n In our current political climate, the women’s empowerment movement is getting louder and power suiting has made a triumphant return to fall runways. But these are not the power suits of the 1980s—no Working Girl inspiration here. Designers across the board are redefining them, with fresh takes on silhouette, fabrication and color. Known for their sophisticated workwear, Theory is at the forefront of the suit trend and their Creative Director of Womenswear, Lisa Kulson, continues to reinvent the classics in a modern way. “There’s the Power Jacket—my favorite piece—which has a strong shoulder, a double-breasted closure and a more pronounced waist,” she shares. This is the perfect way to add a commanding element to your work ensemble without losing a feminine silhouette. And for those daring boardroom bosses, Theory offers an edgier take on the classic suit with its Off-The-Shoulder Jacket and HighWaist Legging. Cut from technical fabrics, it is a fresh take that easily moves from a creative office environment to after-work cocktails. Love the classic cut, but looking for an update? Find it with color or texture in Theory’s burgundy and velvet options, respectively. As our work lives and personal lives continue to merge, so should our wardrobes. One of the best things about owning a perfect suit is the endless options. When you’re off the clock, pair your double-breasted jacket with fun loafers and boyfriend jeans, or mix your suit trousers with a sexy heel and a cropped knit for an evening out. Don’t be afraid to ‘work’ it out!

ALL BOXED UP The crisp air, changing leaves and pumpkin spice always signal a new beginning—and the right time for another cool bag. And, once again, the must-have for fall is by Alexander McQueen. With a simultaneous appreciation of heritage and forward thinking to what’s next, the house is constantly at the forefront of the hottest trends. The Box Bag is a nod to its historic traditions, while putting a modern spin Looking to the clootie tree, colorful leather fringing references the beautiful ribbons hung from the branches that represent hopes and dreams of visiting pilgrims. Meanwhile, all-over metal eyelets are a throwback to armor, and intricate embroidery to needlework from the 16th century. STRIKE A CORD Gain the sartorial look with the must-have revamped fabric of the season Fall runways were flush with updates on 1970s corduroy style, with top designers putting a fresh spin on the decade’s silhouettes and styles. So it comes as no surprise that one of the favored fabrics of the era found its way into the house of Brunello Cucinelli. As a brand known for its impeccable fit, styling and fabrications, at first glance, corduroy may seem like an odd fit. But the Italian house flawlessly executes its storied craftsmanship by creating sophisticated pieces grounded in comfort and wearability. In the Cucinelli tailored fit, the sportier corduroy takes on new life as polished off-duty look. Pair a blazer with matching tapered trouser to create a relaxed suit that is perfect for casual lunch meetings. Or throw on a duster for your next weekend trip to view the autumn foliage. With Cucinelli’s sleek silhouettes and eye for detail, you’ll never look dated in the season’s hottest comeback.

LuxuryCORNER Haute Fashion NEW YORK STATE OF MIND Louis Vuitton’s artistic director Kim Jones looks to New York for this season’s highly anticipated collection and buzziest collaboration Chocolate and vanilla, East Coast versus West Coast, uptown or downtown—dichotomies tend to produce the most interesting and dynamic collaborations. And with a history and lifestyle as diverse as New York, it’s no wonder the city has spawned artistic legends with individualized styles like Basquiat, Warhol and Haring. That’s why Louis Vuitton has joined forces with the brand of a thousand person drop lines, Supreme, for a capsule of menswear, accessories and jewelry for Fall

Honoring the originality of Harlem style and Dapper Dan, the Louis Vuitton chocolate and cognac monogram is reinterpreted with Supreme’s iconic box logo and downtown-cool aesthetic. Relaxed silhouettes get an update in fil-coupé and Japanese denim to create luxe, fresh pieces. And living up to its reputation of impeccable workmanship, each piece is made of the highest quality fabrics with the utmost attention to detail. Now, the question is, can you actually get your hands on a piece of the

THE PELLE TESSUTA APPROACH
One brand has revolutionized the accessory realm with classic styles in modern fabrications In this day and age, it seems like you’re either an innovator disrupting the status quo or a heritage brand standing on a firm foundation

of years of craftsmanship. It’s a precious few that can combine the two in a meaningful way, but storied house Ermenegildo Zegna on innovating construction without neglecting traditional methods for its Fall 2017 accessories collection, Pelle Tessuta. In fact, Zegna has taken its more than 100 years of quality construction in the Alpine foothills near Biella, Italy and revolutionized a new material from nappa leather, weaving thin strands on its traditional looms to create a pliable and super-soft ‘fabric’ that is perfect for loafers, belts, bags and wallets. A standout from the inventive collection is the slip-on sneaker, elevated from a standard errand-running shoe to an outfit focal point. Paired with a Zegna jacket and dark denim, the Pelle Tessuta sneaker takes an obvious extra style step.

