UMMER IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER AND BESIDES THE LONGER DAYS, WARMER WEATHER, AND HAUTE VACAtions, we have a lot to look forward to. First up are the season’s blockbuster films. Actor Josh Duhamel, who graces our cover, stars in Transformers: The Last Knight. The handsome silver fox opens up about the experience and how life has changed since he became a dad. We also sit down with local actress Connie Nielsen to discuss her role in this June’s Wonder Woman. In the film, Nielsen plays the
lead character’s mother and in real life, she plays a motherly role to many of Africa’s slum children. We’re excited for Auction Napa Valley, which is being hosted by the entire Coppola family and share a list of the top 10 female winemakers who are changing the wine world as we know it. Whether you want to get away this summer or try some new food and drink, we’ve got you covered there, too. Why not head to Hawaii, visit a Chinese emporium, or sip a rhum cocktail? Just don’t forget to toast to the good life. We’ll be doing the same. Cheers!

ENGLISH COUSINS What to know about the Jaguar F-Type SVR and Range Rover Evoque Convertible
TRUE PERFORMER The Jaguar F-Type SVR is equally at home on the track or going to a black-tie event.
Jaguar and Land Rover are storied brands, both growing up in the

of their many decades of independence, that one day they would be joined (corporately speaking) under a single owner… and that the owner bringing them together would be India’s Tata Motors? But that’s what happened in 2008, after each of the brands tried different corporate betrothals (most recently, Jaguar was part of Ford and Land Rover was part of BMW until Ford bought Land Rover, too, in 2000). Presumably, each company can leverage the engineering achievements of the other, producing even better cars than before. That said, let’s start with the fast cat: the Jaguar F-Type SVR. It has a ton of power (try 575 on for size), a top speed in excess of 200 miles per hour, and acceleration that can easily get you arrested in virtually every corner of the

planet. Who needs that kind of power, you ask? If that’s your thought process, this isn’t for you. But mea culpa, this
”
The F-Type burst onto the U.S. motoring scene in 2013 and, smartly, it was offered with a wide array of options, including motors with a big spread of power choices. It first came in convertible and, soon thereafter, coupe. Then, both were introduced with ‘R’ variants and more horsepower—500 and 550, respectively. But now Jaguar’s top performance moniker, SVR, has upped both of their power levels and top speeds. While you may have thought the F-Types were as good as it gets, the SVR moves the bar even higher. Aside from its stunning good looks and impressive performance, this car is luxurious. A killer sound system adds to the pleasure, if you can stand to interfere with the arias being created by the power plant. And it even comes in a convertible (about $3,000 more), for those who like

latter has a base price of $57,700)—all convertibles have the same fourcylinder powerplant with 240 horsepower and 250 pounds of torque coupled to a nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. There’s one metric, especially in Los Angeles, by which the Range Rover Evoque Convertible is hard to beat: stares per mile. Whether in Beverly Hills or Newport Beach, the drop top is a real head-turner. One in a code on the infotainment screen, which both locks the glove box and also turns off the sound system. Not since Corvette offered an in-car video monitoring system has a manufacturer better thwarted the efforts of Ferris Bueller’s nemeses. For a car with a base price starting at about $61,000 for the least expensive coupe, the SVR is a big jump—tipping the scales with a base price of about $126,000. Is it worth it? Get in, fire it up, and then decide. If you’re a petrolholic like some of us, just the sound upon its awakening will

valet literally moved a Rolls-Royce (one of three parked in front of the restaurant) to give the convertible center stage. When we returned to the stand after dinner, he said that he’d never seen so much interest in a car—and he regularly hosts the most exotic of models from

in the world. And while the Evoque Convertible is a fun, well-priced car, it’s also very technologically advanced. It uses a sophisticated power-and-brake management system called “Torque Vectoring by Braking,” which is especially useful off-road. There are also driver-control programs for low-friction surfaces, venturing up and down hills, and more. The infotainment system with 10-inch touchscreen is great, and the Meridian
ow let’s look at its off-road cousin, Land Rover. The company has broadened its output recently so that numerous vehicles it creates are being sold in the U.S.—the Discovery Sport is the least-expensive model, starting at about $38,000. Moving upward in the line, we find the Land Rover Discovery, Range

sound system works terrifically—ten speakers plus a subwoofer. With the four-banger engine, you will not win many Stop Light Grand Prix, but its performance is sprightly. Overall, the Evoque Convertible is a lot of fun to drive. You probably won’t want to return this baby after taking it for a test drive. Because, even if your typical daily diet includes at least 500HP, the Evoque Convertible is a surprising delight.
The Evoque drop top is a real headturner, even achieving front-row status at valet stands.
and Holland, the ultimate Range Rover Black with gorgeous leathers and tooled metalwork reminiscent of the finest shooting guns ever made (and starting at about $225,000). But back to today’s topic: the Range Rover Evoque Convertible, a bundle of joy with a base price of $52,000. Although you may have seen the Evoque before, as it hit the road a few years ago, this year’s convertible model simply adds to the already-youthful vibe with a roof that drops noticeably from front to back. This swagger for the normally sedate (and much more rectangular) Land Rover family gave the Evoque a street strut that endeared it in the hearts of youngsters and the young at heart. With two basic models—the SE and the HSE (the

