In his new Netflix documentary, Quincy Jones shows how he’s always managed to hit all the right notes.

DR. DRE IS WALKING THROUGH QUINCY JONES’ LOS ANGELES HOME
and he is in awe. “Can you even fathom what’s happening? This is so f***ing crazy. [There’s] so much history here,” he marvels. Through the lens of a camera, we see what Dre sees as he prepares to shoot a special edition of his Beats 1 show, The Pharmacy: Walls liberally lined with platinum and gold records; a slew of album covers, including Michael Jackson’s Thriller; a series of movie posters for soundtracks he’s scored; and personal photographs with fellow icons like the late Jackson and Paul McCartney, his friends. “You’re my ultimate mentor and inspiration. You’re the reason I decided to get into production,” Dre admits reverently, before presenting Jones to his program’s listeners as “the legend of all legends.” It’s quite an introduction, and one that’s well-deserved. Jones, with a career spanning 60 years, is one of the most respected names in music history. He has a record 79 Grammy Award nominations and 27 Grammys; he is also one of 15 people in history to take home a Grammy Legend @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 15

Award; he has an Emmy, an Academy Award and a Tony to his name; is responsible for producing one of the top-selling albums of all time, Michael Jackson’s Thriller; launching the careers of A-list celebrities like Jackson, Oprah Winfrey and Will Smith; he is the first African American in history to be nominated for a Best Original Song Oscar (for “The Eyes of Love” from the 1967 film Banning), as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score for the film In Cold Blood, making him the first African American to be nominated twice in the same year; the first to conduct the Academy Awards’ orchestra; the first to receive the Academy’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award; has tied sound designer Willie D. Burton as the second-most Oscar-nominated African American in history; and he is the first African American to become VP of a major record label, Mercury Records. Additionally, he received the John F. Kennedy Center Honors in 2001, an honorary doctorate from the Royal Academy of Music, London in 2015 and in 2013, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Quincy Delight Jones Jr. hasn’t just lived through history, he is history. These achievements—and how he overcame his roots growing up in gangster territory on the gritty streets of Chicago to become a beloved cultural icon—are the subject of the new Netflix documentary Quincy. Thanks to his daughter Rashida Jones, who co-wrote and co-directed the September 21 release in collaboration with Alan Hicks, the film is a loving and starry-eyed labor of love offering unparalleled access into the living legend’s life. With a dash of definite hero worship, Rashida succeeds in showing her father’s countless career highs and capturing his true, endlessly charismatic essence. He calls everyone he meets—regardless of age or sex—“honey,” wants to immediately know their astrological sign when meeting someone new—which is such a frequent habit that the younger Jones dedicates an entire section to her father’s astrological curiosity—and is fond of littering his conversation with bebop-friendly phrases like “I’m pretty fair for a square.” Make no mistake: For Quincy Jones—otherwise known simply as “Q”—life is one long, nonstop party. Literally watching his life flash before his eyes was a unique experience, to be sure. In his opinion, Rashida successfully captured the good, the bad and the ugly. “I was stunned. I really was stunned,” he says. “My daughter knows me. She gets it all. Rashida misses nothing.” The 42-year-old actress-turned-director started her film where it all began for her dad, on the South Side of Depression-era Chicago. His mother, Sarah Jones, a schizophrenic with dementia, was taken away in a straightjacket when he was 7. His father, Quincy Delight Jones, was a carpenter for the Jones Boys, an African-American gang who ran the ghetto. As such, Jones and his brother, Lloyd, had to be tough. He carried a knife with him at all times and did whatever he had to in order to survive. It wasn’t always enough—he still has the scars to prove it―including one from an ice pick and another from being nailed by a switchblade. “We were street rats,” he recalls. “We’d see dead bodies every day, Tommy guns, stogies and piles of money in back rooms. When you’re young, you want to do what you see, and what I could see was gangsters.” His father saw it too, and moved Jones and his brother to Seattle, where he discovered his love of music by breaking into an armory and toying around with an old upright piano he found there. After that one moment of 16 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com
tinkling, he swears he knew music was his destiny. He tried percussion, trombone, sousaphone, B-flat baritone horn and the French horn before falling for the trumpet. “Just that idea of seeing black men that were dignified and proud, I thought, ‘That’s what I wanted to be,’” he notes. Armed with this new desire to succeed, at 14 he would hang out backstage “bugging” jazz musicians like Count Basie and Clark Terry to show him what they knew. He also befriended “RC,” otherwise known as Ray Charles, then a 16-year-old piano prodigy who would become like a brother to him (“Ray Charles taught me how to read Braille when I was 14 years old,” he recalls. “I spent his whole life with him. He was my blood brother, my buddy.”). He began playing in his first band and worked nightclubs, where he’d jam afterward playing bebop, a style of jazz developed in the mid-1940s characterized by fast tempos and complex chord progressions. “I had no control over where I lived, no control over my sick mother. I couldn’t control the angry whites who still called me n****r when they saw me alone on the street. Music was the one thing I could control. It was the one thing that offered me my freedom,” he says. After marrying high school sweetheart Jeri Caldwell at 24, he moved his wife and first daughter (he would eventually have six girls and one son), Jolie Levine, to New York, where he began touring with Lionel Hampton, writing for “anybody who would pay” before attracting the attention of singer Dinah Washington, who—charmed by his personality as much as his skills—demanded he produce her album. His career took off from there, and he began working with the biggest names in the business, from Louis Armstrong and Tony Bennett to Ray Charles and the Count Basie Orchestra. He moved to Paris, and continued his musical education with Nadia Boulanger, a French composer who had tutored the likes of Leonard Bernstein and Igor Stravinsky. In 1961, he decided to properly settle down with his first full-time job, making history in the process. He became the first African-American vice president of a major record label, Mercury, where he discovered and made a star of then 16-year-old Lesley Gore (“It’s My Party”). At the same time, his marriage to Caldwell disintegrated, and his ladies’ man status got out of control. His second daughter, Rachel, was the result of a short-lived affair with a back-up dancer named Carol Reynolds. But while he played hard, he was also hyper-focused on work—which is when he got “the call.” That call was from none other than Frank Sinatra. Ol’ Blue Eyes—whom he had met when conducting Sinatra’s orchestra in 1958 at a benefit concert in Monaco arranged by Princess Grace—had become impressed by Jones and wanted him to produce his 1964 collaboration with Count Basie, It Might as Well Be Swing. This became a major turning point in Jones’ life. The two worked together for years harmoniously, with no more than a handshake necessary to bind them together in lieu of a formal contract. “We had an amazing relationship. Frank had no grade: He either loved you or he’d roll over you with a Mack truck in reverse,” Jones says with a laugh. “He was one of the greatest human beings I ever met. Sinatra calls you up and asks you to [arrange for him]? I said, ‘Man, is the pope a Catholic? Get out of here! I’ll be there tomorrow.’ You dream about that, you know? That’s as good as it gets.”

