TYRESE GIBSON IS STARTING HIS NEXT CHAPTER IN A NEW PLACE — BUT HE’LL ALWAYS HAVE HIS FAST & FURIOUS FAMILY. BY LAURA SCHREFFLER PHOTOGRAPHY MYPARADISEPHOTO.COM SHOT ON LOCATION AT THE SHORE CLUB RESORT, TURKS & CAICOS

When I speak to Tyrese Gibson for the first time in 2020, pre-pandemic, he is — quite appropriately — in his car. He is not driving fast or furiously, but he is another F word: frustrated. The man is lost. “I didn’t even know this part of California existed!” he declares. “I don’t even know where we are right now. I have literally never been here, and I grew up in L.A. It’s ridiculous!” Given that Gibson has been traveling to unfamiliar places for the past 17 years (not counting 2020, because one’s home cannot be considered unfamiliar by any stretch of the imagination), getting lost in the Valley shouldn’t faze him. And it doesn’t, for long. Since signing on to play fast-talking former convict Roman Pearce in 2003’s 2 Fast 2 Furious, the Watts native has traveled to Miami, Rio de Janeiro, the Canary Islands, Glasgow, Tokyo, Rome, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Iceland, Havana and Edinburgh. In the upcoming 10th film, F9: The Fast Saga — his sixth in the franchise — those exotic filming locations have expanded to include London; Tbilisi, Georgia; and Krabi, Ko Pha-ngan and Phuket, Thailand. But it isn’t just a change of scenery that has the now 42-year-old actor ready and willing to return for more films. “We’ve been doing this for so long, it’s hard to think, ‘How could this possibly feel brand-new again?’ And yet every Fast & Furious feels brand-new. Let me put it this way: If you ever got married, your marriage would feel a lot like The Fast & the Furious.” Variety is the spice of life, or so it’s been said, and that’s especially true for Gibson. “I imagine being on a soundstage at Warner Brothers with the same parking spot for 15 years. If that were me, I’d be like a hamster ramming my head into the damn wall,” he says. There’s certainly been a lot of change within the Universal Pictures franchise since producer Neal H. Moritz and director Rob Cohen turned a short Vibe magazine article about the undercover street racing circuit in New York City into the box office juggernaut it is today. To date, the Fast & Furious films have grossed $5.31 billion at the worldwide box office. Yet not all of those changes have been good. The franchise’s star, Paul Walker, was killed in a 2013 car accident, and longtime director Justin Lin left to pursue other projects that same year. The cast was also blindsided when Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham were given their own spin-off — 2019’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw — which initially pushed F9’s release by a full year (which, in hindsight, doesn’t seem all that bad, considering that the film has now been pushed more than three times due to the pandemic 16 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com

— its latest opening date being June 25 — in a bid to make sure it had a proper theater release). Gibson was very vocal in his displeasure about Johnson’s decision to prioritize the spin-off over F9, but finally having the Fast & Furious family’s “Phil Jackson,” Justin Lin, back made the perceived slight more bearable. And with a global pandemic happening, well, he had to let some sleeping dogs lie. (He shared back in December that he and Johnson have since “peaced up.”) “We were trying to wrap our heads around this new energy,” he says now. “But with [Justin back], there was a reassurance, a comfortability, a confidence that set in for all of us. I don’t believe that any other director could have come back to the Fast & Furious after all of the controversy with the spin-off and make sense of it. He not only figured out a way to shoot a movie but a way to make us fired up, focused, energized, engaged and ready to forge ahead. He’s literally the Phil Jackson, the f---ing Mr. Miyagi, the sensei. He’s the real, true driver of this franchise.” Lin, according to Gibson, is steering the franchise in a brilliant new direction. Picking up where 2017’s The Fate of the Furious left off, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family face a new, deadlier enemy that’s uncomfortably close to home — Dominic’s younger brother, Jakob (franchise newcomer John Cena), who is working with their old enemy, Cipher (Charlize Theron). And although Dom — who temporarily joined forces with Cipher in the previous film — has since reunited with his friends, he and Roman are still having problems in F9. “They’ve got me going at Vin. Roman and Dominic Toretto are going at it in this movie, and you have not seen that dynamic ever before,” Gibson says. The sparring, interestingly, was Diesel’s idea, but Gibson was fully on board, especially because in F9, fans will be seeing a whole new side of Roman. “We said, ‘We have to figure out a way to hit the reset button with Roman.’ The question was, ‘When are we going to see Roman getting serious and intense about something?’ There was a conversation we had about needing to see Roman more serious, more dramatic, more intense, about how to back away from that level of energy that he usually brings. We decided to play up the straight drama this time. That’s the direction we decided to go in, so Roman has changed in this movie.” In addition to seeing Roman’s sensitive side, fans are going to meet a slew of new faces in F9, including characters played by Cardi B and Cena. The latter in particular had some big shoes to fill: Johnson’s larger-than-life size fourteens. “Being a wrestler stepping into the wake of the Rock, who also happens to be a wrestler heavily associated with these films, I’m sure he felt a level of anxiety, like, ‘How do I bring my own thing, my own energy, my own acting chops to this franchise?’” Gibson says, noting, “Through the comfortability that we created for him on set, he was able to carve out his own niche and his vibe, and he overdelivered.” That comfort is a key component of what makes the Fast & Furious machine work. This crew truly is a family — which newcomers don’t always realize until they’re part of it. “The Rock, Nathalie Emmanuel, Charlize Theron, they will all tell you that the lunches, the dinners, the energy, the private moments, the celebrations, are nonstop. Now, if you didn’t know what we know about the family, you’d be like, ‘This can’t be real. All of this love and energy is all fake, it’s all Hollywood.’ But then it doesn’t stop, and you realize, ‘This is real.’ John Cena walked away and was like, ‘Yo! Holy shit! This is a vibe!’” The cast went above and beyond for this film — partly, it seems, to fill the hole the Rock had left, and partly because of Lin’s reemergence. One night in particular stands out, Gibson recalls, when Diesel, Lin and Michelle Rodriguez all jointly celebrated birthdays during filming. “There were like 20 people sitting around at this long dinner table, and

everyone’s standing up giving speeches about how we feel about each other. Everything was beautiful,” he says. To be a part of the Fast crew is to be a family in every sense of the word. They stay in touch as much as possible regularly, and during the height of Covid, via a nonstop texting stream. To this day, they still do everything they can to honor Walker’s memory on each shoot and are all close to his family. In fact, Gibson tells me he was on the phone with Walker’s daughter, Meadow, as recently as the day before our interview. And the entire Walker clan made its way to the London set during the filming of F9. “When you get to the set and you see Paul’s daughter there, and his brother Cody, too, it gives you a level of reassurance to proceed, of knowing you’re on the right path,” Gibson says. “It gives you all the confidence in the world.” It seems that Universal has the same confidence in the franchise, given that this film was pushed back several times to accommodate a theater release. “We might have one of the only movies coming out this year that’s not going to theaters and then directly to a streaming platform,” Gibson says. “It’s really interesting to carry that torch. I’m proud of that, and proud that the studio has this confidence that F9 is going to inspire a lot of people to go back to theaters — the hundreds of millions of people that got vaccinated, including me.”

