WELCOME TO THE PHILANTHROPY ISSUE of Haute Living Los Angeles, where we highlight the people who truly embody the meaning behind the ‘City of Angels’. Arguably, no one is more giving than Modern Family star Ty Burrell, an active and tireless supporter of Kids in the Spotlight, which helps children in the foster care system grow and express themselves through filmmaking. We’ve also featured Sharon Stone, who, in addition to providing auctioneer services for many non-profit organizations—raising substantial funds in the process—is spearheading this year’s Make-AWish Gala. Brittany Snow, the Pitch Perfect 3 star and creator those who feel alone a solid sense of community. And, finally, we join international polo player Nacho Figueras to discuss his work with Sentebale (a non-profit that supports children affected by To keep up with our haute news and events, be sure to follow us on Instagram @hauteliving, @kamalhaute, @sethsemilof.

“PITCH PERFECT 3” STAR BRITTANY SNOW IS STRIVING TO MAKE THE WORLD A MORE UNITED PLACE BY SHOWING THAT LOVE IS LOUDER THAN HATE

ECAUSE SHE’S A DEAD RINGER FOR A YOUNG REESE WITHERSPOON AND stars in a masssive box office franchise, you might expect that Pitch Perfect star Brittany Snow leads a charmed life. We’re not going to beat around the bush here—you’d be right. But things haven’t always been harmonious for the actress, which is why, today, she’s using her voice to ‘love louder’… and she demands to be heard. In September 2010, Snow, then 24, was moved to create her foundation, Love is Louder,
after seeing the outpouring of support for those who had committed suicide as a result of bullying. The collaboration with The Jed Foundation and MTV strives to create a connected community of people. “I saw this outpouring of emotion online for these kids who didn’t know who to ask for
help or support from all of these different groups—people were really banding together,”
she says, noting that, while amazing, the support was a little segregated. “Each group had a particular idea that they were representing: [there were support groups] for the LGBT community, or different ethnicities, but there wasn’t one inclusive place where you could find support. I wanted our similarities to be stronger than the things that divided us.” Seeing so many kids simply give up struck a chord for Snow, who herself had also been a victim of bullying when she

n ABC’s newest series premiere, Once Upon a Time, actress Gabrielle Anwar takes on a role that’s unfamiliar territory for her— the diabolical, manipulative stepmother to Cinderella, Lady Tremaine. In a whimsical, old-world fairy tale meets new-world story, iconic fictional characters and modern-day collide into a complex, mythical drama series set in the town of Hyperion Heights. The show has been widely praised by audiences around the country for six seasons, and the seventh season marks a
significant reboot of the show, meaning new characters, locations and a new “curse”—it also marks the debut of Gabrielle Anwar and fellow newcomer Dania Ramirez to the well-established cast. Here, Haute Living catches up with the star and discusses the new show, shooting in Vancouver, life in Miami, her directorial debut and what else she’s working on in between: HL: Tell us about Once Upon a Time. How is it going so far? GA: It’s very interesting to get back in front of the camera after having been behind it for the last three years, so it’s an exercise of discipline and surrender.
HL: How were you cast in your role? GA: I had been reading scripts on and off for the last three years, with not much intention of doing anything unless it really tickled my fancy. I was visiting my daughter Willow in California, and I got a call from my agent and he was telling me there’s a great role of the wicked stepmother in Once Upon a Time on ABC, and I said “Once Upon a Time” out loud because I couldn’t fully hear what he was saying, and my 13-year-old daughter starting bouncing around the store exclaiming, “Mommy, you have to do it! You have to do it!” So basically that’s how I ended up living in Vancouver for 10 months [laughs].
HL: That’s exciting. How is it to enter the show in the midst of its seventh season as a regular? GA: Well, it’s always tricky to enter a new job when things are well established no matter what line of business you’re in because there’s a certain environment that’s been established from day one, and you’re tip-toeing around just to find your footing. The cast has been very welcoming, which is really nice. I’ve found that the trickiest thing is for me to step back into the schedule of being on a television show because it is very demanding and filled with long hours. It’s tough because we’re all characters playing two versions of themselves. It’s almost like filming a feature film every week.
HL: Explain what the day looks like. GA: We film a lot of footage that we don’t know if we necessarily need, but it’s good to have in case. We have to film tremendous amounts with elaboPHOTOS COURTESY OF GABRIELLE ANWAR