It is the first step towards collaborating with MercedesAMG, whose engines are known for being ample, reliable and all-around respected.
LuxuryCORNER Haute Auto
ASTON MARTIN DB11 AVAILABLE WITH V8 Don’t worry, it still packs a punch It might be puzzling that Aston Martin is now offering its flagship DB11 with a V8 engine, made by Mercedes-AMG. But after not being part of a larger conglomerate all these years, the former has decided to join forces with the latter. Aston Martin’s new V8 engine is the first visible step towards the collaboration of these two legendary automotive names. For the highly exclusive brand, it provides access to great engines, so it doesn’t have to develop them completely from scratch, which—as it only sells a limited amount of cars each year—takes up a disproportionate amount of its investments. We know this merge might disappoint some fans, but it shouldn’t. Mercedes-AMG engines are ample performers, known for being reliable and all-around respected. With the DB11, you may also wonder why you would want to buy a V8 instead of a V12, or vice versa, depending on your viewpoint. That will be a matter of taste. Aston Martin is not the first to offer a nearly identical car with either a V12 or a V8, though. Bentley did it with both the Flying Spur and the Continental, although the company’s V12 is a W12. Mercedes-AMG has actually made a legacy out of offering the two V8 and V12 options, with both its SL and S-class, for years. Fitting the DB11 with a V8 does more to the car than you might think: while it has almost 100hp fewer than the V12 (503hp against 600hp), it is only 0.1 seconds slower in the 0-60 mph sprint. This is mainly thanks to the 253-pound lighter weight of the V8 version, which has a more compact engine. Overall, you will notice this most around corners—where you have a more agile, responsive car to work with. Aston Martin’s engineers didn’t just take a V8 off the rack at Mercedes-AMG and mount it in the DB11; they modified it so it fits the character of the car. Air intake, throttle response, ECU software and the wet sump lubrication system have, among others, all been customized, and the engine is mounted to a ZF eight-speed gearbox instead. Because of its different size, the V8 is also mounted differently than the V12, resulting in a near-perfect weight balance of 49/51. Visually, it is hard to even tell the V8 and V12 versions of the

DB11 apart, although the price of the V8 starts at $198,995— making it $17,500 less expensive than the V12. So why would anyone still buy the bigger engine? Because it’s exactly that: a 12-cylinder symphony only made nowadays by a handful of car companies. The choice is yours. For those who prefer to keep it lighter, the Aston Martin DB11 V8 can be ordered now with first deliveries expected in last quarter of 2017.

Introduced at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este, this throwback to the 1920s was the vision of a Rolls-Royce connoisseur.
LuxuryCORNER Haute Auto ROLLS-ROYCE SWEEPTAIL Back to the future of ultimate bespoke cars Throughout its existence, Rolls-Royces have been known as the best cars in the world, but being the best is as much about quality and finish as it is about personal experience. In the early days of the company’s history, personal was top-level: the marque delivering the bare chassis and engine to a coachbuilder of your choosing, who would create the body and interior. The passing of time has mostly put an end to this practice, but Rolls-Royce is reinstating it as the ultimate luxury. Its first step was launching the 103EX vision vehicle—in a way, going ‘back to the future’ by allowing customers to have a bespoke car created just for them. Given the company’s expertise, and the coachbuilding craftsmanship it has always nurtured within its facility, RollsRoyce is taking on even more demanding projects now. Introduced at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este this year, its latest was the vision of a RollsRoyce connoisseur who garnered inspiration from the 1920s models. He reimagined them in a modern day creation and took his vision to the esteemed car company. Rolls-Royce then took on the challenge of making his vision into the stunning Phantom Coupé. The design is a merger between modern and vintage PHOTOS COURTESY OF ROLLS-ROYCE
styling elements, without turning retro. While the eyecatcher from the outside is the distinct contrast of that regal front, dominated by the world’s most famous grille and graceful swept tail, the enormous amount of natural light will take your breath away on the inside. This spacious, two-person beauty looks even bigger with the panoramic glass roof that highlights the handcrafted interior. Here, the grandeur continues, created by polished Macassar ebony and open-pore Paldao wood, combined

with the finest leathers in contrasting ‘Moccasin’ and ‘Dark Spice’. While the Sweptail is certainly breathtaking, our opinion doesn’t matter—this is a private vision of what the ultimate Rolls-Royce should be. Just like the 103EX vision vehicle, we believe it will undoubtedly inspire other customers to turn their automotive dreams into reality.

While the 700hp that the new 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS puts down on pavement makes it the most powerful street-legal 911 ever, what’s more important is how it puts down all that power—and gets your adrenaline levels up in the meantime! It all starts with the power plant of this Porsche. The 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine, a modified version of the one found in the 911 Turbo S, gives you not only 80hp more than the 2011 911 GT2 RS, but also 553lb-ft of torque. Where most supercars bring such power to all four wheels these days, the 911 GT2 RS is rear-wheel drive, with rear axle steering to optimize cornering performance. A full tank of gas in the 911 GT2 RS only brings 3.241 pounds to the scale, with an optional Weissach package (that adds $31,000 to the price tag)—which saves another 40 pounds—for those who still find this too much. It may not sound like a lot, but it does include magnesium wheels and increase the handling characteristics of this 911 even more. Another reason to get it: the carbon fiber elements that simultaneously save weight and enhance the look of the car. As a top performer, with an aggressive exterior design, the cockpit embodies this same spirit. Full bucket seats with carbon fiber reinforced backrests not only look great, but offer support where—and when—needed. It’s all part of making this car as driver-oriented as possible. HUBLOT CLASSIC FUSION ITALIA INDEPENDENT COOPERATION AND COLLABORATION WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE CAN BRING YOU FAR IN THIS WORLD. SUCH IS THE CASE WHEN IT COMES to Hublot watches, as the company has been showing us for quite some time with the “Art of Fusion.” This luxury brand has joined forces once again with Italia Independent, and its illustrious founder and creative director, Lapo Elkann, along with the famous Italian tailor Rubinacci. The result shows both the power of the “Art of Fusion” and the effectiveness of this three-way partnership: Rubinacci is a legend in the sartorial world—not only due to the fame of Luca Rubinacci, who runs the empire in Milan, but also by dressing pop icons like Bryan Ferry and royals like the Duke of Kent. It was in the company’s incredible collection of fabrics, all 60,000 square meters of them, that Hublot and Italia Independent found what they were looking for. The precious fabrics selected were used to dress the watch, the chronograph version of Hublot’s Classic Fusion, extending from the strap all the

way to the dial—excluding the two sub-dials (to break up the pattern and get a visually more enticing composition, as well as improve legibility). But no matter which watch from the Classic Fusion Italia Independent Collection you choose—a tartan, pieds-de-poule or Prince-de-Galles—you are going to make a statement. Even the 45mm cases are crafted from either titanium, black ceramic or Hublot’s proprietary King Gold, with clasps to match and fitted with Hublot caliber HUB1143 automatic chronograph movement. All of the watches in this collection are limited: only 100 were created in the titanium and ceramic and only 50 made out of King Gold. So you will certainly feel special to get one on your wrist.

