omething tells us that Nicolas Berggruen would make a really amazing poker player. Not only does he nonchalantly slip on a pair of sunglasses the moment we arrive at his London hotel suite (effectively hiding his eyes, those pesky, tell-all windows to the soul), but his answers are often confusingly in no relation to the questions asked, especially when the topic veers to the personal. Meaning, he’s wily—and will talk in circles to avoid talking about himself. That the 57-year-old billionaire investor and philanthropist is unfailingly private is no secret. He regularly deflects questions—both personal and professional—maddening media moguls, politicians and more with his elusive manner and cryptic, philosophizing ways. But we understand what he’s doing, why he only provides the most minuscule glimpse into his daily life, be it with actual human interaction or via social media: By controlling the conversation, he’s providing a structure that works for him, allowing his ideas to become the focus of the conversation around him. Or so he hopes. Berggruen is an enigmatic figure, sunglasses or not. There’s his all-black uniform of a T-shirt and jeans that he infrequently departs from (today is no exception); the German accent subtly sprinkled with a dollop of French and a sprinkle of American, a nod to his upbringing—he was born in Paris—and dual citizenships in Germany and America; his affiliation with the arts—he sits on the board of the Berggruen Museum in Berlin, a member of LACMA, the International Councils of the Tate Gallery in London and MoMA in New York; that he has two children, both by surrogate; and his playboy past, living in some of the top hotels in the world. But these are mere details and are not indicative of who he is as a person. And because of this mystery, we need to know: Is the mysterious figure he projects at odds with the person he really is? “I am likely more introspective and interested in the less traveled and explored,” he tells us evasively. And while Berggruen the man may remain a question mark, we aren’t here inside his Claridge’s hotel suite to give Berggruen a personality quiz. The topic of today’s discussion—coincidentally mere days after the first Democratic debates—is his latest literary effort, Renovating Democracy: Governing in the Age of Globalization and Digital Capitalism, a collaboration with his Berggruen Institute co-founder Nathan Gardels. In this analytical discourse for rethinking how democratic systems work, Berggruen lays out the steps necessary to implement change. Those are democracy—rethinking the system; capitalism; how to build a sustainable future for the planet; and how we can reinvent ourselves in the age of artificial intelligence and gene editing.

16 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com

“The book specifically tries to work on the state of our democracies. Democracy in general has conquered half the world—it’s been incredibly effective—but you can see now that any system, even if it’s the best system, needs renewal,” Berggruen explains. “Democracy is really about giving individuals a place in society, a voice—respect, in some ways—equality as humans. It’s also a system. It’s not every individual for themselves; it has to be society as a whole.” But is, as headlines suggest, American society broken beyond repair? We don’t expect a simple answer to this, and Berggruen doesn’t give us one. “I think there are times when the country comes together, like every country,” he says. “I think we’re at an unusual time when divisions are very high. It’s like a pendulum, one extreme to another, but at some point, we’ll come back together. We have no choice.” Is that strictly true, or just a comforting thought? For Berggruen, it’s not just a belief, but a universal truth. “I think that America and other democracies today are experiencing the same phenomenon, which is a very divided environment; everything is very politicized beyond what might be needed,” he notes. “We need to rethink how we function. It’s not beyond repair—it just means we need to address [the problems]. People need to feel like they’re part of the future. [Our division] is very unhealthy. It’s not constructive and it doesn’t bring contentment, which I think is important in advanced societies. We’re so rich—we have so many tools—if we can’t make sure that we provide the human minimums for everyone, then we’re failing.” With the 2020 presidential election looming, it’s a pointed time to release such an analytical look at how the world as a whole could be fixed. Almost as if Berggruen were saying, “See? This is what has to happen if you want to make not just America, but the world, great again.” Here are the steps, here are the tools—now fix it. “How do you give everyone a voice today? How do you do that in a way that brings people together, as opposed to apart?” he wonders. “What’s fraying today is the engagement between citizens and the community and citizens in government. There’s an enormous distrust in government. Government is needed, but it should be a service organization, not a political instrument. More and more it’s treated like a political football, and it’s not really of service to citizens if every issue is politicized. You can’t just put everything up for grabs every day. You need to say, ‘All right, you participate, and at the same time you delegate.’ That’s how democratic systems have worked.” The book, like Berggruen, is largely unbiased, providing a frame of reference for what is broke and solutions as to how things might be fixed. It doesn’t point fingers at any one nation or leader, though some might suspect it should. When we recall reading a recent headline proclaiming “America is toast,” he responds, “America is the most

“DEMOCRACY IS REALLY ABOUT GIVING INDIVIDUALS A PLACE IN SOCIETY, A VOICE— RESPECT... ”

prominent example of a divided or a chaotic domestic environment, but it’s not unique. Look what’s happening in the U.K. [with Brexit and its new prime minister]. The country I was born in, France, is experiencing difficulties and division, as well. It’s pretty much everywhere.” When it comes to his own political affiliation, he’s unbiased, as per the ethos of his nonpartisan Berggruen Institute. To put it simply, he’s Switzerland (literally and figuratively―he went to boarding school there). “We at the Institute don’t get involved—on purpose—in elections; we would lose our neutrality,” he says. “We’re interested in things working for the community, not for one group or another. People are so focused on the candidates… but at the end of the day, the people who get elected are a symptom of what’s happening in society—including [President] Trump. Depending upon who gets elected, you might have an easier pass or a harder pass fixing overall issues, [so when it comes to the official elected] I do think that’s relevant. Sometimes, you need a shock to the system for people to realize that something’s broken and that they’ve got to work on it. Right now, we’re in a position of transition and chaos. We have to reinvent the way we function, and I think that that’s what these messy politics show.” It’s a classic catch-22: Although new ideas are needed, candidates need to win. This is a conflict, because many politicians make empty promises to win, which not only creates conflict, but does not perpetuate change. “[Political candidates] are so focused on the short-term—emotional issues and what they can sell to voters—that unfortunately it’s much harder to address the big long-term issues, and they don’t have time to think about the fundamental issues and problems that face us. They’re generally just focused on getting elected,” he notes. Not that this matters: In his unbiased opinion, there is no one president, no lone leader, who can fix what has been broken; citizens need to be the change on their own. “I don’t think it’s so much a question of leadership,” he maintains. “This is the point of the book: We have to get ourselves back to the point where the system is reshaped, so it allows [for the healing to begin].” If he’s telling the truth (or directly asked—same, same), he will allow of America’s fearless tweeter: “Donald Trump, because of his personality and the way he manages things as a president, is not a calming force, to say the least. He’s very combative—fueling the fire is his style. But the media also fuels the fire, so it feeds on itself.” In other words, for someone who thinks big picture, this consistent backdraft isn’t sustainable. “It’s fine for a period, but as a constant way of operating, it becomes toxic after a while,” he says. On the flip side, if there wasn’t already a fundamentally flawed system, Trump might not have been elected in the first place. “Trump came after Obama two times. If things were perfect and stable to begin with, [we wouldn’t be having so many problems],” Berggruen points out. He does, in a much, much less extreme respect, agree with Trump that immigration restrictions—or “reasonable accommodation”—are necessary; matching the skills and education levels of incoming immigrants with an appropriate host economy. “Immigration needs to be tailored to the culture,” he muses. “Some cultures are quite open, some are not, and even then it depends on what kind of immigration. You have to make sure that immigrants add to the strengths of the country. But in truth, countries that have allowed immigration have been much more dynamic. Immigrants in general bring energy and a hunger for the future. Countries that were built that way—like the U.S.—have benefitted enormously through immigration. You just have to have standards, filters and allow legal immigration.” And although he doesn’t have much to say on its immigration policies, the country that fascinates Berggruen the most, without a doubt, is China.

“China is an important element in terms of how we have to think of our democracies,” he notes. “For the first time, we have a real competitor.” He means, specifically, that as a whole, the Asian country has a much more solidified long-term plan for its progression and sustainability in place, with visible results—despite its lack of democracy and communist leadership. “I’m not saying that we should be like China,” he explains. “In fact, [I’m saying] the opposite―cultures aren’t so easily transferable. But we have to take another culture and another political system seriously. China’s not about to disappear. What China does should wake us up a little bit, to see that for the first time we have competition.” We note that when it comes to social media—a subject that he touches upon several times within Renovating Democracy, the opposite would appear true, as the Chinese government controls content by blocking social media apps such as Instagram and Facebook, and carefully monitors the apps and sites that aren’t blocked or banned—which completely goes against American democratic rights. But whose way is right? “In China, social media is the pulse of society, and it is integrated between civil society and government,” he explains. “It’s almost transparent with good and bad. We’ll never accept this here [in America]; it’s total chaos, and governments are way behind the networks. We’ve lost control of what’s happening in society. They have too much control, and we have too little. What is the answer? Probably somewhere in the middle. Our privacy shouldn’t be violated, but at the same time these networks are so powerful that not having a social contract between these networks and society is creating the anxiety and unsettled and divided nature of our [country] today.” He’s not saying China is perfect. Its long-term planning, however, is a different story. “China has issues of its own, but they can enforce cohesion by forcing it, and they can also plan and function in a longer-term way,” Berggruen states. “The way we operate in the West forces us to look at everything very short-term, and that puts us at a disadvantage.” His fascination with China and its governing body not only led him to request several meetings with the country’s president, Xi Jinping, but to also create the second branch of his Berggruen Institute, The Berggruen China Center, in Beijing at Peking University (the first being his flagship at home in Los Angeles). It’s a hub for East-West research and dialogue dedicated to cross-cultural and interdisciplinary study, as well as technologies focused on AI, the microbiome and gene editing. “It’s not by chance [that we built this in Beijing],” he explains. “We went to the two extremes culturally and politically, China and the USA, to establish the two centers of the Institute. At a time when there’s a real clash of civilizations, it’s even more important to maintain a connectivity or communication between those civilizations.” And while Beijing and its Eastern sensibilities hold the most interest currently, Los Angeles is his true love. The sentiment “home is where the heart is” rings true for Berggruen: After decades of bouncing around the world from one luxury hotel to another, Berggruen has finally settled down in the City of Angels and purchased property in West Hollywood. It is also where he chose to locate the Berggruen Institute, currently nestled inside the historic Bradbury Building in Downtown L.A. Berggruen is now planning a new headquarters for his Institute, designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, along with Gensler, landscape architects Michel Desvigne and Inessa Hansch and design partner Mia Lehrer of Studio MLA. The project is described as a contemplative Scholars’ Campus rooted in the natural environment. It will house the Institute’s educational programs, fellows and scholars, and is designed to honor the adjacent land in the Santa Monica Mountains and protect the vast majority of the property’s 447 acres as open space. @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 19

Ames, Hao Ping and Bing Song.