cause I usually end up playing someone with their heart in the right place. But I’ve been doing this for 33 years, and it’s fun to finally get to play a different type of role after all this time. It’s quite liberating.
HL: What’s the dynamic like between the cast on set? Who do you primarily work with? GA: I work with a young actress named Adelaide Kane who was the star of the TV show Reign. She is a queen—absolutely stunning and incredibly gifted as an actress. I also spend a lot of time with Dania Ramirez who plays alongside me as my stepdaughter Cinderella—she was in the show Devious Maids prior. She’s fantastic, and I have to say it’s such a pleasure to be playing the role with a Latina Cinderella—she’s so fresh and alive, and she has this tremendous energy. We’ve become quite friendly as we’ve both been acclimatized as the new chicks on the block.
HL: What’s it like shooting in Vancouver? What’s your favorite part about the new city? GA: I love the scenery—the landscaping is extremely conducive to hiking, which I’ve been partaking in, and that’s something I miss terribly in Miami because that’s not really available. And the Canadian people here are just so chill and friendly, and it’s a whole different pace of life up here. But I am missing the warm weather in Miami. I was born and raised in England where I was conceptually frozen all the time, but it’s been awhile since I got a taste of the cold weather! I am looking forward to those ThermaCare heat wraps from the pharmacy so I can wrap myself up like a mummy [laughs]. I love the convenience of a tropical climate. And of course, I miss my family and my bed! There’s nothing quite like your own bed.
HL: Of course. Aside from your new role in Once Upon a Time, how have things been following the debut of your documentary, Sexology? GA: It’s been really well received, which I am extremely proud of. We’ve
remarkable to see what comes out of it.
translated it into a number of different languages so that it could be more
HL: What’s your favorite part about getting to play Lady Tremaine? Is this a totally different type of role for you compared to others in the past? GA: My favorite thing about this character is that she is diabolical. She is
it asking for contacts so that they can start their own healing process, which
really cruel and vicious and doesn’t apologize for it. She’s quite fun to play. I don’t see any resemblance to pretty much any character I’ve ever played be-

Some eccentric pieces to take note of are a handcrafted sterling silver protractor, ruler, drinking straw, paint can and even first aid box. These covetable accessories possess a whimsical wink that is quintessentially Tiffany’s. “I think what makes the collection unique is that it incorporates the best PHOTOS COURTESY OF TIFFANY

quality, craftsmanship and design with a level of functionality that allows you to use these things every day,” says Krakoff. Since taking the reins in January as chief artistic officer, Krakoff has already started the transformation to freshen the image of the 180-year-old jewelry company. His first major footprint is on the fourth-floor home and accessories floor of Tiffany’s Fifth Avenue flagship, where luxury becomes even more luxurious and houses the new holiday collection.

The chronograph complication has become synonymous with Hublot with the birth of the Big Bang, so it’s no wonder that it set out to develop a chronograph movement of its own. The Hublot Big Bang Unico Colored Sapphire timepiece (above)
FOR HUBLOT, INNOVATION IS A WAY OF LIFE. It was a key ingredient when Carlo Crocco founded the brand in 1980, and it erupted into the ‘Art of Fusion’ when marketing genius Jean-Claude Bivier joined the company and introduced this phrase to the watch world. Today, the company continues to blow our minds and prove that this art of fusion is more than just a marketing slogan—it’s a solid part of Hublot’s DNA. UNICO The chronograph complication has become synonymous with Hublot with the birth of the Big Bang, so it’s no wonder that it set out to develop a chronograph movement of its own. The company approached this challenge from multiple angles, with a focus on reliability, user friendliness and serviceability. But Unico also posed another challenge: while Hublot is by no means a high volume brand,
the success of the Big Bang means Unico has substantial production, and each one needs to meet the high haute horlogerie-level standards set out for it. Hublot achieves this by utilizing a partially automated production that involves robotic machining, stone fitting, oiling and part of the assembly to ensure the supreme, consistent quality. The Unico is also fully integrated, meaning it has been developed from the start as a chronograph. Rather than being an automatic movement with a chronograph module placed on top, the gears and levers for the chronograph function are an integral part of the movement as a whole. Since Hublot developed it from scratch and inhouse, it could incorporate some unique features. The column wheel is placed on the front of the movement, visible through the half-transparent dial that most Big Bangs have, while the pallet fork and escapement wheel are made from silicon