MOON PHASE WATCHES WHEN IT COMES TO PRACTICAL USE, IT DOESN’T SCORE VERY HIGH. UNLESS YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL OR AMATEUR ASTRONOMER, you probably won’t be using the information it provides on a regular basis—if at all. However, when you ask a watch connoisseur about his or her favorite complications, the moon phase ranks surprisingly high. In fact, a moon phase can change the entire look of a watch. A. Lange & Söhne’s signature, Lange 1, is a very tempting piece to begin with, but the Lange 1 Moon Phase adds just a little more. Even when it’s not the most functional, it makes quite a visual impact. Perhaps this is also a bit of nostalgia, seeing the moon on the dial of your watch. It brings you back to the earlier days of watchmaking, when it was one of the first complications developed. To this day, almost all of the great brands have at least one moon phase model available in their collections. Like Jaeger-LeCoultre, they are also commonly housed in their most iconic cases, à la the Reverso. Some brands even give the complication center stage, such as Jaquet Droz, showing the moon in great detail with its Grande Seconde Moon. On this model, the moon phase is actually larger than the dial that displays the hours and minutes. But as Hublot proves, it’s not only the classically styled watches that look good with this complication: the moon phase on the company’s Big Bang Perpetual Calendar Sapphire adds a dash of color in an otherwise fully transparent watch—making it even more eye-catching than it already is. It also shows that the moon phase has a rightful place in contemporarily styled watches with what has become, quite frankly, a timeless appeal.

LuxuryCORNER Haute Yacht SCARO DESIGN LAUNCHES ITS TEMPTING AEON 380 The perfect blend of power and relaxation
Turkish studio Scaro Design’s new yacht concept, AEON 380, is the first in the company’s latest launch—measuring 38.35 meters, while other models in the near future will be as long as 46 meters. The AEON 380 may just be an exercise in design, combining an agile bow with a stern that is seemingly inspired by the luxury yachts of the early 1900s. All are united in a very modern style, with large windows flooding the interior with natural light. Meanwhile, five cabins offer space for a total of 12 people, spread out over a generous owner’s suite, two VIP suites, and two twin cabins. And an additional five cabins are available for a crew of ten people. These factors surely indicate what the goal was when Scaro Design penned the AEON 380 yacht concept: total luxury and relaxation for its owners and guests alike.

There is also ample space to sunbathe; an al fresco dining area with fixed seating; a more formal, indoor dining area at the front of the main cabin; a hull and superstructure following the glass-reinforced epoxy sandwich construction method; and two Caterpillar C32 ACERT engines that offer 1.900 hp each. With a cruising speed of 18 knots and top speed of 20 knots, the fuel capacity of 40,000 liters offers the comfortable cruising range of 2.250 nautical miles. That makes the AEON 380 not only perfect to hop islands in the Caribbean, but also to explore all of the gems in the Mediterranean.

When it comes to superyachts in particular, styling is becoming increasingly more important. New technologies allow for more challenging designs to become a reality and many shipyards are taking advantage. That is why Italian superyacht builder Rossinavi enlisted Pininfarina to design its latest concept. Measuring 230 feet (or 70 meters), the Aurea was developed to capture your attention—and hold it. Fluid lines give the yacht a unique dynamic, which is further enhanced by rare features, such as a pool surrounding a lounge area at the aft section, and wooden decks and beautiful staircases that connect the different areas. In many ways, the Aurea is a next-level superyacht—not only in terms of design, but in the way owners and their guests can enjoy it. For instance, the sundeck offers spectacular views and is large enough for six sun loungers, with a whirlpool and dining area available on the deck below. The master suite features a private balcony and large windows, while the guest

cabins enjoy a similar setup in a shared outdoor area that can be utilized for events and get-togethers. Although technical details have yet to be released, Rossinavi confirmed that the Aurea will also be fitted with a dieselelectric propulsion that will be uniquely placed in the middle of the yacht, rather than at the stern, to open up more space for the beach club. Perhaps the most beautiful aspect of the Aurea, overall, is that form and function achieve a synergy we know well from Pininfarina’s designs for Ferrari, but that is still rather new to the world of superyachts. It gives us a glimpse into the future— and we cannot wait to see it in real life!

LuxuryCORNER Haute Jet THE GOLDEN AGE OF TRAVEL Showcasing the sleek and stunning Embraer Manhattan
LIVING THE HIGH LIFE With so many stately features, the Embraer Manhattan essentially combines the styles of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building in one.
ART DECO APARTMENT? PRIVATE CLUB? LUXURIOUS RESTAURANT? THE NEW MANHATTAN BY EMBRAER IS ALL OF THESE AT ONCE— and the best part is, it can take you wherever you want to go. The Manhattan is a design concept that Embraer based on the Lineage 1000E, particularly desired by the rich and famous because of its versatility. It offers plenty of space, yet is still nimble enough to land at airports such as Aspen and London City. But the range of 4,600 nautical miles also means you can fly from New York nonstop to pretty much any major city in Europe. Embraer shows off what you can do with all the space that the Lineage 1000E offers. The Manhattan’s mahogany wood panels, brass and gold trim, and stunning artwork takes the interior of this private jet to a whole other level. offers an upscale dining option for six people. Its design takes us back to the olden days (in a good way), even modifying some of the windows to create the desired effect. In fact, it might take actually looking outside or hearing the modest hum of the jet engines to know that you are actually airborne, rather than in an opulent apartment in the city that never sleeps. The outside of the plane has been transformed, as well, with a dark blue livery that features polished silver stripes and wings, reminiscent of such cars of that era as the legendary Bugattis and Duesenbergs. In the long run, with the Manhattan, Embraer gives a lesson in creativity and proves the sky is not the limit—especially when we’re talking about private jets!