ife has changed for Gibson a lot in the last year. In the span of 12 months, he got divorced, started dating again and is preparing to make one of the biggest moves of his life: he’s officially leaving L.A. It wasn’t an easy decision. He was born and raised in Watts, a neighborhood in southern Los Angeles, after all. His kids have always lived in Woodland Hills, where he settled into family life with social worker Samantha Lee Schwalenberg, his now ex-wife, for the past four years. He has so many memories here in this house in particular, that extend to his career, his Fast & Furious path, his history, that sometimes he wonders if it’s the right thing to do. But it’s time to move on. “I just put my house in L.A. on the market, and I think I’m having seller’s remorse,” he admits during our second discussion — exactly 13 months after the first — in May via Zoom. “I was born and raised in L.A. but [right now] I’m in Atlanta; I’m here, it’s real. I’ve been living here for four years [while working on the Furious films], and I’ve been struggling with [traveling] cross-country and going back and forth. I finally just said, ‘Yes, put the house up for sale.’ I’m at a place where I’m like, ‘You know what? It’s time.’ But now I’m getting phone calls like, ‘Does the house come with the [teppanyaki grills from Benihana] or are you taking them with you? Does the house come with [its gigantic statue of Transformers autobot] Bumblebee?’ Every time somebody asks me a question about what comes with the house, I don’t want to sell it. I’ve had so many legendary moments at that house over the last few years. John Singleton, Michael Bay, all of the directors from Fast & Furious, Vin Diesel [have all come through]. There are just so many moments. And the crazy thing is, I thought I was going to put it on the market and feel good about it, and I don’t feel good. But I have to let it go.” His Atlanta abode is great, but it doesn’t have the history or the joie de vivre of his legendary five-bedroom mansion (with its own waterfall, no less) in the San Fernando Valley. In L.A., it was a nonstop party — one that his neighbors would never call him out on, because @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 19

they would be right there with him. But the well-heeled residents of Buckhead are less likely to enjoy his shenanigans. “I’m living in a neighborhood where [people] are not okay with me bringing the party life,” he says. “I mean, my neighbors party with me in L.A. All of these cars taking over all of the streets, we’re going big, the shrimp is flying, fire hat tricks; they don’t call the police on me. It’s going to take me a long time to get folks here used to the parties that I do, and I don’t think they’re interested in getting used to it over here in this city. If I felt like it was a continuation of the parties and Benihanas and just all the magic, it would be different.” When I wonder if he’s really sure about leaving the City of Angels, he swears he is, and this is why: “I think the biggest deciding factor for me was my daughter [Shayla, from his first marriage to Norma Mitchell] is a teenager now, and she’s just so independent and selfsufficient, and kind of the days of Daddy being there every day, every step of the way [are gone]. ‘Dad, I’m going to a friend’s house. Dad, I’m going to a pool party. Relax.’ Even that’s kind of encouraged me to make this move.” And it’s been nice, being able to raise his two daughters in a beautiful home — and being able to be a hands-on dad, especially while promoting a film as big as F9. Typically he’d be stuck in a plethora of junkets and interviews, sipping water around a hotel’s round table. Here, he can do everything from his office, by Zoom. “There is a luxury to this,” he admits. “You know, I’ve been in the business for over 20 years now — even though I feel like I’m 17 years old — and it’s crazy to be able to say you’ve got 20 interviews and you don’t have to leave the house. I get to take bathroom breaks, I get to go kiss and check up on my 2-year-old [Soraya, his daughter with Schwalenberg]. It almost makes me want to build a movie studio in my backyard, like, ‘Well, let’s just keep this shit going! Does anybody want to bring that camera crew over here? Let’s rock this thing from the backyard. Let’s go.’” Although he seems to have the work-life balance thing all figured out, not to mention the pandemic-era career, Gibson acknowledges that he hasn’t had it easy. His personal life has suffered, after all. A year ago, he was double-dating with his wife and Idris Elba; now, he’s divorced. It’s certainly a different life than the one he was living. “It’s been crazy, trying to figure out a way to live in this new world,” he confesses. “It’s hard to accept it, but it’s a brand-new reality. Parenting is different, promoting movies is different, movie sets are different, TV shows are different. Cohabitating with costars and directors, that’s different. Everything is different.” But make no mistake: different does not necessarily mean bad, and even though he’s hell-bent on giving up his place in L.A., he is not saying sayonara to his Hollywood career. His aforementioned 20-year 20 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com

résumé includes the Fast & Furious films, the Transformers franchise, two New York Times best-selling books, a comic book, eight successful albums and forays into screenwriting, modeling and DJing. Coming up, he has several films in the bag, including Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off; Morbius, part of a three-picture deal he made with the studio; the thriller Rogue Hostage, alongside John Malkovich; and the action film Dangerous, with Mel Gibson and his homie (and current houseguest, who pops into our Zoom chat to say hi) Scott Eastwood. The difference is that now he has more time to focus on things outside the Hollywood sphere. “I’m definitely a serial entrepreneur,” he says. “I’m going to be announcing a lot of amazing things in the coming months, a lot of opportunities that have presented themselves. And I’m not competing with anybody. I’m just saying, there’s a little slice of this pecan pie [here in Atlanta], and I’m in on it.” Some of those ventures include Voltron Studios, which he likens to Universal Hollywood — a movie studio with soundstages, production offices, hotels, restaurants and retail. And coronavirus be damned, he’s heading to both the Middle East and China to take the necessary meetings that might result in collateral. Dreams don’t come cheap, after all, and he just needs one other person who believes in them as strongly as he does to make his a reality. He has more vision boards than he can count, and an actual video he’s produced that lays out exactly what Voltron looks like. He’s prepared. “That’s the main focus of my life,” he says. “I’m a dreamer, but I dream with my eyes open. I want to become the things I see. My desire is to be a fully functioning, successful entrepreneur who is running a business that’s affecting and shifting our world. Obviously, I still want to act, but that’s not why I lose sleep at night.” He says that he tosses and turns because his ideas are so big, they’re literally ready to pop out of his head. But then, he’s always been a dreamer. It’s how he’s managed to not only come so far, but when his life hit a snag, pick himself up again. “When I was in South Central L.A. living in the ghetto and I was homeless at a certain point, I just wanted to know what it was like to have over $100 in my pocket at one time,” he says. “What it was like to get on airplane, to leave L.A. and go to a different state or a different country. I’ve been able to do all of these different things. I’ve gotten to live a life with penthouse suites, mansions, Hollywood parties; I’ve gotten to go to the Grammy Awards and work with some of the biggest movie stars in the world. But who I am at my heart is a little Black boy from the inner city who woke up one day and decided that there had to be better things out there than I was born into and had to live in throughout my childhood. I’m not perfect — I’m just grateful.” And the truth is, he’ll carry that gratefulness with him no matter

+Yellow Magic Hublot makes more magic happen. BY MARTIN GREEN

Magic, Hublot has proven that it can produce this primary color in ceramic, a challenging material: it’s made at very high temperatures, and most pigments tend to burn up. That’s why, for decades, ceramic watches generally only came in white and black. Hublot was the first to introduce brighter colors, in 2018, thanks to a newly developed process to create ceramics under pressure at lower temperatures. The Big Bang Unico Yellow Magic showcases Hublot’s patented technology well. The vibrant yellow looks even more intense thanks to contrasting black details. With a diameter of 42mm, the watch is well proportioned, and thanks to the rubber strap with titanium and black ceramic folding clasp, the wearing comfort second to none. While the yellow is quite a powerful color, Hublot has been able to incorporate it generously in the Big Bang Unico Yellow Magic without making it too much of a good thing, thanks to the dial and black middle section, crown, and chronograph pushers, which do a wonderful job of bringing the design altogether. The Big Bang Unico Yellow Magic is powered by caliber HUB 1280, a self-winding movement with a power reserve of 72 hours, made in Hublot’s own manufacture. It features a flyback chronograph, which is controlled by a column wheel. This is visible through the skeletonized dial and adds to the industrial, high-end look of the watch. Hublot will make 250 pieces of the model.