Jones, whose friendship with Sinatra lasted until his death in 1998, considered the legendary singer to be more than a collaborator―he was also a friend. In 1968, one year after marrying Swedish model Ulla Andersson, Jones was in London scoring The Italian Job when the couple’s second child, Quincy Jones III, was born (their first was daughter Martina). “When I got home, stuck amid three months of mail was a letter from Frank Sinatra Enterprises,” he recalls. “It said, ‘Dear Q3, let Uncle Frank welcome you into this world with a college education, knowing it will be a far better world than the one we messed up.’ There was a bond in there for his entire college education. You don’t ask somebody for that; he just did it. That’s a friendship.” After his time with Sinatra, Jones decided he wanted to get into the business of film scoring and moved the family to Los Angeles, which is where his marriage to Andersson dissolved, and he took up with Peggy Lipton, the star of popular 1970s TV show The Mod Squad. The charmed life of Quincy Jones continued, and from his first films, Mirage and The Slender Thread in 1965, he began scoring countless movies. For seven years, he was in constant demand as a composer. His film credits included The Italian Job, The Out-Of-Towners, They Call Me Mister Tibbs! and The Getaway. In addition, he composed “The Streetbeater,” which became familiar as the theme music for the television sitcom Sanford and Son, and the themes for other TV shows including Ironside, Banacek, The Bill Cosby Show and the opening episode of Roots. But into each life a little rain must fall, and for Jones, that storm passed in 1974 when he suffered a life-threatening brain aneurysm. He was given a one in 100 chance to live. His friends and family even planned a memorial service for him—which he attended, along with Lipton, their then fourmonth-old daughter, Kidada, and a slew of famous friends including Richard Pryor, Marvin Gaye, Sarah Vaughan and Sidney Poitier. Jones survived the first surgery, and then the second, when doctors found another aneurysm and had to operate once again. But Jones, as you might have guessed, is incredibly blessed, and after being nursed back to health by his family and friends and giving birth to the daughter that would one day tell his story (in 1976), he began the next stage of his career, when he moved back to New York and became the lead producer on The Wiz, a fantasy film starring Michael Jackson. While working on the 1978 release, Jones also decided to produce Jackson’s solo album, Off the Wall, which simultaneously sold more than 20 million copies and also solidified Jones as the most powerful record producer in the industry at that time. “When Michael and I first worked together on The Wiz, I saw his work ethic. He knew everybody’s songs and lines from the movie. I knew he had more inside of him artistically than he’d given us with The Jackson Five,” Jones recalls. He became a father figure to Jackson according to Peggy Lipton. To that, Jones says with a laugh, “I guess part of a role of producer is being a babysitter, a father and a shrink!” And even though Jackson was as comfortable with Jones as he was with anyone, he still hid behind the couch occasionally and turned his back to Jones while singing. In spite of his shyness, their professional relationship had some amazing returns: Jones not only went on to produce Jackson’s Thriller, which sold 110 million copies and became the highest-selling album of all time (at the time) as well as the accompanying music video for Thriller—another unprecedented Jones concept, a 14-minute mini-film that contributed to the rise of music videos as promotional tools for album sales—and the 1987 album, Bad, which went on to sell 45 million copies. Jackson wasn’t Jones’ only focus at that time, of course. He had his fingers in every pie possible, as is his way. He first produced and conducted the 1985 charity song “We Are the World,” organizing some of the biggest global artists in one place to raise funds for victims of destitution in Ethiopia, and then he decided to produce a film, and in the process 20 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com
discovered a little-known star named Oprah Winfrey. He cast Winfrey in his 1985 film, The Color Purple, a coming-of-age period drama directed by Steven Spielberg based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Alice Walker, and in doing so, created the woman best known simply as ‘O.’ “I can’t drive a car, but what I can do is see the talent in a person… or not,” he says with a laugh. “When I first found Oprah, it was amazing. I told her that her future was so bright that it would burn my eyes. She never stops growing. She got $35,000 for The Color Purple, and she’s worth $3.5 billion today.” And while he’s proud of the career she’s created for herself, there’s one thing he hopes she does not achieve: the presidency. “I don’t want to see that or see her do that. I was in the White House for eight years with Bill and Hillary [Clinton]. It’s a terrible job. It’s heavy.” While he was busy creating a future in the film industry, he didn’t notice that his marriage to Lipton, whom he thought he’d be with forever, had deteriorated. He wanted to fix things, but there was nothing, in her eyes, that could be fixed. After their marriage ended, he continued to throw himself into his work. He became a forerunner in the rap community, fusing bebop and hip-hop together to create a unique sound, even hosting a Hip-Hop Symposium in 1985 to discuss correcting violence in the community. He won seven Grammys under his own name for his 1989 album, Back on the Block. He joined forces with Timer Warner, Inc. in 1990 to create Quincy Jones Entertainment (QJE), where he was responsible for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, as well as the discovery of megastar Will Smith (of whom he says, “Will had never acted before Fresh Prince, but I knew it would work. After a 15-minute read through, there was no doubt he was our guy. You could tell that there was no mountain too high for him.”). In 1993, he produced An American Reunion, a celebration of Bill Clinton’s inauguration as president of the United States; it was the first time such a special had been televised. That same year, Jones founded Vibe magazine. In 2001, he published Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones, and in 2007, partnered with Wizzard Media to launch the Quincy Jones Video Podcast, which was far ahead of its time. Most recently, in 2017, alongside French producer Reza Ackbaraly, he launched Qwest TV, the world’s first subscription video-on-demand service for jazz and electric music from around the world. In the meantime, he found and lost love—and had his last daughter, Kenya Julia Miambi Sarah Jones—with German actress Nastassja Kinski. Clearly, his career has been the stuff of legend, but because he tended to put work before his personal life, it suffered. He had to acknowledge that he had always been running from the loss of his mother, and, on a deeper level, the psychological mind games she played at his expense when he found her; she was fond of criticizing Jones’ every achievement. While it didn’t ruin him, it did wear him down, and made him want to achieve to spite her, in a sense. “My biggest fear my whole life after losing my mother was not being prepared for a great opportunity, so I made sure that I had my chops together the best I could,” he admits. “My mother and I never had a real mother-son relationship. That bruises you. Mothers and sons and daddies and daughters, that’s the way it is.” After his marriage to Lipton ended, Jones had to take a good, hard look at his life—which is when he realized the truth. He thought about his seven children and how that running had been at their expense, and threw himself into fatherhood in a big way. Given that Quincy the documentary exists as a lengthy, carefully woven love letter from daughter to father, it would seem he succeeded. “I have no hair no because I’ve got six daughters. I had the first one at 19 and the last one at 60. I’m an equal-opportunity employer,” he jokes, before seriously saying, “I love them from the bottom of my soul. I not only love them, but I like them and respect them.” It would have been hypocritical of him to teach his children not to fail, so

he didn’t. He taught them to enjoy life and to love themselves—which, when it comes down to it, is the best lesson anyone could really possibly learn, isn’t it? “I think the main thing I always pushed with them was that you’ve got to know exactly who you are, and that’s not so easy. Once you’ve found out who you are, fix the parts you don’t like. There’s a statute of limitations on all childhood traumas. Fix your stuff and move on and enjoy your life. They all did, too,” he says with a smile. “Rashida, I told her I wouldn’t let her be a professional until she finished school, and she went to Harvard; she finished at 21. She goes for knowledge, then the heart.” What he could also give his kids was unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. He taught them to love travel, strapped their tiny little bodies into planes—with a nanny, of course—and literally gave them the world. He also gave them the gift of music in a way that only Quincy Jones could. “They heard the best music in the world when they were growing up— Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder,” he says. “They used to see these guys when they were recording, you know. Kidada was controlling Michael [Jackson] all the time. Two years old, giving him orders―‘Don’t do that; don’t put those things around here.’ It was so funny, so ghetto.” Does Quincy show the young Kidada bossing around the King of Pop? No, unfortunately, but Jones has lived a long life, and even with 800 hours of footage to weed through, it was impossible to show everything. “Honey, I’m 85 years old. You can’t put that all in one film. It’s too long a life to get into in two hours,” he notes, before pausing a beat. “[The weird thing is], I feel like I’m just starting now.” In that case, he’s chronically starting over, constantly reinventing himself. As he says, “It’s so many different journeys, honey. Writing for film, writing for TV, records, it’s all different.” And of course, that journey—unlike the film—continues on. Quincy delves into two additional health scares—a more recent diabetic coma and a blood clot—and ends on a high note, showing Jones producing the 2016 National Museum of African American History and Culture opening (and as a fun aside, it shows Jones sweet-talking Colin Powell into attending within minutes). That two-year gap between the opening and the film’s release doesn’t show that Jones still hasn’t slowed down. He’s currently working on both a film and Broadway show on the history of black music; has formed a partnership with Donatella Versace to open music supper clubs in hotels around the world, the first of which, Q’s Bar & Lounge, is located within the Palazzo Versace in Dubai; he has a line with Buscemi shoes; a line of headphones with Harman/JBL; and is working on two
serious passion projects, the first of which is foreign territory—he is creating a rock opera with a virtual-reality component. (As another fun aside, his cousin, Jaron Lanier, created VR. Lanier also happens to be related to Jane Fonda—as is Jones. The world is so big yet so very small at the same time.) He’s also working on a film that hits very close to home: the tale of the Policy Kings, an illegal gambling racket that existed in 1930s Chicago, which coincided with his real-life experience growing up in the era of the Jones Boys. “It is a fascinating story that not many people know about, but I know the story intimately because it was a part of my childhood. The Jones [Boys] were the biggest gangsters in the city. When [gangster Al] Capone found out how much money they were making, he ran them out of town and took over their businesses,” he explains. “Because our name was also Jones, and my father did carpentry for them, he didn’t want to take the risk that Capone’s people didn’t know we weren’t related to the Jones Boys, and that’s when he packed us up and moved us to Seattle. The irony of course being that it was that move to Seattle and the discovery of music that changed my life. Up until that point, I probably would have followed a rather nefarious path. Now, I’m doing a movie about the Jones Boys.” Call it life or call it luck, but that’s the Quincy Jones magic, taking lemons and making lemonade. His success is all sweet, never bitter. As a result, it should go without saying that he has no regrets. “Not a one,” he says firmly. “Je ne regrette rien [‘I regret nothing.’]. Mistakes help you learn, and I’ve made a lot of them, especially when you play as hard as you work.” Life was, is and will be good for Quincy Jones, make no mistake about that. If there’s anything that Quincy has captured, it’s that for this iconic music man, life is always beautiful. “I’ve been fortunate to have lived a very full life,” he admits. “When I was in [Washington] D.C. for the concert to celebrate the first Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday in 1985, a family approached me, and the grandmother had a copy of Sinatra at the Sands, the mother had a copy of The Dude and the daughter had a copy of Thriller. It was a really gratifying moment. Different generations know me for different things, so perhaps each generation will learn a little more about [my] entire body of work. Someone once called me the ‘Ghetto Forrest Gump’ that has spanned seven decades in music… I’ve been around for a long time… I’m very happy being alive and being vertical and having the experiences I’ve had.” With that mischievous, purely Quincy Jones charm he adds, “But they promised me 30 more years, so I’ve got time. Honey, what a life it is—and I’m not done yet.” @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 21