HIP TO BE SQUARE Cool San Franciscans’ secret shopping mecca? Jackson Square. On the border of the Financial District and North Beach, Jackson Square is one of San Francisco’s most beautiful and underrated neighborhoods. The area is full of rich history: During the Gold Rush, Jackson Square was part of what was known as the Barbary Coast—the waterline came all the way up to Battery Street—and it housed factories, saloons, and brothels that were frequented by the sailors who came into town. Today, it’s a relaxed and quiet neighborhood that’s home to luxe boutiques, architectural firms, antique shops, and iconic restaurants. It’s the preferred shopping place for many a San Francisco swan. According to local star stylist, Mary Gonsalves Kinney, “Jackson Square is a favorite shopping destination because it’s off-the-beaten Union Square path and offers a wide variety of hard-to-find, European designers. Those that open shop around that neighborhood seem to be slightly more art-focused and avant garde.” We couldn’t agree more with Kinney. Here we highlight our must-visit Jackson Square spots. And a word to the wise: there is no physical square in Jackson Square, but instead simply chic storefronts lining charming streets. Farnaz Dadashi, a local stylist who works at Pia the Store, describes Jackson Square as “the underground place for women in the know to shop.” Judging by the people who showed up for the airy boutique’s opening last fall, Dadashi is right. Owner Pia Cohler counts Priscilla Chan Zuckerberg, Nicole Systrom, and Alison Pincus as fans as well as plenty of cool girls about town

Cohler hand picks each piece of clothing and she tries to secure items that won’t be found elsewhere in San Francisco. With white walls, high ceilings, and light streaming in from large windows, Pia’s decor is minimal, but that allows the clothes to take center stage. The beautiful collection that Cohler has put together includes sexy chiffon dresses, one-of-a-kind statement coats, cozy sweaters, and sophisticated chic basics. Downstairs shoppers can find stylish separates and pretty dresses from Alberta Ferretti, Rachel Comey, and Zimmerman while upstairs is athletic, leisure, and denim from Paco Rabanne, Raquel Allegra, and Frame. “When I have a hankering for something with a bohemian French vibe, I can venture into Pia the Store,” Kinney says of this upscale seven-month old boutique, so if that’s the sort of thing you’re on hunt for, you know where to find it. Several doors down from Pia is Theory, the contemporary American fashion label’s newly opened, second stand-alone boutique in San Francisco. Theory is a luxe lifestyle fashion label designed by Lisa Kulson that specializes in timeless basics. Simple, but expertly cut blazers, chunky knits, slouchy track pants, silk dresses, and Looks from Theory’s latest collection
work shirts fill the racks at the bright and airy boutique. With white walls, light wooden floors, high ceilings, and exposed beams, the space reflects the minimalist chic look of Theory’s classic aesthetic. One of the things that makes Jackson Square special is its close proximity to the TransAmerica tower. Look up any which way, and the city’s most iconic skyscraper reaches up to the sky. If you happen to be on Sansome taking in the majestic beauty of the building, you may notice a colorful Rubik’s Cube mural. This means you’re around the corner from Jake, a decadent haute couture design house. Thanks to a stint on Project Runway, Jake Wall is one of San Francisco’s most well known original designers. With Jake, his namesake fashion brand, he brings to life polished dresses and impeccable suiting for stylish men and women who aren’t afraid to make a statement. Walk into the large boutique and it feels like you’ve been transported to a sumptuous European salon. There is white marble, tufted leather couches, and racks filled with Jake’s provocative and thoughtful creations. Although it’s decorated in cool colors, there is nothing cold about Jake. His two greyhounds greet shoppers with a gentle nuzzle and sketches of upcoming projects are taped to the mirrors giv-

much more. The store is an all-encompassing selection of everything one needs to enjoy the great outdoors. Guideboat was launched by Stephen Gordon, the original founder of Restoration Hardware, as a retail boating business. A guideboat is a lightweight wooden row boat that was used in the 1800s to guide fishermen and hunters in the Adirondacks. Gordon’s vintage 1892 guideboat inspired him to launch the appearal and sporting goods brand, which also sells sleek, fast modern replicas. The California-made boats are solid American cherry with hand-laid hulls and a shiny midnight blue finish, waxed to perfection. These are the most gorgeous row boats you’ll ever see. They weigh only 89 lbs, so they are easy to transport from a car’s rooftop to a river. Other items Guideboat sells? All the goodies you need for a perfect day on the lake: sailing shells, seafarer boots, pocket compasses, and aviator sunglasses. Plus, plenty of fun gifts like hurricane lanterns, pressurized growlers that will keep 128 ounces of beer cold for weeks, Estwing sportsman’s hatchet with laminated leather grip, and books like John Muir Wilderness Essays and the Morrow Guide to Knots. Prefer biking to boating? Walk down Hotaling Street, a one-block alley, and you’ll come to Shinola, a Detroitbased bicycle manufacturer and leather goods producer. The beautiful bikes have a nostalgic quality to them and come in a variety of styles and colors. We love the Runwell, an 11-speed bike inspired by the French Porteur bicycles once used by newspaper couriers on the streets of Paris. The store is housed in a landmarked building, the Belli, which was originally built during the Gold Rush—it has a lovely center courtyard patio that often is a hub for local maker collaborations. Since opening, Shinola has partnered with many brands from Jessica Silverman to Mr. Holmes Bakehouse to host special events and sales. Shinola shares the retail space with Filson, a Pacific Northwest retailer established in 1897. Filson makes men’s and women’s outdoor gear, luggage, and bags. LONG LIVE CHINA LIVE
After three years of research, planning, and development, George Chen’s massive new Chinatown complex is finally open There are many places to order dumplings in Chinatown, but there is only one place where they are made with fresh, seasonal, sustainably sourced ingredients and cooked in custom-made cast iron skillets—and that place happens to be the city’s hautest new eatery, China Live. The sensational new project is more culinary experience than traditional restaurant. It’s a 30,000-square-foot space, designed by AvroKO, complete with tea lounge, bar, restaurant, and retail marketplace. From longtime industry vet, George Chen, China Live presents Chinese food in a whole new light. There is nothing greasy or fatty about the cuisine that is being produced in multiple open kitchens. Instead it’s a dizzying array of wildly flavorful, satisfying, and comforting dishes that are downright delicious. Roast pork buns are like pillow-soft muffins filled with succulent ground pork in a sweet red sauce. Celtuse, a refreshing and crisp type of Chinese lettuce, is served cold and tossed with salty bait shrimp and extra virgin tea oil. Manila clams are wok-cooked and coated in a fiery chili and Thai basil sauce. The menu changes daily depending on what Chen and his chefs find at local Chinese markets. There are four kitchens, each with a specific focus—barbecue and grilling, wok