Richard Mille RM 40-01 McLaren Speedtail: a partnership goes full speed ahead.

EVEN AMONG MCLAREN’S IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION,

the Speedtail is in a class of its own. It redefined the term supercar, and with a breathtaking 250 mph top speed, it is the fastest car McLaren ever built. It is also one of the most spectacular, its aerodynamic profile stunning from every angle. There are many similarities between McLaren and Richard Mille, the two brands that have been partners for over a decade, and they prove this once again with the new RM 40-01 Automatic Tourbillon McLaren Speedtail. This watch was designed simultaneously with the car, making it far more than just a tribute to this incredible machine but a piece of art in its own right. Most unique is the shape of the case, which resembles that of the car. McLaren invested no less than 2,800 hours in getting its teardrop shape just right. To up the game even more, the RM 40-01 Automatic Tourbillon

McLaren Speedtail features a finishing at a higher level than Richard Mille has ever done before. The highly complex sapphire crystal on this watch costs 15 to 20 times more to make than those on other Richard Mille models. To fit the unique case, a new movement had to be developed as well. Caliber CRMT4 consists of 603 parts and is based on Richard Mille’s in-house automatic caliber. It features an oscillating weight made from platinum and red gold, resembling the hood of the McLaren Speedtail, as well as a tourbillon. In terms of complications, it is fitted with a power reserve indicator and an oversize date. Thanks to its organic shape, integrated strap, and a case made from Grade 5 titanium and Carbon TPT, the wearing comfort is exceptional and offers no distraction when you take the McLaren Speedtail to its top speed.

watchmaking with disruptive creations at Watches & Wonders 2021. These pieces not only show the brand’s’expertise and craftsmanship, but also its future-minded nature and eye for tantalizing design, continuing to push the boundaries of the company and also watchmaking as a whole. Existing connoisseurs are served, as well as a new generation of watch collectors. With the Blast Hourstriker, Ulysse Nardin has created the Hourstriker Phantom’s successor while integrating it into the highly successful Blast collection that launched last year. The key elements of this watch are its beauty and technical complexity, but especially the sound. Ulysse Nardin teamed up with audio tech company Devialet and achieved an astonishing 85 dB, thanks to the use of a titanium membrane. The mechanism that controls the striking features of this watch is visible on the dial side, as is the flying tourbillon. The 45mm case is crafted from red gold combined with black DLC titanium, which makes the watch look striking. With the Diver X Skeleton, Ulysse Nardin has merged elements from two of its most impactful collections into a single watch. The result is a diving watch unlike any other, as they are rarely fitted with skeletonized movements. The case combines blue PVD with charismatic blue carbonium, a carbon composite with a unique texture decorating the diving bezel. The “X” dominates the dial in two colors, blue with orange accents. Behind it sits caliber UN-372, a skeletonized automatic movement in which extensive use of silicon parts makes it truly the mechanical movement of the future. The power reserve is extensive, measuring 96 hours. The Diver X Skeleton is available with either a blue or an orange rubber strap and is limited to 175 pieces, marking the 175th anniversary of the brand, which is being celebrated this year. With its new UFO table clock, Ulysse Nardin is also conquering the sky. It teamed up with Maison L’Epée, which has been manufacturing traditional clocks since 1839. With an aluminum base and handblown glass dome, the clock is a unique object that shows it all. Its movement consists of no less than 675 components that allow it to show three time zones at once. At the top is extra-large oscillator, 49mm in diameter, crowned by the Ulysse Nardin logo. Thanks to six mainspring barrels, the clock’s manual wind movement has a power reserve of a year, as can be seen on the indicator placed inside the movement. It is another daring way in which Ulysse Nardin shows its significant expertise and knack for creating items representing the future of timepieces.

AND + PRESSURE PASSION Jimmy Butler teams up with TAG Heuer. BY MARTIN GREEN

PHOTOS COURTESY OF TAG HEUER

JIMMY BUTLER IS A MAN WHO NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION.

The highly successful basketball player started his professional career with the Chicago Bulls and now plays in the small forward position for Miami Heat. In his first year with the Heat, he was instrumental in the team reaching the 2020 NBA Finals. As a five-time NBA All-Star, three-time All-NBA Team honoree and four-time NBA All-Defensive Team honoree, he knows how to impress in any situation. For him, a watch is an important part of his personal style, so he has joined forces with TAG Heuer, wearing their watches on and off the court. “TAG Heuer and I share a common DNA of mental strength, passion and performance,” Butler says. “What excites me most about being their new brand ambassador is that they see something in me. I’m glad that they feel that I’m the right person to do the job. TAG Heuer believes in me, and I’m giving them everything I got.” On the court, his wrist will be graced by the TAG Heuer Connected. This innovative smartwatch combines good looks with great ergonomics and a wide array of features. Its active screen is protected by a sapphire crystal, surrounded by a bezel made from ceramic. The watch itself features a GPS, compass, accelerometer, gyroscope and heart rate monitor, which makes it perfect for Butler to keep track of his performance and helps him take it to an even higher level. Butler reveals how the brand’s “Don’t Crack Under Pressure” concept relates to him: “I love pressure. Around here,

we say pressure makes diamonds or pressure bursts pipes. Everything we do is to make sure we’re making diamonds out of that pressure. Every single day we’re putting the work in to make sure I’m in the best shape physically and mentally, and that I’m prepared for anything thrown at me on the court. I love pressure — it shows who you are.” Off court, it immediately becomes clear why Butler is also considered an international style icon. His personal taste is of an exceptionally high standard, and everything he wears, he does with a natural flair. The same goes for his TAG Heuer Carrera. A true watch aficionado, Butler didn’t pick just any Carrera to wear but opted for the limited edition, made to mark the 88th birthday of founder Jack Heuer. This 42mm watch is crafted from pink gold and powered by the brand’s’in-house chronograph caliber Heuer 02. With its silver dial and contrasting black subdials, it superbly compliments Butler’s original style. The new TAG Heuer ambassador says he has a special relationship with time. “As an athlete, time means everything, because you never get it back. I’m ten years in the game now, and I look back on when I was a rookie and think, ‘Wow, what a time.’ I remember everything like it was yesterday. In my personal life, time means everything all the same. I spend so much time with my family, with my guys, we do everything together, and we record it all because we want to be able to go back in time and remember what happened at a specific moment.” @hautetime HAUTE LIVING 35