Due to the large space, the jet can accommodate different sections, too: while the Cloud Club transports you back to the 1920s, the Crystal Room

VIVA BARCELONA The Absinthe Group’s newest restaurant serves up inspired Catalan cuisine that transports diners to the Spanish coast. Sometimes for a restaurant to remain successful and current, it must shut down and reopen with an entirely new look and menu. Such was the case for The Absinthe Group’s (TAG) Boxing Room. On the eve of the group’s for a reconcepting. It emerged mid-summer as Barcino, a gorgeous new Catalan dining destination helmed by chef Ryan McIlwraith. Spain is having a moment in San Francisco’s culinary scene with Barcino’s sister restaurant, Bellota, flourishing in SOMA. It was only natural for TAG’s founder, industry vet Bill Russell-Shapiro, to follow the trend. While Bellota serves classic Spanish cuisine with a California twist, Barcino specializes in contemporary and innovative Catalan fare. Inspired by Barcelona’s famed pa amb tomaquet, McIlwraith serves crusty toasted baguette slices slathered with tomato pulp and other delightful Spanish toppings like sobrasada sausage and jamon Iberico. Raw bar offerings—oyster, octopus, dry-aged beef, etc.—are creative and seasonal. The standout amongst the fish is the lightly smoked salmon with pickled plums, served on a pool

of incredible, intensely creamy almond gazpacho. The generously sized tapas are made with traditional ingredients, but have an unexpected preparation or unusual presentation. For example, the Caesar salad has all the quintessential components (Romaine lettuce, grated cheese, briny anchovies, and crisp bread), but it’s not your typical Caesar. It’s a heart of Romaine covered in a generous layer of Manchego breadcrumbs, with boquerones (marinated anchovies) draped elegantly over the top. It’s absolutely heavenly: the texture is wonderful and the flavor perfect—it’s a dynamic dish we’d happily eat over and over again. Tortilla, the humble egg and potato pie, is indulgently reimagined as a mound of warm potato chips topped with a sunny-side up egg. Jamon, caviar, and Idiazabal cheese crema make it deliciously decadent. A dish this opulent requires a refreshing libation to cut the richness. Luckily, Barcino’s beverage program offers plenty. There are craft cocktails (try the Up-to-Date, a well-balanced mixture of rye, orange liqueur, and oloroso sherry) and large format cava, plus interesting Spanish varietals such as Parellada, a fresh, young, delightful white wine. In the mood for dessert? The brown sugar natilla with roasted peaches, salted vanilla crumble, and sour meringue is superb; it’s creamy, sweet, fruity, and salty all at the same time. With live greenery, spidery ferns, exposed wood beams, metal trellises, and a massive mirror with an etched map of Barcelona, the space has been given a modern transformation. Barcino proves, with a fresh look and great menu, that TAG is still at the top of their game.
THE ABSINTHE GROUP’S EMPIRE The secret behind the restaurant group’s longevity? According to Russell-Shapiro it’s “due to the long tenure of a surprising number of our staff. They show a loyalty and interest in TAG that I hope reflects the loyalty I feel toward them. Our location is good, the food is good and I think we have built a very attractive place. But it comes down to the people who are there doing the work every day. That makes the difference.” Below, we remind you what you’ll find at each of Russell-Shapiro’s restaurants. Absinthe Brasserie & Bar The always bustling bar and adjacent restaurant offer classic cocktails and upscale French Mediterranean food like coq au vin and grilled octopus with squid-ink risotto. It’s slightly sweet with a syrupy texture that’s not cloying, but full-bodied and lovely. Lillet can be enjoyed on the rocks, mixed with tonic or sparkling water to make a spritzer, or as a sweetener in a creative cocktail. At Ginger’s, the newest bar from the team behind Bourbon & Branch, Rickhouse, Tradition, and Pagan Idol, manager Michael Sedlacek uses Lillet Rosé in a festive libation called Pink Party. Singer directed the pilot, which is edgier and darker than the movies. It tells the story of two families coming together as they fight for survival. In The Gifted, a government agency called the Sentinel Services is plucking mutants off the street and putting them in detention centers. The Sentinels are trying to keep the public safe from mutants, even if the mutants do no harm. Stephen Moyer plays a prosecutor, Reed Strucker, who is in charge of detaining the mutants. After a dangerous incident involving a high school dance, he realizes that his two children are mutants. Family comes first and they run from the government. At the same time, there is an underground group of mutants, similar to the underground railroad, that shuttles and transports mutants across the border, down to Mexico. The Struckers appeal to this group of mutants for help. Blink, a runaway since she was 15, is being hunted by the Sentinel Services when she meets the underground group of mutants. They help Blink, but in doing so they lose a member of their team. Blink feels immensely guilty and this adds to the complexity of the role. “There is a negative

Because you never know.” The Gifted is a live-action X-Men-inspired television show written for Fox by Matt Nix and produced by 20th Century Fox Television in partnership with Marvel Television. Chung plays a
stigma towards mutants,” Chung says. “The pilot finds these two families in precarious situations and they end up meeting each other in order to escape the Sentinel Services, because now the Strucker family is being chased. It’s kind of cool. It’s a tale about two families—one very conventional family, another unconventional family made up of these mutants— depending on each other in order to survive.” Although there are “crazy awesome stunts” and action sequences, Chung warns that the series is