es and affixed to a platform that can be removed easily when the watch is in for service. It’s not only the watchmaker who will reap the benefits from the movement, though. Thanks to bi-directional winding, Unico is a very efficient movement and offers a power reserve of 72 hours. The chronograph itself is a flyback—so you can have an instant restart of all the counters, instead of losing time by having to stop, reset and start the chronograph again. This is particularly handy when you measure lap times for races or other sporting events. Sometimes, user friendliness can also be found in the details, such as a minute counter that can register 60 minutes instead of the more common 30, which makes it much easier to read the elapsed time. And it’s one of the many things that make the Unico stand out from the crowd.
WONDERFUL WATCHES The making of a Hublot watch
MAGIC GOLD When it comes to explaining Hublot’s ‘Art of Fusion’, there’s almost no better example than being the first and only watch brand to create the impossible: scratch-resistant 18-karat gold. By merging pure gold

Although 18-karat gold can perfectly handle everyday life for decades, owners will notice that it is more prone to scratch than stainless steel.
LuxuryCORNER Haute Watches with ceramic, Hublot combines the precious look of gold with the scratch-resistant capacity of ceramic while maintaining the 18-karat purity threshold. Most gold watches are made of 18-karat gold because pure 24-karat is simply too soft. But other companies use copper or nickel, which also change the color to make rose gold or white gold, respectively. Although 18-karat gold can perfectly handle everyday life for decades, owners will notice that it is more prone to scratch than stainless steel. The true value of Hublot’s accomplishment is clear when using the Vickers scale. Normal 18-karat gold is around 400 Vickers, depending on the exact alloy. But the new Magic Gold is about 1,000 Vickers— and, with that, it is even more scratch-resistant than steel, which ranks at 600. While the exact process for which Hublot is able to combine the best of both worlds is a closely regarded secret, the watches crafted from it have an indescribable glow that makes you realize they are something truly special.

SAPPHIRE If the luxury watch brand’s other accomplishments weren’t impressive enough, Hublot has also been a pioneer of creating watch cases from sapphire crystal. More recently, it’s shown even more progress by introducing colored sapphire cases. And while this may sound easy, it’s far from it. To create the Big Bang Unico in blue sapphire, for example, Hublot heats the raw material for sapphire— aluminum oxide—with chromium to a temperature between 2,000 and 2,050 degrees Celsius. The sapphire takes on a blue color from this process. But, in a similar process, Hublot was able to create red sapphire by using iron instead of chromium. Hublot has had to overcome numerous challenges, unfortunately, regarding this design. For one thing, these watches are limited 250-piece editions, but all 250 pieces need to have the same hue. Another issue is that, in order to craft a case, you need a substantial sapphire to cut it from and the larger the sapphire has to be, the more difficult it is to make. Last but not least, there are the usual challenges to grow sapphire crystals, such as bubbles and cracks that can make it unsuitable. The end result, however, is an incredible feat by Hublot—not to mention, a world-first!