Haute THE MODIFIED CONTINENTAL GT3 RACER, BASED ON

Bentley’s race- and championship-winning car, will power its way through the 12.42-mile course running on biofuel-based gasoline at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Bentley’s ambitious and transformational Beyond100 program will see the brand become the world’s leading sustainable luxury mobility company. As a part of its major sustainability initiative, the British luxury carmaker has modified the iconic Continental GT3 Pikes Peak to compete for the Time Attack 1 record at this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Bentley, the sports car, will be the first competitor to run on renewable fuel ahead of a goal to offer sustainable fuels to Bentley’s customers around the world. The company has already started its tests for various blends of fuels, with possible greenhouse gas reductions of up to 85 percent over standard fossil fuel. The Continental GT3 running of biofuels marks the start of a more extended program that will investigate both biofuels and e-fuels for their potential to power the Bentleys of past and present in a sustainable way. The car is set to maneuver 156 corners at an average speed of more than 78 mph, to cross the finish line in under 9 minutes and 36 seconds. The 5,000-foot climb starts at 9,300 feet, and the course climbs to 14,100 feet, where the air is one third less dense than at sea level. To help achieve this ambitious target, Bentley has once again turned to three-time Pikes Peak champion and former “King of the Mountain” Rhys Millen of New Zealand. It was with Millen that Bentley captured its two existing Pikes Peak

records: the Production SUV record attained in 2018 with a Bentayga W12, and the outright Production Car record scored in 2019 with a Continental GT. “We are delighted to be returning to Pikes Peak for a third time, now powered by renewable fuel as the launch project for another new element of our Beyond100 program,” says Matthias Rabe, a member of Bentley’s Board for Engineering. “Our powertrain engineers are already researching both biofuels and e-fuels for use by our customers alongside our electrification program, with intermediate steps of adopting renewable fuels at the factory in Crewe and for our company fleet. In the meantime, the Continental GT3 Pikes Peak will show that renewable fuels can allow motorsport to continue in a responsible way, and hopefully it will capture the third and final record in our triple crown.” Considering the terrain and race requirements, Bentley has upped its game with significant modifications to its aerodynamics package and engine, turning it into the most extreme iteration of a Continental GT or any Bentley road car ever. The biggest rear wing ever fitted to a Bentley dominates the rear of the vehicle. Sitting above a highly efficient rear diffuser that surrounds the transaxle gearbox are some other evident changes. The brand has also worked on the rear aerodynamic package by balancing it with a two-plane splitter at the front, flanked by separate dive planes. For its engine, the Continental GT3 Pikes Peak possesses Bentley’s proven racing power unit, developed from the 4.0-liter turbo V8 fitted to the Continental GT V8. Further modifications include cooling air scoops in place of the rear windows and the obligatory stopwatch mounted to the roll cage next to the steering wheel to allow Millen to keep track of his sector times up the mountain.

LIST

IT’S BEEN A DECADE SINCE BRITISH LUXURY AUTOMOBILE

manufacturing company McLaren dipped its toes in the production-car pool with the MP4-12C in 2011. The latest by the supercar marque is the 2022 Artura, the brand’s first high-performance hybrid supercar. “Every drop of McLaren’s experience and expertise has been poured into the Artura,” says CEO Mike Flewitt. “Our all-new high-performance hybrid delivers all of the performance, driver engagement and dynamic excellence for which McLaren is renowned, with the additional benefit of EV driving capability. The introduction of the Artura is a landmark moment — for McLaren, for our customers who will appreciate and enjoy this car on every emotional and rational level, and for the supercar world.” At the heart of Artura’s powertrain is McLaren’s all-new 2,993cc twinturbocharged V6 engine. With a power output of 585PS — nearly 200 PS per litre — and 585Nm of torque, the dry-sump aluminium engine is compact and lightweight; at just 160kg, it weighs 50kg less than a McLaren V8 and is significantly shorter, enhancing packaging efficiency. Working in harmony with the new V6 is the Artura’s compact axial flux E-motor, located within the transmission bell housing. Smaller and more powerdense than a conventional radial flux E-motor, it can generate 95PS and 225Nm and boasts a power density per kilo 33 percent greater than the system used in the McLaren P1. The instantaneous nature of the motor’s torque delivery — known as “torque infill” — is key to the car’s razorsharp throttle response. The Artura is the first model to have the new McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) at its core. Designed and manufactured at the McLaren Composites Technology Center in the Sheffield region, MCLA sets a new standard for McLaren’s advanced flexible chassis design. Optimized for high-performance hybrid applications, it includes a bespoke battery compartment. It introduces a groundbreaking domain-based ethernet electrical architecture, along with an electrical heating, ventilation and airconditioning (eHVAC) system. The supercar is designed with full plug-in hybrid capability and can be charged to 80 percent in just 2.5 hours with a standard EVSE cable. The batteries can also harvest power from the combustion engine during driving, tailored to the driving mode selected. Inside, the Artura is no less of a revolution, with the cockpit centered more than ever around the driver. Choose from four powertrain modes,

including an E-mode for 30km of emissions-free, electric-only driving. Designed for mixed driving conditions, the Comfort mode maximizes range and efficiency. The combustion engine shuts off under 40km/h using an extended stop and start mode but phases in for more incredible speed and power requirements. In the Sport and Track modes, electric power is deployed aggressively for low-end response and acceleration (“torque infill”). An all-new McLaren infotainment and connectivity system (MIS II) utilizes two high-definition screens. The interface is built on allnew software and bespoke hardware to deliver a smartphone level of responsiveness and is also capable of smartphone mirroring. MIS II includes updated versions of familiar McLaren apps, including McLaren Track Telemetry and Variable Drift Control, and features a redesigned navigation map in the instrument cluster that focuses on key information to minimize driver distraction. “The all-new McLaren Artura was designed and engineered to perform at the highest level across the board, in electric power-only, zero-emission, urban commutes to weekend breaks, favorite drives and track day sessions,” says Jamie Corstorphine, McLaren product strategy director. He adds, “As well as setting new standards in the supercar class for performance and efficiency, it has a world-class warranty and service package to match, giving our customers peace of mind while they are enjoying their new high-performance hybrid supercar to the full.” Every new Artura will be covered from the point of purchase by a 5-year/75,000km vehicle warranty, 6-year/75,000km hybrid battery warranty and 10-year, unlimited mileage, body (anti-perforation) warranty. This comprehensive package is included as standard in all markets worldwide, with the further provision of a 5-year roadside assistance package in most regions, including the U.K. Owners will also benefit from a 3-year service plan, which covers the cost of all regular maintenance undertaken in the 12-month/15,000km/9,000-mile interval, including oil and filter changes, renewal of the engine and E-motor air filters, brake fluid replenishment and safety inspections. The new Artura, which is priced from £185,500 in the U.K. (roughly $255,000), is available in a standard specification and three different trim levels: Performance, which has a sporting, functional aesthetic; TechLux, where the focus is on the technical luxury the name suggests; and Vision, which has a more and adventurous look and feel. @hauteauto HAUTE LIVING 41

AZIMUT YACHTS’ LATEST LAUNCH IS A TRUE WORK OF ART.

The 82-foot superyacht is so important to the company that it plans to make a movie about it: award-winning director Gabriele Muccino, who directed Will Smith in The Pursuit of Happyness, has agreed to make a short film about the Magellano 25 Metri. This superyacht is a collaboration. Vincenzo De Cotiis, an internationally renowned artist and architect, designed the interiors of the boat in line with his unmistakable language. The refined external lines, with chic taste and timeless elegance, are a creation of Dutch naval architect Ken Freivokh. The yacht is characterized by the widespread use of carbon, which makes it environmentally conscious, and has an active air sanitation system based on a NASA patent. It also uses “hotel mode” functionality that allows use of the main onboard services for an extended time when the boat is at anchor without having to turn on the generators. Designed with a special low-consumption dual mode hull, the Magellano 25 Metri offers the highest levels of comfort and safety even in rough seas. It is one of the few boats in its category to have direct access from the internal wheelhouse, located in a raised position on the main deck, and the external one on the flybridge, to facilitate the work of the captain and the crew on board. De Cotiis uses a special type of resin embellished with a bronze powder to give interior surfaces a cloudy effect and the look of some precious stones. He also makes extensive use of fiberglass in an artistic manner. Brushed Verde Alpi marble, lush carpet, polished brass, dark walnut wood, lacquered wood, and wood ribbing add to the customized effect. Two original artworks from the designer hang in the owner’s cabin and the corridor of the yacht.