Residences in Sunnyvale, for instance, are selling for $200,000 to $400,000 over listed prices. Iverson says, “With global uncertainty rising, the mid-Peninsula continues to be seen as a safe haven for investment, and we continue to see buyers coming from all over the U.S. and the globe to put money into local real estate.” Real estate agents in the Bay Area attribute the soaring prices to

Walk off the plane and it’s almost as if you’ve stepped back in time to a place where sipping mai tais while watching the sunset is more important than answering emails. There is no rush and as you’re transported to the Montage Kapalua Bay—your home away from home for the next week— you can’t help but feel instantly relaxed. The landscape is stunning: the pristine sapphire waters of the Pacific Ocean glitter in the sunlight, ancient volcanic mountains, flush with vibrant greenery, loom ominously in the background, and there is not a cloud in the sky. It’s no wonder that savvy San Franciscans have been flocking to the tropical destination in droves. It’s the perfect place for a stress-free and low-key vacation—and with California being three hours ahead of local time, it will be your most productive getaway ever. On the agenda? Morning walk, yoga, ocean swim, read poolside lunch, snorkel, spa, sunset cocktails at the beach bar, dinner, sleep, repeat.

Haute TRAVEL While you could cook up a feast in your residence’s kitchen, the Montage has a number of delicious dining options. Breakfast at Cane & Canoe, the hotel’s openair restaurant is a must. Chef David Viviano specializes in classic Hawaiian fare with Asian influences. For a hearty start to the day, consider the loco moco, an island specialty that consists of a Kobe beef burger patty, fried egg, white rice, local mushrooms, and brown gravy. Chef also makes sensational huevos rancheros and innovative breakfast specials like panzanella with poached eggs and mozzarella cheese, and an egg sandwich on housemade brioche with pesto aioli. The oceanview bar serves up satisfying salads, nachos with a creamy chipotle cheddar sauce, and excellent fish tacos with citrus cabbage slaw and blackened fresh-caught flaky white fish. For a memorable meal just a stone’s throw from the resort, head to Merriman’s for dinner. The restaurant was opened in 2009 by Peter Merriman, a chef who was instrumental in pioneering regional Hawaiian cuisine. Before Merriman came along, most restaurants served imported foods and ingredients, but

EXPLORE While you can tour pineapple farms and scour the seas for whales, the best way to enjoy the island is to simply explore the beaches with a towel, good book, snorkel goggles, and fins. If a week of doing nothing terrifies you, consider spending a day driving the road to Hana. It’s an extraordinary 64mile stretch of highway that extends along the eastern coast of Maui. Rent a flashy 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster convertible from Maui Roadsters and race around the twists and turns of the memorable road. FOR SOME YOUNG ACTORS, A BIG BREAK IS WORTHY OF A HANDSOME PRIZE. A PRIVATE JET, COLORFUL SPORTS car, or house in the hills are not uncommon purchases among the newly rich and famous. However, that wasn’t the case for one of Hollywood’s most dashing gentlemen. When actor Josh Duhamel made it big, the first thing he splurged on was an old hunting cabin in the middle of nowhere. “I bought this property literally out in the woods. I bought 27 acres for like, nothing,” he reminisces. “I couldn’t believe that I got it for that [price]. It had just an old hunting cabin on it, no electricity, no toilet—just an outhouse and place to sleep. But I loved it because it felt… so primal. There [are] no amenities. You chop your wood, you clean your dishes in the lake. You want to take a bath? You go jump in the lake.” It’s his incredible ability to be down to earth, to be another one of the guys, that makes Duhamel wildly likable and relatable to both sexes. Sure, it’s hard not to be taken by his smoldering brown eyes, mischievous megawatt smile and 6’3” frame, but spend a couple of minutes with him and you can’t help but feel like he’s a fun-loving older brother, quick to play a prank or provide a hug—whichever is necessary. Whether or not giant robots are there, you’re mostly just worried about catching brass in the face from the guy next to you… Michael surrounds us with real military guys and makes these battle scenes feel as real as possible.” Actors rarely receive accolades for fighting mechanical aliens in summer blockbusters, but participating in a film series like Transformers has its perks. “To be a part of something like this is really helpful because… it gives you a lot more exposure internationally,” Duhamel explains. “It is important, in some ways, to be a part of a franchise because it gives you enough credibility, I guess, to go and make smaller movies. Which is what I really love to do.”
FRIENDS, FILMS AND FATHERHOOD
One passion project he’s been working on for the past two years is about to come to fruition. The Buddy Games is a film that Duhamel wrote with friend and television director, Jude Weng. It has been given the green light, with shooting scheduled to start this summer and Duhamel both directing and starring in the production. The film is “a dude comedy helicopters flying all over the place, you’ve got bombs going off, you’ve got this Porsche Carrera with a big crane on top of it with a camera. You’ve just got so much going on that everybody needs to be on top of their shit… There’s just something addictive about the energy on a set like this.” With these films, Bay is known for recreating authentic-looking battles between humans and oversized machines.
that really speaks to brotherhood, fellowship and friendship, and how important it is—especially as you get older.” It’s partly based on his own life. Every year, he gets together with long-time friends for a bro-mantic weekend of gaming. It’s a great way for Duhamel to reconnect with them and allow his competitive side to shine. “We go for a weekend and compete in all these different events, from paintball to go-kart racing to ping pong to golf.”
I AM A PRETTY PRIVATE GUY AND I LIKE TO KEEP IT THAT WAY. I JUST TRY TO [PARTICIPATE IN SOCIAL MEDIA] AS RESPONSIBLY AS I CAN, SO I DON’T FEEL LIKE I’M SELLING MY SOUL EVERY TIME I POST SOMETHING. For the filming, which was shot in London, Duhamel had to be in im-

