Worth Avenue in 1923, Kassatly’s, still sells the finest of imported and domestic linens, designer lingerie, men and women’s sweaters and specialty menswear, acting as a pinnacle of the shopping district’s history. Another Palm Beach flagship on the Avenue is Stubbs & Wootton, a locally based footwear company founded by Percy Steinhart that has become an emblem of elegant Palm Beach style. The brand has gained global recognition since its launch in 1993 for its bespoke and ready-to-wear luxury slippers that are worn by everyone from townies strolling the streets to A-list celebrities posing for paparazzi. Worth Avenue also has a major artistic flair that manifests through the variety of specialty jewelry, antique and art retailers that line its sidewalks. If you’re looking for the glitz and glam of high-end bling, you can find the best of the best at venues like Cartier, Neiman Marcus and Van Cleef & Arpels, or shop for a tricked-out timepiece at Worth Avenue’s prestigious Hublot boutique. o u nd S MIAMI’S Emilio Estefan is so approachable, friendly and disarming that it’s easy to forget that he is an international music hitmaker, movie producer, Broadway sensation, author, restaurateur, hotelier and 19-time Grammy

winner. Over the course of his legendary music career,

he has guided Gloria Estefan, Jon Secada, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Ricky Martin to superstardom. Estefan has been involved with iconic

movies like Top Gun (with the song “Hot Summer

Nights”), Evita, The Birdcage, Three Men and a Baby

and Miami Vice. Most recently, he produced the film A Change of Heart, starring Jim Belushi, Virginia Madsen and Gloria, which was directed by Kenny Ortega. And his and Gloria’s autobiographical Broadway show, On Your Feet!, is smashing records in New York. Since the Cuban-born Estefan runs his multifaceted empire from

Miami, On Your Feet! will debut its national tour at the Adrienne Arsht Center from October 5-15. You’ll often find him hanging out at Estefan Kitchen, the eponymous Cuban restaurant he and Gloria just opened in the Design District. And despite all of this fame and fortune (he and Gloria are worth an estimated $600 million) he’s always working and striving to break more barriers for Latinos. One gets the sense that he’s relishing the achievements of his two children, filmmaker Nayib, who has blessed him with a grandson, and Emily, who is topping the charts with her innate musical talent and social-media leverage.

have to change who you are to be successful. Why is Miami so important to you? Miami is home. I left Cuba because it was a communist country. I came to Miami and have watched the city develop and grow. Since the beginning, people in Miami have been extremely nice to us. We used to play weddings and bar mitzvahs. Miami is part of my big family, and I’m proud to be part of Miami’s history. You are a grandfather now. What’s that like? That’s a blessing. That kid is so funny. He speaks Italian, French, English and Spanish. And when I speak to him in Spanish, he says “Abuelo, you’re talking to me in Cuban.” Having a grandson, you start seeing life in a differPhotos: Courtesy of Jesus Cordero Sr. (white) and Estefan Enterprises (cast shots)

ent way. You know that time is running out, so you really want to share life with him and the rest of the people that you love in a positive way, with a lot of love. It’s a great feeling to be alive. What is a secret to your success? The secret is to be surrounded by qualified people who take the same pride that you do. We have almost 2,000 employees, some of who have been with us for 35 years. I’ve been very lucky to have great people around me. Which charities do you support? The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis is one of our favorites. It has been 27 years since Gloria had her accident, and they told me she would never walk again. We were so blessed that she was able to have her life, to be able to walk, to be able to have another child. The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis does such a great job. We know how difficult it is. I remember the first night Gloria dressed herself and brushed her teeth, and it was a celebration! We take life for granted. I wish people would enjoy life more. There would be less hate and

negativity. That’s the secret in my life: I’m always happy and positive. I always try to make the best that I can. After 39 years of marriage, how do you keep your romance fresh with Gloria? When you get married, you should get married for the right reason—because you feel that power. And in time the love gets bigger, especially when you have kids and

grandkids. I’ve been blessed to marry the woman that I love. We have a beautiful marriage with a lot of respect and communication. The secret is that when you make the other person happy, you’re always going to be happy because great things will happen to you.

HERE, WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE TOP CONDO KINGS OF THE CITY THAT REIGN IN THE FIELD OF LUXURY RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT. WE GET THE INSIDE SCOOP ON INDUSTRY TRENDS, THE MIAMI REAL ESTATE MARKET, WHAT THE FUTURE LOOKS LIKE AND MORE. BY PAIGE MASTRANDREA