Another glorious space on the yacht is the salon, where the designer uses a mirror coating that reflects the light to “dematerialize” the structure. At night, in addition to the lamps and the classic ceiling spotlights, the sofas are illuminated from beneath to give a suspended effect. All the fabrics are designed by Loro Piana Interiors. In the owner’s suite, one gets the impression that space expands thanks to the inclined position of the walk-in closet, while the mirror coating makes volume disappear and reflects the light and the starboard panorama, creating highly suggestive changing optical effects. On the lower deck, there are four sleeping cabins, two of which are VIP cabins, one double and one with double sliding beds. Exterior designer Freivokh started with the concept of timelessness. The central element from which the whole project develops is a fully glazed superstructure designed to create the feeling of a penthouse on the sea. The elegant spiral staircase, teak side flaps and retro hull window cut-outs give greater personality to the profile of the yacht. The sundeck and lounge in the bow area can be experienced differently depending on the time of day, while the stern, thanks to a pivoting door mechanism, offers the charm of an Infinity Terrace from which to contemplate the sunset without any visual impediment. The dual mode hull, in burnished teal with a mustard beauty band, created by Pierluigi Ausonio’s studio, guarantees safe and comfortable navigation, even in rough seas. The engine is powered by a pair of 1,400 horsepower Man engines (or, alternatively, 1,550 horsepower) with V-Drive shaft drive. Stabilization is entrusted to a Humpree electric fin system. The expected maximum speed is around 24-25 knots, while the cruising speed is 21 knots.

the name implies—the owner’s dream yacht. It took one rightful owner, two extraordinary designers and 18 months of delivery time. Oceanco’s 295-foot motor yacht is called DreAMboat, emphasizing the owner’s initials, AM. The innovative yacht is a first-time collaboration between two of the most renowned yacht designers in the superyacht world: Espen Øino International for the exterior and Terence Disdale Design for the interior. DreAMboat features elegant and engaging exterior lines. The generous overhangs from the superstructure and cut-outs in the bulwarks lend a traditional yet muscular appearance. “At the outset, the exterior design was intended to be understated and timeless,” says designer Espen Øino. “Working closely with Oceanco, all the primary surfaces and details were created keeping this in mind. The result is one I think we all can identify with. At the launch, she came out of the facility looking strong and proud, with a lot of presence.” The superyacht boasts a whole carbon canopy mast house and mast, forming an integral part of the overall design. DreAMboat was also built to accommodate family life. The emphasis is on large windows that flood the interior with daylight and offer unspoiled views. The outside space features a large swimming pool on the main aft deck, a spa on the bridge deck aft with a custombuilt hydro/massage bath, and a private jacuzzi on the owner’s deck. The yacht also has a large variety of toys, tenders and audio/video appliances that appeal to all ages, with a large selection of water toys, including a custom-built diving board. Said Dan Jackson, the owner’s representative, “From the first time the owner saw the boat, still in the outfitting facility, and met everyone

involved in the project, he knew that the combination of Espen’s timeless exterior, Terence Disdale’s elegant and calming interior and Oceanco’s ability to deliver the boat on time and to the quality he required was just right for him. After some minor enhancements made to suit him and his family, we got right into it, and here we are 18 months later, proud to be delivering him his DreAMboat.” Terence Disdale has created an interior that incorporates bespoke surfaces, natural wood, limestone floors, semiprecious stone vanities, parchment, leather and mother-of-pearl. The effect is elegant without being overdone. The fixed and loose furniture and the upholstery and cushions all provide an inviting and harmonious ensemble that complements the yacht’s exterior design. The large saloons, multiple dining areas, and intimate lounging settings offer myriad possibilities for large and small groups to congregate, making DreAMboat ideal for a multigenerational group. DreAMboat is an example of proven reliable technology combined with state-of-the-art AV/IT infrastructure, including a complex IP ship’s computer operating system. She has been designed for efficiency on many fronts, including a heat recovery system for potable water. She has also achieved ECO-IHM (inventory of hazardous materials) notation, which demonstrates an overall commitment to operating the vessel on an environmentally sound basis beyond statutory compliance. The beautiful steel hull and aluminium superstructure is powered by twin MTU 4,828hp / 3,600kW MTU 20V 4000. “Delivering DreAMboat is the ultimate milestone in Oceanco’s ethos of creating the owner’s perfect yacht,” said Oceanco project director Roderick Gort.

L’Assiette Champenoise in nearby Tinqueux, a suburb of Reims, is another mighty choice courtesy of chef Arnaud Lallement, while the ethereal Café du Palais, with its stained-glass ceiling, is a true locals’ haunt. Last but not least, head to the Michelin-starred Le Millénaire Reims, which offers precise, exquisitely presented fare worthy of its name. L’Assiette Champenoise Reims Cathedral

ORIGINAL EXPERIENCES

Dom Perignon’s tomb, Abbey Saint Pierre

Those who want something off the beaten path head to Perching Bar in Verzy, where you can sip some fine vintages high in the treetops, up in the sky. And speaking of the sky, a hot-air balloon ride over the vineyards of Champagne is perfect for those seeking the magical. If you’re terrified of heights or leery of the time commitment, Balloon Epernay — a tethered balloon ride overlooking Avenue de Champagne — is a more manageable option. And though it might seem macabre, a visit to Dom Perignon’s tomb, in the Abbey Saint Pierre in the quaint village of Hautvillers, is a must for any true champagne enthusiast. The Benedictine monk’s contributions to the community are substantial: He is largely considered to be the “founder” of champagne. Indisputably, he’s also responsible for the most famous champagne quote of all time. “Come quickly,” he said, “for I am drinking stars!” And so, now, can you. Balloon Epernay

TRAVEL

CHATEAU DE SACY

It’s hard to imagine that properties like Chateau de Sacy exist, but luckily for hedonistic travelers, they do. Built in 1850 and brought painstakingly back to life by the Millésime Collection in 2017 (millésime, appropriately, means “vintage” in French), this grand country home on Reims Mountain is an authentic interpretation of the good life. Guests are welcomed into a timeless environment, a bubble where shared experiences are encouraged and technology is not. Leave the cell phone on mute, forget about watching TV (there aren’t any on site) and soak in the beauty each of its 12 uniquely decorated rooms and suites offers, all while enjoying copious amounts of champagne. Every element of this stay has a “best of” touch, be it the exceptional Mariage Frères teas served with breakfast;bespoke spa treatments, such as the “Signature Effervescence” facial, which echoes the feeling of champagne bubbles on the skin; the “Mindful Champagne-Tasting Experience,” a clever interpretation of what the region does best; or the hands-on classes, one of which teaches the art of sabering. A stay at Chateau de Sacy is truly an ode to celebration and the art of the French lifestyle. www.chateaudesacy-reims.fr