GLENDRONACH AUDEMARS REGAL: The GlenDronach distillery, in Speyside, was built in 1825 that was originally led by one James Allardice. GlenDronach are well-known for producing some of the most beautiful sweet sherried style Scotch Whisky on the market today, largely owed in part to Billy Walker (Master Distiller). While GlenDronach has made a name for itself, it has long been the key to Teacher’s blends. As mentioned before, GlenDronach are very well-known for producing Scotch matured in ex-sherry Oloroso & Pedro Ximenez casks, which give rich, sweet and creamy notes. The GlenDronach 18-yearold has been named after the renowned founder of the distillery, James Allardice. This exceptional sherried single malt, matured in the finest Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, is non-chill filtered and like all GlenDronach drams, is of natural colour, richly sherried malt is truly unforgettable.
TASTING NOTES:
On the nose: there is an initial waft of dark chocolates, fudge and mixed fruits. This is closely followed by oranges, raisins, vanilla and a suggestion of zest. Light notes of spices start to emerge in the form of cinnamon, alongside some inviting herbaceous notes. Rounding off the nose is a hint of black grapes, honey and walnuts. On the palate: those mixed fruit notes nosed are ever-present, followed up by that luxurious dark chocolate. There are notes of mixed fruits, marzipan, raisins and a nutty note of walnuts that start to emerge. There is a lovely suggestion of Morello cherries, coupled with oranges, leather, cinnamon, all-spices and toasted oats. The finish: is long, dry and sweet, with lingering smoke, peppery spices and
THE VERDICT:
This GlenDronach 18-year-old scotch is, in my opinion, sublime. The 12yo was special and is a beautiful entry scotch into the GlenDronach sherried core range. With a seductive array of notes that just keep unfolding that have been finely balanced, this richly sherried 18yo ‘Allardice’ GlenDronach malt is truly unforgettable.
ROYAL The Royal Oak is perhaps one of the most distinctive watches around. With its masculine octagonal shape, exposed screws and integrated bracelet, it is easy to recognise from afar. But more importantly, the watch is a legend for pioneering the use of stainless steel in haute horlogerie, thanks to a watch designer, Gerald Genta, whom was inspired by the porthole of a naval ship. Though back in 1971 when this inspiration led to the Royal Oak, Mr. Genta wasn’t yet the household name it is today. The SIHH 2017 AP Royal Oak Extra-Thin ‘Jumbo’ reference 15202 in 18-carat yellow-gold is much of the same, which is why it is still so 2 popular and also why it is timeless. It is the same iconic and dependable watch it was 40 years ago, of course with a few tweaks here and there. I think the most interesting fact here about this new 15202 is that this is the first time the ‘Jumbo’ is making an appearance in yellow-gold in some 20 plus years – something that is easily forgotten. The Audemars Piguet 15202BA features the all familiar petite tappiserie dial, which is one of my favourite aspects of the Royal Oak. The ability for the dial to reflect off different gradients based on different light sources is a joy to look at and it is further emphasised by the warmth of the gold case. That said, the biggest news from the Le Brassus based watch manufacturer is the new pairing of the yellow-gold case with blue petite tappiserie dial. Good design is timeless but this element alone isn’t enough the brand also has to believe in the timelessness of the product too and this is something Audemars Piguet have always done, hence its popularity and longevity.

YAMAZAKI 18 LANGE 1815 FLYBACK
PERFECTION:
Yamazaki is one of the first Japanese distilleries to be built. Established in 1923 and situated in the vale of Yamazaki, the whisky is born from the natural craftsmanship and climate of Kyoto, Japan’s ancient capital, an area of dense bamboo grooves at the foot of Mt. Tennozan. In 1984, the Yamazaki 12-year-old single malt whisky was released. The 12-year-old expression is intense, confident and yet elegant: this single malt whisky directly presents these features of the Yamazaki distillery. That said, the 18-year-old expression only further enhances these characteristics. Over the past few years, Yamazaki has won the approval of many whisky aficionados alike, as well as winning a few awards along the way too. The 18-year-old expression has, somewhat, become the cornerstone of Yamazaki, tickling the taste buds of those who chose to venture further than the brilliantly balanced 12.
TASTING NOTES:
On the nose: you’ll get a lovely waft of raisins, vanilla and a viscose like note, alongside rich tones of cherry, mizunara and salted caramel. These initial notes are closely followed by turmeric, candy, a slight buttery flavour, liquorice, some subtle spices, cinnamon, nutmeg and dry oak. Finishing off the nose are notes of popcorn, a tobacco like note, apricot and coffee. On the palate: you’ll be able to taste those salted caramel notes, followed by vanilla, sherry, candy floss and raisins. These are followed by notes of aniseed, stem ginger, some spices and a subtle menthol note. Richer currant like notes start to emerge, alongside some mizunara, tobacco and marzipan. Rounding off the nose are notes of red apples, a faint waft of lychees, acacia honey, shortbread and rich dark chocolate. The finish: is long, sweet, spicy with lingering oaky nuttiness.
THE VERDICT:
The Yamazaki 18 is no less than perfection. The balance and richness of the 18-year-old expression is just sublime. While it’s rich, it also possesses some delicious delicate notes that only become apparent the more the dram opens up. In our opinion, we don’t believe there is any need to add water, however, do so if required. Also leaving it to breathe for up to 10 minutes, also yields more depth in flavour.
INFO:
PRECISION The Lange 1815 Flyback Chronograph has been considered by many – us included – as the perfect Lange Chronograph. A title that is arguably still held by the Datograph but perhaps the absence of an outsized date window and the simplicity of the 1815 Flyback makes it worthier of this title? Only time will tell. The dial is a mono-tone affair of black, with white accents marking the sub dials, hours, minute track and measurement scale. The outer pulsation scale has been placed on a slight inclined flange, with the 2 railroad track minute markers placed on the flatter surface of the dial. The dial features full Arabic numerals for hours and two engine-turned subsidiary dials, which are on ever so slightly sunken level from the main dial, recording chronograph minutes and continuous seconds. At the heart of the new Lange 1815 Flyback chronograph is the calibre L951.5 movement, that makes use of a column-wheel control and a stepped pinion for the precisely jumping minute counter. Crafted to the highest Lange quality standards, decorated and assembled by hand; the L951.5 is a sight to behold and can be admired through the exhibition case back. The 39.5 mm case is what makes this Lange pretty much perfect, it’s no fuss yet simple and functional design is a standout feature. Made in white-gold, all angles and curves have been polished to a mirror shine, with a brushed mid-case section, which is fixed to the wrist via black hand-stitched crocodile strap with a solid white-gold Lange prong buckle. The Lange 1815 Flyback Chronograph is a connoisseurs’ chronograph that has been engineered with German precision.