CARLOS ROSSO Related Group What’s your latest residential project and what makes it unique in the competitive Miami real estate market? We recently completed SLS Hotel and Residences Brickell and are confident that it has raised the bar for what people expect out of a luxury condominium. With a fully integrated sbe-managed hotel component, residents are able to request room service, reserve the spa, speak with the concierge or enjoy any of the other perks that have set the best hotels apart. There are also two world-class restaurants built directly into the tower, Fi’lia by Michael Schwartz and Bazaar Mar by José Andrés. We have also finished a fantastic project in Hollywood: Hyde Resort. It’s the first phase of our Hyde projects in the area, which are a tremendous success, and are now selling the second phase called Hyde Beach House. We’re also set to deliver Brickell Heights and SLS Lux in Brickell and Paraiso Bay in Edgewater later this year, and will be delivering close to 3,000 units in different submarkets in South Florida. What trends have you noticed within the luxurycondo developments in the city? We’ve seen a great demand for mixed-use projects as the city urbanizes and increases in density. For example, SLS Brickell and SLS LUX’s street-level restaurants and Brickell Heights houses state-ofthe-art Equinox and Soul Cycle Gyms speak to those buyers drawn to the urban lifestyle. They are able to live, work and play without having to drive or worry

PHOTOS COURTESY OF RELATED GROUP

CARLOS ROSSO is the driving force behind Related Group’s condo development projects throughout the city. Above: Rendering of SLS LUX at night. To the right: Rendering of Gran Paraiso.

about parking. Meanwhile, the buyers at our Paraiso projects are looking for a more laid-back style, and so the beach club from chef Michael Schwartz speaks to that. They are still just a short drive from areas like Wynwood and Brickell, so they can have the best of both worlds. What do you find that Miami buyers value most when looking for a luxury condo? It’s no mystery that Miami itself is what draws most buyers. The city has gone through a striking transformation over the past few years and that doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon. Of course, we still have the beautiful weather and beaches that made the city famous in the first place, but now we also have world-class cultural institutions, a thriving culinary scene and more Pritzker prize-winning architects than any other city in the country. Where do most of your buyers come from? It all depends on the project. In Brickell and Edgewater, we continue to see a wide spread of buyers from Latin America, whereas at our Auberge Fort Lauderdale project it’s been mostly domestic and local buyers. What makes the Miami real estate market unique? Miami’s market is unique in that it appeals to everyone in a different way. South Florida’s extremely diverse population is leading to incredibly unique neighborhoods, each with their own personalities. Some buyers will be drawn to Brickell’s big-city feel, while a neighborhood like Coconut Grove will draw someone looking for more village-like surroundings. Another unique aspect is the speed at which Miami has changed. If you look back only 10 years ago, these neighborhoods that we now take for granted would be unrecognizable. The city has a huge amount of momentum behind it and we are all excited to see where it’s headed.

De Laurentiis’ namesake restaurant, Giada

What trends do you foresee in condo developments within the city in the coming years? We keep reinventing ourselves as a company in each project we tackle. We’re bringing to South Florida the most attractive projects designed by innovative designers and integrating museum-quality art into their outdoors, interiors and façades. I believe we are cementing each neighborhood in South Florida, and bringing life to new neighborhoods such as Edgewater and Hollywood/ Hallandale where our projects have had an immensely positive impact. Just in 2016, Related’s projects have created close to $100 million per year in new property taxes for the different counties in South Florida. When we say we are building cities, there is no better proof than that. Favorite Miami neighborhood. Definitely Brickell. It has the best in everything Miami has to offer: food, arts,

shopping, nightlife, you name it. It’s a city unto itself that’s rapidly growing and becoming the go-to neighborhood for anyone looking for a place to live, work and play. It’s the perfect example of what so many of us are pushing for Miami to become.

SV Yachts ALPHA Yacht

CUSTOM JOB

The ALPHA of SV Yachts pushes the boundaries of boating capabilities with a design that excels in performance, style and luxury unlike any other.

Miami has more than its fair share of vintage cars and luxury yachts, but the kind of custom engineering that goes into exotic automobiles

Floyd Raglin and Angela Birdman with friends at SV Yachts ALPHA Launch

has been somewhat of an untapped market for the marine industry—until now. This year at the Miami Boat Show, SV Yachts debuted the ALPHA, PHOTOS COURTESY OF GETTY IMAGES/ALEXANDER TAMARGO

MAURICIO VELEZ AND NIKOLAI SASS The pair can be credited to the creation of SV Yachts. Pictured above at the SV Yachts ALPHA Launch.