I wanted to do something that made people feel good, like send appreciation, send shout outs to your friends and tell them how much you appreciate them. #Instantkarma is a way to just feel good. It’s a way to give back to my readers and my followers, and it gives them a nice little treat.” Fans reacted positively to the campaign and Chung has kept it up partnering with brands like Kate Spade and Marriott. To Chung, social media interactions are priceless. “You get real feedback on your work, whether it’s solicited or not. You get a lot of people who send you love when you’re having a bad day, and vice versa. I get to meet the people who are behind my fan pages, and get to know a little bit about them. I don’t know. It’s a two-way street, but it’s also so intriguing to know the people who support me in my career. I want to do something with them, supporting them and what they’re doing in their lives. I think it’s cool.” She acknowledges that her fanbase, at just one million Instagram followers, is “a manageable amount of fans.” While she isn’t afraid to mingle with her masses, Chung’s biggest fans are her family. The San Francisco native, who grew up near City College and attended Lowell High School, frequently returns home to spend time with her siblings and parents. “One of my favorite things

Is an intricate folkloric dress inspired by Russia or Mexico? It’s a mixture of both. Is that spectacular print cherry blossoms or sea anemone? It’s a little bit of each. “My collection is never like—just one thing. It’s always a mix of different things. I guess I am a greedy boy. I’m not satisfied with only one thing. I want many things. It’s also like modern cuisine as well, you want a lot of things: different flavors balancing each other.” While Gn loves the over-the-top opulence of combining many things in his designs, on a personal level he’s much more subdued. He’s rarely seen wearing print or color. His all-black uniform consists of plain t-shirts, turtlenecks, pants, and jackets. He’s creating so much fantastical fashion then when it comes to himself he’s simply not interested. He equates it to the

turns Gn’s thoughts toward food. He loves to cook and when he does, he treats his ingredients like he does his designs. “It’s no longer just spicy grilled meat and vegetables. I am obsessed with cooking. When I cook it’s all about mixing very unexpected things together.” Tonight he’ll dine at one of his favorite restaurants in San Francisco—Cotogna, Quince, or Zuni. If he’s in the mood for dim sum, he’ll go to Yank Sing. But before he can eat, it’s back to Betty Lin to finish overseeing the unpacking of his ornate artisanal gowns. Gn turns to go, but stops and says he wants to share his motto. “Be gutsy and fearless,” he says. “Ultimate luxury, that is my mantra. Beauty and luxury always—no compromises.” Words to live by from the global fashion tribe’s worldly leader.

MOLLY SIMS HAS TRADED PRIME TIME FOR PLAYTIME AND THE CATWALK FOR BABYTALK. HERE SHE OPENS UP ABOUT DOMESTIC BLISS. BY KATIE SWEENEY
AFTER GIVING BIRTH TO THREE CHILDREN IN LESS THAN FIVE years, Molly Sims is more super mother than supermodel. Instead of walking the runways, she’s chasing runaway toddlers. Instead of traveling to exotic locations to shoot Sports Illustrated’s annual swimsuit issue, she’s staging iPhone shoots at home that chronicle the monthly growth of her eighth-month old son, Grey Douglas. Instead of hosting MTV’s House of Style, she hosts a DIY mom-friendly YouTube channel. Instead of filming PHOTO COURTESY OF ALLEN DANIEL

Then you get pregnant. Then you get pregnant again. Then you get pregnant again. For me, all the change was a little overwhelming,” Sims recently told Haute Living. And yet, she takes it gracefully and passionately with stride. Instead of wallowing, she’s embraced the chaos that is her current life and refers to it lovingly as a “happy mess.” In fact, she has a neon red sign with those words on a wall at her home. It serves as a reminder to welcome the craziness and all the challenges it brings. “I mean, it can get messy. That’s for sure. I guess my best advice is embrace the mess and be involved in it and don’t miss those moments. It’s hard. I’m not going to lie. It’s a lot, but it’s that beautiful happy mess,” she says with a hint of Southern twang in her voice.

learned to let go of worrying too much. The final chapter in the book is titled “keeping sh*t real.” She realizes that the haters are going to hate and there is nothing she can do about it, so why let it get her down? “Honestly, I don’t even care anymore. I just burst out laughing. I’m like ‘God, the news must be really slow to have a whole Daily Mail article dedicated to me holding a phone case upside down,’” Sims says. She is referring to a recent article in which she is mocked for posing with an iPhone upside down. “All the people who are in the public who have a public lifestyle, we just have to do the best we can. No one’s perfect. I mean, you’ll get criticized wearing your babybjörn one inch higher or one inch lower. People will tear you apart just to do it. Mommy shaming can be really bad. We need to be each other’s advocates as opposed to haters.” Sims is concerned about how social media will affect the life of her young daughter. “It’s tricky. That’s the one thing I do worry about even now. I think because social media has changed all of that so much and it’s so—everything is about being Photoshopped and Photoshopped again, and Instagram and Facetime. You just have to be a positive reinforcement that you’re enough and you’re good,” she

THE SYMPHONY GALA
Musical director Michael Tilson Thomas conducts the 2016 Symphony Gala
The following week, the main event is the San Francisco Symphony’s 2017 Opening Night Gala on Thursday, September 14. According to gala chair Priscilla Geeslin, preparations for the evening began last November. “It's a lot of planning, you know. First of all who is going to be on the committees. I have a great dinner committee that reports to me, for lack of a better term, to set up what the dinner is going to look like in the Patrons’ Tent,” Geeslin told Haute Living in early August. “Then we discuss, early on, décor, dinners, our approach to selling, social media; we have a social media chair this year, who has been amazing. And then what the overall look of the evening is going to be. From, you know, when you first step on the sidewalk going into Davies till the end of the evening with the after-parties. We all get together and think about, well, what is it that we want to have at the Gala? What is it that makes the Gala interesting, and exciting for people so that they want to come year after year? For some people it's the dinner and being with their friends, and putting together these tables. But it's also the opening of this spectacular institution that we have in the San Francisco Symphony. Starting that season of music that I think we all look forward to.” The Symphony’s gala follows a similar format to the Opera Ball, but what makes it unique is that there are four separate dinners before the show. Geeslin explains it like this: “There are various dinners. There's Symphonix, there's Symphony Supper, there is dinner in the Wattis Room, and the Patrons’ Dinner. I'm the overall chair, with an incredible group of people who are chairing the other events that evening. So we all work together. They've already sold out Symphonix, Wattis Room isn't far behind, and Patrons’ Dinner isn't far behind.” All guests are invited to either City Hall or Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall at 5 p.m. for a cocktail reception. From there, symphony lovers have a variety of dining options