LuxuryCORNER Haute Yacht SUPERYACHT LĂœRSSEN ARETI:
AN INTIMATE TITAN
Just finished its maiden voyage in the Mediterranean.
It started as project Sasha and was delivered as Areti in July, just on time for its maiden Mediterranean summer. A family oriented yacht with a sporty silhouette comes after a line of predecessors; owner upgraded whilst continuing in same subtle cream hull and white superstructure accents. This is the fourth launch this year for the German shipyard and at 85 meters this voluminous yacht has made its debut at the Monaco Yacht Show. As you can note from the pictures available, not many will ever see the insides of this six deck layout. However, Haute Living was invited on board at the launch and we were awed with amazement. Swift elevators commute between the floors, which for example enables guests arriving by helicopter to change into their cycling wear and breeze off to an exploring ride moments later. Yes, the yacht features not only various saunas and massage rooms, but also cycling quarters as the owner and entourage are all avid sport exercisers. Both interior and exterior have been invented at Winch design and if you glance at the yacht you will immediately notice a massive, almost 15 meter bow. A landing pad stripes a large H sign while master stateroom and two VIP suites are located on the same floor. Expect lots of attention to detail all over, from delicately woven cashmere blankets on beds, to hand-embroidered silks on the furniture, even brushed, antiqued brass ironmongery. The basis of styling is straight grain and figured Makore timber, which enhances the luxurious atmosphere. Noticing this vessel from the stern will start with its name, Areti.

A decade on the market, with minor changes and tweaks, this silhouette still looks romantically gorgeous. This newest model isn’t a mere make-up powder application, but actually features a restyled front, that includes an octagonal grill, reshaped air intakes and new bumpers. The result are better aerodynamics; a drag coefficient value down to 0,33. If anywhere, this matters on a convertible. Less turbulence and whisper like conversations with your co-driver. As I accelerate from another curve, being the only car by far and a lot, I almost feel compassionate. For potential bystanders. Onlookers. Curious minds alike. It is an event, even a spectacle, that this car is to look at and even more, to hear. You see, the V8 in its classical 90 degree V-shaped layout features a cross-plane crankshaft. This gives it one of the most exhilarating engine sounds in the industry today. I call this car a tribute to living, to years before the world crisis entered our everyday vocabulary.