LA CASERNE CHANZY HOTEL & SPA

Chateau de Sacy

Those looking for a beautiful place to stay in the heart of Reims, the unofficial capital of the Champagne region, need look no farther than the beautiful new La Caserne Chanzy Hotel & Spa. Located in a former fire station, the Autograph Collection’s first-ever regional hotel offers postcard-perfect views of Reims Cathedral — the traditional coronation site for French kings — and a stellar location central to many of the area’s best attractions, including the Palais du Tau, Beaux-Arts Museum and Reims Opera House. Its 89 rooms and suites echo the ethos of Champagne — a carpet with patterns that nod to aerial views of the Champenois hillside, light fixtures in the shape of champagne bottles, and photos courtesy of visual artist Pierre-Elie de Pibrac that represent the successive steps of champagne production: harvesting, fermentation, clarification, blending, ridding, disgorging and tasting. The vibe is also found in the cork-covered lobby walls, whose mineral tones are inspired by crayères, the underground chalk quarries where champagne is kept. While the property’s onsite restaurant, La Grande Georgette, does not play to the region per se, it does pay tribute to the building’s past via industrial décor, ladder fittings and bright-red splashes typically found in the fireman’s world. lacasernechanzy.com

THE ROYAL CHAMPAGNE HOTEL & SPA

In the heart of Champillon, a town of just 500 that overlooks the lush vineyards of the Marne Valley, sits Europe’s most celebrated resort, the resplendent Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa. It isn’t hard to imagine that this 100,000-square-foot, 47-room eco-friendly oasis was, in its past life as a coaching inn, a pit stop for kings en route to their royal coronations: Every inch of this champagne-soaked property is an exquisite homage to its celebratory location. Royal Champagne’s very composition — quartz stones for opacity, acres of glass for transparency, terraces that showcase the grape-studded terroir and rooms imbued with varying champagne-reminiscent colors (the petal pink of a good rosé and the glossy gold of a sparkling brut) — creates a sensual, singular refinement. But it’s the extra touches that make the resort so lauded: Hermès bathroom amenities; a press-for-champagne button for those craving bubbles all day; an afternoon ice cream and champagne cart that glides silkily from room to room; a dedicated champagne concierge who can arrange exclusive tastings at the many nearby maisons (no easy feat, as many are entirely private or require a personal “in”); the region’s only destination spa, a collaboration with cult favorite Biologique Recherche; two swimming pools, one of which is charmingly surrounded by clusters of grapes; and, of course, a Michelin-starred restaurant. Speaking of those extra touches, the resort is celebrating the opening of France’s borders post-pandemic as well as the bicentennial anniversary of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte I’s death in a big way: by partnering with Maison Chaumet, the official jeweler of Empress Joséphine, to provide private access to a rare exhibition of 150 rarely seen artworks, jewels and gowns that runs through July 18. Only those staying in the hotel’s exclusive Joséphine or Marie-Louise suites can take advantage of this unparalleled historical offering, so get booking! royalchampagne.com Chateau de Sacy

EAT WELL TO HEAL WELL Foods that enhance your recovery after plastic surgery.

WHILE IT IS ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO MAINTAIN PROPER NUTRITION

and eat a well-balanced diet, eating healthfully becomes even more important prior to and immediately after a plastic surgery procedure. Although plastic surgery is typically lower-risk than other surgeries, there are several things patients can do to maximize their results and healing after the surgeon’s work is over. Diet and nutrition are the part of postoperative care that you can truly take into your own hands. Proper nutrition enhances your health and promotes faster healing. Patients who incorporate these foods and nutrients into their diet daily tend to have the best postsurgical outcomes. Protein: One of the best things for wound healing and repair is collagen. Collagen is a protein molecule that is a major component of human connective tissue. If you are having surgery, it is important to eat foods that provide adequate protein to ensure enough collagen can be synthesized by the body for wound repair. Good sources of lean protein include poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, beans and other legumes. Carbohydrates: Although carbohydrates sometimes get a bad rap, eating the right ones provides additional nutrients that promote wound healing. The body uses carbohydrates to build the backbone of amino acids and protein, which we already established is critical for wound healing. Importantly, if you have had fat grafting procedures, there is evidence that carbohydrates are the best nutrient for increasing fat retention in the area of the graft. This is likely because fat cells are sensitive to insulin. As carbohydrates are digested into sugars, insulin levels increase and promote fat graft survival. The best carbs to eat are complex carbohydrates and whole grains. This includes fruit, vegetables, whole-grain bread, brown rice, potatoes, corn, barley and whole-grain pasta.

56 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com/hautebeauty

Fiber: Due to the effects of anesthetics used during surgery, the digestive system often slows down, and that can make you feel constipated postoperatively. It is important to keep eating foods with fiber to keep your digestive system active and moving. Fiber is abundant in complex carbohydrate-rich foods including fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Probiotics: Probiotics are another way to maintain a healthy digestive system. In addition to the effects of anesthetics, the antibiotics administered during surgery for the prevention of infection can kill the good bacteria in your gut that keep your digestive system healthy. Foods with probiotics such as yogurt can help maintain a healthy gut microbiome to counteract the effects of antibiotics and anesthetics. Vitamin A: Vitamin A goes beyond maintaining your vision. It stimulates skin cell growth, blood vessel growth, collagen synthesis and granulation tissue formation. It has many benefits for wound healing and can be found in carrots, sweet potatoes, mangoes and dark leafy greens. Vitamin C: As mentioned previously, collagen is one of the most important molecules for wound healing. However, it would be nothing without the action of vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential for cross-linking collagen to form strong bonds between the molecules. Since vitamin C is a water-soluble molecule and cannot be stored in the body, it is important to consume vitamin C-rich foods every single day before and after surgery. Foods with high vitamin C content include kiwi, citrus, peppers, berries, broccoli and brussels sprouts. Zinc: Zinc works together with vitamin C to cross-link collagen. It promotes uniform and strong wound healing, so it is important to ensure you have enough in your diet after surgery. Zinc is found in red meat, eggs, legumes, seeds, nuts, shellfish and dark chocolate.

WORK-LIFE

BALANCE We asked our Haute Beauty experts to share how they maintain a healthy balance between their work and their personal life. Here’s what they had to say.

MICHELLE LUIS, DMD | SMILE EXPERT | NORTH MIAMI

Any busy professional will tell you about the struggle of work-life balance. Sometimes we achieve this, and sometimes we don’t. A dear friend of mine, a fellow professional, likes to say “Life strikes again” in reference to those unpredictable circumstances in life. Keeping the balance during those moments is the most challenging. The best tools I have to keep my balance are positive self-talk and maintaining an organized list of prioritized tasks. My checklist includes both work and life goals, such as dinner with friends, quality time with my family, working out, medical appointments and other activities that keep my body and mind well. I typically write out my list for the week on Sunday evenings. I start Monday with a plan and then tell myself I will utilize my time according to this plan. If, by the end of the week, I have not achieved the balance I planned on, I adjust. I do not beat myself up about it; I just reset my list of priorities and desires for the following week. It’s common for me to roll over something I didn’t get done to the list for the following week. We will never get it perfect, but staying positive and organized with a plan in place are the tools that help keep me on track.

MIMI YEUNG, DDS | SMILE EXPERT | NEW YORK

A healthy work and personal life are not too hard to maintain if you love what you do — no stress to bring home! When you are at peace, at home, those around you also are able to achieve their balance in their life with more ease.