WHAT THE EVENTS BENEFIT The Opera Ball Proceeds fund the Opera Guild’s education programs and other initiatives of the company including interactive workshops for kids and the Aria Festival where children write and produce original operas. “We started bringing students to the main stage for opera 78 years ago,” Jane Mudge the Opera Guild’s president says. “We provide increasingly substantial in-school programs—a lot of it fills a gap when schools eliminate music instruction from the curriculum.” The Symphony Gala The opening night event benefits the San Francisco Symphony’s many artistic, community, and education programs. “The money that gala guests are paying is going to something that is truly worthwhile and a part of our community,” Priscilla Geeslin, the chair of the event says. “Our education programs stand out. We get to support our Youth Orchestra, Adventures in Music, etc.” Proceeds also provide mentoring for

children musicians and musical education for every student in grades 1-5 in San Francisco’s public elementary schools. San Francisco Fall Art & Antiques Show For the past 36 years, the event has donated to the Enterprise for High School Students, a nonprofit that helps young adults and teenagers prepare for life in adulthood. “The workshops are intensive and powerful for these students because it gives them a leg up in a world that they might not have had without Enterprise,” the show’s director Ariane Trimuschat says. to choose from. The most exclusive meal is the Patrons’ dinner, which takes place in a tented pavilion. This is where SF’s upper echelon of philanthropists can be found come symphony night. The next level down is the dinner that takes place in the Wattis room at Davies Symphony Hall. The Symphony Supper and the Symphonix events are for younger professionals—both meals occur in the elaborately and clean. We worked with an incredible group called Blueprint. I'd like to say I'm the creative genius behind it, but I'm not,” Geeslin says of the event’s overall elegant look. “Blueprint puts together something spectacular and always lovely. They did it last year and I loved working with them and we're working together with them again this year. Dan McCall is putting together a great dinner; great wines, great sparkling wines, and I think that's what makes it such a wonderful evening, and why people really love coming to it.” Each dinner package coincides with a different seating assignment for the main event. and the other dinner locations to Davies for the performance. Music director Michael Tilson Thomas has put together a spectacular show. The entire upcoming season will pay tribute to Leonard Bernstein, in celebration of the composer’s 100th birthday. The concert will open with his overture to Candide. Superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma is performing two beloved works, Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme and the Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1. The orchestra will then perform perennial favorite, Ravel’s Boléro. Speaking of the actual show, Geeslin breathlessly says, “It's always different. We always try to be very, very creative. I think the exciting part about this year is that YoYo Ma is going to be playing. And that's always... What's the right way to put that? He is so fabulous. To be playing with our incredible orchestra, and with Michael, that's going to be the highlight of the evening.” Geeslin says her favorite moment every year is just after every one takes their seats in the grand hall. “It's the excitement of walking into the hall and hearing the Star Spangled Banner. You realize that you have a year ahead of you full of incredSan Francisco Symphony President Sako Fisher and Priscilla Geeslin
ible music and incredible opportunity to hear all kinds of music—that's what Michael programs so beautifully at the symphony, and I think that's what people look forward to.” After the performance, guests will filter to a tented pavilion on Grove Street where there will be two stages with live music entertainment, including a set by DJL!. Pine Ridge Vineyards and Seghesio Family Vineyards are generously providing the wine for the entire evening. Many of the city’s best restaurants, such as Top of the Mark, Maybeck’s, Salt & Straw, and The Dorian, will have stations

MEET THE FASHION DESIGNERS WHO ARE DEFINING SAN FRANCISCO STYLE ALTHOUGH THE INTERNATIONAL FASHION COMMUNITY HAS LONG OVERLOOKED SAN FRANCISCO, considering it a no man’s land of denim and hoodies, locals—and savvy international designers like Andrew Gn—know that the fashion scene here is thriving. “Oh my god, are you kidding me? There is a fashion community,” Gn said when we asked him if SF is a fashion-forward city. “There is fashion! There can’t be more fashion than there is.” People like Emily Holt, former editor turned Hero Shop-owner, and Mary Gonsalves Kinney, Silicon Valley’s secret stylist, are paving the way for Bay Area-based designers, acting as advocates for small brands and allowing them to flourish. It’s actually a thrilling time for fashion in SF. Designers aren’t afraid to experiment with the avant-garde because there is no status quo dictating what can and can not be done. The close proximity to the tech industry means that fashion entrepreneurs have alternative backgrounds and a completely different point of view from the mainstream. Where else in the world can you find Japanese-inspired couture dresses, incredibly soft, wildly chic leather moto jackets, and comfortable pointy-toed flats made from recycled water bottles? Only in SF. If you haven’t started to shop and support local makers, it’s about time to change your ways. Here, in alphabetical order, are the top ten most important Bay Area-based fashion designers.

AMOUR VERT Eco-friendly stylish basics
In 2009, a Stanford-based French engineer noticed that there was a serious lack of sustainable and ethical fashion options. So, Linda Balti set out to create a collection of clothing that was made from specially engineered textiles, blended fabrics, and low-impact dyes. Amour Vert, which translates to ‘green love’ in French, is the resulting brand that has quickly become a cult favorite among SF’s fashion bloggers. “San Francisco is very laid back and it reflects in the fashion. It’s about easy and cool things that are not so pretentious but that you feel good in most of all,” Balti says. She has also made it a point to give back to the environment from the get-go. For every super soft, perfectly cut, French-inspired tee that’s sold, a tree is planted someplace in the United States. Since the brand’s inception eight years ago, over 145,393 trees have been planted. Shop the brand’s flirty silk dresses, sophisticated basics, and luxe layering pieces at boutiques in Hayes Valley, Palo Alto, Pacific Heights, and the Marina.