THE TINY TESLA FOR TOTS THE TESLA MODEL S This kids car is available online now.
Treat your little speed racer to a miniature version of the Tesla Model S this holiday season. Meet the tiniest Tesla for your tots. Radio Flyer and Tesla have come together to create a miniature version of the car’s Model S for your little speed racer. Several of its features elevate this model from its competitors. First off, just like the full-sized version, it’s fully customizable. That includes the paint color, the rims and even the license plate, among other components. In fact, the four paint colors – red multi-coat, deep blue metallic, midnight silver metallic and pearl white multi-coat – are the exact same paint colors available for the real deal. The car even comes with an easy charge system and a choice between the standard lithium ion battery, or the long-range lithium ion battery, both powered by Flight Speed Lithium Ion Technology for extended driving time. The car also has working headlights and a working horn, as well as forward and reverse functionality, and what the brand calls a “frunk,” or a front trunk, to store the essentials. The spacious interior holds up to 81 lbs., and includes connectivity to an MP3 player, via a cord, so your kids can listen to their favorite tunes while cruising. BLOOM, BABY! Functionality meets sleek design in the world’s tallest high chair for your growing baby. Meet the high chair of you and your baby’s dreams. Bloom has created one of the coolest looking children’s high chairs, which also happens to be the highest in the world. The fully customizable chair comes in a variety of colored chrome finishes, including rose gold, titanium and yellow gold, as well as customizable coloring for the seat pad and the seat itself. The Fresco chrome high chair has a recline system with three positions (lie-flat for newborns, semi-recline and upright), as well as an easily adjustable height function, so that baby can sit at eye-level with the adults. The model is suitable for newborns and will last your baby until he/she is at school age. The products use sustainable woods, as well as recyclable plastics and metals, while steering clear of harmful elements, such as lead, BPA and formaldehyde, keeping baby safe and secure. The company was founded by four dads, with the hopes of creating modern, children’s products that were both functional and design-oriented: “We believe parents and baby should begin their life together in style, with quality products that reflect modern living and express the new family’s sense of identity.” And with super celebrity mom and dad endorsements, including reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian and UFC fighter Conor McGregor, we couldn’t agree more!

The stunning performence of Turnadot
AN OPERATIC FÊTE Inside the San Francisco Opera’s Glamorous Opening Ball The San Francisco Opera opened its 95th season on September 8 with Opera Ball 2017 at Imperial Palace. Its Chinese imperial-style gala was co-chaired by Courtney Labe and Maryam Muduroglu with an 800-guest black-tie cocktail reception—including magnificent Dede Wilsey-funded flora decorations shaped like dragons and peacocks—in the foyer of the War Memorial Opera House. Afterwards, an elegant dinner by McCalls Catering was held nearby in the pavilion tent created by event designer Riccardo Benavides. The successful opening night featured a performance of Turandot, Puccini’s last masterpiece in British artist David Hockney’s colorful production, starring Martina Serafin in the title role, Brian Jagde as Calaf, Toni Marie Palmertree as Liú and Raymond Aceto as Timur. It was previously performed on opening night of the Opera in 2002, but was stunningly refurbished for 2017— captivating the eyes, ears and emotions of the entire audience for three hours. The Opening Night also celebrated San Francisco Opera music director Nicola Luisotti’s last season with the company by awarding him the San Francisco Opera medal onstage after the performance. Maestro Luisotti’s distinguished nine-year tenure included

more than 40 operas and concerts; he will leave the company for New York at the end of 2017/2018 season. Matthew Shilvock, the general director, and David Gockley, the general director emeritus, thanked him for his wonderful contributions. Gockley recalled the powerful impression Luisotti made conducting Verdi’s La Forza del Destino in 2005, stating “With the company’s historic connection with the Italian community of San Francisco, I immediately knew that Nicola was the right person to re-establish that connection and be our music director.” Shilvock then praised Luisotti’s passionate commitment to music-making and his many memorable performances with the San Francisco Opera. “Nicola has raised the bar to tremendous heights and [we all] benefited immeasurably from his commitment to this company and his devotion to musical excellence.” Luisotti gave his heartfelt thanks to the San Francisco community—where he has lived since 2009, leading over 230 performances like the annual open-

ing weekend’s “Opera in the Park” (an annual free concert, one of the city’s most cherished traditions, co-presented by the San Francisco Chronicle and featuring legends from Luciano Pavarotti to Plácido Domingo). The Maestro then promised to return for future seasons as a guest conductor. As a fitting end to the night, there was also a festive after-party and dancing in the pavilion.