a 38-foot, semicustom yacht that looks more like a Batmobile on water than a luxury boat. Designed by SV Yachts co-founders Mauricio Antonio Velez and Nikolai Sass, the yacht acts as a spearhead in the marine market for custom design geared toward the boating connoisseur. When it comes to its twin 700sci Mercury Racing engines with 700 HP SSM stern drives, coupled with the light weight of its 11,200-pound hull made from exotic fibers and push speeds up to 80 knots, ALPHA is a race boat. When it comes to the air intakes at the hull side hips and the louver vents that open up as you see on exotic cars, it’s a superyacht. But when you add in the functional T-Top designed for sun protection and the comfortable sun pads that make it perfect for leisure, it’s a game-changer. “We would go to boat shows and see all those white, gel-coated center console boats, but not so many boats geared toward design with inboard

client wants,” says Sass. “We want them to have the exact boat they’re dreaming about.” And it’s a business strategy that sells. SV Yachts debuted the launch of the vessel with Haute Living at Island Gardens Deep Harbor marina just before the start of the boat show, where a guest list of Miami’s potential high-end buyers got the first look at ALPHA and the yacht made its first sale. The hype only continued to spread throughout the week as more and more potential buyers have reached out with positive feedback about the model, both from core clients and from onlookers attending the show. “Thousands of people were photographing the boat because it looks so different from the others, and they’re attracted to that,” Velez says. “We have so many pictures of people standing on other boats, but taking pictures of ALPHA, and it’s so great as a new company getting started to receive such positive response.” At present, Sass and Velez are continuing to focus on ALPHA with a 2018 model in the works, which will aim to include more of the gadgets and fea-

engines and nice color and all of that,” Sass says. “It was missing from the market, and trying to fill that gap is how this started.” The two designers hail from backgrounds with strong boating influences

tures that people already love while further developing the original model to attract a broader range of clientele that want other amenities, such as a longer boat or a cabin fit for overnight stay. The company wants to eventually expand into Europe, but is taking its time with the process and keeping the company national for now. “We’ll definitely be tapping into the international market, but we’re so pleased with the debut in Miami,” says Velez. “We want to make sure we don’t compromise the quality of our product or our company, and continue to keep building the best boat for our buyers.”

in international environments. Sass says his inspiration for ALPHA largely came from the classic wooden boats of Switzerland and his time spent sailing in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, while Velez’s, a Miami native raised in Puerto Rico, stems from a marine culture that encompasses everything from fishing boats to luxury catamarans. Together, the duo founded SV Yachts in 2016 with a shared vision to build a model that combines both the modern elements of high-performance powerboats and the features that epitomize luxury and functionality. “It’s comparable to the modern four-door Aston Martin,” says Sass. “You PHOTOS COURTESY OF GETTY IMAGES/ALEXANDER TAMARGO

can take it offshore and have fun racing in it, but you can also bring your family along and navigate without sacrificing space and comfort.” The boat is also aesthetically similar to the luxury exotic cars that inspire its sensual curves and uncompromised style, stealing the spotlight at the Miami Boat Show with a bright red interior of the sun pads over the engine hatch and hull. At the same time, it’s a product that is geared toward the client. Many of ALPHA’s features are customizable, from the color of its hull and interior to the active trim of its twin engines for customers who want to take it easy on the speed factor. SV is offering Mercury Racing 520 hp and 565 hp twin options that allow for joystick control and have a trim system designed to react like the paddle-shift transmission systems in old race cars. “We don’t build 200 boats a year, and we’re not a production line or anything like that, so we can build the best product that has the features our

to think out of the box. Luis designs; Laura manages logistics and accounting. Together with seven employees, they conceive some stunning kitchen spaces. It all started at the University of Buenos Aires, where the Argentinian pair met and obtained degrees in architecture. In 1987, they moved to New York, where Luis nurtured a specialty in high-end residential building at a Long Island architecture firm, and Laura worked for a kitchen company. As the Bebchiks’ careers took off, the mid-1990s set the couple on a new course. They moved back to their motherland, launched their TKTKTK

own venture and introduced to the local market appliance heavyweights like Sub-Zero, Wolf and Viking. In 2001, the Bebchiks returned to the United States. This time, they settled in Miami, which has remained their home since. “At the time, we were pioneers at the Design District, which had yet to acquire its current sheen,” says Mr. Bebchik. Today, having opened a second showroom in The Village of Gulfstream Park, they remain as such. As the city bloomed, so did Hausscape. Conceiving strikingly modern yet comfortably streamlined designs, the company not only pumps up the very heart of any home but also syncs its rhythm to the owners’ needs. The Bebchiks know how to seize on the wishes of their customers, who can be found around the world, and spin them into impressive results. “The first interview with the clients is one of the most crucial moments of the design process,” says Mr. Bebchik. “It is the moment where we have to ask the right questions and then listen to the responses very, very seriously… The background that we have as architects allows us to do so very easily. We do not try to impose our ideas, but we suggest general things they may have not thought about before. When the clients see what we pre-

sent to them, they say, ‘Wow, is this our kitchen!’ They are really surprised.” Not only does Hausscape bear unbridled creativity that spawns unique designs, it carries cutting-edge kitchen and bath lines as well as furniture that distinguish it in a competitive industry. German Poggenpohl and Leicht as well as Italian Arredo 3 and Valcucine make up Hausscape’s highend brand roster. The latter is a vanguard in dematerialization (the use of as little materials as possible) — a sustainable philosophy that benefits Hausscape’s aesthetics.