CAT WU Perfectly fit luxe essentials
Cat Wu’s story began when textile designer Catherine Wu was sick of searching for the perfect leather jacket. She scoured the world for a vintage-inspired, incredibly wearable, ideally fitting leather moto jacket. When she couldn’t find the one, she decided to make her own and her namesake line was born. “My moto is definitely the piece I can’t live without. It’s what inspired my line,” she says. “It’s that classic piece you can wear all day everyday and adds that bit of edge to any outfit. It’s also the softest leather you’ll ever feel. When in doubt, I throw one of my motos on—whether I’m heading to a work meeting or a night out.” For fall, Wu has expanded upon her signature piece by designing a micro collection of essentials every woman should have in her closet. These are investment pieces you’ll return to season after season. “The perfect blazer, the perfect coat, the perfect tote. I obsessed over the fit of each one and designed them in buttery soft leathers and suedes that look and feel amazing on.” A trip to Japan inspired her to focus this new line on architecture, fit, and texture. “I came back and started creating this gorgeous clean-lined suede coat that’s now a staple in my wardrobe and I’m launching in the fall. There’s an element of ‘borrowing from the boys’ while balancing that with femininity. “
“SF is very remote from the NY/LA fashion scene which can be challenging when you are a young brand trying to raise awareness, but it is also a blessing because it forces you to focus on your business and not get distracted.” — Linda Balti
“My dad always told me to ‘do what you love and the doors will open.’ I’ve gone back to that so many times in my journey. You may face challenges and mistakes along the way, but they were all meant to lead you through that next door.” — Catherine Wu 93

DILARA SAATCHI Exotic jewels
Dilara Saatchi is a women of the world. She was born in Istanbul and raised in Berlin, but decided to start her namesake jewelry brand in San Francisco. Saatchi works with Turkish artisans to create oneof-a-kind necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Her current collection features pieces that are made out of oxidized silver, black rhodium, and pave diamonds. “I see my collection as ‘everyday diamonds.’
“SF ladies are open to push themselves a little bit and get out of their comfort zone to achieve the fashion look they actually desire.” — Dilara Saatchi
I am a huge fan of the effortless look,” she says. “Look absolutely fabulous, but convey the image that it all comes together effortlessly. With these pieces you can layer and mix and match materials where you can easily create that look.” Her designs are more intricate than flashy and have a subtle edge. “My line does not have the very ‘showy look’ using huge diamonds and gemstones. I think that’s a reason why it has been so well received here in SF.” Her long pendant necklace looks ideal with the modern uniform of a crisp white shirt, great-fitting skinny jeans, and classic black pumps.
If you’re looking for an alternative to the basic diamond wedding ring that everyone is wearing these days, allow us to introduce you to Emily P. Wheeler or EPW. The EPW fine jewelry line is comprised of pave and baguette diamond earrings, rings, necklaces and bracelets in 14 karat and 18 karat white, yellow, and rose gold. Each piece is handmade in LA with the highest quality materials used. From a modern blue-green grossular garnet set inside a jeweled frame to a cigar ring filled with tiny diamonds, her rings are unlike anything we’ve ever seen before—and we love them! Wheeler describes the cigar ring like this: “It has the presence of a large cocktail ring but doesn’t get in the way, and can be layered with lots of other jewelry. All the pave diamonds are set with the most powerful magnifying lens in the industry, allowing for accuracy and precision. This enables the stones to catch and reflect light perfectly, making them extra sparkly! It packs a punch but is comfortable and wearable.” This could be said of her entire collection—it’s contemporary, gorgeous, and unique.

ERICA TANOV Timeless treasures
A pioneer in the Bay Area’s fashion industry, Erica Tanov has been making natural, feminine clothing for 23 years. Her flagship boutique is in Berkeley and she opened a second store in Marin in 2010. She says the biggest challenge she’s faced as a Bay Area-based designer is the lack of “access to the showrooms, fabric and trim resources, modeling agencies right at your fingertips. Finding sewing contractors specializing in high-quality, small production runs is getting more and more difficult.” Tanov’s signature piece is the silky Lola slip, a timeless number that can be worn as an underpinning or a dress and comes in a wide range of colors. Her upcoming collection is “inspired by nature’s beautiful decay. Layers of textural fabrics eliciting lichen-laced bark, peeling and crumbling walls in a rich color palette of faded rose, muted chartreuse, deep forest and dark basalt with hints of gold throughout. The original print for the season is a drawing I did years ago of wilting petunias. It’s a melancholy yet decadent collection meant to be layered. The silhouettes are simple, elegant and feminine.”
“I don’t feel you have to live in a major fashion city to be creative, in fact the opposite is true for me. Feeling grounded allows me more freedom to design.” — Erica Tanov
JAKE Bespoke suits and gowns
Many people know Jake Wall as the guy who quit Project Runway when his dog died. However, we know him as one of the city’s most creative, talented, and original fashion designers. Since he walked away from the reality television competition, Wall has made a name for himself with his effortless shirtdresses, chinoiserie-printed bomber jackets,
PHOTOS COURTESY OF DILARA SAATCHI, ALANNA HALE, MICHAEL WEBER, JAKE, DREW ALTIZER, JEN KAY, AND EMILY P. WHEELER
and custom gowns and suiting. Upon entering his sumptuous Jackson Square atelier, you’d be surprised to learn that Wall did not attend fashion school. “As one mentor constantly reminds us, ‘I think you succeed because you weren’t ruined by fashion school… you were never taught what you couldn’t do, instead you think anything is possible. It’s that spark that makes you a force to watch, to wear, and to reckon with.’” His styles—think a men’s suit with shorts, and a women’s dress with exceptionally long sleeves—may not always be practical, but they are fabulous, over-the-top, and fun, which is what fashion should be, right?
“Whether you are a man or a woman you need at least one Jake bespoke threepiece – jacket, vest, trousers – suit in your closet. Our bespoke process is second to none and created always around the client and how he or she lives his or her day-to-day life.” — Jake Wall
The current collection is called Dangerous Liaisons and it’s inspired by Wall’s story of 2017. “As SF begins to shift towards our fall months which are more accurately described as an Indian summer, we look to how our 2017 collection layers up and down with the perfect level of refinement for a gala or the ready-to-go needs of hitting up the grocery store. Dangerous Liaisons is versatile and allows you to dress up as much as dress it down depending upon what life throws your way.”