HBO CELEBRATES THE EMMYS The stars were out in full force at HBO’s Emmy night shindig, held at the Pacific Design Center. As usual, the annual event was the hottest ticket in town. The David E. Kelley-produced Big Little Lies series enjoyed a big win at the awards, cleaning up with eight trophies—including Best Limited Series, Best Movie/Miniseries Actress (for Nicole Kidman), Best Movie/Miniseries Supporting Actor (for Alexander Skarsgård), Best Movie/Miniseries Supporting Actress (for Laura Dern) and Best Movie/Miniseries Director (for JeanMarc Vallée). It’s no wonder that that table, which also featured producer and co-star Reese Witherspoon and Kidman’s country singer hubby Keith Urban, was the place to be. INTERVIEW BY SETH SEMILOF
The LuxuryBEAT One of our favorite pieces was the MB&F Legacy—it was a huge success! Why did you stop this line with your last edition over the summer? We did not stop the whole line, but only the original Legacy Machine No.1, which had been launched in 2011. Even though we continue to craft and sell about 60 pieces per year, it was time to retire this crucial piece in our history. The main reason is to increase desirability of the pre-owned pieces so that the existing owners can maximize the price when reselling them. And we needed the LM1 to give way to the brand new Legacy Machine, which launched on October 10. Tell us about the $36,000 Octopod table clock. Octopod is arguably one of the most amazing clocks we have imagined to-date. It is as if an octopus had dreamed of being a marine chronometer, or the other way around. When was “Creativity is the last time you saw a clock with two hands and an addiction, eight legs? We reverse-engineered the gimbal on and, like all a marine chronometer to enable the clock sphere addictions, to turn 360 degrees on two different axes, and you need the each leg has a click system [that] allows you to adjust the height as you wish. More importantly, dosage to continuously the regulating system of the movement developed by L’Epée 1839 gyrates on the tip of the minute increase.” hand—one could say a 60-minute tourbillon, in fact—and is suspended on a plate of glass in the midst of the sphere, as if it is floating in it. [It’s] a truly incredible piece!
Maximilian Büsser divulges how his haute watch brand, MB&F, rose to the top FOR OVER A DECADE, MAXIMILIAN BÜSSER & FRIENDS (MB&F)—an haute horlogerie brand born in Switzerland—has been setting the standard for beautiful timepieces. Haute Living sat down with its namesake, owner and creative director to discuss his inventive watchmaking, his relationship with Los Angeles and the hottest innovation on the market today: the $36,000 “Octopod” table clock.
ALL ABOUT MB&F (Clockwise from top) Maximilian Büsser, the LM1, HM1 and the Octopod
What’s the secret to keeping MB&F so successful? Creativity is an addiction and, like all addictions, you need the dosage to continuously increase—or else you feel empty and in need. Once a piece has been launched, I more or less lose interest in it. It is always the next creation or creations [that] get my adrenaline [going]. How does MB&F stand out from its competitors in the watch world? [Since] the beginning of MB&F, 12 years ago, we had a very different outlook on watchmaking. For us, it is art and, as such, we deconstruct traditional, very high-end watchmaking to reconstruct it into a piece of 3D kinetic art. I cannot sing, paint or write, but give me the components of a watch movement and I can come up with dozens of pretty unusual ideas.

A MOMENT IN TIME
How does the Los Angeles market compare to others in the country? Ten years ago, most of my pieces sold in L.A. were to people from all around the world. Interestingly now, 90 percent of the Westime sales are to people in California and the rest of the U.S. Westime is one of our top ten accounts in the world. Having said that, MB&F will have crafted only 234 pieces in 2017—still a voluntarily very restricted amount! Tell us about your relationship with Westime. Westime is one of the six worldwide retailers who, in 2005, believed enough in us—or [was] crazy enough—to pay in advance one-third of [its] first order two years before we delivered the first machine… based [only] on a drawing and a crude 3D printed piece of plastic, which was supposed to mimic the HM1. The word ‘friends’ in our name—the ‘F’ in MB&F—always had a real meaning. Without the Simonian family, owners of Westime, and five other retailers, I would not be standing in front of you today. Contrary to what happens in the corporate world, that has a real meaning for both of us.