H PE Philanthropist Barbara Davis is back to host her 32nd Carousel of Hope Ball in Beverly Hills. BY LAURA SCHREFFLER
BARBARA DAVIS IS A HARD FIGURE TO
miss. Biennially in Los Angeles for the past 40 years, the 87-year-old philanthropist has descended the stairs at The Beverly Hilton swathed in a floaty, dreamy, candy-colored organza gown (typically an Oscar de la Renta). Surrounded by her A-list bevy of friends—who include Hillary Clinton, Stevie Wonder, George Clooney, Sir Sidney Poitier and Clive Davis (no relation)—Davis hosts her 32nd Carousel of Hope Ball, the charity event of the season, raising awareness for diabetes and raising funds for clinical care and research at her Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes. At each event (which also takes place in Denver every other year), where it originated, she also honors one special individual for his or her humanitarian efforts and continued support of the cause. This year, that person is Robert De Niro, who will receive the “Brass Ring Award”—named as such for the elusive brass ring that carousel riders would try to catch when the ride first rose to popularity. We sat down with Davis to discuss the cause, her decision to honor De Niro and why being the belle of this particular ball is the most significant moment of all. Why is curing children’s diabetes such a personal cause for you? Curing diabetes is such a personal cause for me because my daughter Dana, at age 7, 22 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com
developed Type 1 diabetes, and it became the most important thing in my life. I was shocked, frightened and determined to give her a long, healthy life. I knew nothing about diabetes and certainly learned very quickly what a devastating disease it is, which can rob a person of their sight, their limbs; amputation is a terrible complication of diabetes, as is heart disease. Diabetes can also cause heart attacks, heart disease, blindness, strokes and kidney failure. So to save my daughter and other children like her, this was why Marvin, my late husband, and I started the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes where we now treat 7,000 patients from around the world annually, and we have made the most wonderful advances.
Where did the event’s title come from? I dreamed of children riding a carousel, and when they reached the brass ring we would have a cure for diabetes, so we named the event The Carousel of Hope Ball. We are reaching for that brass ring, and it is getting closer and closer. How do you decide who to honor each year? I carefully think of people—who are the people who are most concerned in helping others— and we have reached the decision each year on the most caring person who would make a difference. Every honoree has made a huge difference in caring for and bringing health to everybody not just in the United States but around the world. Why did you choose Robert De Niro to receive your Brass Ring Award this year? Robert is a great actor and a great philanthropist, and has done so many wonderful philanthropic deeds. He is truly a great talent.

What did he say to you when he found out he was receiving the award? He said it is a great honor to receive this award and was very pleased to be asked and to be able to take time out of his schedule to accept. I am very proud to have him as a talent, as a friend and as a person who wants to help others. What’s in store for this year’s gala? It will be a very, very special evening, the 40th anniversary of the Carousel Ball, and I would have to say, “That’s what friends are for.” We have the same people today who started with us years ago. Jay Leno as the emcee, David Foster doing the music, George Schlatter as the producer, Clive Davis and Quincy Jones as the music directors and Sharon Stone is doing this year’s auction. These are all friends who have been together since the first Carousel Ball, and this is our 32nd Carousel Ball over four decades. I am so proud to say these people are truly dear friends. They have lent their talents, and we are proud to announce that they are very truly very dear friends. Joining David Foster’s music presentation are Babyface, who has been with us many times, and the incredible Gladys Knight. We promise you a beautiful evening, and I am so proud to say that the film industry, the television networks and the music companies are tremendously supportive and have also been with us from when we started. I give thanks to all of them, and I can’t tell you how much their loyalty means to the fight against diabetes and bringing us so much closer to that brass ring. We are also so honored to welcome new sponsors and are so honored that they want to help us find a cure for diabetes. Thank you―thank you―we will have a cure, and until then, we have so many wonderful ways of delivering insulin and caring for
our patients. This has been a beautiful journey. And again, I say thank you. Why do you think Carousel of Hope is often named one of the top benefits in Southern California—what sets it apart? I think we all work so hard, and we have all been together for so many years. We are a family. It is the Ball’s 40th anniversary. Has there been one particular event in Carousel of Hope’s history that has the most significance for you? Why? Which one? I would say that every Carousel Ball has been very significant; perhaps I could say that the very first Carousel Ball will always be very special in my heart because Frank Sinatra was performer No. 1. So many people and friends came out of the goodness of their hearts to support us, including President Reagan and President Gerald Ford. I really saw my dream become a reality, I thank everyone from day one until today. Among other people to thank, I thank you Sir Elton John, I thank you, Sir Paul McCartney, I thank the late Whitney Houston, my beautiful Stevie Wonder, my dear, dear friend Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Sting, Jennifer Lopez, Andrea Bocelli, Celine Dion, George Clooney, Maria Shriver… so many people who have such busy lives and such huge successes, they gave of their talents and from their hearts to fight this terrible disease, which is a fight that we are winning. Were you always driven by a need to be philanthropic? I would have to say yes―I always love to reach out and help someone who needs a hand. What to you is the greatest luxury in life? My husband, my children, my grandchildren and my great-grandchildren.

Director David Yates is back for more box office magic this fall with his sixth Wizarding World film, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. BY LAURA SCHREFFLER
DAVID YATES IS A MAN WHO MAKES
magic. He may not cast actual spells, but what he does on the silver screen is absolute wizardry—especially when the subject matter is J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. On November 16, the British director’s sixth magical film with Warner Bros. Pictures, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, hits theaters, and we’re certain that he’ll strike box office gold as he’s done with every film since 2007’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The film— whose screenplay was written by Rowling herself—features an ensemble cast led by Eddie
Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol and Ezra Miller, with the new additions of Jude Law and Johnny Depp. We chatted with Yates about his all-star cast, his extreme directing style and what it really takes to make a magical motion picture. This is your sixth Wizarding World film. How has this fantasy world evolved for you since you started shooting Order of the Phoenix in 2006? It has become much more grown-up, less focused on school and more on the world beyond it.
What do you enjoy most about working alongside J.K. Rowling? Many things. She’s incredibly inventive yet rarely precious; she’s interested in the best and most interesting way to get her story to the screen. And she is very down-to-earth, despite her global success. Above all, it’s fun and enjoyable working with her. You have a new crop of wizards and witches in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Who—most surprisingly to you—integrated him or herself into this magical world?