As you can see, Berggruen is putting down roots. He calls Los Angeles the “best place to live on Earth,” referencing its diversity, openness and mixture of cultures as primary reasons for his affection. “It’s a city that’s still in the making. It has talent and creativity in a dozen different areas as opposed to one or two, and it’s at the intersection of ideas and technology more so than any other place.” Berggruen, who turns 58 in August, admits that moving there was “part of a personal journey. I grew up in Paris, lived in London, then New York for a very long time, and now in Los Angeles. I got there organically. In Los Angeles, I came back to what I was interested in when I was a teenager living in Paris, which was philosophy and politics. I spent time with professors at USC and UCLA. One thing led to another. I was interested in ideas, put together a little group to think about these issues, wrote a first book and then we created the Institute.” And there could be a third leg of his think tank, based on his natural wanderlust and heritage alone? “Could we think of a third leg in Europe or in the U.K.?” he wonders. “We might.” It would seem, in this case, that his personal and professional journeys might be one and the same. It’s an exciting phase of his life, a time period that he refers to as “always exploring.” “Being alive, for me, is to explore everything imaginable during [my] life,” he says. “Traveling is incredibly exciting. You learn about yourself, you learn about others; the possibilities of what it is to be human. Traveling is really a way to open your eyes—enforcing change—and forces you to improve who you are. It’s like the journey of life itself, but it makes the journey more interesting, richer, more provocative. When you travel, you’re confronted with the other, the new, alternatives. It makes you question your own beliefs and gives you a sense of wonder because somebody else has created something that’s startling. Good or bad, but it will have an effect on you.” @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 21

See & Be Seen The cast of When They See Us on bringing the exonerated “Central Park 5”to screen

When They See Us is the most-talked-about limited-series to premiere on Netflix’s streaming channels in 2019 and arguably, ever. Created by the visionary mastermind and award-winning filmmaker, Ava DuVernay, the limited, fourpart series brings to life the infamous 1989 case, where five teenage boys of color were wrongfully convicted for the tragic rape and brutal beating of a woman jogging through Central Park. While there are other television shows and movies that tackle the topics of racial profiling, systematic errors and racism, it is DuVernay’s extraordinary vision and approach to the telling of this story that sets When They See Us apart from any other project. DuVernay has dedicated her career to bringing to light stories of minority groups, primarily those 22 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com

of the African-American community that may go untold. Famously known for award-winning projects like Selma and 13th, a Netflix documentary that sheds light on the systematic racism and racial inequalities of America’s prison system, DuVernay set out to tell the heartbreaking story of Kevin Richardson, Anton McCray, Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise and Raymond Santana, famously known as the Central Park 5. She casts a spotlight on America and its systematic injustices toward people of color. While DuVernay serves as the show’s director, writer and producer with other notable producers such as Oprah Winfrey joining the acclaimed project, it was the flawlessly casted ensemble that catapulted the Netflix series to its mega-success, including becoming the streaming platform’s most-watched series and shaking up the race for the 2019 Emmy Awards. Here, Haute Living sits down with cast members Jharrel Jerome, Chris Chalk, Jovan Adepo, Freddy Miyares and Justin Cunningham who share what it meant for them to be able to tell this story to the world and bring awareness to a case that they were not too familiar with before taking on the roles. Haute Living: When They See Us became an instant success overnight and tackles topics centered around systematic issues and racism within the prison and legal systems. What do you hope viewers get out of watching the series and learn more about the case? Jharrel Jerome: I think we’re still among modernday slavery when it comes to prisons throughout the country. There are so many prisons, so

many jails, I don’t think any of us know the exact number; it’s ridiculous. So, that kind of conversation and those kinds of ideas don’t get brought up with people my age at all. Especially on my block [the Bronx], we know the idea of making sure we don’t do anything that may get us in trouble with the police, of course, but what goes beyond that car ride to the precinct, once you do, is unheard-of and unspoken of. So, for this project to be watched by kids my age and even kids younger, I think is so important. [When They See Us] highlights the unfair and unjust legal and prison system that none of us want to end up in.

FEATURE I had to do on my part to understand the case and [Raymond Santana]. Ultimately though, the most important step for me was to open up emotionally. Ava [DuVernay] was extremely helpful throughout the whole process by being patient and supportive and encouraging me to go deeper into my own sentiments and emotions, as well as Raymond’s.

HL: Were you familiar with the “Central Park 5” case before taking on the role of Korey Wise? JJ: [A lot of people my age] aren’t familiar with it. Even being from the Bronx [myself], I did not hear of the story in-depth. It was talked about around the house and community, almost as a lesson maybe, but no, it was nothing I truly understood fully until Ava brought it to us.

HL: What depiction of young Latino actors do you wish to see more of in the industry? FM: I think it’s important for us as a country to realize that the Latino experience is so complex and we all have a different story. The complexities of our culture, what it means to be a first-generation American, to speak or not speak Spanish, the differences between growing up in Miami as opposed to New York, all make up this story. It’s all very different and therefore, there are a lot of gray areas that need to be addressed. I hope that more Latino actors watch [When They See Us] and are inspired in their pursuit to become actors because it’s an industry that sort of doesn’t support us but I think slowly the representation will be there and more stories will be told. I’m just glad I’m able to be at the forefront of that change. meet [him] was incredible. I was able to read his poetry and get a sense of how his mind worked. He’s such an intellectual, smart and inspiring individual and I truly hope everyone gets a chance to meet him one day.

HL: Was there something you learned when studying the case and getting to meet Anton McCray that you weren’t necessarily aware of before? Jovan Adepo: I think the psychological effects that being [incarcerated] has on people who are newly released into society. I have a couple of family members who have spent time incarcerated and the process of trying to rehabilitate your life and find your flow, so to speak, in life after [prison] is stressful and almost impossible. I think trying to find a job and just looking for an opportunity to show your worth and not necessarily finding that can definitely have an effect on your spirit and confidence. HL: In terms of taking on this role, what do you think was the toughest challenge? JA: In my case, Anton [McCray] is a very private person who doesn’t discuss what he went through too much. So, I had to tap into his body motions, facial expressions, and other mannerisms that allowed me to tell his story without too many words. The luxury of approaching my role in this manner allowed me to truly get to know [McCray] and understand his ability to listen, and truly grasp what is going on around him, and learn that he doesn’t waste his words on anything that’s not important. HL: It’s your first fully-realized character on camera – what has your experience been like throughout the whole process with filming When They See Us, to seeing how it is resonating with viewers? Freddy Miyares: It means the world to be involved in something this influential. I didn’t [truly understand] the impact it would have – I mean I knew it would have an impact but I did not expect it to be what it’s become. I have learned a lot throughout the whole process, from the technicalities of shooting to all of the research

HL: There are so many elements to When They See Us. What do you hope viewers learn from this story? CC: I hope everyone learns the facts. That’s certainly the main focus since, without that, you can’t truly have the dialogue and conversation that goes beyond that. Everyone is going to have a different emotional response to [the series] so whatever they take away from it, I hope they take positive action because it’s not just a movie. Unfortunately, things like this happen to people in our communities every single day and they don’t get a Netflix show to tell their story. We have to, at some point, take a stand and make sure things positively change. HL: What was it like to work with Ava [DuVernay]? Justin Cunningham: Working with [DuVernay] was one of the highlights of my career, and all-time, really. I have a pretty heavy theater background and so, she helped me along pretty vigorously throughout the whole shooting process by coming up after each take and having a conversation about what was just filmed. It allowed myself and [the other actors] to explore what it meant to be under the circumstances of [our characters.] HL: How did you prepare to take on the role of Yusef Salaam and what did you learn from him through this process? Chris Chalk: All of the information that is available to the public and all of the extensive factual research my castmates and I did to take on each of our roles, really allowed me to bring to life the technicalities of my character as well as tap into the emotional aspect of [Salaam]. KARRUECHE TRAN IS THE DEFINITION OF HARD WORK, AND SHE’S NOT SLOWING HER MOMENTUM ANYTIME SOON. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT CLAWS SEASON 3, HER PHILANTHROPIC PASSIONS, LOVE OF FASHION AND DAZZLING DIAMONDS. BY PAIGE MASTRANDREA PHOTOGRAPHY SCOTT MCDERMOTT STYLIST SAMANTHA BROWN CLOTHING KAROLINA ZMARLA SHOT ON LOCATION AT 225 WEST 17TH ST., PENTHOUSE, NEW YORK, NY 10011