For a glimpse of what The Buddy Games may consist of, one need not look any further than Duhamel’s public Instagram account. There he is with a buddy holding a giant fish he’s just caught. There he is with a buddy in a fur-lined snow cap at a Minnesota Vikings football game. There he is with a buddy on a Scottish golf course. There he is with buddies drinking red wine on a beach at sunset. In fact, you can learn a lot about the actor just by browsing. As a son, older brother, husband and dad, you can tell he’s also a true family man. Further, Duhamel is not afraid to dress up in costume or poke fun at himself. He’s not lacking confidence, as evidenced by his many candid selfies and videos in which he’s communicating directly with fans. The actor has 1.7 million followers—enough for the studios to take notice. “I have sort of a love/hate relationship with social media. I’m constantly struggling with what to post and what not to post because I am a pretty private guy and I like to keep it that way. But at the same time… the studios place a lot of value on that and it helps you to get jobs. I just try to do it as responsibly and un-invasively as I can, so I don’t feel like I’m selling my soul every time I post something.” Selling his soul for entertainment’s sake, though, is something Duhamel is familiar with portraying. In the current dark drama, This is Your Death, he plays the host of a Bachelor-type reality series. On the big reveal episode, the woman who doesn’t get picked shoots the millionaire bachelor—and herself. The entire traumatizing event is aired on live television and everyone, including Duhamel’s character, is shocked to see ratings go through the roof. “He thinks he’s gonna get fired [but the producers and networks] actually have this idea to do the show where people go on TV and off themselves. And he’s like, ‘Are you kidding me? This is the worst idea I’ve ever heard, I’m not doing it, this is ridiculous, this is what I hate about what I do.’ Then he starts to think about it, and he’s like, ‘Wait, I can do this and tell

it in my own way where it actually does people good. If it does something [that] makes people appreciate life, rather [than be] about death, it’s about life.’” But throughout the course of the film, the character experiences a transformation. “He sort of goes from the hero to the anti-hero in this movie. That’s really what I loved about it— it’s sort of the opposite of what you typically see. It’s shocking—the movie’s shocking. People are gonna love it or hate it. But it definitely leaves an

They’re telling the story as real, as realistically, as it should be told.” A limited series is the only type of television Duhamel says he would do at this point, as he’s not ready to commit to something that could possibly last several years. “I love what TV’s doing right now. I think it really is incredible and there’s so much great stuff out there that I just want to be patient and find something that I really respond to… It’s a little scary knowing that [a project] could go ten years, which would be great, but it’s also tough. I have so much other stuff that I really want to get done.” He’s also just wrapped Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda alongside Jennifer Garner and Nick Robinson, who portrays his son struggling to come out of the closet. “I’m playing the father of a 17-year-old kid, which I didn’t think was possible. And then I realized I was 44 and it’s totally possible,” he laughs—burly and genuine. “That was a bit of shock to the ego, knowing that I could have a son that old, but it’s been really fun. What I really loved about the script was that, normally, stories like this are heavy-handed and they take [the subject matter] very seriously, but this is more of a comedy than anything… It’s beautiful and it’s impor-