Actually, it wasn’t much of a surprise, but Jude Law brought a warmth and a wit to the role of Albus Dumbledore. That’s quite a pair of shoes to fill for any actor, and I felt from our auditions that Jude would bring something very special to this iconic character. Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald is perfect casting, but how was it decided that Jude Law should play a young Albus Dumbledore? What about him made you think “Dumbledore”? Jude has a charm, warmth and a wit, and I could see Jude and Johnny working well opposite each other. This first story only hints at and glimpses their past relationship. Future films will explore it more fully. Of the six films you’ve directed, which has been your personal favorite experience to shoot and why? This is my eighth motion picture, and of the six films I’ve directed in this particular series, I would say this is my favorite, next to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part Two. It was good to be invited back into the wizarding world with the first Fantastic Beasts film. You put a family together when you set a film up, and its success in 2016 gave us
the opportunity to come back together again and to explore how we could build on what we had established with film one. With a sequel, you’re reunited with people you love working with, and we all shared an ambition for what this series of films can deliver for a global audience. Because you’re responsible for how J.K.’s world manifests itself on the big screen, is it impossible to take the magic of the films home with you? I always take the film home with me. Making movies on any scale isn’t a job, it’s a life, and some days you don’t quite stop thinking about them until your head touches the pillow at night, and then you dream about the movie... [Harry Potter’s] Emma Watson once said that you like to push the cast and crew to physical and emotional extremes. Would you say that’s true? Making movies on this scale pushes everyone to extremes; they are marathons and require a certain stamina and maturity to get them to the screen. For Emma at that time, it was an inevitable process to ask more and more of her and Dan [Radcliffe] and Rupert [Grint]
as the films got more grown-up, and they all responded to that challenge. How do you get your actors to push themselves, specifically, and take risks? My main goal is to get them to forget the process around them and focus in on the moment and the relationship they’re experiencing as the character. I’m a big fan of multiple takes without stopping, so we can find things in the moment as we work that surprise us all. It seems shocking that out of nine Wizarding World films, only one won an Oscar, and only three total were nominated. What are your thoughts on that, given that the movies are some of the top-grossing of all time? Awards are lovely, but we really make these movies to entertain audiences, and if they are successful, it means we have succeeded in that goal. That said, it is always terrific when aspects of the work we do get acknowledged. A lot of love and attention to detail is poured into every moment of these films by everyone who is working on them; we all feel the responsibility of telling these stories in the most beautiful way possible. @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 25

and Karl Lagerfeld showed their FENDI Spring/Summer 2019 colletion at Milan Fashion week, where supermodels Kendall Jenner, Kaia Gerber, Bella Hadid and Gigi Hadid all walked the runway. Combining a utilitarian but feminine aesthetic, the collection featured a palette of sage, cognac, burgundy, sand, white, orange and denim, as well as a variety of fabrics, such as summer wool, leather and PVC. Though the collection drew inspiration from masculine shapes, it still felt distinctly feminine, embracing the woman’s body and accentuating it with fitted silhouettes and accessories like waist-cinching belt bags. The eye-catching FF logo had a bold presence on the runway, embossed in leather, printed on PVC and knitted into wools. The Spring/Summer 2019 Accessories Collection, designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi, showcased the iconic Peekaboo bag and its DeFender waterproof shell. For added interest, the bags have interchangeable handles and “novelty utility pockets, echoing tool belts with pouches.” Additionally, FENDI’s famed Baguette bag made a welcomed appearance, donned in sequins and even in a new, oversized shape with soft, embossed logo leather—the same leather on the new Upside Down folding envelope bag, which also features an FF logo clasp.

AS GUCCI CONTINUES TO PUSH THE
envelope in design, it’s no surprise that its Spring/Summer 2019 show for Paris Fashion Week was nothing short of electric. Set in Le Palace—a famous former Parisian nightclub—the show’s front row brought out an impressive group of A-list guests. The list included Jared Leto, Faye Dunaway, Salma Hayek Pinault and her husband, FrançoisHenri Pinault, who also happens to be the Chairman and CEO of Kering Group—the brand’s parent company, as well as the parent company of several other luxury fashion brands, such as Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Bottega Veneta and Ulysse Nardin, among others. Under designer Alessandro Michele’s direction, the brand has taken a walk over to the wild side, with eye-catching prints and the boldest of colors together with unexpected shapes and textural combinations. And this collection, was no exception. The audience certainly enjoyed an incredible show that included looks reminiscent of the 1970s disco era, with standout pieces that included a sleeveless denim jacket with a close-up image of Dolly Parton on the back, a Mickey Mouse bag, a Janis Joplin-inspired felt hat, GG logo suiting and even one look that included a live bird. Guests were taken aback yet again with a surprise performance from audience member Jane Birkin, who sang her 1983 hit “Baby Alone in Babylone.” Though Le Palace seemed like an offbeat choice for a fashion show, it turned out to be the perfect setting for what was indeed, a show, showcasing the wonderful world of Gucci.

Young,Wild & Free For the woman who wants to make her mark in the world, in comes Dior with its Cruise 2019 Collection. Designed by the House’s first female artistic director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, she drew inspiration from the escaramuzas—traditional Mexican female horse riders—who participate in the charreada—Mexico’s version of an equestrian performance, showcasing impressive and challenging routines to the crowd. Using rich materials, such as toile de Jouy, lace, knits, tulle and Japanese cotton, the collection emphasizes the intersection of two worlds, both equally important in the world of Dior: deep-rooted tradition and liberating freedom. The heroine wears full skirts with waist-cinching belts and fitted jackets, which exude her femininity and her strength simultaneously. The iconic Dior Saddle Bag reappears in the story, serving as the perfect accessory for the heroine along with her chic and practical combat boots, allowing her to blaze a trail forward for the next generation to come, rather than stand still and wait for someone else to do so. While remembering the legacy of those that came before her and embracing the possibilities of her bright and bold future, she is not a rule-breaker; rather, she is a rule-maker. WATCHES
LIST
THE HISTORY OF THE MINUTE REPEATER GOES BACK
to a time before electric light. As lighting an oil lamp was quite some work, watchmakers built repeating mechanisms in pocket watches so each could sound the time on demand. The invention of the minute repeater was claimed by both Edward Barlow and Daniel Quare, but it was Quare who obtained a patent for it in 1687. Initially, watches equipped with a repeating mechanism used bells to chime the time, later to be replaced with a wire gong, which took up less space. These weren’t minute repeaters, at first, but quarter repeaters, chiming the time to the closest quarter. When the transition was made from pocket watches to wristwatches, the repeater mechanism became sparsely used. The limited space of a wristwatch made it more difficult to create, and the introduction of electric light also made the demand for this complicated, and thus expensive, type of watches nearly vanish completely. It was only after the quartz crisis that a renewed interest emerged for the repeater mechanism. Today, many of the top brands have a minute repeater in their collection, sometimes even combined with other complications, not so much for its practical use, but merely as a testimony of how high the micromechanical art of watchmaking can soar. The quality of a minute repeater is judged by the sound that it is making. This is not only the clarity and loudness of the notes but also the speed that it is chiming at. Such a complication takes a great deal of energy, and when it is playing, it can also negatively affect the amplitude of the watch, and therefore its accuracy. While a minute repeater asks for excellent power management in the movement, the case itself plays an important role, as well. While the material that it is made of has a great impact on the sound of the gongs, you cannot judge a minute repeater on merely that. It is also the way that the case is shaped, as well as the interaction of the other parts that make up the watch. Many manufacturers create something like a “sound chamber” inside the case so that gongs can perform their task at an optimum, and the sound is also (mildly) amplified. However, to perform at an optimum the gongs also need to have time to sound, and for this the “governor” is responsible. This part of the watch determines the speed of the strikes and plays, therefore it is an important part in the magical experience of a minute repeater wristwatch.

could easily pass for steel, yet it demands a hefty premium over the similar-looking metal. What makes white gold watches have a significant “want” factor?
THE SUBTLE BEAUTY OF WHITE GOLD However, that still leaves the question, why not opt for steel when it is available? While the difference between the two metals is subtle, it is significant enough to appreciate the white gold. It has a slightly warmer tone

AN UNDERSTATED-LIFESTYLE CHOICE Over the last few decades, the ages and lives of those able to afford high-end watches crafted from precious metal have changed significantly. It is now a younger generation that is shopping for these kind of watches and they―as well as the generation before them― live a far more active lifestyle. White gold is more in line with current trends than yellow or pink gold. In addition, a watch in white gold often looks more understated and “sportive” than other colors of gold. This is best illustrated by the Breguet Classique 7147, which is regarded as a traditional dress watch. In rose gold, it looks like Abraham-Louis Breguet crafted it himself in the 1800s, giving it a vintage appearance even when it is brand-new. The same watch, with the same dial and fitted with a white gold case, gives it a bit more of a contemporary edge.