Model and actress Karrueche Tran is unstoppable, and she’s charging full-speed ahead in calling the shots of her destiny. Starring on the hit show CLAWS, which just premiered its third season, to traveling the world modeling and even hosting the EMA [Environmental Media Association] Awards, it seems there’s nothing that Tran can’t do and takes on a challenge with fierce, unparalleled energy. Tran has worked her way to the top with hard work and persistence. She first dipped her feet in the industry as a personal shopper, freelancing for a celebrity stylist in Los Angeles and learning the ins and outs of the business. She eventually became the model herself, and even began designing her own clothing brand. Her acting career took off when she landed the role of Vivian Johnson on the hit web series The Bay. Now, you can find Tran co-starring in TNT’s CLAWS—a comical TV series centered around five manicurists working at a nail salon in South Florida, where she plays the fiery Virginia Loc. Boasting nine million followers on Instagram (at the time of publication), Tran has incredible influence within the digital sphere, allowing her to reach audiences all over the world and make a difference for causes she feels passionate about. And amid all the glitz, glamour, jet-setting and appearances that take up Tran’s day-to-day, she still has time to indulge in one of her greatest passions—fashion and accessories. Here, Haute Living sits down with Tran to discuss Season 3 of CLAWS, her favorite part of playing her character, hosting the EMA Awards, her love of diamonds and jewels and what the future holds for her. HL: Tell us about your role on CLAWS. How did you get the part? KT: I play Virginia, the young millennial of the crew. I auditioned for the

role as it came through my agency. I had to go through three rounds of auditions—casting, director and studio. This was my first time booking a project attached to a big network, so I was very excited and nervous. HL: What do you like best about playing your character, Virginia? KT: The best thing about playing Virginia is being able to have so much fun with her character. It’s like I get to live through this alter ego. She’s so fun, loud, bright and unique. Her outfits are the best—the less the better! She doesn’t wear pants [laughs]. I also love how complicated and layered Virginia is. She’s a product of her upbringing and the struggles she’s had to overcome. She is still growing and finding out who she wants to be as a woman, which makes her human and relatable. HL: What is your favorite aspect of the show? KT: Being able to play a badass woman on TV! In most cases, with a show like this—that’s dealt with crime, money, drugs and sex—it’s usually led by men. However, in CLAWS, we flip the script, and the women are the ones calling the shots. I also love the range of people that I meet and tell me that they watch and love the show. It proves to me that we are connecting with the world. I also love when men think it’s just a show about “nails,” and when they watch it they’re blown away and become fans. HL: Tell us about your experience hosting the EMA Awards. What was that like? KT: I was so nervous! I had never hosted an awards show before, but I ended up having so much fun! It was a great night, with a room full of amazing people. I wanted to keep the energy up and the audience engaged with me. I’ve been to awards shows where they may come across as more dull and

“SOMETIMES I CAN’T BELIEVE HOW FAR WE’VE COME. IT SEEMS LIKE JUST YESTERDAY THAT I WAS HEADED TO NEW ORLEANS TO SHOOT THE PILOT...” boring, and I wanted to make sure that didn’t happen. At the end of the show, people told me I did a great job and had such a fun time, and I couldn’t have been more proud. I told myself that I could do it, and I did it! Also, being a part of EMA is one thing I’m extremely proud of. I’m able to utilize my voice and my platform for the betterment of our world, which will hopefully get that message across to the masses. The time is now to make a change! We only have about less than 10 years to make a difference. HL: What was your favorite part of the whole experience? KT: I pitched to have a segment of the show where we engage with the youth. So, I asked my 10-year-old niece, Samira, if she could write a poem about her feelings toward the planet and sustainability. She wrote a beautiful, heartfelt poem and she did an amazing job onstage. I felt it was important to have the youth represented because they are the next generation(s) to come and need to be shown how imperative it is to protect our planet starting now [but more like yesterday]. The audience loved her! She totally stole the show. HL: What can fans expect from CLAWS Season 3? KT: I can’t give too much away, but there is a lot more drama and a few more deaths. Stay tuned! HL: How does it feel to be in your third season of the show? KT: Sometimes I can’t believe how far we’ve come. It seems like just yesterday that I was headed to New Orleans to shoot the pilot. But being in our third season, it feels great. It means people are watching and actually enjoying the show. I hope it continues to many more! HL: Do you have any collaborations in the works? KT: As of right now, no. I’ve been on the go since we wrapped season three. I’m currently [at the time of interview] at this very moment on a train from Florence to Milan for Fashion Week, which is so exciting! But once I get settled back home in Los Angeles, I want to get back into my acting classes. It’s very important for me to stay on top of my craft and continue to work hard. I work alongside some of the most talented actors on CLAWS, and it inspires me so much. I want to be as great and skilled as them. Acting class for actors is like going to the gym for athletes. You have to continue to condition yourself to become better and stronger. HL: What industry have you not yet tapped into that you’d love to become more involved with? KT: One of my dreams is to direct a music video. Ever since I was young, I’d visualize a full-on music video in my head while listening to music. It’s on my bucket list of goals that hopefully one day I’ll be able to fulfill. HL: You have a great sense of style. Tell us how you accessorize your wardrobe. KT: It all depends on my outfit of the day. If my outfit is very detailed, then I’ll do simple accessories. On the contrary, if my outfit is simple and casual, then I’ll accentuate with jewelry, hats and even bags. I think it’s all about finding the balance between it all.

HL: Tell us about a jewelry piece that you’ve purchased for yourself. KT: I recently purchased a beautiful yet simple diamond necklace. I wanted to go to someone that I knew I could trust and provide top quality, so I went to my friend Jason of Beverly Hills. HL: What was it? KT: A 5-karat white gold prong set Riviera necklace. HL: What drew you to it, and how did you feel after wearing it for the first time? KT: When I first saw it, I knew the necklace was the one, especially for my first purchase. I loved the daintiness of the necklace. It’s so delicate but still makes a statement. I felt like a queen as soon as I put it on. HL: What drove you to purchase this piece? Was it to mark an achievement or milestone? KT: I wanted to congratulate myself on working hard and staying focused. So, at the end of Season 3, I decided to spoil myself. I knew for something as special as this, only a natural diamond would do. HL: What did that piece mean to you at the time of purchase, and what does it mean to you now? KT: It was a milestone where I told myself I can finally buy myself nice things, but also remember to keep pushing myself to work harder—so I can buy more diamonds [laughs]. I’ve been gifted diamond necklaces, rings and watches before, but to make my own independent purchase is a whole different feeling. It’s something that I can cherish forever. I’ve made a great purchase that will maintain its value. And knowing that one day I can pass this necklace on to my daughter or someone in my family gives me so much joy. It makes it worth that much more. I can share this moment and my journey with others, hopefully passing down the message to always work hard. @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 27

For the grand opening of Louis Vuitton X in Beverly Hills, California, the House hosted a party alongside Chairman & CEO Michael Burke and Executive Vice President Delphine Arnault. In attendance at the immersive experiential installation were brand ambassadors and VIPs, including Alicia Vikander, Jennifer Connelly, Miranda Kerr, Jaden Smith, Millie Bobby Brown, Orlando Bloom, Laura Harrier, Riley Keough, Nina Dobrev, Jodie Turner Smith, Hailee Steinfeld, Emma Chamberlain, Tao Okamoto and The Dolan Twins, as well as the ArtyCapucines collaborative artists Urs Fischer, Nicholas Hlobo, Alex Israel, Tschabalala Self and Jonas Wood. The journey begins in Room 1, “Louis Vuitton: As Seen by…” Contemporary portrait artists Yan Pei-Ming and Alex Katz capture the beginnings of Monsieur Louis Vuitton, at a mere 16 years old in the year 1837, when he began his journey as an apprentice to a well-known layetier-emballeur (trunk maker and artisan). The journey ends in Room 10, “ArtyCapucines: Six Visions of a Contemporary Classic;” the House’s most recent collaboration with artists Alex Israel, Urs Fischer, Jonas Wood, Nicholas Hlobo, Tschabalala Self and Sam Falls, who bring to life six different iterations of the iconic Capucines bag.

In between are Rooms 2-to-9, where guests can enjoy “Origins: A Tradition of Modernity,” which explores revolutionary window displays by Gaston-Louis— Monsieur Vuitton’s grandson—as well as more recent creations, including Objets Nomades; and “The Monogram as Blank Canvas” showcasing the recreations of Monogram luggage pieces by artists like Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakami and Jeff Koons. Interactive Room 9 called “Artisans’ Room” has onsite Louis Vuitton artisans, each dedicated to a different craft, displaying their unmatched skills and craftsmanship, much to the viewers’ delight.

Additional rooms include “Reinterpreting Icons,” “Art on Silk,” “Art Meets Fashion,” “Magic Malle: The Past is Present” and “Lights, Camera, Action! Louis Vuitton on the Red Carpet,” dedicated to the beautiful dresses and gowns worn by some of the most recognizable and timeless talents in Hollywood, designed by Nicolas Ghesquière and exclusively brought together for Louis Vuitton X.