SHOOTING FOR A HOLE IN ONE
Although his family is deeply rooted in Los Angeles now, when Duhamel first moved to California, he lived in the Bay Area—more specifically, in and around San Francisco. “I lived [there] for about a year and love it. It’s like my favorite city in the country, it truly is. I just love the architecture. I love the culture, I love the food, I love the beauty… I would live there [again] if I could.” He does make an annual pilgrimage to Northern California each spring for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a professional golf tournament on the PGA tour where golfers are paired up with celebrity amateurs. “It’s a real honor to get that invite every year. It’s like Christmas. You get this leather-bound invite, inviting you back, and I’m like, ‘Yes, I’m going back another year!’ Cypress Point and Pebble Beach and Spy Glass at Monterey, they’re just such amazing golf courses.” He adds, “I’ve played a lot of golf courses around the world and there’s no better golf than out there. Those waves crashing against the rocks, overlooking the 18th hole at Pebble Beach, or just all the cypress trees, they’re so haunting and beautiful—I love it. I just look forward to it every year.” Another bonus is donating the earnings to charity if he wins. And, although Duhamel has yet to make the leaderboard, he supports several
important
causes.
He
recently did a PSA for WildAid, the nonprofit that’s attempting to stop the trade, trafficking and poaching of wild animals. “I try to look at it from the point of view of like, say you’re an alien coming, say you go to a different planet and you find all these amazing creatures there and you look at, what, a giraffe or a tiger or a monkey. You know, there’s so many amazing creatures on this planet and they’re so specific to just here that we forget how precious they are and, I don’t know, as an animal lover and a lover of our planet, I just feel like, if I can help bring some awareness to it, I’m gonna do it.” It’s safe to assume that Duhamel doesn’t do any hunting when he’s at his little cabin in the woods, which he describes as his happy place. Instead, he’s cleaning up the property, swimming in the nearby lake, spending time with his father, and eventually plans to take his son. “It’s very simple, but it is so peaceful and serene and beautiful and quiet. Just so quiet and beautiful, I love it. It calms my mind.” He recalls a favorite memory there: “It was early in the spring and the water was still cold, but it was a beautiful day and it was hot out. I had this dock in the water—I was like, ‘I’m jumping in!’ I’d had the place for about a year and hadn’t got in water yet. But we’d just put this new dock in, so I stripped down to my underwear, and I was like, ‘Whoo whoo whoo!’ and my dad was like, ‘Be a brave soul!’ I was like, ‘Yeah, be a brave soul.’ That’s stuck with me ever since and I think of it often. ‘Be a brave soul.’” Those four words have clearly become his philosophy in life—and we can see they’re

MEET THE WOMEN BEHIND SAN FRANCISCO’S HOTTEST RESTAURANT EMPIRE BY KATIE SWEENEY
Jennifer Puccio, and Emily Luchetti. However, if you dine out in San Francisco, you’ve definitely been to one of their restaurants. The trio is behind several of the city’s most popular eateries: Marlowe, Park Tavern, The Cavalier, Marianne’s, Leo’s Oyster Bar, and coming later this spring, Petit Marlowe. In only seven short years, Weinberg, Puccio, and Luchetti have positioned themselves as one of the Bay Area restaurant industry’s most powerful empire builders. Just as each of their restaurants has a distinct personality, so do the women. Weinberg, a New Zealand native and the co-owner and managing partner, is the life of the party—a fast-talking, infectiously energetic, slightly mischievous front of the house force. Puccio, originally from the East Coast and executive chef, is thoughtful, reserved, and creative—an inspiring back-of-house leader. Luchetti, a national pastry legend and CPO, Chief Pastry Officer, is the sage dessert whisperer—a quiet, wise, and supportive sprite whose purse is always filled with a bag of delicious treats. All three women are blonde and whip-smart. Together, along with James Nicholas, the managing partner who oversees finances, the trio make up the Big Night Restaurant Group.

Walk into any of Big Night’s ventures and you can’t help but notice a buzz in the air, as if the restaurant itself is alive and you’ve stepped into the most exciting party in San Francisco. That’s not by accident; Weinberg is meticulous in crafting the ideal restaurant atmosphere. “The first thing I say when we hire a host is ‘Your job is to make sure when somebody walks in the door they feel like they’ve arrived at the best party in town’,” Wein-

Perfectly crisp fries are served alongside the Marlowe burger making it sheer cheeseburger bliss. Puccio’s other signature dishes include Park Tavern’s smoked deviled eggs with bacon, pickled jalepeño, and chives (hands down, no questions asked: the best deviled eggs in San Francisco); Marlowe’s crispy Brussels sprout chips—delectable lightly fried Brussels sprout leaves with lemon and sea salt; and The Cavalier’s hen egg

lack of females making their way through the ranks in San Francisco. “I would love to have more women in the kitchen,” Weinberg says. “They’re just not coming through.” Luchetti confirms, “They’re not. Marlowe, due later this spring. They have gutted star sommelier Mark Bright’s old wine bar Les Clos, and will turn it into a French bistro and oysterette. “Petit Marlowe is a return to the original philosophy of the first Marlowe, which was much smaller,” Weinberg explains. There is no gas range in the kitchen, so Puccio is getting creative with a steamer, convection oven, and a couple of tabletop burners. There will be raclette, beautiful salads, composed raw bar plates, a cheese program, and artisanal charcuterie. The team, along with Big Night’s creative director Jake Mogelson, took a weeklong trip to Paris to scour the wine bars for food inspiration and flea markets for vintage decor items. Do they have plans to open more eateries after Petit Marlowe? They can’t say—it all depends on if Weinberg finds a space that speaks to her. “I’m never looking. What will happen is I’ll see a space and I’ll think, ‘Oh god.’ I always have three or four concepts kind of marinat-

While no space has caught her eye yet, they are thinking of expanding to Los Angeles. “We would love to do a Leo’s Oyster Bar somewhere else. That’s certainly not a secret,” Weinberg says. “It doesn’t feel city-specific and what I love about Leo’s is it feels like a special occasion restaurant every night. People are there to celebrate, people are dressed really well there, and I just feel like a special-occasion restaurant always translates. So we might want to do a Leo’s at a hotel in Los Angeles.” The wheels are constantly turning and one thing is for certain: Big Night shows no signs of slowing down. There are more great things to come and San Franciscans are along for the wild ride. “We seemed to have found a pace that actually works for us. Everybody