Haute and in general and reflects the light in a softer way than stainless steel. When wearing such a watch on a daily basis, this will make a difference in the way you appreciate it, since it just offers that little bit extra―and that is what luxury is sometimes about. Another difference is the weight. A watch in 18 karat white gold will weigh significantly more than the same watch crafted from stainless steel. It is this heft that gives a very pleasant feeling around the wrist, and it in a way confirms that you are wearing something special and precious.

NO CHOICE…. Sometimes, you also simply have no choice. The Rolex Day-Date has no steel option, along with the Nautilus Perpetual Calendar from Patek Philippe. Even with watches where there is a stainless-steel option, the brands are often clever enough to make sure that there is a subtle difference. For example, in dial color or bracelet design, the watches don’t look exactly the same. Those differences can also add to the want factor of white gold, further securing its place in the world of watches.

TIME’S +HAUTE 10 OUTRAGEOUS
L’Amage: HBD Design Studios
SUPERYACHTS FROM THE FUTURE BY DELLVIN ROSHON WILLIAMS
SEPTEMBER IS UPON US, AND IN THE SUPERYACHT INDUSTRY, THAT CAN ONLY MEAN ONE THING:
the Monaco Yacht Show. This is where the world’s best yacht designers get a chance to put forward some of the dynamic concepts to date. But it’s not always about the biggest or the fastest. It’s about raising the bar, improving creativity and pushing boundaries. In that vein, Haute Time takes a look at 10 superyacht concepts that may not be as far off into the future as you think.
+ SHADDAI Shaddai: Gabriele Teruzzi Yachts & Design
Tower of Babel, maybe? Giza Pyramids, anyone? Call it “unique” or “visionary,” but you have to call it something. Either way, no words can do it justice. Shaddai, a 152.4m, 38m-tall superyacht is futurism of the tallest order—pun intended. The beach club is perched 38m above the aft deck via a stunning scenographic infinity pool. Gabriele Teruzzi’s design doesn’t just offer panoramic views, it makes you omniscient. Hence, the Hebrew moniker, Shaddai.
+ GHOST
From the designer of Black Pearl, the world’s largest DynaRig sailing yacht, comes the deconstructed 144m M/Y Ghost concept. Ken Freivokh Design brings modern minimalism and flexibility where a tremendously rigid frame system takes care of torsional rigidity. Sliding helipad platforms, opening skylights, a telescopic signal mast forward, a glass pool and a gym are just some of its features. Both hydro and aerodynamic, Ghost is designed for transparency and optimal underwater efficiency. Balconies and flying bridges link various spaces throughout the vessel, allowing a revolutionary lightsensitive film embedded within the skin of the yacht to maximize natural light.

+ L’AMAGE
At 190m LOA, L’Amage is one of the world’s most advanced superyacht projects, not only because it dwarfs the 180.61m Azzam, but it utilizes diesel engines and gas turbine (CODAG) technology, generating 95000hp at a maximum speed of 32 knots. Designed by Hamid Bekradi, director of design at HBD Studios, L’Amage has a beam of 28.6m, accommodates 28, has 14 staterooms, an owner’s apartment and fits a crew of 70. Elegant and sober, L’Amage is the first superyacht to incorporate Kymeta® flat panel satellite technology, completely replacing satellite domes. Oh, did I mention the outdoor fire pit, an extended transom with three sliding piers and a travel range of 6,000 nautical miles?
+ GALAXY OF HAPPINESS
This 53m trimaran is arguably the most futurist and forward-thinking of all designs, not least because it literally looks like a spaceship: Two outrigger hulls are used for increased stability and uses almost half the energy of a monohull. Galaxy of Happiness is powered by twin 2,600hp MTU diesel engines backed up by 120k W electric engines, pushing Galaxy to a top speed of 30 knots.
Galaxy of Happiness: Thiery Ameller Photography
In true Galaxy fashion, sofas, sun pads, a petite sundeck, a superyacht spa pool and LCD glass windows make up for not having an upper deck. But it is Galaxy’s combined fuel efficiency and speed that will take yacht owners and designers far into the future. Galaxy was designed by Jean-Jacques Coste of Blue Coast Yachts, partners with Latitude Yachts. @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 61
+ PROJECT L3
From the collaborative vision of BMT Nigel Gee and McPherson Yacht Design comes Project L3, an 85m refreshingly luxurious take on catamaran yacht design. With an overall length of 85m, the catamaran offers volume more akin to a 100-110m monohull. Such space allows for entertainment and living areas similar to flamboyant land-based architecture and includes some really cool, unique features.
+ TABOO
Project L3: BMT Group
The sundeck sports an open-air fire pit surrounded by generous loungers that provide stunning views of the giant drop-down cinema screen, a feature that is sure to be the main focus of evening entertainment. The wide beam allows for storage of an offshore racing cat and a two-man seaplane. Once deployed, these can be moored against a number of fold-down/extendable beach decks giving easy access to the water. So, yeah.
Is it me, or do next-generation explorers have one for the books with Gill Schmid and Tim Dempers’ 90m superyacht concept, Taboo? From polar escapades to wild ocean adventures, Taboo has enough space for helicopters, super and amphibious cars, a submarine, and—wait for it—a hot air balloon. One-way extensive glass and panoramic views are the perfect complements for 26 guests and 40 crew members enjoying a dip in the superyacht pool after working out in the gym. Talk about breaking the ice! Taboo: Gill Schmid Design

ERA 80: Ricky Smith Designs

“Brokers advised me to ignore convention and to stop trying to please naval architects by presenting conservative concepts. I was advised to show something progressive and innovative,” said designer Ricky Smith. And that is exactly what we get from his 80m über-aerodynamic explorer superyacht, ERA 80. Designed to reduce drag, and in collaboration with Stuart Friezer Marine Naval Architects, ERA 80 has a covered bow. Immediately recognizable by its smooth, non-faceted superstructure, the ERA 80 concept is about taking advantage of both space and privacy. The Smith project features a 13m bean that allows for a Bell 427 or Eurocopter EC145, an owner ’s suite on the upper deck, a VIP and four-guest suite, accommodates 20 and a total crew of 24.
Mauna Kea: RC Designs
+ MAUNA KEA
“New ideas are not invented by anyone but are rather born from a client’s necessity. Those needs are then articulated by someone who has the talent to interpret them,” said designer Roberto Curtó. Result: Manu Kea, a 101m concept named after a Hawaiian volcano of the same name. The largest concept from Roberto Curtó to date, Mauna Kea features a bifurcated aft staircase, two waterslides that melt wonderfully into the main pool and staircase leading to the helipad. Mauna Kea accommodates 12, a crew of 22, a fullbeam private lounge and private Jacuzzi on the owner’s deck.

