in 1969 by becoming the first ever automatic integrated column-wheel chronograph movement. Not to mention the world’s most precise high-frequency series-made calibre, which it still is to this day. It gave its name to a complete collection and single-handedly embodies the Zenith spirit: that of daring, authenticity and pleasure. This brand icon beats faster than the others and shatters the limits of precision. It adopts mechanical intricacies enabling it to establish new codes, reinventing them to give life to its ideas. It forges a legend inside a case, making its movement a major feat in its own right. It follows its instinct in creating, undertaking, building – and fulfilling its destiny. Constantly on the move, it welcomes new complications and unprecedented mechanisms, while remaining the most precise, the most reliable, the best-performing – and quite simply “The First”.

Dressing The Part
The Men’s Fashion Guide to Dubai World Cup from Knot Standard
The Dubai World Cup is the richest, glitziest horse race of the year. And fashion often outpaces hoof beats when it comes to what’s talked about after the last horse crosses the finish line. A smart dress code is strictly enforced and with the crème de la crème of the world’s rich and famous in attendance, you want to look smart, professional and on top of your game. Here’s Knot Standard’s guide to dressing for the races.
40
1
Start with a suit. You can probably get away with wearing a sport coat and trousers but why dress down for such a special day? Remember the grounds will be crawling with press and photographers and you don’t want to find yourself staring from the worst dressed column in the fashion pages the next day. Look smart and polished in a custom made suit and be noticed for your style and charm, not for looking sloppy or underdressed.
2
Go for colour but stay conservative. Definitely do not wear black. First of all, it’s the Dubai World Cup, not the Oscars. Secondly, texture and colour add interest to an otherwise conservative look making you more camera-friendly. Choose a Prince of Wales check in charcoal or navy. Or don a tweed to add a bit of British sartorial sensibility.
3
Wear a waistcoat (otherwise known as a vest). It will raise the formality of your suit by two notches and adds a layer of polish that looks great even if you have to remove your jacket. Don’t forget to leave the bottom button unbuttoned.
4
Wear a tie. A darker suit requires a lighter tie. Purple or orange or burgundy will stand out without being overbearing. For a slightly quirky and vintage look, try a bow tie. Bow ties are back in fashion and acceptable neckwear. Turn up the fashion quotient by pairing a polka dot bowtie with a striped pocket square in complementary colour.
8
5
No jeans, sneakers or flip flops. Seriously, you aren’t going to the beach so why would you?
Don’t forget the pocket square. It should complement, not match your tie. If you go with an orange tie with a navy suit, wear a blue and white polka dot pocket square.
9
Clean, polished and comfortable shoes. No scuffs or scratch marks. You may be on your feet for hours so find a pair that fit well.
6
Avoid French cuffs and cufflinks. You are at the races, not a Parisian café.
10
7
Choose one stand out accessory. Tie pin, pocket watch, aviators. Hit the right note of style with swag without being flamboyant or overstated.
No ascots or cravats. They look pretentious and anyway are prohibited at the Dubai World Cup.

Hotel Review
CHECKING IN: THE WALDORF ASTORIA RAS AL KHAIMAH The ideal place to experience the picturesque emirate
A New York fixture and pinnacle of hotel luxury since 1893, the legendary Waldorf Astoria is beloved for its rich history and for transforming the hotel experience from an ordinary facility for transients into a social centre of the city, as well as a prestigious destination for visitors. Nestled between the Hajar Mountains, a championship golf course, white sandy beaches and the azure waters of the Arabian Sea, the Waldorf Astoria in Ras Al Khaimah may be true to its Waldorf origins, but influences throughout the property are otherwise Arabian and evoke the feeling of palatial luxury. The design scheme has been conceived to acknowledge the centuries-old practice of pearl diving in
the nearby sparkling waters. The light-filled interiors, crafted by The Gallery HBA London, are reminiscent of the colours of the sea, evoking calmness and serenity. In the lobby, the set features the famed Waldorf Astoria tradition: Peacock Alley. Revolving around a spectacular marble fountain, this impressive signature lounge boasts all the signs of the magnificent plumage and parading associated with the Peacock. However, the real jewel in the lobby crown is the “Pearl” – an iconic clock based upon the ancient astrolabe, which was used to discern the exact prayer times in the Islamic faith. Modelled on a compass, the clock has been engraved with a cherished phrase extracted from a traditional Bedouin poem: “From your homeland travel