JUST AN ICON LIVING Easily one of the most recognizable and covetable prints in all of fashion, Louis Vuitton’s Classic Monogram on canvas finish was born in 1896 and has been reinterpreted and reimagined over the years. Its latest iterations by the Maison’s Artistic Director Nicolas Ghesquière give it new meaning, while maintaining its timeless elegance and its representation of the pinnacle in luxury. Shapes like the Petite Malle, the Cannes and the Petite Boite Chapeau showcase the Maison’s unique ability to reinvent heritage silhouettes with a more modern feel, making these handbags just as relevant and wearable today as they have always been, and always will be.

Haute Living‘s Haute Beauty Network kicked off its inaugural Beauty Summit, presented by Juvéderm Collection of Fillers, with a private VIP dinner at the stunning Residences by Armani/Casa Sales Gallery in Sunny Isles. The upscale evening invited some of the country’s most renowned surgeons, as well as VIP guests, to come network, educate and learn from one another about all things beauty. The group took over the setting, transforming the gallery into the picturesque, Juvéderm Mansion. The beautiful Residences by Armani/ Casa Sales Gallery played host to the evening, as Vice President of Related Group Jon Paul Pérez invited guests to get a glimpse of the up-and-coming luxury development, powered by the distinguished Armani/Casa brand in partnership with Related Group and Dezer Development. The project’s all-star team includes Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, architects Sieger Suearez, as well as Enzo Enea’s firm, ENA GmbH. The industry’s leading plastic surgeons, medical professionals, beauty aficionados and influencers gathered for a three-panel event the next day as the beauty industry’s leading professionals discussed the latest in trends, injectable fillers and more. The Juvéderm Collection of Fillers team took over the picturesque Residences by

Armani/Casa sales gallery offering attendees an interactive experience with three insightful beauty panels featuring the Juvéderm panel, a National panel and a Miami experts panel. The beauty summit also featured a Juvéderm pop-up where guests were able to partake in private consultations with some of the country’s best plastic surgeons. The beauty summit kicked off with the Juvéderm Experts panel featuring the industry’s most renowned experts including Dr. Michelle Henry, Dr. Sachin Shridharani, Dr. Christopher Surek, Dr. Alexander Blinksi, Dr. Rachel Reyes-Bergano, Dr. Anupam (Ann) Jayaram, Dr. Heidi Prather and Dr. Deanne Robinson as they discussed the latest in products, trends, the impact and importance of social media and the procedures most popular among age and gender groups throughout various parts of the country. The summit’s second panel highlighted the country’s leading plastic surgeons including Dr. Aviva Preminger, Dr. Dhaval Bhanusali, Dr. Daniel Careaga and cosmetic dentist Dr. Victoria Veytsman, as they discussed the latest in industry advancements and technologies, the most requested procedures and more. “I’ve definitely noticed a trend over the years toward more less-invasive treatments. limited a step for that, and thankfully, over the years, this has changed as devices and techniques have evolved and become more advanced,” Careaga explained. “Everything we do is primarily under two categories: fat reduction or skin technique. Noninvasive treatments that have become popular for fat removal include CoolSculpting and Emsculpt.” Dr. Preminger agreed with the increase in lessinvasive surgeries. “There’s a big trend toward less-invasive surgeries because so many people are looking for a quick fix. I also deal with breasts— as a woman, it’s fun to talk about everything that we’re able to do with them. Breast augmentation is a tried-and-true operation, and hopefully, we’re getting toward some technologies that can offer something less invasive for this result. I think other popular minimally-invasive procedures are vaginal tightening devices—these often involve radio frequency treatments. These offer great results for skin tightening.” All of the panelists agreed on the geographic differences in industry trends as well. While the South Florida market and Los Angeles market are much more open with their procedures, those in New York look for discretion. Because of this, New Yorkers tend to go more conservative when undergoing procedures, while those in South Florida and L.A. are not as conservative because there’s little to no stigma over reconstructive surgery. The insightful day of beauty finished off with the Artists of Miami Plastic Surgery as Dr. Daniel Careaga, Dr. Rian Maercks, Dr. Jhonny Salomon, Dr. Humberto Palladino and Dr. Jose RodriguezFeliz sounded off on the latest trends in hair loss prevention, mommy-makeovers, body sculpting and other cutting-edge discussions of procedures. All three panels were moderated by Marci Robin, contributing editor of Allure.

TREATMENTS FOR MEN

Hair loss can be treated with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for hair rejuvenation or a hair transplant. PRP injects the patient’s own Platelet-rich Plasma into the scalp to promote hair growth, as well as thickening of the existing hair. The hair transplant procedure quite literally transplants existing hair from the body or back of the hair to the area of concern. Another option to treat hair loss is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), a proven, minimally invasive procedure in which follicular unit grafts, consisting of a small number of hair follicles, are individually removed from the genetically stronger areas of the scalp and specifically restored to the areas that have hair thinning. Botox is a go-to treatment to address fine lines and wrinkles. Many men receive the injections in their forehead, crow’s feet area by the eyes or even palms to alleviate clammy hands and sweat. Dermal fillers are a great option to treat anti-aging, filling in wrinkles, folds, and replacing lost facial volume. Fillers are minimally invasive, convenient and long-lasting, and Dr. Ostad offers microcannulas to inject patients with dermal fillers, rather than needles. Microcannulas can be used for the lips, under eyes, nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Microcannulas are blunt instruments, requiring only one insertion into the patient, and significantly reduce patient bruising, bleeding and swelling. Microcannulas allow for less bruising, swelling, and little to no recovery time. Lasers can treats a variety of concerns, including sun damage, rosacea, wrinkles and scars including those from acne. The Cutera Genesis laser or the Cutera Excel V laser treats facial redness, visible blood vessels, broken capillaries, and other symptoms of rosacea. Laser therapy can also help prevent mild rosacea from progressing. In addition to in-office treatments, we help patients learn to identify triggers and optimize their habits to avoid flareups. The Genesis laser can also restore skin tone and treat fine lines and wrinkles, scars, large pores and active acne to boost collagen growth resulting in a more youthful skin tone and texture. This laser promotes collagen stimulation to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, shrinks oil glands to treat acne and help prevent future

Many men have personal insecurities about their skin or overall appearance, especially as they age. Here’s a curated roundup featuring a range of treatments, from non-invasive treatments to surgeries, that treat these concerns to make men feel confident.

Haute breakouts, also improves scars, rosacea and redness. The procedure takes at most 20 minutes and has a recovery time of none to 15 minutes. The Fraxel Dual or the Fraxel Co2 can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and acne scarring, both have minimal downtime and fast results! The PicoWay is best for someone who is interested in tattoo removal, targeting sun spots, or treating signs of sun damage. PicoWay is an advanced laser that uses ultra-short picosecond pulses to the skin and eliminates skin issues with no downtime. Dr. Ostad offers an innovative technique of performing a neck lift, called the anterior neck lift. His procedure eliminates scars, swelling and bruising by lifting beneath the muscle and trimming excess tissue, resulting in a younger-looking neck. Blepharoplasty is a surgical technique for eyelid revision. During this procedure, excess skin and other tissue are removed, and displaced tissue is restored to its optimal location. Using precise techniques and tiny incisions, Dr. Ostad achieves natural, youthful-looking results without noticeable scarring on the patient.

Sometimes, the battle of the bulge is not as simple as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, some people see results from just diet and exercise and some are predisposed to obesity due to genetic factors. Tumescent liposuction is a precise and minimally invasive fat removal procedure that is done under local anesthesia. Liposuction can end the frustration of fighting against genetics to contour your body. It actually removes fat cells, for permanent results. Even if you gain weight after your treatment, it will not be distributed in the same way because you will now have fewer fat cells in the treated area. Tumescent liposuction is an outpatient procedure and does not require general anesthesia allowing for shorter recovery time and less scarring. Men who are looking to tone with a non-invasive treatment can turn to CoolSculpting or CoolTone for body contouring. The innovative and noninvasive CoolSculpting technology uses temperature, rather than needles or knives, to eliminate unwanted fat, while CoolTone uses magnetic muscle stimulation technology to strengthen, tone and firm muscles.

A ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW WITH DIOR’S ENVIRONMENTAL AND SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION DIRECTOR, EDOUARD MAUVAIS-JARVIS ON THE NEW DIOR DREAMSKIN CARE & PERFECT LINE. BY DEYVANSHI MASRANI

What does your role, Environmental Director and Scientific Communication Director, at Dior, entail? It covers three different areas. It is a role of Scientific Director, coordinating the strategic decisions of our Research & Development department in order to build a consistent portfolio of innovative products for Parfums Christian Dior; a role of scientific spokesperson, coordinating the communication strategy and communicating all our innovations to the press worldwide; and a role of Environmental Director, coordinating all the initiatives of the brand to improve our e nvironmental imprint at all levels. Tell me about the Dreamskin Care & Perfect line. Dreamskin Care & Perfect is a one-of-a-kind product line, focusing on treating the skin in order to improve its healthy appearance and making it look more perfect. Who is the Dreamskin Care & Perfect woman? The Dreamskin Care & Perfect woman is in every woman! Dreamskin is a unique line that has been targeted to all women. It has no age target because it fits all age groups, it is compatible with all skin types and complexions, and it is even compatible for men [as well]! What makes the Dreamskin Care & Perfect line different from the other Dior Skincare collections? Indeed, there’s a deep connection between a healthylooking skin and the notion of perfection perceived. So, the combination of [the] two actions—caring in depth and perfecting on the surface—is the best way to answer all the expectations of women. It provides the benefits of a skincare product, plus a finishing touch that embellishes the skin surface without looking like makeup. It simply brings a healthy beauty to the surface. Therefore, it can be used as a standalone, “one-for-all” product, as it can be used as a finisher at the end of the skincare routine, or over another serum or cream. It is also an excellent make up base, making the foundation result more transparent and natural in its finish. What are the short-term and long-term benefits of the Dreamskin Care & Perfect line? The short-term benefit of Dreamskin is [its] immediate moisturizing and beautifying action. It increases the skin luminosity, blurs imperfections and enhances the healthy, rosy complexion of the skin. At the same time, it brings a deep moisturizing action that provides a lasting comfort. In the long-term, Dreamskin provides a deep transformation of the skin quality with an anti-aging focus: less wrinkles, smoother texture, a more even complexion, more radiance, [and more]. What are some of the sustainability practices that Dior is implementing across its skincare products, including Dreamskin Care & Perfect? Dreamskin comes in line with a strategy of environmental optimization of our packaging. It started with Dior Hydra Life and continued with lines such as Capture Youth, One Essential and Diorsnow…and now Dreamskin Care & Perfect. In all these products, the packaging has been made

smaller, the cardboard wedge that was inside has been removed with a c ardboard box [that is] more fitted. The leaflet has been removed and instructions are accessible online, thanks to a QR code. The cardboard used is FSC [Forest Stewardship Council] certified and we use vegetal ink for the printing. Finally, the cellophane has been removed. These initiatives now cover 51 of our references and cover 20% of our catalogue; they have saved 52 tons of cardboard (1,352 trees) and 177,000 square meters of cellophane—enough to wrap the One World Trade Center almost twice! What are the main ingredients in the Dreamskin Care & Perfect product line that provide its strongest benefits? The efficacy of the Dreamskin Care & Perfect relies on two types of actions. On the biological side, we have the Longoza and Opilia extracts, both coming from our own active ingredient development, sourced and transformed in-house, thanks to our unique floral science. They provide the anti-aging benefits. They are combined with 4% of vitamin B3 that has proven its efficiency in dermatology use. It reinforces the epidermal turnover while reinforcing antioxidant defences. The water of the formula is 100% pure spring water from the French Alps, rich in calcium and silicium that go beyond simple hydration, by stimulating the synthesis of aquaporines for more [circulation] and efficient moisturization. It is combined with a new generation Shea Butter, [which is] able to provide long-term comfort and nutrition without altering the featherlight sensation of the texture. On the surface, a patented combination of three optical particles provide the immediate skin transformation: a transparent “stained glass” pink particle enhances the healthy, rosy glow; new generation blurring siliicium particles provide optimal blurring of skin imperfections without leaving any white, ashy result; and unique, light- reflecting agents seamlessly boost the luminosity of the skin. The result is extremely natural and healthy. Which are the best Dior Skincare product lines for each age group—20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s? For women in their 20s, we have the Dior Hydra Life range to provide deep moisture. For women in their 30s, the Capture Youth line offers the best prevention. Then the new Micronutrition Serum of Dior Prestige is also a starting point [for this age group]. The 40s-to-60s will find correcting solutions in either Capture Totale or Prestige and even L’Or de Vie. And for all, we have the One Essential Serum, focusing on detoxification as a first step of any routine and of course, Dreamskin as a unique perfecting product for a finishing touch. @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING

Scents and Sensitivity

It’s scientifically proven that smell enhances all the other senses and makes living more titillating. As such, aromatic and alluring scents effortlessly elevate your home surroundings, and easily help you to create the most luxurious, multi-sensory experience possible. The scenting of one’s home has, indeed, become an art form; albeit, an effortless one. According to the prominent leader in scent marketing and branding, Aroma360, “fragrance is an accessory that’s often overlooked in the design of a home. But just as important as your choice in furniture, lighting and art work, scent adds depth and character to your home – transforming the ambiance into an inviting and relaxing oasis. As the only sense directly linked to emotions and memories, scent is perhaps the most important facet of a home’s aesthetic; bringing together all the design elements to create a complete experience for whoever walks into your home.”

64 HAUTE LIVING hauteresidence.com

The following scents will surely transform your home into an aromatic sanctuary:

SPICY WARM SCENTS Smelling the rich scent of heated spices, allows you to bask in the polished purity of any room, with music turned down low and firelight glowing.

PEPPERMINT High-end architectural elements and unbeatable views of any luxurious space are easily elevated by scenting your home with peppermint, the aroma that effortlessly boosts your mood and stimulates your mind and body with relaxed vigor.

These aromas will transform your luxury home for the better.

MOUNTAIN FRESH Those natural crisp scents of the mountains are enhanced in your living room by utilizing a scent diffuser from Aroma360 that turns that mountain freshness into aromatic luxuriousness. Can you now smell those notes of patchouli, cedarwood, musk and vanilla?

LAVENDER AND JASMINE Let’s not forget to celebrate the sweet aroma of the garden. It’s all about stopping to smell the roses, right? Maybe it should, instead, be about stopping and savoring the scents of lavender or jasmine. Lavender is well-known for its calming effects and easing insomnia. Jasmine has been shown to stimulate moods and lift spirits instantly.

CITRUS If you’re in need of a pick-me-up, try scenting your home with some citrus. The fresh smell of citrus has been shown to energize, create alertness and foster creativity. Italian lemon scents, in particular, can reduce stress and leave a positive impression on others.

ROSEMARY Primarily known as a flavor agent, rosemary has also been shown to stimulate brain power. Besides any stunning views and chic, architectural designs, having a great memory is the only prerequisite to never forgetting any elegant space.

STEFANI STEIN

Your home office is just as important as your main office. Stefani Stein shares how she creates the perfect space for her clients like actress Shay Mitchell.

66 HAUTE LIVING hauteresidence.com

HL: Before you design any type of space, what do you do for inspiration to come up with a concept? SS: Personally, I always start by getting to know the client. The beauty of working with a designer is that the finished space is created custom. I like to understand what will transpire in the space and the mood or emotion we are targeting. HL: When meeting with a client to design a home office or office setup, what is the first thing you do? SS: Whether designing for someone’s home office or for a company’s corporate headquarters, functionality is often a much more predominant part of the conversation in office design. Understanding what is going to happen in the space is one of the first steps. If working on a larger office, the schematics are typically determined very early in the process. It is important to consider the number of people in each department, the purpose of the various spaces and the flow of public vs. private areas.

Stefani Stein is a Los Angeles based interior designer & founder of August Abode. Her eponymously named firm was established in late 2014, offering full-service interior architecture & design. The firm’s approach to design embraces the idea that each client and space are unique. Regardless of the project size or scale, Stein believes that inspiring spaces evolve from the collaboration achieved by listening to both the client and the architecture. With an emphasis on supporting specialized craftspeople and workrooms, the firm’s fabricators are an integral part of the design execution. All of this steers the narrative flawlessly from concept to completion. This philosophy has led her to consistently create timeless designs in her signature relaxed & refined aesthetic. Clean, modern touches intertwine with both classical and unexpected elements throughout her projects in the bespoke commercial and residential spaces. Haute Residence caught up with Stein to ask her about how to design an office to be productive and her experience designing Pretty Little Liars’ Shay Mitchell’s office.

Haute

DESIGN

HL: Are there any trends you’re seeing across office designs and what your clients are asking for their spaces?

HL: What was it like designing Shay Mitchell’s office? What were some of your favorite things about working with her?

SS: Getting to know the nuances of a brand and how to subtly reinforce their messaging or vibe through the office design is a fun and unique creative process—one with different considerations than residential interiors. For businesses, the aesthetics of a space are also an important part of a positive work environment. More and more companies, even small ones, mention this in our discovery meetings. Throughout design, in general, there has been a resurgence of clients wanting unique and personalized spaces. Lately, many of my clients want to incorporate more color. A few years ago everyone was asking for neutral. While neutrals are a classic, clients are requesting earthy tones be paired with more unique pieces. I’ve been using a lot of sculptural or one-of-a-kind furnishings in my projects. And, great vintage in the mix is a given as well. This has also played a big role in the launch of my wallpaper brand, August Abode which includes various custom patterns and prints with a mix of florals and geometrics - perfect for a statement wall in an office!