AUCTION! Lights, Camera,
THE COPPOLA FAMILY GEARS UP TO HOST WINE COUNTRY’S 37TH ANNUAL EXTRAVAGANZA BY KATIE SWEENEY
This June, a little bit of old Hollywood glamour is coming to the Napa Valley. The Coppolas—Francis, Eleanor, Sofia, Roman, and Gia—whose ties run deep in both the wine and movie industries, are honorary chairs for the Valley’s biggest annual fundraiser, Auction Napa Valley (ANV). Although oenophiles will travel from around the world to bid on the 350 or so lots, at its heart, ANV is a celebration of, and for, the folks who call the Napa Valley home. Since its inaugural event in 1981, the Napa Valley Vintners, the trade association that puts on the auction, has raised $170 million for the local community making it the most significant wine charity event in the country. “The proceeds from Auction Napa Valley benefit our community in meaningful ways in the areas of children’s education and

Ciccio will serve dishes that pair with rosé and other aromatic white wines, Morimoto will serve food that pairs with Sauvignon Blanc, Basswood will pair with Chardonnay, Mustard’s Grill with Pinot Noir, Angéle with Merlot, and Galpão Gaucho with Cabernet Sauvignon. “It's going to be more copious food, and it's a bigger undertaking for each one of those particular six restaurants, but it's going to be so much more focused,” Melka says. “The food and the wine pairing is going to be really refined which is what the Valley's really all about, rather than just little noshes.” A BREAKDOWN OF THE AUCTIONS Besides the food, the four-day event does, in fact, focus on wine, specifically tasting it and buying it. Many lots feature some sort of wining and dining experience with take-home items like engraved oversized bottles or cases of wine. lasts for a week, is the ideal place for wine lovers who can’t make it to Napa for the auction to bid on the festive and opulent experiences. The second auction component is the Barrel Auction, for registered ANV guests, which takes place on Friday at Inglenook Winery and features 108 barrel lots. The barrels hold wines that are not yet finished, but have one year left to mature. The vintners start pouring at 11 a.m. and the bids close at 4 p.m. When an event-goer tastes a wine that they absolutely love, they can bid on a case from that specific barrel. Each barrel holds ten cases, so the top 10 bidders from each lot will get a case of that wine when it’s finally bottled. “The Barrel Auction tends to have a really good vibe because people love to taste at a barrel. It's a lot more fun. The ambience is fantastic,” Melka says enthusiastically. “Vintners are siphoning wine out of their barrels, they are dipping in their pipettes, people are milling around with crazy purple teeth because they're tasting wines that are not finished wines. Everything is electronic and there's a big board and you can put in bids up until the very last minute. So everybody knows who won at the end of the day, which is great.” Last year one of Melka’s barrels was the top bid with the 10-case lot going for $101,000. This June, Melka’s barrel is a 2015 Metisse Martinez Vineyard. It’s the first time they’ve produced a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Pritchard Hill vineyard and Melka is hopeful that it will be one of the top sells. It’s a uniquely crafted blend of Cabernet Sauvignon,

Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot that Melka says “is going to be something really different for everybody to taste.” The third and final auction is Saturday’s main event, the grand Live Auction at Meadowood Napa Valley. The after-

in Northern California MEET THE LADIES WHO ARE CHANGING THE WINE INDUSTRY ONE BOTTLE AT A TIME BY KATIE SWEENEY
IN 1886, JOSEPHINE TYCHSON BECAME THE FIRST WOMAN TO OWN AND OPERATE A WINERY IN NAPA VALLEY. The sudden death of her husband forced Tychson to take up the farming and winemaking herself. For eight years she ran Tychson Cellars producing 30,000 gallons of Zinfandel, Riesling, and Burgundy. Today she is recognized by Freemark Abbey, the winery that currently sits in the spot where Tychson Cellars once was, as a female pioneer. It is her can-do spirit that can be seen in the ten female winemakers listed, in alphabetical order, here. Like Tychson, these ladies are paving the way for new generations while making names for themselves in what is predominantly a male-driven industry. We raise a glass to these women, and if you come across a bottle of their wines, we advise you to do the same.

WOMEN WINEMAKERS
Anne Moller-Racke DONUM ESTATE
Known to some as the ‘Princess of Pinot’ Anne Moller-Racke’s title at Donum Estate is president and winegrower. The German native believes that farming the grapes is the most important aspect of winemaking—think of her more as a plant whisper than traditional winemaker. “Wine growing is a slow process that requires patience, forcing people to commit to a place,” she says. “There is no fast forward, we harvest only once a year.” Moller-Racke has been in the Sonoma wine industry for 36 years and she founded Donum in 2001. The beautiful ranchstyle estate sits on 187 acres of rolling Carneros hillside and is home to an incredible sculpture garden. Book a tasting with Donum and you’ll not only learn about how the Pinot Noir grapes are grown, but about the sculptures that dot the property, from Carl Fredrik Reuterwärd’s Non-Violence to Ai WeiWei’s Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads. Plus, you’ll be blown away by Moller-Racke’s infectious natural happiness and pure positivity. “I do see the glass half full. It is rewarding to add to quality of life. Winemaking makes you slow down, start a conversation,