JUPNEESH SINGH, DDS | SMILE EXPERT | PHOENIX

Maintaining a balance between personal and professional life is always a challenge for us health care professionals. Having a loving wife who is the mother to our three beautiful children makes it a lot easier. My children enjoy playing sports such as basketball, tennis, swimming, and ping-pong. That makes it easy for me to be part of their lives, as I enjoy anything sporty. I am blessed to start my mornings off with my family every day. I get to enjoy making breakfast for my children and 58 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com/hautebeauty

taking them to school. This really helps me start my day, to serve my family first. When I get to the office, it’s a natural progression to serving our patients and my work family. Serving our patients, making them feel welcome and treating them with kindness are principles I stand behind. I try my best to listen first and understand each patient’s wants and desires. Then I can offer them options to help them attain their cosmetic goals with conservative dentistry. Being a dentist, I enjoy the flexibility of my work schedule to take time off to spend with my family as well. Spontaneous date nights with my wife are the cherry on top!

KARI FEINSTEIN, ENLIGHTEN MD | MEDSPA | DALLAS

After 17 years of owning a medical spa and speaking to countless patients, what I am the clearest about is that no one has it all! Some get great brows. Some have the hair, the lips, the lashes, even the best tush. I find it more beneficial to help women maximize their best assets as opposed to focusing on what they don’t like. My job is to help my patients with balance. Nothing is good in excess. You can’t have it all, but starting each day with a grateful heart is a great place to start. You are only gifted one body that you can’t trade in. Take care of it all, because it feels good to be strong, healthy and confident. Have a plan. Plan your workouts, your vacations, your family time and especially your beauty regimen. It takes a plan!

MINDY DIPIETRO, CEO, AESTHETIC TREATMENT CENTERS | MEDSPA | NAPLES

Work-life balance can certainly be an issue, particularly for female entrepreneurs. I can honestly say this has been a major challenge throughout my career. Time blocking has been a very effective strategy. Using one master calendar for work, family and personal obligations has been a lifesaver. Choosing a color for work, family, personal and social time can give you a visual representation of where things may be out of balance. I find that time with our significant others and our personal health, such as gym time, tends to get pushed out first, even though they are essential to our happiness and longevity.

JACKIE PANTALONE, STUDIO SCULPT + MOXXI | MEDSPA | SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN

As a wife, mother, CPA, owner of two businesses and full-time CFO of an engineering firm, I find balance difficult to achieve. My business mentor, Dave Kunselman, taught me some very important lessons for building a life that you love. First, invest in people you can trust, and learn

PHOTOS COURTESY OF ANDREY POPOV/SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

ASHANDRA BATISTE, DDS | SMILE EXPERT | HOUSTON

Maintaining balance is key to my success. It begins with getting rest every night. I do my best to sleep a minimum of seven hours. I am also committed to working out at least three times a week. I have to thank the pandemic for one thing: great at-home workouts! I am a Peloton addict. It truly helps me decrease my stress and maintain my sanity, and I get the perk of having a better body while at it!

Haute to delegate. You are limited by self-performance. Second, after those people are in place, carve out time to do the things you love and that recharge you. Business is the long game, and you have to pursue it in a way that is sustainable if you want to avoid burnout. Third, if your work is something you are passionate about, it won’t feel like work. Operate in your area of excellence and outsource those things that are not in that zone. I have been fortunate to be mentored and supported by amazing people in my life who have made it possible for me to succeed in all my many roles.

COURTNEY M C CRACKEN, STUDIO SCULPT + MOXXI | MEDSPA | SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN

This is a difficult one for me, as my work often fades into my personal life. That is just part of the expectation I set for myself while building up my business. I found that it is easy to lose yourself in what you are passionate about. When I’m feeling burnt out or know I’ve had several busy days in a row, I make it a point to give myself a break. I block off personal days to regroup and do something fun with my friends or family. This has been essential to maintaining my happiness and continuing my drive to do what I love.

RACHEL DUKE | AESTHETIC INJECTOR | DMV

The first step is to find your passion and be able to monetize that. When you are fully into your craft, it becomes part of your self-care equation. Even then, you still need to be able to step back and see yourself and your career from a different vantage point. That balance is different for everyone. We must create opportunities for self-reflection that are healthy for each of us to make adjustments that allow us to achieve our hoped-for future. Having that monthly lash appointment, hair appointment or spa appointment just for you and engaging in activities that are nonnegotiable in terms of missing them is the discipline we all need. I have found, over this last challenging year, that attending online virtual conferences on personal development has helped me self-reflect and take some time away. Your balance may be to take a day and stay in bed, or to take a vacation. It’s all okay. Find what helps you give 100 percent in all you do, in and out of the office.

ALINA SHOLAR, MD | MEDICAL AESTHETICS | AUSTIN

Personally, I have concluded that the chase after work-life balance results in much more frustration and dejection than real satisfaction. For many, work feels like something you’re obliged to do, but if we consider the amount of time and energy work consumes, we are summarily dismissing a huge part of our lives. Instead, we should view work as our action in the world. Our task is to live each moment, recognizing that at that moment, whatever we are doing, we are expressing our life’s purpose. It is in each moment, at work or at home, that we are cultivating what is to come, weaving the tapestry of our lives. There is no time-out. Every moment counts. If we feel our lives are out of balance, it is because our work does not nourish us and does not foster our possibilities to exercise our creativity, our passion, our joy and our potential. That is what is out of balance! Once we begin to pursue purpose instead, we will experience a new wholeheartedness in everything we do. The balance will find itself.

TAHL N. HUMES, DO | MEDICAL AESTHETICS | DENVER

Putting in 100 percent effort at home and at work as rewarding as it is exhausting. I make my mental health the priority. A good night’s sleep and a positive attitude are crucial. Mental and physical health is the key to happiness, personal fulfillment and professional satisfaction.

BEAUTY

PAULA CHRISTIANSEN, MINT WELLNESS CENTER | WELLNESS | MIAMI/FORT LAUDERDALE

Work occupies a large amount of our time, and we are constantly taking it all home. Balancing personal and work life is essential, and overworking negatively affects our physical and mental health, increasing stress levels and disrupting personal relationships and our ability to do a good job. That is why achieving a healthy balance between work and personal life helps improve our health. I believe that to maintain a balanced relationship between work and our personal lives, it is important to set limits. A healthy lifestyle is essential to cope with stress and achieve balance, so diet, physical activity and getting enough sleep all play an important role in our daily routine. Many times, daily responsibilities and obligations force us to dedicate more time to our work and put our own health aside, but there will come a time when our body demands some care. I have always considered that beauty is not only external but also internal, which is why my spa that offers beauty treatments that provide a total relaxation experience.

KARYN GROSSMAN, MD | SKIN EXPERT | LOS ANGELES

You can’t take care of everyone else if you’re not taking care of yourself. That’s why I believe keeping a healthy balance between work and personal life is vital to each individual’s well-being. As a single mom and business owner, I know how challenging it can be, but with some effort, it is definitely possible. Learning to be 100 percent focused is a helpful tool. When I am at work, my patients have my undivided attention, and when I am with my family, they have it. This keeps everyone’s bucket full; they know that when I am with them, nothing is more important. Also, I keep a detailed calendar in which I block off time regularly for myself and my family; the rest of the time I dedicate to work and my patients. Sticking to the schedule and planning out time to relax is very helpful.