SS: Shay wanted her space to feel feminine, but also reflective of her love of travel. Additionally, each of the members of her team had input on their individual offices. One person loved blue while another asked for anything but pink, so the process varied with each space, which made it really fun! HL: Any tips for anyone designing their own office? What are some elements to make the space most productive? SS: If designing on your own, be sure to take measurements of your office and be mindful of scale. Try taping the furniture outlines on the floor with painter’s tape before purchasing anything. You want to ensure a good balance of positive and negative space in the floor plan. Also, always prepare a mood board. Whether it’s done digitally or with physical printouts, be sure to look at everything together and have a plan. Often, you can request a textile or finish sample from retailers, which I highly recommend as well. @hauteresidence HAUTE LIVING 67

Flip it Like Disick WILLA FORD DISHES ON THE PREMIERE OF FLIP IT LIKE DISICK + INTERIOR-DESIGN HACKS BY PAIGE MASTRANDREA

PHOTOS COURTESY OF EVANS VESTAL WARD/E! ENTERTAINMENT

74 HAUTE LIVING hauteresidence.com

Willa Ford has cemented herself as one of the premier interior designers in the country. Formerly a pop star and later turned interior designer, Ford has always been fueled by her love of design. Evolving from a passion to a full-blown career, she eventually realized that this was her true calling, subsequently creating the L.A.-based WFord Interiors. Now, Ford and her team are coming to your TV screens, as she stars alongside Scott Disick (aka @letthelordbewithyou) in their new real estate and luxury-renovation series, Flip It Like Disick. The new series premiered on E! on Sunday, August 4th, followed by Khloé Kardashian‘s Revenge Body. Through the series, viewers will get to watch Willa, Scott and his team transform home projects for celebrity friends and family, as well as an astounding multimillion-dollar property remodeling in Los Angeles, which will span the duration of the season. The audience will get to learn what exactly goes into flipping a home and watch both Ford and Disick’s skills come together to create magic (and some entertaining television!). Here, Haute Living sits down with Ford to discuss what we can expect from Flip it Like Disick, how she got started in design, what it was like working with Disick on the new series and her top interior design-hacks. HL: Can you tell us how you got started working in interior-design? WF: So, it’s interesting, I’ve always had a passion for it—I think a lot of people are born with different talents whether they invest in it or not. I was living in Texas and was working with a designer on my home, and we had the best time. She was an absolute mentor to me, and she just kept saying, “You don’t really need me, you can do this,” and I think in that first moment the seed had been planted for me. I eventually moved back to Los Angeles and I was acting, but I just came to a place where I wanted to be in control and set my own destiny and not wait for somebody to tell me yes. So, I started by doing small projects for free and then went up to the next-size projects, and I can say that I was extremely fortunate that my network provided really high-end clients really fast. And before I knew it, I developed a full clientele where I needed a team of employees. It’s fulfilling me in such an amazing way. I feel like this is probably what I was supposed to be doing from the beginning. HL: How would you describe your personal design style? WF: I call my design aesthetic high-low luxe. I’m a firm believer in mixing high-ends and lows. I don’t think every little piece needs to be expensive in a home, and I also don’t think that a home is finished when everything is cheap. I enjoy being green and finding the right middle. You can invest in one special piece. You can’t invest in the whole house, but you can still make it look great by complementing expensive items with cheaper ones. Just like fashion! The home and the fashion industries are so incredibly wasteful and when you start doing the research. I think we’re finally going to move into a place of understanding. Secondhand is not a poor thing to do—it’s actually fashionably resourceful. HL: How have your travels influenced your work? WF: Incredibly. Because I was so fortunate from my pop career, I’ve stayed in some of the nicest hotels and visited some of the most beautiful countries in the world. I’ve been lucky enough to have been exposed to many different parts of the world. I think it was such an incredible influence to really just understand different cultures and how their tastes are reflected in modern design. I also think it helped me prepare for

Haute

getting to know different clientele. I love how we’re so diverse in our company as far as where our clients come from. These different cultures all affect the way they want their homes designed—what colors you can use, themes, antique elements and more. HL: Tell us about your new show, Flip it Like Disick. How did this come about? WF: I think it’s going to be an incredible show. It centers around Scott Disick, and it really shows a different side of him than what we’re all used to seeing. And we’re all there to support him. He put together a team to work with, and I serve as the interior designer. We allow the audience to get to ride this journey with us, to understand how the dynamics work with everyone coming together to work on a project like this. All of us involved are very different people, and we have some big personalities, so it leads to quite some interesting material. For me personally, it’s been amazing to get to know the other guys, and [it’s been] such a fantastic journey. Some days are better than others, some are hilarious. I’m technically trying to get the job done while also working on other projects—it’s always an interesting day. HL: What was your favorite aspect of working with Scott on this project? WF: I’ve been pushed in different ways, and I feel that with any moment of growth, it’s a good thing. He is very opinionated—he definitely has a point of view on his design, and he and I both have great design perspectives, but sometimes they’re different. And that struggle of trying to find that fire has really been interesting. So we try to merge our styles while also each bringing our expertise to the table. The goal is, of course, to keep the client happy but also to keep my design aesthetic intact because it’s my brand, as well. That’s been an interesting perspective of growth. HL: How long was the filming process? WF: The filming process took awhile, but what I love about our show is that a lot of flipping shows are flipping one house in one episode, and where we differ is we really show people that this isn’t just a “Let’s slap some paint on it,” process. I think we’re giving people an authentic look into what it really takes to flip a home of this size, and you’ll follow the journey of this one big home throughout the entire season. HL: What do you see the future of interior design looking like? WF: Two big things I’m noticing is a resurgence of minimalism in design and also recyclability. As I mentioned earlier, people will look more to secondhand products in both interior design and fashion to combat waste. But also, the future of design is going to change with the constant advance of technology. It will also change the way we design and think about design. People are going to find ways to see and design a space before anything gets done. That’s something I think will really take force within the next five years. HL: What are three interior design hacks you would recommend when flipping a home as you do in the show? WF: 1. Go really clean white in the kitchen. You can’t go wrong there. 2. If you have budget restraints, layer rugs. I love to layer a Turkish rug on top of [a] sisal to get the luxurious vibe you’re going for that takes up a lot of space but doesn’t break the bank. 3. Monochromatic materials—invest in raw materials and then add pops of color with pillows, accents and art pieces to complement the space. PHOTOS COURTESY OF ISABELLA VOSMIKOVA

+King of

Sapphire A look into the Hublot Big Bang Unico Magic Sapphire—the luxury Swiss watch manufacturer’s signature timepiece. BY MARTIN GREEN PHOTOS BY ALEX TEUSCHER

Hublot is the undisputed king of sapphire-cased watches, and for several reasons. First of all, it can create sapphire cases in different colors, such as blue and yellow. Creating sapphire cases, in general, is still not an easy task. The few brands that offer sapphire-cased watches usually only make about two dozen of them or so in a limited edition. However, these types of watches are probably the only ones that present more challenges in producing more than few. Hublot offers an entire collection of sapphire-cased watches, of which all have shapes that are complex to make. Of all its sapphire offerings, the Big Bang Unico Magic Sapphire—Hublot’s signature timepiece—offers the clearest advantage of sapphire. Hublot’s watches normally look very high-tech and avant-garde. The sapphire case of this Big Bang adds to that as it allows the wearer to see the HUB 1242 UNICO manufacture movement not only from the front and back, but also from the sides. One of the things that is immediately noticeable is the beautiful finishing on all the individual parts. Being a front-runner in the industry, Hublot opted for a more high-tech, dark colored finish, as opposed to the traditional embellishments often found on Swiss watches. This manufacture movement ticks all the boxes that connoisseurs want from a high-end chronograph, as it features a column wheel and a vertical clutch, as well as a flyback function. All this, while offering a generous power reserve of 72 hours. The beauty of sapphire goes beyond the fact that one can see straight through it; it is also light, very scratch resistant, and heats up to the wearer’s body temperature in an instant. This makes the Hublot Big Bang Unico Magic Sapphire very comfortable to wear, especially combined with the black rubber strap. This is also a nice match with the skeleton dial and the dark-colored movement underneath it. Red details add a certain dynamic to the design, but despite this, the Big Bang Unico Magic Sapphire is quite understated for what it is. Even its diameter, which is a generous 45mm, seems smaller because of the case material. All these elements combined have rightfully made this timepiece a benchmark in the field of sapphire cased watches.

+ Haute Complication Patek Philippe 5231J World Time BY MARTIN GREEN PHOTOS BY ALEX TEUSCHER

The World Time watch holds a very special position in both the history of Patek Philippe, as well as in its current collection. It is one of those watches that has become an icon, and the most desirable versions feature a Cloisonné enamel center. This year, Patek Philippe launched an addition to its collection of World Time watches with the 5231J. With a case made of yellow gold and fitted with an alligator strap in shiny chocolate brown, the 5231J is the most classic embodiment of the World Time watch currently available. Both the case material as well as the choice of strap work extremely well with the Cloisonné enamel center. People less familiar with the brand could quite easily mistaken this new model for a vintage one. Overall, it brings a lot of charm to the table. Not only because of the enamel center, which shows a planisphere impression of Africa, Europe, and the Americas, but also with small details like the chosen font for the names of the cities and the expressive hour hand. The dimensions of the 5231J are identical to the 5230, with which it also shares its movement. 38.5mm just happens to be spot on as the diameter of this watch, while the height of 10.23mm keeps it pleasantly slender as well. On the wrist, the watch looks larger. This is mainly thanks to the slim bezel and the way the dial itself is designed. Although there is a lot of information provided, it surprisingly does not look overcrowded. The 5231J is powered by caliber 240 HU, which is one of the nicest micro-rotor movements currently available. The rotor itself is crafted from 22K yellow gold and decorated with Geneva stripping, as well as the Patek Philippe logo. While the watch itself may have a vintage feel to it, with its movement is crafted with craftmanship that goes back centuries, it does have a few modern features. It is equipped with a Gyromax® balance fitted with a Spiromax® balance spring for increased precision. With all these aspects combined, the 5231J is a very tempting proposition, as it brings one of Patek Philippe’s signature complications to the table. The fact that it is combined with the Cloisonné enamel center makes it even more desirable. While current trends seem to emphasize pink and white gold, this watch shows the timeless beauty of yellow gold, making the 5231J an instant classic.