abroad to find glory”. As the largest of its kind in the world, the clock poses as an attraction for visitors in its own right.
The Rooms
Dining
The room-life at the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah is uplifting and beyond luxe. The lavish finishes continue the concept of being a waterside oasis from the desert, with neutral toned textiles punctuated by splashes of turquoise. Each room and suite features luxurious furnishings such as a walk-in closet and dressing room, an elegant marble bathroom with soaking tub and separate rain shower, bed headboards adorned with mother-ofpearl inlays and contemporary art mixes with traditional Islamic detailing. Conveniently, the room includes a working desk complete with wireless internet access and a two-line speaker phone with voicemail. Among the other upscale amenities and appliances that complement the convenience of each guest is a 42-inch LCD HDTV with premium channels, a latest generation iPod docking station and a coffee machine. It’s no exaggeration to say these are some of the most impressive hotel suites we’ve seen in a long time. While spectacular views can be enjoyed from each and every room, the most striking view can be admired from the panoramic balcony of the King Imperial Suite – an extravagant and unparalleled address suitable for only the most discerning guests. beverages. With nine diverse restaurants, lounges and bars to choose from, every craving will be thoroughly fulfilled. For those wanting a more formal dining experience, a private dining room at every restaurant is on hand to cater to your highest expectations. Lexington Grill is the hotel’s star restaurant. Named after the famed avenue in New York, this modern-style steak house is where steak lovers will revel. The unique air-dried meat and the freshness of the seafood here deserve reverence, and the service, praiseworthy. The second, more contemporary F&B offering is Umi, a trendy Japanese Restaurant bordered with vibrant Japanese gardens. The vibrant restaurant houses an engaging Teppanyaki grill where master chefs are only too delighted to show off their flairs. In a quieter Sushi corner resides the resident Sushi and Sashimi chef, sharing his intricate creations with appreciating guests. Offering a somewhat Middle Eastern fusion cuisine, Marjan is another majestic triumph in the culinary universe at the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah. And as
for poolside dining, Azure offers Mediterranean dishes and aperitifs, while Qasr Al Bahar serves as the main dining restaurant in the hotel, offering an international culinary experience for breakfast and dinner. Together with the iconic Peacock Alley, Camelia tea lounge offers a place to relax and showcase an array of world exclusive teas and coffees with the famed Waldorf Astoria high tea. The Cigar Bar is a more masculine affair, while 17Squared nightclub and lounge offers an intimate atmosphere for night-revellers

Beneath the hotel, the spa at Waldorf Astoria again takes inspiration from the sea. It has been imagined by The Gallery to capture the essence of floating underwater. This has been achieved through the calming blues of the raw silk clad walls, clever lighting and shadow in each of the twelve individually designed treatment rooms. The crowning glory of the Waldorf Astoria Spa is the VIP treatment room where couples can enjoy the peace and tranquillity of togetherness. With a luxuri-

True Waldorf Service concept is an extension of the personal service principles that were first introduced at the legendary Waldorf Astoria property in New York. Exclusively available to those guests booking direct with the hotel, a personal concierge is assigned to each qualified guest and acts as their primary contact, before, during and after a stay, to guarantee every requirement and request is met. Before they even arrive, guests receive a personalized email connecting them to their personal concierge and offering the opportunity to pre-arrange services and special requests attuned to their personal preferences and in relation to the destination. Once on-site, the personal concierge ensures guests receive true VIP treatment, starting with a private escort to your room. While the personal concierge serves as the guest’s primary point of contact, he or she is also their personal resource for hotel and resort information and for coordinating with other hotel staff to deliver seamless, personalized luxury. Outside of this, guests have 24-hour access to designated representatives with local expertise and an informed understanding of their needs. To further enhance the guest’s stay and take the hassle out of departure travel, services such as boxed lunches, home luggage delivery, transportation arrangements and expedited checkout can be arranged through the personal concierge.
ous sunken Jacuzzi, individual vanity counters and a large sofa for reclining, the couple’s treatment room is the ultimate in pampering. Overhead, a backlit, floating cascade of organically shaped “bubbles” creates the sensation of looking upwards from under the tranquil waters. To make every treatment exceptional, two differing product lines are used in the spa: Voya, totally organic, sustainable seaweed products which have been produced on the shores of Ireland by the same family for over 100 years, and Rodial, a ground breaking youth promoting range of skin products. Other recreation facilities include a 350 metre sandy beach, two outdoor swimming pools and a gym with top notch equipment. A private studio is set aside for guests wanting to partake in group exercise, yoga or pilates. Active guests can also enjoy flood-lit tennis courts and an 18-hole championship golf course within the vicinity. Extensive meeting facilities with state-of the art equipment lend themselves to a variety of events. Creatively, each of the seven meeting rooms is named after precious stones, metals or the famous pearl fishing industry in the area.