MAMINA TUREGANO, MD | SKIN EXPERT | NEW ORLEANS

It’s important to know your limits. As much as I love seeing patients in my practice, I knew that for me to have a normal personal life, I had to cut back on my hours at work. And when I’m at work, I try to get all my work done there — notes, lab reviews, biopsy reviews — and not bring it home with me. I also make a daily to-do list, but I emphasize the three most important things I need to get done that day and focus on those, and I try not to beat myself up if I’m not tackling all the things on my list.

MARA WEINSTEIN-VELEZ, MD | SKIN EXPERT | ROCHESTER, NEW YORK

After last year, the work-life balance paradigm experienced a major shift. My personal experience is not unique, being a working mother of three, dedicated wife and motivated career woman, but I’ve had to learn to reprioritize and dive deep into what I am most passionate about in order to achieve and maintain some form of balance! Here is my philosophy: I’ve had to make a conscious effort to prioritize my health and personal well-being. If I’m not healthy, happy and rested, I can’t give my best to fulfill the roles of mom, wife, friend, peer and colleague. I try to set aside an hour each day for “me time” to exercise, meditate, read or do whatever it takes to reset. hauteliving.com/hautebeauty HAUTE LIVING

MEROIS

NUSR-ET

Beverly Hills residents blinked and missed the quiet, almost secretive opening of Nusret Gökçe’s 90210 Nusr-Et outpost. It’s the fifth U.S. restaurant and 24th global eatery from the man best known as Salt Bae, and his Golden Triangle location doesn’t disappoint. Guests enter the former Citizen space through a distinctive red door framed with Turkish tiles inspired by Gökçe’s homeland, where a portrait of the chef is waiting to welcome them and where those who favor social media as much as he does can share their “one and only” Nusr-Et experience. Inside, a modern space flanked by an open kitchen, a meat locker of “meat art pieces” and a selection of works by famous Turkish photographer Ara Güler that pay tribute to Hollywood are on full display, providing equitably aesthetic visuals for the restaurant’s key audience, the jet-setting entertainment crowd. (Though of course, no sight is more exciting to the L.A. elite than the meat-cutting, salt-throwing Salt Bae himself.) 184 -88 N Canon Dr, Beverly Hills (310) 921-5935

Find fabulous fare and an al fresco ambiance at the Beverly Wilshire’s Blvd Privé.

Start brunch right with Pacific oysters with charred cucumber and urfa pepper mignonette at Sant’olina.

Wolfgang Puck has expanded and extended his L.A. empire to include Merois and Ospero at the new Pendry West Hollywood hotel. Guests will come for the view at Merois, which celebrates the open-air allure of the City of Angels from the Sunset Boulevard hotel’s rooftop, and stay for a menu that spotlights the chef’s eye for the sophisticated subtleties of Japanese, Southeast Asian and French/Californian cuisine. Standout dishes include signatures such as Snake River Farms dry-aged tomahawk ribeye, as well as new items like marinated bigeye tuna with Kaluga caviar and rice crisp and warm lobster salad. Meanwhile, Ospero, located on the corner of Sunset and Olive Drive, is a more casual concept, an Americanized version of a European-style café. The restaurant — which features a terrace as well as indoor seating — plays to Puck’s other strength, Italian, with a menu of handmade pastas and housemade pizzas fresh from a wood-burning oven. 8430 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood (323) 918-3410

SANT’OLINA

The h.wood Group has done it again — and by “it” we mean creating yet another L.A. hot spot. Sant’olina, the stunning new pop-up on The Beverly Hilton’s rooftop, offers a melting pot of Mediterranean cuisine with a distinctive SoCal vibe. The blue and green décor is meant to mimic a seaside escape, and the beachy feel is echoed in the cuisine, courtesy of a culinary team led by chefs Michael Teich, David Johns and Slab’s Burt Bakman. Diners will discover bright, vibrant, healthy and vegetable-forward items including Middle Eastern mujadarra, halloumi, cauliflower tabbouleh, chickpea matbucha, keftedes, bourekas and harissa-cured salmon. 9876 Wilshire Blvd, Beverly Hills (310) 285-1260

THE BUNGALOW KITCHEN BELMONT SHORE BY MICHAEL MINA

Award-winning chef Michael Mina and hospitality veteran Brent Bolthouse have joined forces for their first California partnership. This new social dining experience and community clubhouse echoes the feel of Bolthouse’s supersuccessful Bungalow location in Santa Monica with its homey Californiachic feel, though with a distinctive sense of place that’s purely its own. As designed by Venice-based design firm Studio Collective, the 10,000-square-foot venue nods to the punk-rock edge of the Long Beach community by putting a contemporary spin on the traditional Craftsman bungalow, maintaining certain classic structural elements (wood plank ceilings, large fireplaces, a covered porch) and adding the hip, eclectic furnishings one might expect to find in a local musician’s home. A copper-topped bar, plush custom sofas, a 3,000-square-foot patio with views of the marina and a game room featuring rock and roll memorabilia vie for attention with the too-cool-for-school pool table. Mina’s California-specific, seasonal cuisine — such as garden “punch bowls” with crunchy, ice-cold veggies served with gazpacho shooters, decadent lobster pot pie and short-rib Pop-Tarts — seamlessly adds to the venue’s overall luxury-meets-laid-back feel. 6400 Pacific Coast Hwy, Long Beach (562) 719-9400

Don’t miss Wolfgang Puck’s marinated bigeye tuna with Kaluga caviar and rice crisp at Merois.

THE BLVD PRIVÉ

The Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel is the latest place to include a dedicated outdoor space in its arsenal with the opening of its al fresco The Blvd Privé. This elegant hideaway features California-inspired menu items, Ruinart champagne, fanciful cocktails and décor that’s a nostalgic throwback to the Beverly Hills hotel’s 1970s-era opening. At this magical outdoor spot, dine in privacy underneath illuminated gas lamps imported from a castle in Edinburgh, enclosed by lush green hedges while enjoying locally sourced cuisine created by chef Amir Nematipour. Signature items include branzino with chermoula and BBQ lime; a roasted acorn squash winter salad with California-grown kale, quinoa and cranberry dressing; a Snake River Farm beef filet paired with truffled gnocchi, roasted greens and peppercorn sauce; and for dessert, a Privé cocoa bar made with chocolate moelleux sponge, chocolate crémeux, hazelnut crush and cocoa nib nougatine. 9500 Wilshire Blvd, Beverly Hills (310) 275 5200 @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 87

Restaurant | 3 Bedroom Apartment | ±2.5 acres Oceanfront Lot Rocky Point is located 10 miles south of Carmel along the most scenic, beautiful stretch of Highway 1 between Carmel and Big Sur. Currently zoned for both residential and commercial with 3 apartments and the Rocky Point Restaurant on ±2.5 acres of coastal land at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. retail shopping for the savvy business investor. A few lucky wedding couples have been blessed to tie the knot at Rocky Point for their dream Destination Wedding. Special Events and Corporate Retreats have been dazzled by the location. Rocky Point could become your specialty Bed & Breakfast Inn, subject to approval. With the mixed zoning, there are many opportunities and use choices, we leave it up to your imagination subject to approval of Coastal Commission and County of Monterey. The land all the way to the ocean, the building itself, the existing restaurant, the special liquor license, the 3 residential units on site, and all fixtures and equipment are included in the price. This is a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to acquire this very rare property. The restaurant on average served about 300 people and busiest days on holidays would serve over 450 people.