+BUGATTI DIVO Bugatti unveils its latest model, Divo, at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering in Monterey, California. BY DEYVANSHI MASRANI
just unveiled its latest model, Divo, at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering in Monterey, California. The French super sports car brand gave its latest model an engine power output of 1,500 PS, a 77-pound (35 kilogram) weight decrease and other attributes, allowing it to perform at its optimal level. “When I took up my position at Bugatti at the beginning of the year, I soon learnt that our customers and fans were waiting for a special vehicle which would tell a further story for the brand in addition to the Chiron,” says Stephan Winkelmann, president of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. “The Bugatti team was also very eager to implement a project like this.” The Divo—aptly named for a French racing driver and two-time Targa Florio winner, Albert Divo—brings back the brand’s coach-building tradition, but in a contemporary manner. “The modern interpretation of coachbuilding gave us engineers new freedom,” says Stefan Ellrott, head of Technical Development at Bugatti. “The step that we have taken with the Divo in terms of agility and high-performance cornering dynamics can be compared with the overall development from the Veyron to the Chiron.” With several aerodynamic properties, the newly designed wide front spoiler gives the car an improved cooling performance, better brake airflow and high air mass flow to the engine compartment, via the NACA air duct roof. Its reduced weight, new chassis and suspension settings also make for optimal performance, especially around corners. “The Divo has significantly higher performance in terms of lateral acceleration, agility and cornering,” continues Winkelmann. “The Divo is made for corners.” Though certainly distinguished from the Chiron, the Divo is still easily and instantly recognizable as a Bugatti. This is thanks to the progressive design language used for the high-performance vehicle. “The Divo is a further example of our design philosophy, ‘Form follows Performance,’” notes Achim Anscheidt, director of design, Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. “In this case, the engineers and designers aimed to create a vehicle focusing on cornering speeds and lateral dynamics…The Divo project was also a welcome opportunity for our team to add a modern chapter to the coachbuilding story of Bugatti, which had been so successful in the early years of the brand. Our task was to develop a vehicle which would look different from the Chiron but still be immediately recognizable as a Bugatti. For us designers, this meant that the three key style elements of Bugatti had to remain in place: the horseshoe-shaped front grille, the typical Bugatti signature line along the sides of the vehicle and the characteristic fin that defines the longitudinal axis of the car when viewed from above, which was derived from the Type 57 Atlantic.” Priced at €5 million, the car is limited to a 40-vehicle production, which has already sold out.

The P400e Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle powertrain is the first of its kind for Jaguar and Land Rover, and offers up to 51 km (or 31 miles) of range in all-electric mode. It combines an advanced 296 hp turbocharged four-cylinder Ingenium gasoline engine, together with a 114 hp electric motor, powered by a 13.1 kWh lithium-ion battery. The combination totals a power output of an impressive 398 hp from the four-wheel drive system and allows the driver to hit 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds, as well as a top speed of 137 mph. The charging socket is located on the right side of the car’s grille, behind the Land Rover badge, for charging with the available home charging lead, which connects to domestic power supplies. A full charge may be obtained in under three hours using a 220V dedicated charger, which may be remotely monitored with the Land Rover InControl® Remote™ app. In terms of design, the Range Rover has stayed true to its roots while managing to embrace a modern aesthetic simultaneously. The 2019 model includes the signature clamshell hood, a Gloss Black surround front grille, wide vent blades on the bumper, lower side vent and accent graphics with Satin body-colored and Atlas accent finish design schemes, the rear bumper with the exhaust tailpipe and eye-catching metallic paint colors. “The uncluttered graphic of this Range Rover embodies the cleanliness and quality of design for which this nameplate has become known,” says Gerry McGovern, chief design officer at Land Rover. “By combining iconic visual cues with modern aesthetic touches, such as flush detailing and an emphasis on overall cohesion, this is a luxury SUV like no other.” Buyers may further customize their ride with two available exterior design packages: The Black Exterior Package alters the Jarvik Black design and includes hood and tailgate lettering, grill mesh and inner surround, front tow eye cover, front bumper vent finisher on Autobiography models, door mirror caps, side vent and accent graphics door handle surrounds and tailgate finisher—or the Shadow Exterior Package, which is similar to the former, but does not include the door mirror caps, tow eye cover or tailgate finisher, but does include the Shadow Atlas accent color. All models feature Premium LED Automatic Headlights, with Signature LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL), Power Washers, while Auto High Beam Assist is offered as an optional feature. Combining high-end finishes—including lines, leathers and layers of cushioning—with comfort, the wider front and rear seats maximize the space by offering optimized legroom and reclining features, adjustable via the door panel controls. The 20-way Oxford Leather front seats are perfectly upholstered for the ultimate luxury, while adjustable bolsters are added for additional support, offering cooling and massage functionality. The front seats even offer a Hot Stone massage option, while the rear seats may be folded using the available touchscreen. The Land Rover Comfort Controller smartphone app allows users to control the seat position, massage functions and temperature. “The Range Rover’s interior provides a refined and spacious cabin with high-quality materials that create a truly luxurious experience,” adds McGovern. “By allying wide, comfortable seats with functional everyday stowage and the latest interior technology, we have created a striking and compelling design.” Other noteworthy features include an optional cooler compartment or refrigerator in the front center console, the optional NanoeTM cabin air ionization system to improve air quality and the powered roof sunblind, controlled by the mere swipe of the hand.

DOWNTOWN
DUBAI HEART OF THE CITY established itself as one of the premier districts in Dubai. Often referred to as the ‘“Center of Now,” this is the site of some of Dubai’s most elegant urban homes, from penthouses that overlook stunning panoramas of the city to serviced residences that enjoy the fivestar amenities of leading hospitality brands. As newer districts and neighborhoods come up around Dubai, Downtown remains the anchor that connects them all together with its mix of excellent infrastructure, high-quality properties and the best attractions in the city.
THE HIGHLIGHTS BURJ KHALIFA Without a doubt, the crowning jewel of Downtown Dubai is the Burj Khalifa. The world’s tallest building stands a staggering 2,722 feet high and comprises 167 floors. Putting a futuristic spin on traditional Arabian architectural motifs, the tower is set on a base in the shape of a threepointed star that rises in a spiraling pattern that gives it a unique and imposing silhouette against the Dubai skyline. The first 15 floors of Burj Khalifa are home to the Armani Hotel (one of two in the world, the other being in Milan), while the remaining floors are split between commercial spaces and gorgeous apartments. The penthouses on the upper floors are perhaps the most enviable addresses in the city, enjoying stunning vistas that stretch out to the distant horizon. The Burj Khalifa is also the epicenter of celebrations in the city and is especially renowned for its dazzling fireworks shows on New Year’s Eve. This year, the fireworks were replaced by a light show that has become a nightly staple at the tower with specially themed shows for different events such as Chinese New Year. DUBAI MALL The tallest building in the world is, appropriately, flanked by the largest shopping mall in the world. The Dubai Mall is spread over 5.4 million square feet and four levels, encompassing stores of every category imaginable. One entire wing of the mall known as Fashion Avenue is home to brands such as Burberry and Ralph Lauren, and the mall is also home to the Middle East’s largest Apple store. Aside from its retail outlets, the Dubai Mall contains a large selection of gourmet restaurants, an aquarium and underwater zoo, a 22-screen theater and an indoor theme park that has recently been converted to a virtual-reality park. A number of upcoming residential projects such as Vida Dubai Mall, the Address Dubai Mall and Downtown Views II are ideally positioned so they can look out over panoramic views of the 74 HAUTE LIVING hauteresidence.com
Dubai skyline while benefiting from covered footbridges that provide a direct link to the mall. SOUK AL BAHAR Located adjacent to the Dubai Mall and connected to it by a bridge, Souk Al Bahar is a shopping and dining complex modeled after a traditional Arabian market. It features an exterior and interior design with very traditional design motifs, complemented by contemporary boutique stores and a variety of fine-dining restaurants serving everything from classical French fare to tapas. DUBAI OPERA One of the key pillars of Downtown Dubai, the Dubai Opera first opened its doors in summer 2016 and rapidly grew to be the cultural heart of the city. A stunning blend of Old-World charm and NewWorld innovation, the opera house has an architectural design that draws inspiration from the “dhow,” a traditional sailing vessel used in the Arabian Gulf and a key part of Dubai’s maritime history. The structure of the building resembles the sweeping bow of the boat, jutting out over the Burj Lake. With a seating capacity of 2,000, the opera house has a technologically sophisticated interior that can transform between an auditorium, theatre and event arena courtesy of hydraulic lifts and sliding floors. The Dubai Opera sits adjacent to the Burj Khalifa, enjoying a beautiful view of the superstructure. It is also the focal point of the Opera District, a neighborhood rich in culture that includes upcoming residential projects such as Forte, Act One/Act Two and Grande. MOHAMMED BIN RASHID BOULEVARD Named after the ruler of Dubai and prime minister of the UAE, this is the main thoroughfare of Downtown Dubai, encircling the central district (which includes the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and Opera House) and feeding out to the major roads that crisscross the city. Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard is lined with boutique stores and choice eateries including popular Mediterranean restaurant La Serre Bistro & Boulangerie. The road also passes through the residential area known as Old Town, a cluster of six neighborhoods with a traditional Arabian aesthetic. With its contrasting architectural styles and its central location, Downtown Dubai serves as both a visual and physical link to the newer and older parts of the city. This urban hub is not just a great destination for tourists, but a fantastic neighborhood for residents and a very prime location for investors, as well.