five-star hotel rooms which embrace minimalist design without compromising on comfort. Guests can enjoy panoramic golf course views from their private balconies as well as butler service, complimentary high speed internet and 24 hour room service. For the fitness enthusiast, a visit to the state-of-the-art gymnasium is a must, followed by a dip in the magnificent outdoor pool overlooking the 18th green, or a relaxing treatment at Angsana Spa.
Designed by the 2010 Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie, the Montgomerie championship golf course offers a world class golf experience. The course covers 265 acres, consisting of 123 acres of turf, 49 acres of man-made lakes, and 93 acres of landscaped gardens with 81 large bunkers. Undulating yet generous links-land style fairways challenge and intrigue all levels of player. The flat landing area of each fairway can be challenging to find, but is an immensely rewarding adventure. Large deceptive greens possess plenty of shape, creating some very trying putts. The signature hole is the par-three 13th, where the large green is in the shape of the UAE. This short par 3 boasting a large teeing area, requires a mid to short iron shot over water to a large green. The wind swirls around this area of the course so a confident tee shot will keep you away from the water and offer you the chance of birdie. Another interesting hole is the par-five 18th hole. Looking down this par is quite a daunting sight. This hole has spoilt many stories of a player’s great game of golf. There is no choice off the tee but to hit the fairway you look down on. Water lies short and on each side for over 300 yards. The second shot requires another wood which again needs full concentration with water left, right and just short of the green for the longer hitters. The fairway has a lot of undulations leaving it a lottery of what type of sloping lie you will be left with. The green is narrow and long with water at the front, so club selection is tough. There is no room for doubt over this shot. The swing needs to be made with full commitment or you will certainly pay the consequences. A ball landing on the green gives you a great opportunity of a birdie on this soft sloping green.
The Academy
The Academy by Troon Golf is a state-ofthe-art, fully floodlit practice facility, featuring a 662 yard nine hole par three academy course, a 24 acre practice range, multiple short game areas and practice bunkers. Indoors, your game can be analyzed in the swing studio utilizing V1 video swing analysis. Additionally, The Academy’s instructional team are available to refine your game through personalized attention, resulting in simple, focused steps any golfer can take to improve their swing, strategy and ultimately, their score.

Redefining Super Sports Car Experience The new Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4: A new dimension in Luxury Super Sports Cars
level. Its successor, the new Huracán, has been developed from scratch down to the very last detail and, like the Gallardo and most other Lamborghini models, derives its name from the world of bullfighting. The fighting bull Huracán of the Spanish Conte de la Patilla breed was known for his outstanding courage and strong sense of attack. He fought in Alicante in August 1879, showing his unrelenting character and remaining defiant and invincible, thus entering into the legend of fighting bulls’ history.
A new era is beginning for Automobili Lamborghini and the luxury super sports car segment: with the brand new Huracán Lamborghini is not only presenting the successor to the iconic Gallardo, but is also redefining the benchmark for luxury super sports cars in this segment. With its pure and unique design, an innovative technology package, outstanding dynamics and excellent quality, the Huracán offers a super sports car experience on a whole new level. The Huracán combines absolute performance with easy-to-drive road behavior and both luxurious and sport-oriented finish. With the Huracán, Lamborghini is taking a big step into the future, and enhancing the brand’s illustrious history with the next automotive legend.
Design
The new Huracán revolutionizes the design language of the Gallardo and is pure in its lines: precise technology and top level craftsmanship meet an audacious design with sharp edges, monolithic and sculptured volumes and precise surfaces. The starting point is the silhouette of the Huracán, born out of the desire of creating an automobile, whose profile is defined by only one line that merges the front with the cockpit and the rear of the car. The lateral