“I love the story of the vintage, the weather. Having farmed these vineyards for over 30 years gives me a wonderful perspective. I remember each year clearly and what made that year unique.” — Anne Moller-Racke
Cathy Corison CORISON WINERY
Cathy Corison has never been afraid of standing up for herself in a male-driven environment. During college in the early 70s, Corison was on the men’s diving team because the school, Pomona College, didn’t have a women’s team. When she was getting her Master’s degree in enology at UC Davis, Corison’s professor told her she’d never get a job in Napa because she was a woman. However, she persevered and headed to wine country where she worked her way up the ranks at Freemark Abbey. In 1987, she founded her namesake winery in a barn, built by her husband, in St. Helena. She makes only Cabernet Sauvignon and Gewürztraminer and today she is known for being one of the best Cab producers in the Valley. Her motto is “integrity is the only thing any of us have to sell” and the achievement she’s most proud of ? “The 30 vintages of Corison Napa Valley Cabernet that are in the barn!”
“Wine is alive! It is the happy result of a series of living systems conspiring to create the magical alchemy in our glass. Winegrowing keeps me plugged into the earth.” — Cathy Corison

Eileen Crane DOMAINE CARNEROS
In 1987, a little Champagne house named Tattinger tapped Eileen Crane to build Domaine Carneros from the ground up. Having helped establish nearby Gloria Ferrer Caves and Vineyards in 1984, Crane was up to the task and then some. Fast forward 30 years and Crane is the most experienced and respected sparkling winemaker in the United States. Her Blanc de Blancs cuvée, Le Rêve, is often recognized worldwide as America’s finest sparkler—and this is the achievement Crane is most

proud of. “Years ago, when Champagne Taittinger asked me to create a Blanc de Blancs, I was petrified. I had very little experience with this style of all Chardonnay sparkling,” she says. “Our first was released in 1998 and it immediately ascended to the top of the charts. I hoped for this, but could not really imagine it happening.” Her favorite time to drink Le Rêve? Around the holidays. The rest of the year dictates her drinking choices. “Brut Vintage becomes my favorite about October. In January and February our Pinot Noirs taste especially good. And April 1 inspires me to re-up with our luscious Rosé Sparkling. I drink the Rosé all summer long unless I have oysters, in which case I always have the Ultra Brut.”
Geneviève Janssens ROBERT MONDAVI WINERY
88
SF_Haute 10 Winemakers_5_4_KS.indd 88
Geneviève Janssens was practically destined to become a winemaker. She grew up in France among her father’s vineyards and studied enology at the University of Bordeaux under some of France’s most legendary viticulturists. It’s no surprise then, that when she came to Napa in 1978, she went to work with the region’s top producer at the time, Robert Mondavi, whose winemaking style was reminiscent of her father’s. She carries on both of their legacies by “mentoring the next generation of winemakers and creating food-worthy wines that authentically reflect grape and place.” What does she love most about the winemaking community in the Valley? That it’s rich in innovation and creativity: “There is great diversity in winemaking and a spirit of collaboration and sharing between wineries that is very refreshing. With over 400 wineries, there are many ideas and viewpoints, which makes this a fertile place for winemakers. We also have wonderful diversity of terroir and grape varieties. The soil and climate means we’re always in a state of discovery – there are over 300 soil variations alone.”

“Walking in the To Kalon Vineyard, watching the grapes develop and tasting them along the way until they reach optimum maturity and ripeness—that’s what I love most about winemaking. I also enjoy creating and crafting wines with a great team.” — Geneviève Janssens

Kathryn Hall HALL WINES AND WALT WINES
Kathryn Hall has been in the wine business since the 1970s. She first started producing Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon at Walt (which is her maiden name) Wines in the early 80s. Having assisted the city attorney in Berkeley, California, presided over an inner city development company in Dallas, and served as the United States Ambassador to Austria, she’s lived an incredibly colorful life. However, Hall has always felt most at home in the vineyard and in 2003, along with her husband, Craig, she opened Hall Wines. One of the things Hall is most proud of is “being able, over the past 17 years, to grow both the number of wines we make and the quality of our wines. So often larger total production is associated with lower quality. I am proud we have been able to grow both,” she says acknowledging that “makers of great wine need to guard against cutting corners— increasing production in the vineyard or using stabilizing processes in winemaking that increase predictability but diminish subtleties and layering of flavors.” Luckily, through Hall’s guidance, neither of her brands have faced this disappointing predicament.
“There is so much I love about the world of wine—the interplay between nature and human creativity, the idea of being able to add joy to people’s lives, the happy people who attend our wineries or wine dinners.” — Kathryn Hall
Katie Carter WATTLE CREEK AND LYETH
Katie Carter is one of the wine industry’s most up-and-coming young winemakers. Spend just two seconds with the bubbly blonde and you can’t help but feel her enthusiasm for her profession, in particular the science behind winemaking. Eleven years after graduating from college—she studied integrative biology at UC Berkeley—Carter was named winemaker at two of the Boisset Collection’s Sonoma-based wineries, Wattle Creek and Lyeth. Although she didn’t study enology, PHOTOS COURTESY OF DOMAINE CARNEROS, HALL WINES, ROBERT MONDAVI WINERY, AND THE BOISSET COLLECTION
she was easily capable of translating her biology background to winemaking. When asked what she loves most about winemaking, her answer is long-winded, but passionate. “We are but stewards of the microbiological environment, ensuring the most optimal conditions for activity. The blend of science, hard labor, and ultimately sensory judgment is captivating and always a unique challenge. Plus, crafting a tangible product for enhancing one’s pleasure of living is awesome!”
“There is a dynamic balance of considerations from vine to bottle, which I love coordinating. The microbiological community actually doing the work ( fermentation!) is fascinating to me, and is never the same.” — Katie Carter 89