LANDMARK CONVERSIONS
BLENDING OLD AND NEW INTO PERFECTION old and new. Taking the best of the past and marrying it with the benefits of the present almost always produces something close to, if not, perfection. In Europe, buildings often outlive generations and remind us of times gone by. In the United States, a building is considered old after a few years and often becomes deemed teardown-worthy within a few decades. But when buildings are built well, technologically and design-wise, it is hard to deny their value. Renovating old is the new trend that New Yorkers should celebrate. Stern Architects, the worldrenowned architecture firm, is overseeing the restoration of the original architecture and re-imagining the interiors for the residences. Originally designed by Hiss & Weekes and originally constructed in 1908, The Belnord is a superb example of a turn-of-the-century residential building. The property’s new design will feature 95 residences, ranging from two to five bedrooms, situated across 14 floors. In addition, 9,000 square feet of state-of-the-art amenities will be incorporated into the building, and many of The Belnord’s hallmarks― including the courtyard and the exterior architecture―will be restored to their original grandeur with updated features. THE WOOLWORTH TOWER RESIDENCES The celebrated landmark Cass Gilbert-designed Woolworth Building’s top 30 floors have been reimagined into 33 luxury condominium residences, called The Woolworth Tower Residences. The residences that top the building’s 30 floors were designed by renowned architect Thierry Despont, known for his work on the restoration of the Statue of Liberty, makeover of the Ritz Paris Hotel and Carlyle Hotel, and design of the flagship store for Ralph Lauren. Alchemy Properties paid homage to Frank Woolworth by restoring original details to reflect the building’s glory days, including a $22 million-plus restoration of the striking terracotta facade while simultaneously updating residences with modern-day conveniences. 1 08 LEONARD One hundred eight Leonard is a 19th century landmarked building conversion located in Tribeca. Originally constructed in 1894 as the New York Life Insurance Company headquarters, the McKim, Mead & White architectural masterpiece will soon house more than 150 condominium residences within the Italian Renaissance Revival-style exterior. The ornamental majesty offers dramatic details of scale, proportion and volume paired with contemporary design by awardwinning hospitality design firm Jeffrey Beers International.

1 00 BARCLAY One Hundred Barclay Street was originally the headquarters of the New York Telephone Company. Designed by architect Ralph Walker, the 33-story Art Deco condominium was designated a New York City Landmark in 1999 and added to the National Register of Historic places in 2009. Located along the southern boundary of Tribeca, the building offers immediate occupancy and spacious, loft-like residences with bespoke finishes and more than 40,000 square feet of amenities. Highlights include two swimming pools, an 18th-floor lounge with a media room, wine tasting room with private wine storage, children’s playroom, four terraces, fitness center and spa. THE CHATSWORTH The Chatsworth is one of the most iconic and prestigious pre-war buildings on the Upper West Side. Built in 1904, The Chatsworth stands at the base of Riverside Park. The lobby has been completely restored featuring ornate plaster ceilings and dramatic light fixtures. The building is comprised of 58 spectacular residences including one- to five-bedroom homes, as well as penthouses and townhouses. The interiors were redesigned by the renowned firm Pembrooke & Ives and offer expansive floor plans, high ceilings, detailed crown moldings and white oak herringbone floors throughout. Residences are also prewired for upgrades by Intra Home Systems and are equipped with state-of-the-art heating and cooling systems. 12 EAST 88 TH STREET This quintessential pre-war property is located in Manhattan’s most distinguished Upper East Side neighborhood, Carnegie Hill. Twelve East 88th Street was designed nearly a century ago by the famed Gilded Age architect Rosario Candela. Each residence has been expanded and rescaled to meet the needs and tastes of modern residents without sacrificing the quality, history and detail. Updated by renowned design firm Champalimaud, the building also includes updated amenities including a fitness center, children’s playroom and landscaped terrace. 49 CHAMBERS STREET A bank turned into luxury condominiums, 49 Chambers will house 99 lavish apartments. The interiors are by Gabellini Sheppard and feature warm earth tones with bronze, metallic and mirrored tones to create an elegant and luxurious atmosphere. Residents will enjoy lavish amenities including bicycle storage, gracious swimming pool, storage, authentic Turkish hammam bathroom and spa, steam room, sauna room, children’s playroom, yoga and dance studios, gym, movie room, virtual golf and rooftop garden. 36 GRAMERCY PARK EAST The only pre-war condominium facing Gramercy Park, 36 Gramercy Park East was built in 1908 by James Gordan Riley. HAPPILY Everafter—a curated style community for kids and teens—arrives in LA. BY JARONE ASHKENAZI
and her husband, Haro Keledjian, both former founders and buyers of INTERMIX, everafter is a shop for the modern parent, kids and teens, offering the coolest trends with incredible, personalized service. Everafter was founded in New York City in April 2017 with the first store opening in Tribeca, and after its instant success, they decided to open their second shop in Brentwood inside the Brentwood Country Mart in May of 2018. “Our goal was to open everafter in familyfocused neighborhoods, and we specifically targeted Brentwood for that reason,” says Sloane Keledjian. “We are a neighborhood onestop shop, not a big-box retailer. Knowing our clients and being immersed in the community is of utmost importance to us.” The inspiration for opening the store came in August 2016 when Sloane Keledjian and Keledjian became parents and learned they had a ton of baby clothes and wanted a boutique for their growing kids. They wanted a place that would be a fun, interactive,

From the interactive photo booth, a customized nail bar and ongoing weekly events, everafter is a home away from home for kids to hang, have fun and shop. “We’re inspired every day by the kids around us, including our own three girls,” notes Sloane Keledjian. “Finding on-trend clothing, shoes, accessories, you name it, at a range of prices, all at one shop did not exist, so our job is to continue to bring the best assortment of merchandise to kids and teens from New York to L.A. and everywhere in between with everaftershop.com.” With hand-picked from vendors all around the world, everafter’s elevated offerings, from pillows to crazy aprons, putty to notebooks, provide parents the perfect gift for any occasion. “We’re constantly searching for the next “it” items. have too many of for your gorgeous new little one, it’s baby blankets. Not only do all moms know that back-ups with anything child-related is key, there’s something to be said about shopping for multiples of the item you’re going to want to wrap them up in, all cozy and warm, nearly 24 hours of the day. With one in the bassinet, another in the crib, an option to complete your cozy carriage style and another for the rocking chair at home, not only will your baby blankets be used to their fullest potential, but they’re certainly out in full view, all the time. As such, we want to make sure that your baby blanket collection reflects the chic personal style of both your own personal wardrobe and that of your home. And, might we add, these designers have nailed it when it comes to that. What’s more, many of our favorite baby blankets, made of wool, cotton, cashmere, and more are most certainly going to be turned into everyday throws when our babies grow too large to be personally swaddled in the soft knits we’ve stocked up on. From Hermès, Dior, Ralph Lauren and more, these are the baby blankets you should be adding to your wish list this season.