+ Behind the Legend The innovative Defy El Primero 21 by Zenith continues to prove why it is legendary in the world of watches. BY MARTIN GREEN PHOTOS BY ALEX TEUSCHER

In the world of watches, the El Primero is a legend. With its frequency of 5Hz, one can measure the passing of time with 1/10th of a second precision. While this movement is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the beauty is that Zenith never stopped with continuing to develop it further; it added many complications over the years and also improved the movement itself. With the Defy El Primero 21, Zenith fitted the movement with two escapements: one running at 5Hz and supporting the regular timekeeping of the watch; and one dedicated to the chronograph, running at 50Hz. In many ways, using two independently operating escapements is a very clever construction. It allowed Zenith to create a 1/100th of a second chronograph with an ample power reserve of 50 hours. The whole design of the watch is dedicated to showing the technical prowess of Defy El Primero 21. The watch features an open-worked dial, making the parts that make this watch so unique visible to the naked eye. Zenith highlighted the chronograph function by framing the 30-minute and 60-second counters so that they stand out and can be read with ease. Having a separate 60-second counter is not very common for a chronograph. However, in this case it is a necessity, as Zenith dedicated the central chronograph hand to display the 1/100th-second function. Seeing the hand run a full circle in just one second remains a spectacular sight.

Furthermore, it is not only the chronograph that makes the Defy El Primero 21 a real sports watch. Its case is also water-resistant up to 100 meters, which is also uncommon for a chronograph that is not necessarily designed for use in water. Zenith is offering the watch in many different varieties, and among them, this version pictured, crafted from black ceramic. It has a beautiful brushed finish, which most certainly adds to its appeal. The ceramic also has added benefits such as being scratch-resistant, very lightweight, and heating up to body temperature quickly. A large and well-designed crown, as well as easy-to-use pushers for the chronograph, make the Defy El Primero 21 one of those watches that defines how form and function go hand-in-hand.

to Debut M/Y Hybrid Bintador at Monaco Yacht Show 2019

BY DELLVIN ROSHON WILLIAMS

IT’S NO SECRET THAT THE MONACO YACHT SHOW

is the world’s No. 1 luxury yachting event. Numerous professionals from the global yachting sector descend on Monaco’s Port Hercules to get a firsthand look at the industry’s most exciting new builds, toys and gadgets. This year, boutique Italian shipyard Tankoa Yachts’ 50m S501 Hybrid Bintador makes its international debut, and it’s a real beauty. Designed by Francesco Paszkowski, Bintador takes its cue from Vertige, delivered in 2017. Vertige was the first of several yachts in the shipyard’s 50-metre series. It is powered by derated 740 kW engines with a maximum speed of 16.5 knots, a continuous cruising speed of 15 knots and a travel range of 5,000 nautical miles. Vertige’s exterior—also designed by Paszkowski—switches out a beach club for a

gym at aft to the tender bay and transom platform with a 4m-deep watersport launching pad. The difference, however, is that the S501 Hybrid Bintador is a nod to sustainable yachting. It is powered by a hybrid propulsion package offering several modes of operation. In diesel-electric mode (DEM), electric motors are fed by two variable-speed generators, allowing a speed up to 10.5 knots and a maximum range of 4,900 nautical miles with the main engines off, providing fuel and noise reduction. In hybrid mode, one of the two main engine’s shaft generates enough electrical power to run the second electric motor for propulsion. At 12 knots, the yacht will have a cruising range of 4,000 nautical miles, with two diesel generators shut down during navigation.

Haute In traditional mode, the yacht can sail at 16.5 knots using both main diesel engines for propulsion and a diesel generator feeding the hotel loads. Booster mode allows both main engines and generators to supply power to the two electric motors and feeds the hotel loads. The upper deck is designed around spacious entertainment areas for a guest’s relaxation, with a dining table and access to the sky lounge. The foredeck includes a solarium and open-air lounge, all designed to offer maximum privacy. The main deck’s cockpit comes with an oversized sun bed, U-shaped sofa, coffee tables and bar with fold-down bulwarks for more floor space and better sea views. With interiors designed by Francesco Paszkowski Design in collaboration with Margherita Casprini, Bintador fuses

light and modern tones with natural materials. It has a five-cabin layout with a main deck owner’s suite and four guest cabins on the lower deck. The owner’s galley is on the main deck and the crew galley on the lower deck. The foredeck features a touch-and-go helipad and can store up to five e-bikes. Additionally, the interiors offer a spacious saloon, dining room, galley, pantry, dayhead and a superb master suite with an office and lounge equipped with a fold-down terrace to starboard and a large window to port. In all, the S501 Hybrid Bintador is an excellent representation of Tankoa Yachts’ multicultural approach to yacht construction. It is one that merges uncompromising ethics, high-quality precision engineering and a uniquely Italian design flexibility in its DNA.

of Mind: LA COMPAGNIE’S A321NEO BUSINESS-CLASS FLIGHTS

BY DELLVIN ROSHON WILLIAMS

LA COMPA GN I E, A N A LL- BU S I N ES S - CL A S S A IR L INE

As Jean-Charles Perino, La Compagnie’s EVP and co-founder says regarding plans for the current fleet, “The second A321 will be entering the fleet in September, and we plan to retire one of our existing B757s in late September, keeping the other one. In other words, we’ll be moving from a two-aircraft to a three-aircraft airline. “This is why, not only for Parisians, but also for New Yorkers coming to Paris, the efficiency of Orly made great sense for La Compagnie,” Perino continues. “And on top of that, we could develop a self-connecting business, which is more and more important for our passenger numbers.” The A321neo is configured with 76 seats—two more than current B757s—in a 2-2 layout. The A321neo’s flatbed seats, based on the Collins Diamond design, are an upgrade from the older, angled seating found on 757s. Passengers are treated to a 15inch touch screen for in-flight entertainment, paired with noisecanceling headphones. And, to get some much-needed shut-eye on a long-haul, seven-hour commute, the flatbed comes with a mattress topper. The A321neo is powered by CFM International LEAP-1A new-generation engines and features a business-class-only cabin, offering passengers unmatched comfort. The cabin also includes high-level connectivity onboard.

operating trans-Atlantic flights between New York and France, has now entered its first A321neo into service. The A321neo is an upgrade to the company’s current fleet of B757s, offering enhanced onboard experiences, carrying more passengers and achieving greater fuel efficiency. While the French boutique airline initially reported that the A321neo would begin in June, the A321neo began ahead of schedule, operating a few flights between Paris and New York in May. Founded as DreamJet in 2013, La Compagnie was formed and run by French airline magnet Frantz Yvelin. Yvelin enlisted the support of several multimillionaire friends in the hopes of making a low-cost, all-business class airline that offered business-class fares at a significantly lower rate than that of other commercial carriers. La Compagnie’s A321neo entry into service comes just as the company switches business-class flights from Charles de Gaulle-New York to Paris Orly-Newark. Known for its remarkable operational efficiency, comfort, style and range, the A321neo is a new-generation, single-aisle aircraft that allows the Paris-based carrier to take advantage of greater fuel efficiency and lower operating costs on its trans-Atlantic New York-Paris route.

BEST WELLNESS +THE RESORTS IN THE WORLD The most luxurious global retreats for health and well-being BY LAURA SCHREFFLER

ANANDA IN THE HIMALAYAS BEST FOR: YOGA If there is one takeaway from spending time at Ananda (and there are many) it would be its location—adjacent to Rishikesh, the birthplace of yoga, along the sacred Ganges River, at the foothills of the Himalayas. As such, Ananda is one of—if not the most— authentic wellness destinations in the world for a comprehensive Ayurveda, yoga and Vedanta experience... with a dash of Western comfort sprinkled in. There are 10 dedicated programs available (as well as customized offerings), all of which start with an Ayurvedic consultation to determine your dosha. As expected, there are Ayurvedic elements in everything Ananda offers, but for sheer authenticity purposes, you might want to consider trying the Ayurvedic Rejuvenation or—naturally—the Yoga Program. While staying on a 100-acre Maharaja’s Palace Estate dotted with peacocks and monkeys, guests will experience treatments such as Shirodhara (lukewarm herbal oil poured on your third eye), Abhyanga (a traditional synchronized full-body massage), Pizhichil (an Ayurvedic oil bath) and Choornaswedena (a massage using herbal poultices); beauty treatments and a controlled dosha-specific diet are also part of the experience. The spa treatments are sensational, but to embrace the ethos of Ananda, guests should seek inner peace, whether it be through practices like Trataka (gazing on a candle flame), yoga or even a round of golf on the resort’s course, if that’s your particular way of disconnecting. Regardless of what your goal is or what program you choose, we have no doubt that you’ll leave this Indian palace feeling rejuvenated, recharged and ready to embrace everyday life again with fresh eyes, peace in your heart and a spring in your step. You just need to surrender to the spirit of Ananda. Namaste. The Palace Estate, Narendra Nagar, Uttarakhand 249175, India

Pilates, yoga, qigong, tai chi, meditation and Pranayama are some of the reconnecting classes on offer at Kamalaya.