Margo Van Staaveren CHATEAU ST. JEAN Margo Van Staaveren has been working the same vines at Chateau St. Jean for the past 37 years; along the way she has played a pivotal role in every aspect of the winemaking process. Van Staaveren is known for being a master blender. She creates signature blends that remain similar from vintage to vintage, but at the same time capture the uniqueness of that particular growing year. Her favorite aspect of being a winemaker is the ritual of it all. “I love the cycle of winemaking. One cycle is the planning of a vineyard through to planting it, watching it develop and finally, making the wine from the vineyard,” she explains. “The other cycle is annual. From

bud break all the way through to harvest, we watch the evolution of the season. Tasting the grapes, making the pick decision and making the wine never ceases to amaze me. Finally, getting to open a bottle for friends and family that I’ve had a part in making is thoroughly enjoyable!” Another of Van Staaveren’s talents? The ability to make a wide variety of wines, from everyday to special occasion bottles to cellar varietals.
Pauline Lhote CHANDON
How many California-based sparkling wine makers can say that they grew up in Champagne, France? We’re guessing just one and that is Chandon’s Pauline Lhote. She always worked at Moët & Chandon and Nicolas Feuillatte before setting her sights on Chandon. In 2006, she signed up for a three-month contract to work at the Yountville sparkling wine house. However she never left, and today she oversees the production of the brand’s bubbly. “It is a job that never gets old as it is never the same, there is no routine,” she says. “The process is so diverse—from walking the vineyard, to harvest, to tasting the wine throughout the entire winemaking process as it evolves, to bottling and finally being able to talk about it! Obviously, what I love most about it is the finished product itself and being able to share it with friends and family.”
“The wine industry is a very small world, where everyone knows each other, but the sense of community here in Napa is so great. We are not making wine to compete with each other, but to share with one another.” — Pauline Lhote

Shauna Rosenblum ROCK WALL WINE COMPANY
What we love most about Shauna Rosenblum is her remark-
“Wine is a pleasure that we think everyone should have access to. Our Wine Club has over 4000 members, and I will continue to make the best wine possible, to make these fabulous people happy.” — Shauna Rosenblum
able ability to do things her own way. Her winemaking style is all-inclusive, her tasting room is housed in an old military base in Alameda, and her motto is “never underestimate the value of a little fun.” This she learned from her father, Kent Rosenblum, a wildly successful winemaker in his own right. Rosenblum purposely didn’t use the family name for her winemaking endeavor and set out to do everything on her own. During her first harvest, she crushed 60 tons of grapes all by herself. In the 2016 harvest, the team crushed 627 tons, illustrating just how popular her wine brand has become. “Our goal is premium wine without the pretense,” she says. “When we started making wine at Rock Wall 10 years ago, we would go to these wine events in San Francisco and think, ‘How can a room full of alcohol be so boring??’ We wanted to fun things up, while making the most ultra-premium wine from the best grapes around Northern California. We believe in inclusivity, and the East Bay is the proper melting pot for who we want our audience to be.”
Stacy Clark CHARLES KRUG WINERY
Stacy Clark has some big shoes to fill. As the winemaker for Charles Krug Winery she oversees the production of the brand’s rich red varietals and lush lovely whites. She’s also in charge of tasting the library of vintages that date back to 1966 to determine which bottles are ready to be shipped to special club members. On top of this, she’s working under one of Napa’s most illustrious PHOTOS COURTESY OF CHATEAU ST. JEAN, MIKE ROSATI, CHARLES KRUG WINERY, AND CHANDON
wine dynasties: the Mondavis—but she loves it all. “I am proud to participate in the Charles Krug/Peter Mondavi Family winemaking legacy—it’s a great team here, there’s tremendous potential, and I look forward to coming to work every day. One of the things that I love about making wine for Charles Krug is the opportunity to experiment while creating our reserve wines. Each of these small-lot wines represents a recognition of something unique or maybe special from our vineyards.” She sees her biggest challenge as optimizing the growing season and harvest—but as she proved in the difficult 2011 vintage, Clark is capable of handling the weather, and in that year made some very interesting wines with weight and palate structure that are worth checking out.
“Winemaking is an old science, but the vineyards, marketplace, and the growing and harvest conditions are constantly changing, so there is always a vibrancy and a tension. You’re always learning something.” — Stacy Clark 91

MICHELIN MASTER Owner and chef of Manresa, David Kinch, chats about his restaurant’s longevity This summer, Manresa, David Kinch’s Michelin three-star restaurant in Los Gatos, will celebrate its 15th birthday. Since opening in 2002, Kinch has navigated plenty of ups and downs including a crippling fire that shut the restaurant down for six months in 2014. However, since then, Manresa has become better than ever, earning that third Michelin star in 2015 and serving 60 guests per night—and for every four diners, there is one dedicated server to ensure that the experience is top quality. Two master sommeliers work the floor and guests are contacted in advance to ensure that the menu is completely personalized to suit each person’s specific dietary needs. The menu changes constantly, but it always features super seasonal, local produce in refined and innovative dishes. On the eve of Manresa’s crystal anniversary, we sit down with Kinch to discuss the current state of fine dining in the Bay Area. How has the context of fine dining changed since you opened Manresa 15 years ago? Fine dining has become much more democratized. More people have