Cost of Living Survey, Singapore, Paris, Zurich and Hong Kong are among the 10 most expensive cities in the
world. Check out the full list of affluent locales and discover where to enjoy a
luxuriously lavish stay in the world’s most culturally rich cities.
PARIS
PENINSULA PARIS The Peninsula Paris is a hotel that truly embodies haute living. Its prime location—just steps away from storied landmarks like the
Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Élysées—is just one of its assets. Its overall opulence is another. The property’s top suites—the
Historic Suite, Katara Suite and Peninsula Suite—are all inspired by
haute couture. The latter, at 3,425 square feet, is the largest and most decadent, dotted by rich silks and brocades by Prelle, trimmings by Declercq and traditional carpets courtesy of Tai Ping. For all the Parisian feels, though, stay in the Rooftop Garden Suite, an
of the Eiffel Tower. Another way to enjoy the City of Lights venture is through the brand’s experiential Peninsula Academy, which is
offering up a VIP golf package. Guests will receive member access to three prestigious and highly sought-after exclusive clubs in
Paris—Chantilly Golf Club, Fontainebleau Golf Club and SaintCloud Golf Club, which overlooks the Eiffel Tower—including
an 18-hole round of golf, professional caddie, ground round-trip
transportation to and from the course of choice, as well as a threecourse meal at the course’s clubhouse. Ooh la la, indeed. 19 Avenue Kléber, 75116 Paris, France

TEL AVIV
THE SETAI TEL AVIV Perched on the Mediterranean Sea on the edge of the ancient city of Jaffa is The Setai, a new luxury hotel that opened its doors to much fanfare this year. The
property was initially constructed as a fortress during the Crusader kingdom’s rule over Jaffa in the 12th century and as a result, its five-building complex, referred to locally as the “Kishle,” or “jailhouse” in Turkish, is among the
most important properties in Israel from a historical, cultural and architectural standpoint. Modern luxuries meet the historic past here: Artifacts uncovered during the extensive archaeological digs pre-renovation are prominently displayed throughout the hotel, while guest rooms feature rich walnut
furnishings and white sea stone from the building’s original structure; spear-
tipped bars remain outside the windows of many guest rooms as a charming
reminder of the building’s past life. Guests should make sure to check out the hotel’s full-service spa, which includes a traditional Turkish hammam and an extensive menu of classic massages and Eastern-inspired treatments, its fully
equipped gym and its breathtaking rooftop infinity pool, which offers some of the most majestic views of the Tel Aviv skyline imaginable.

IN THE CITY OF ANGELS, DINERS HAVE MORE
than their fair share of healthy dining options—from vegan and vegetarian eateries to poke shops galore, the West Coast crowd has no shortage of places to keep their diets in check. But what if you’re just craving splurge-worthy comfort food? Now, that’s harder to find. That’s why when the famed hospitality crew the h.wood Group announced that its newest venture would incorporate Texas-style brisket, beef and pork ribs, people paid attention. It turns out that John Terzian and Brian Toll, the brains behind L.A. hot spots Delilah, The Nice Guy, Bootsy Bellows, The Peppermint Club, Poppy, SHOREbar and Petite Taqueria are now adding SLAB to the lineup, in partnership with legendary chef (and Instagram sensation) Burt Bakman. Bakman’s knack for cooking the perfect brisket was first uncovered upon debuting Trudy’s Underground Barbecue from his Studio City backyard, attracting the masses during the evenings for his home-cooked meals. The key to his cooking is simple yet perfected down to a science—highlighting smoke, salt and pepper and fat— and knowing just how much to trim and how to time it to get it just right. After serving up his signature Southern-style cuisine at a handful of Los Angeles pop-ups, he’s now opening his first-ever restaurant with the h.wood Group. And given its track record and his esteemed reputation, it’s poised to be a hit among the L.A. squad that’s simply looking for good comfort food and a hip environment to enjoy it, expecting to draw the likes of A-listers like Drake, Justin Bieber, Hailey Baldwin, the KarJenner clan and more. The menu is limited but nonetheless mouth-watering, with highlights including Bakman’s signature Sliced Brisket, Pork Spare Ribs, Pastrami and Pulled Pork, Sausage, Burt’s BBQ Sandwich, Roasted Mary’s Farm ½ Chicken and splurge-worthy sides like Baked Beans, homemade Potato Salad and Cole Slaw, Mac N’ Cheese, Grilled Corn on the Cob, Pickled Vegetables and Collard Greens. Coldwell Banker’s No. 1 real estate agent Chris Cortazzo discusses the latest real estate market trends of Malibu and what makes the breathtaking West Coast city so special. BY ALEJANDRA TENORIO
AS COLDWELL BANKER’S NO. 1 MALIBU REAL ESTATE AGENT,
Haute
Chris Cortazzo has over two decades of exceptional, high-end real estate experience in the Southern California market. A native of Malibu, Cortazzo’s extensive knowledge of the area, market trends and lifestyle ensure that he is able to offer clients the highest degree of service by perfectly matching clients to their ideal properties. “The trick to success in real estate,” Cortazzo says, “is to love and embrace every minute of it with a strong work ethic and a high level of integrity and respect.” Unafraid and eager to be involved in every stage of the buying process, Cortazzo excels at navigating the most challenging situations while negotiating the best deals that he can for his clients--no matter the price point. With over $5 billion in sales, an outstanding repertoire of past and current listings, and a pristine knowledge of market trends, Cortazzo reigns as Coldwell Banker’s elite top 1% of real estate agents nationwide. When asked what he thinks sets him apart from the competition, Cortazzo explains that the key to success is not seeing yourself as competition, but rather market knowledge is invaluable, and he knows his market. Haute Living caught up with the real estate mogul to discuss the latest Malibu market trends, what homebuyers are looking for in today’s market and more. Let’s talk about your market, Malibu. What trends do you currently see happening in the real estate market and where do you think the market will be in five years? There has been a renaissance in Los Angeles as a whole over the last few years. This has made Los Angeles one of the most sought-after places to live. Malibu has been a major beneficiary because it offers the best Los Angeles has to offer, the beach lifestyle and easy access to everything. This will only benefit the Malibu market in the coming years. What advice would you give someone looking to relocate to Malibu? Spend some time in Malibu if you are not already familiar with the Malibu market. Get to know the various areas and see what is the right fit for you; each has its own unique characteristics.

What are homebuyers looking for in today’s market that they maybe were not looking for or knew how to ask for before? Homebuyers are much more specific in their tastes and styles. It really goes back to matching them with a property they can see themselves living in. It requires curating what you show them to create choices rather than what’s available.

What investment opportunities does Malibu offer, and how would you advise clients on how to proceed with these opportunities? There are great investment opportunities for anyone looking to purchase income properties. Malibu remains a destination location with a strong rental market. What makes Malibu so special? You go anywhere in the world and mention Malibu, and people will light up. It is a lifestyle that most people dream about, with year-round sun in a beach atmosphere. Describe Malibu in three words. Lifestyle, beach, community. What are the best drinking, dining and shopping spots? So many incredible places to choose from—there is nothing you would want that could not be found in Malibu.

THE LUXURY DEVELOPMENT ONE THOUSAND MUSEUM RESIDENCES,
located in the heart of Downtown Miami, is one of Miami’s most anticipated project openings. It is significant because it’s the esteemed, late architect Zaha Hadid’s first and final residential tower in the Western Hemipshere, and brings unparalleled luxury, stunning architecture, world-class amenities and unbeatable service to its residents in an atmosphere that is truly iconic. Aside from the fact that the project is remarkable from a developmental and architectural standpoint, it’s also poised to be one of the most prestigious places to live in Miami, offering only 83 total residences that allow its homeowners to have a unique, service-oriented experience. One factor of this is One Thousand Museum Residences’ partnership with Haute Living to launch an exclusive mobile application, offered exclusively to its residents. STEVE CATSMAN STEVE CATSMAN TELLURIDE REAL ESTATE, CHRISTIE’S 970-729-0100 steve@catsman.com catsman.com
A long time Telluride resident and real estate professional, Steve Catsman has been a top broker since 1981. He was a Founding Broker in Telluride Real Estate Corp. in association with the Telluride Ski and Golf Company. He developed Telluride properties such as Gray Head Wilderness Preserve – where you can enjoy fishing, biking, hiking, nordic skiing, tennis and horseback riding. Whether you are interested in buying or selling Telluride Real Estate or any opportunities in the Telluride region for luxury homes, ranches, ski-in/ski-out, large or small condos, let Steve and his team go to work for you. Acclaimed for his authentic character, enlist Steve to be your local source here in Telluride.
Sunset Ridge’s sense of arrival can only be described as an awe-inspiring cliffside home situated on a private peninsula with breathtaking mountainous panoramas with room to roam (adjacent to pvt Gray Head trail system.) The residence’s bold, yet simplistic, linear architecture naturally draws a first-time visitor to a glass, entryway door offering a first hint of the refinement of finishes and beyond. The owner along with the renowned Aspen Architect, Bill Poss, have artfully designed a residence that not only frames the view, but seemingly integrates the mountains as an intrinsic element to the structure. Overlooking a pond reflecting the mountain peaks beyond and fed by a cascading stream running beneath the master suite bridge over waterfalls to the pond below, finishes and appointments were painstakingly and globally sourced by the design team.