“One who dares wins. Take a risk, life is too short not to wear color!” — Sonya Molodetskaya
MAJOR OBSESSIONS Sequined and velvet separates When local fashionista Sonya Molodetskaya met fellow Russian-born seamstress Altana Danzhalova, she asked Danzhalova to create a few one-of-a-kind pieces for her personal closet. The clothing featured styles—velvet, sequins, grosgrain ribbon—that Molodetskaya was majorly obsessed with. Molodetskaya’s thousands of Instagram followers took note of the new clothes and so, the duo decided to give the brand a go. “Major Obsessions has been quite busy lately. The Fall/Summer 2016 collection and the Summer 2017 were sold out after two very successful fashion shows,” Molodetskaya says. “Right now we are working on our Fall 2017 which we would rather keep a secret, but I can say it will have lots of feminine touches such as ruffles, velvet, and my favorite—sequins and feathers.” She is inspired by street style and her constant travels to New York, Milan, and Paris Fashion weeks. “I keep my eyes wide open. The name Major Obsessions means the styles people are obsessed with at this moment. Altana and I ‘pick up’ those trends and create our own version of them. Major Obsessions is all about current trends.”
ROTHY’S Comfortable classic shoes
The hottest new shoes for women in SF were created by two men, Stephen P. Hawthornthwaite and W. Roth Martin, whose backgrounds are in investment and design. Years of constantly walking up and down the city’s hills combined with an epidemic of flip-flops and sneakers encouraged Hawthornthwaite and Martin to seek a stylish alternative to tennis shoes and sandals. They set out to create a shoe that felt as comfy as sneakers, but as stylish as Jimmy Choos—and they succeeded. “Rothy’s are stylish, comfortable and versatile shoe—just what a woman on-the-go needs,” Martin says. “They’re made of recycled plastic water bottles using a low-waste manufacturing process. You can look good in and feel good about wearing your Rothy’s! They’re available in two silhouettes—the Flat and the Point–and a multitude of colorways and patterns based on a woman’s needs and seasonality. They’re a wardrobe gamechanger: they offer the ease and comfort of a sneaker and the feminine polish of a chic flat.” Although the brand is young, it’s already developed a base following. “Our customers are incredibly loyal and vocal. Once they fall for the brand, they tell all of their friends. They also lead particularly active lifestyles so demand both style and comfort. We are focused on keeping our customers, San Franciscan or not, happy by making a great product from the ground up which they can be proud to support.”

“What we’re really doing is elegantly solving a dilemma every woman has faced as she stares into her closet wondering what to choose to gracefully move through everything she needs to do during her day and evening.” — W. Roth Martin 96

STEVIE HOWELL Hand-painted silks
Is she an artist or a designer? That is the question that comes to mind when we think of Stevie Howell. The easy answer is: she’s both. Howell is known for making wearable art in the form of luxurious and sexy loungewear, kimonos, and scarves. She paints directly on to fabric—silk, cashmere, cotton, and satin—to create exclusive items for her namesake line. Howell also collaborates with brands like Anthropologie to craft beautiful textiles, bedding, and wallpaper. She says that every San Franciscan should own one of her silk robes—and we couldn’t agree more. “They are my go-to for basically every occasion and activity. There is the sleeping robe, the post-shower robe, the casual over-jeans robe, the fancier out-on-the-town robe, the travel robe, and the bathing suit coverup robe. They really are the most versatile and comfortable item!” What

distinguishes the SF market from other fashion places? “The lack of seasonality. I always include a few cashmere scarves in my summer collections which most buyers think is insane, but they always sell in SF!”
TOKYO GAMINE Custom couture
When Yuka Uehara decided to launch a haute couture label, stylist Maria del Puy gave her some words of advice. “Don’t worry about getting yourself out there. Just be you, then the right people will come along and support what you do.” Uehara followed this recommendation and before she knew it her whimsical, playful, sculptural, madePHOTOS COURTESY OF DREW ALTIZER, MARIA DEL RIO, AND ROTHY’S
in-SF gowns were being worn by local luminaries like Karen Kubin and Jennifer Siebel Newsom. The hardworking designer— sometimes she works for days on end—uses an assortment of materials (raw and woven silks, neoprene, cotton, and synthetics) to make oneof-a-kind jumpers, dresses, and jackets. Each piece is considered a work of art and many are specifically tailored to a client’s personality or a specific event. Uehara is incredibly intuitive and sponge-like— she quietly soaks in everything from the city’s cosmopolitan culture to an intimate conversation with a friend and translates that into her designs. “Music, literature, ballet, opera, films and conversations with friends. I find inspiration in people and how they view, act and react to things. In the end, what sparks my creations are the emotional connections I develop with a particular story or person.”
“San Francisco is an intimate, artistic and liberal city. Every time I meet a new person I feel like I uncover a new subculture. Because of the city’s friendliness and diversity, I feel encouraged to explore and challenge myself creatively.” — Yuka Uehara 97