equipped with full LED illumination, but all other light functions also feature state-of-the-art LED technology as a standard feature for the first time in the segment.
Interior
The interior is dominated by an innovative cockpit. A 12.3 inch full-color TFT instrument panel delivers all car information to the driver, from rev counter to navigation maps and infotainment functions, and can be configured by the driver in different setups. Fine Nappa leather and Alcantara distinguish the interior, with several color combinations offered to ensure broad individualization options. The design of dashboard and central tunnel underline a new lightness in the interior. Superb craftsmanship guarantees the highest quality and sense of luxury throughout.
Chassis and powertrain
Systematic lightweight design and Automobili Lamborghini’s extensive expertise in carbon fiber come together in the Huracán’s new hybrid chassis – an integrated structure of carbon and aluminum elements. With a dry weight of 1,422 kg it enables not only the excellent power-to-weight ratio of just 2.33 kilograms per horse power, but also guarantees racecar precision with outstanding stiffness. The new 5.2 litre V10 engine delivers a maximum power of 448 kW / 610 HP at 8,250 rpm and a maximum torque of 560 Nm at 6.500 rpm. In the new “Iniezione Diretta Stratificata” (IDS), direct and indirect gasoline injections are smartly combined. This results in more power and torque with lower fuel consumption and emissions. The top speed of over 325 km/h and the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and to 200 km/h in 9.9 seconds only partially describe the dynamic experience at the wheel of the Huracán. Also thanks to the Stop & Start technology, the combined EU consumption figure has been further reduced to 12.5 litres per 100 km. The engine complies with EU6 emissions regulation.
Driving dynamics
The power of the V10 engine is brought to the road via the new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission “Lamborghini Doppia Frizione” (LDF) and fully electronically controlled four-wheel drive system. The different driving modes of the Huracán ensure extensive modification in road behavior. In particular they influence the set-ups of several systems, such as the gearbox and engine behavior, the four-wheeldrive and electronic stability control. The Huracán’s carbon-ceramic brakes are a standard feature for consistently superb braking performance. The “Lamborghini Dynamic Steering” variable steering ratio system and magneto-rheologic suspension damper control are both available as options for further customization of the Huracán’s dynamic behavior.
windows come together to create a hexagonal form inserted like a glass jewel in the car’s profile. Also by night is the Huracán unmistakably a Lamborghini. Not only are the main headlamps

Viva la Riva
‘European Powerboat of the Year’ to debut at Dubai International Boat Show
Aside from the chance to see the ‘World’s Biggest Yacht,’ visitors to this year’s Dubai International Boat Show will be able to experience a special slice of Italian luxury thanks to Art Marine, a leading yacht dealership and marina operator which, for the very first time, will reveal the brand-new 68-foot Riva Ego Super yacht in the Middle East. Having undergone a thorough restructuring with the appointment of new CEO, Greg Stinner, in June 2013, the UAE-based Art Marine has a new overall fresh outlook, and with the signing of a deal to become one of the regional dealerships for the Ferretti Group, Art Marine is now the exclusive supplier of Riva and its stunning array of yachts – including the 68’ Ego Super - in Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE. The story of Riva began in Italy more than 170 years ago, when Pietro Riva relocated his carpentry from Lake Como to Lake Iseo. Having shifted his focus from boat repair to boat manufacturing,
he started Riva’s legacy and developed an expertise in building 1st class boats for Riva’s discerning and ever-growing clientele. Today, Riva is recognized as the boutique shipyard for some of the world’s most elegant and sought-after yachts. The sleek design of the 68’ Ego Super is typical of a Riva built yacht, reflecting the company’s tradition of seamlessly mixing elegance with innovation. In the cockpit the reclining sofas can face in either direction, allowing for the ultimate flexibility for onboard guests, whilst guests seated at the bow can make use of a specially designed electric awning, once again showing that adopting new technologies does not come at the expense of comfort. Inside it is the same story, with everything being reexamined to improve the ownership experience. The deck has been raised to allow additional headroom in the cabins, giving a more airy and spacious feel for the occupants. In addition the main salon has been moved to the upper deck, again alter-

ing how the space is best used. The 68’ Ego Super, which has won numerous awards since its international launch, including the prestigious “European Powerboat of the Year” and the renowned “Millennium Yacht Design Award,” also incorporates the PLC technology-based Gi8 system, which controls, manages and monitors all on-board systems. This system particularly suits sporty yachts such as the 68’ Ego Super and once again gives the boat the edge over its rivals. Everything in the 68’ Ego Super has been improved, re-engineered or re-designed for 2014, making it one of the very best yacht in its class. The Italian brand has once again come up with a product that will suit almost every customer’s need. Middle East yacht buyers are extremely selective and rightly so. Riva and Art Marine understand this, and deliver vessels that more than surpass any potential owner’s expectations.