KAMALAYA KOH SAMUI BEST FOR: DISCONNECTING AND RECONNECTING

At Kamalaya, located in the tropical paradise of Koh Samui, Thailand, expect magic to happen. Within a week of arriving at this world-famous wellness retreat, a brand-new you will appear—someone who’s healthier, happier and ready to face the world with strength and a smile. Like a caterpillar, you’ll shed your stress in this tranquil, self-contained wellness jungle by disconnecting from the outside world before transforming into the proverbial relaxed and refreshed butterfly. Cell phone use is limited to in-room use only, and for just an hour a day at that. This imposed digital detox not only forces you to interact with others―there’s even a community dining table for those who really seek connection―but it allows you to be more present, mindful and aware. Guests return year after year in search of the inner peace they inevitably find here, through week-long detox journeys, sleep retreats, weight-loss programs, fitness forays and stress and burnout expeditions, among others. Regardless of what you choose, the beauty here is that you’ll find something you might not be aware you even needed. Those looking to get fit might find mindfulness through exercise, while someone on a sleep retreat might discover the root cause of their sleepless nights—and find out how to conquer it. Each day, guests get into a routine, gliding to and from the two on-site restaurants (both of which offer healthy, anti-inflammatory fare); lying poolside or on the private white sand beach; partaking of holistic remedies in the realms of Ayurveda, naturopathy and traditional Chinese medicine with treatments such as craniosacral therapy, sound healing, Reiki and spiritual healing at Kamalaya’s spa; and to the fitness center and yoga pavilion for daily Pilates, yoga, qigong, tai chi, meditation and fitness classes— bringing together diverse traditions of healing, culture and spirituality in a nurturing environment. At its heart is a cave, once used by Buddhist monks as a place of meditative retreat. The cave was, in fact, the reason that founder John Stewart, an American-born former monk, chose to open Kamalaya in this location in the first place. It’s fitting that Kamalaya—which translates as Lotus (Kamal) Realm (alaya) in the ancient language of Sanskrit— symbolizes the unfolding of the human spirit. That is its real power, if only you allow yourself to really leave your cocoon and embrace the inevitable change that will lead to a more beautiful you.

If Aro Hā’s location reminds you of Middle Earth, it actually should: Peter Jackson filmed his Hobbit trilogy here.

ARO HĀ BEST FOR: RADICAL CHANGE When you’re really and truly ready for a radical change, wouldn’t you go to the ends of the Earth to get it? If so, then book your first-class Air New Zealand flight to Queenstown—which, for most Americans, not only feels like the end of the Earth, but also, quite aptly, Middle Earth—Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy was filmed here, after all. When you finally arrive in the Tolkien-esque Glenorchy—35 minutes from Queenstown in New Zealand’s majestic Southern Alps—a sense of serenity will steal your breath away and possibly even bring you to tears. It’s as if the very landscape is saying, “Let the healing begin.” But know this: You’ll have to work for it. The au naturel Aro Hā —which is run almost entirely on solar and hydro energy—forces you out of your comfort zone, starting from sunrise Vinyasa flow yoga in an airy, light-filled studio with panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu, straight to a fatiguing sub-Alpine hike. Later in the day, you’ll get your fitness on again with TRX or Pilates. (Don’t worry, though: Restorative spa treatments are part of the program, too.) Caffeine is not available (tough love, baby!) and meals consist of hand-picked produce from the on-site organic garden, used to create predominantly plant-based and gluten-free fare. And if you were planning on a solitary exploration of self, that’s not going to happen, either: Aro Hā is all about human connection, which is why there are no more than 16 guests at a time. You’ll share an eco-chic common space with one other and are encouraged to get to know your neighbors. While interaction is strongly encouraged, it isn’t mandatory, so if bonding isn’t in your comfort wheelhouse, you can skip it (though we suspect that by week’s end, Damian Chaparro of L.A.’s The Ashram has brought his SoCal yogi sensibility to the Southern Hemisphere in a wonderful way, urging guests to test themselves mentally and physically, to be the change they want to see in themselves. In the te reo language, “Aro Hā” means “in the presence of divine breath,” and you’ll truly find that here—you just have to remember to stop holding it and let go. 33 Station Valley Road, Wyuna, Glenorchy 9350, New Zealand 100 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com

Get your ch’i—or “life force” energy—in balance by meeting with a naturopathic doctor upon arrival, who will prescribe a customized program of energy treatments to get your mind, body and soul back in alignment. These include Tuina massages, reflexology, moxibustion and acupuncture, as well as re-balancing activities like qigong and meridian stretching, all of which have been developed by associating the principles of classical Chinese medicine with Western techniques, which aim to reactivate the energy channels. The postcard-perfect resort—which overlooks Lago di Garda from a sub-Mediterranean perch liberally dotted with olive trees—will also help you reset. Whether you’re quietly gazing at the horizon from the majestic infinity pool or pounding the pavement outside on a running circuit, outside stresses will be sure to melt away. There are five saunas—including one made of olive tree wood—a hammam, heated whirlpool and thalassotherapy pool “La Luna nel Lago” where you’ll happily float in a cave-like environment; an ice pool and ice fountain; and—for those who relax in a different way—a top-notch fitness center. But Lefay’s most unique selling point, in our opinion, is its energy garden. Each of the five areas represents a different direction, season and period of life. Whether you’re practicing Tai Qi e Qigong in the southern-facing Red Phoenix—representing the culmination of energy, the summer, noon—or doing Yoga e Qigong in the western White Tiger—the start of gathering and meditation, autumn and sunset—we have no doubt you’ll walk away at peace.

+Major #FoodGoals A one-on-one interview with Majorodmo’s Executive Chef, Jude Parra-Sickels.

Upon its arrival into Los Angeles, Majordomo quickly became one of the city’s hotspots, bringing out the most discerning of Hollywood foodies. The restaurant is one of Chef and Founder David Chang’s latest ventures in the restaurant world, who rose to global culinary fame being the mastermind behind one of the most coveted names in Asian-American cuisine: Momofuku. With restaurants in key global cities like New York, Toronto and Sydney, Majordomo is certainly rising in the ranks as one of the most popular, with mouthwatering dishes like the Cave Aged Butter & White Sturgeon Caviar, the Uni & Tofu, the Bounty Bowl, the Whole Steamed Rockfish and the Crispy Pork Belly. But it is of course, the two special, standout dishes that seem to get the most attention—namely on the restaurant’s tagged photo page on its Instagram account—the Boneless Chuck Short Rib braised with Asian pear and daikon, served with rice cakes, sweet potato and raclette; and the Whole Plate Short Rib, smoked bone-in APL-style ribs, served with beef rice, shiso, rice paper, ssämjang and condiments, for which you must inquire 24 hours in advance to confirm availability. If you haven’t been able to score a table (or even a seat) at Majordomo yet, don’t fret! The restaurant has recently launched its weekend lunch program, with an equally delectable lineup of dishes, which includes Grilled Whole Stripe Bass, Grilled Dduk Galbi, and a fan favorite, Fried Chicken with pickles, bing rolls and condiments. So who brings these tantalizing tastes to life? None other than Executive Chef Jude Parra-Sickels. Here, we sit with Parra-Sickels to discuss the restaurant, the culinary experience he hopes to provide, and the Los Angeles food scene as a whole.

Tell me about Majordomo, in your own words. It’s a place where we want people to feel right at home, but also know that they are going to be surprised at every turn. You’ve had an impressive amount of experience at restaurants A-Frame, POT and The Cannibal. How did all of that experience help you at Majordomo? I established a close connection to the dining scene here in LA working for Roy. He is so interwoven into the fabric of LA and I gained a solid understanding of how people like to eat here, what works and what doesn’t work. On the other hand, The Cannibal gave me the opportunity to be a part of an out-of-town group learning to adjust an existing concept to a new audience. Ultimately both experiences were equally important to my work at Majordomo, a place that has roots in NY while being dedicated to reflecting its location and the people that eat here. What kind of dining and culinary experience do you hope to provide to the Majordomo guest? We focus on making delicious food inspired by the varying people and cultures found in LA, and we bring these ideas together to create something that is both familiar and new. We also always work to highlight and utilize local seasonal product that shows the bounty of California. What are some of your favorite dishes to make on the menu and why? I love our tapioca lo mein tossed with garlic, chili oil, greens and topped with fried krill. On the menu since opening, it is inspired by a Cantonese dish with humble roots. It is a very simple dish and when it’s executed correctly it really sings and is absolutely delicious. But because it is so simple, if it’s off in the slightest, it becomes mediocre quickly. Precision is required with simplicity and it’s a great challenge for our cooks. What is it about the LA culinary scene that makes it so special? There are endless options for delicious and affordable food and I love that people out here seem to crave and seek out genuine food experiences.

SOPHISTICATED

JERSEY RESIDEnCE Our client, a young, up and coming professional, wanted his new home to be a sophisticated space he could relax in. We created this idea using fun elements including funky patterns, custom artwork and rugs, unique wall coverings, and the integration of animal accessories. You will find them throughout the whole home. It gives the home a young and joyous energy. Yet no two rooms are alike, giving our client a diverse space to experience. Within the overall home, we designed several pieces of custom furniture, including the bed and headboard in the Master Bedroom. The Master Bedroom is draped with a cozy wool wall covering, instantly making the space feel warm and inviting. The living room reads more neutral due to the hand made wall covering which gives a sense of plaster throughout. When it came to the office, our client desired a space he and his fiancĂŠ could both work out of, yet have room to display their collections that we helped to curate. With that in mind, we designed a custom built desk with a durable granite stone that has integrated power / USB outlets. The custom shelves above can be used for their revolving collection, which they can change and curate over time. This is all centered by a luxurious leather wall covering. The special wall treatments continue in the guest room with a bold wall to accent the metal details and showcase the views of Manhattan.
