seemed to just to carry on from where they left off at the end of 2015.

At our first gathering we welcomed the following to the school and wished them a happy and successful time in our learning community; Lucas Skipper (Y8), Kota Tyson (Y6), Phynix Lagden (Y3), Curtis McKay (Y1), Georgia Illsley-Slape (Y1) and Bailey McLeanWaltho (Y1).

The memo sent home on 2 Feb to parents indicated that students have been placed in interim learning areas pending a roll review with the Ministry of Education as the numbers indicate a potential increase to staffing levels.

Clearly these things take a wee while to work through but we are working to resolve the attendant issues as quickly as we can.

Although no date is yet fixed on the calendar, we hope to gather for the first parent/teacher meeting to preview the year and look at how best the learning partnerships can be advanced during 2016. Keep an eye out for a date – a flyer will herald the event and format, the school’s Facebook page will also spread the word.

Stationery and all the attendant activity seems to have largely been worked through and now it is a matter of making good use of it all. Students are welcome to bring their own digital device with parental permission of course. Teachers will help set them up on Office 365 as each student has their own account and thus entitled to download multiple versions of Office (Suite) 365.

Senior students will continue to use OneNote both at home and school as their main platform.

This area will be worth looking at a little later in Feb. Just in case parents might be thinking about providing a digital device for their child then perhaps they might follow this general rule of thumb… a tablet in the early years then moving over time to a device with a stylus and keyboard in later years.

Notebooks/Laptops in the senior years are also fine. Hard drives do not have to be huge as cloud storage these days is proving stable enough and should larger files (ie graphics) be used in the future, an external drive can easily and cheaply be added.

Clearly internet access at school is monitored and quite fast over a fibre/wireless network.

Access at home and when mobile will vary somewhat but over time it seems this will become like the phone, a ubiquitous necessity. Being connected (Broadband) in this way provides all those at home with the world at their fingertips. Of course the key competencies including literacy, numeracy, thinking, managing-self, relating to others etc etc still form the foundation for learning and increasingly, digital tools (wireless and mobile) support this learning. Exposure and access to an increasingly complex world of information and making both sense and use of it go hand-in-hand in the 21st Century. Parents and caregivers are very welcome to discuss these issues with members of staff.

TRIEENIAL TRUSTEE ELECTIONS MAY/JUNE 2016 These come around faster than you think and the Havelock School Board of Trustees has three of its five parent representative positions involved. The common date of 3 June is likely to be the actual election date across schools and so by 27 April the current board will have appointed a Returning Officer. The Main Roll will close 4 May and nominations will be called/open from 6 May. Nominations will close 20 May with papers sent by 25 May votes counted 9 June and Board takes office 10 June.

Perhaps over the summer break you have considered whether this might be a way for you to contribute to Havelock’s school. Although the labels might seem a little general or even obscure, they relate to broad and interconnecting areas of the curriculum ie science, health, science and social studies.

MINIBALL TERM 1 2016 Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 Mondays 3:45 pm – 4:30 pm from 15 February to 11 April (8 weeks - not Easter Monday 28 March). The school has fielded teams in the past and should enough indicate interest then a parent/coach will also be needed. Transport is easy with the minibus available. REAP COURSES REAP's aim is to give the Rural Community support, the opportunity to partake in activities in their area and to provide a tutor for the activities chosen by those interested. These courses are being organised by Havelock Community Education Service with REAP support.

EoY 2015 AWARDS and CUPS As is usual by way of celebrating both collective and individual success at the last assembly of the year, those at left were recognised.

Congratulations!

Those who reached the amazing achievement of reading for 300 nights during the year were also recognised and received due reward and certificate in front of the school community. The real rewards are of course the skills gained and the enjoyment. Students who put in the mileage have such an advantage. The students achieving this milestone were Tayla Munro, Jordan Lawrence, Isla Baillie, Josh Steele, Molly-Jo Munro, Hannah Roborgh, Emma McCauley, Skye Gatjens, Liddy Horton-Smith, Towa Urakawa Murdoch, Mia Higgins, Max Skehan, Drew O’Donnell and Ayla McPhee. Ka pai!

Families whose association with the school came to an end were also recognised and were gifted a tree to mark the occasion. Let’s hope the roots put down during the years at Havelock School grow strong and happy people. Best wishes to Halym, Kea, Jacob, Sara and Ella as they take on new adventures.

With the first week or so already behind us it might be timely to discuss with junior the quantities and composition of the tucker bag taken to school to sustain them until they explore the fridge after school. Particularly pupils in Kaituna and Wakamarina require a small item to eat around 10 am generally referred to as brain food. Almost invariably this takes the form of bite-sized chunks of fruit or nuts that are easily handled and consumed. In addition, at lunch the Fonterra Milk for Schools (video clip) scheme gives all students the option of drinking 200 ml of cool UHT milk straight from the fridge. [Opt Out Form]. Teachers keep an eye on what pupils consume during the day and at lunchtime. Advice from the school may be found here at Info Central. HAVELOCK MUSSEL AND SEAFOOD FESTIVAL NEWS Planning for the twelfth Mussel Festival is now well under way and we are sure the public will be delighted with the changes we have made.

The wider range of seafood available is just one of them and, in response to the public wish, ticket prices have been lowered.

The Early Bird ticket price of adults ($25), 12-18 year olds ($15), Family ticket only costing $65 (two adults and two children) and children under 12 (accompanied by an adult) free will make this one of the lowest priced festivals around.

We are also looking forward to seeing the costumes and masks that children under 16 come up with in the Mussel Outfit competition. Entry forms are available at schools or can be downloaded at http://www.havelockmusselfestival.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/ Entry is free and there are good prizes to be won.

There is more to do in the Kidzone this year as well and the very popular mussel shell decorating is back.

The Mussel Pot Mussel Hustle was enjoyed immensely last year and will make a return.

This top town-style obstacle race also attracts prizes for the winning team. While resting from this fun and hilarity, cheer on your favourite entrant in the internationally recognized Kono NZ Mussel Opening competitions culminating with the Guinness Book of Records “Fastest 100” record breaking attempt.

The entertainment is top class with our headline act Anika Moa. Endearing, funny and seriously skilled Mulletman supports as our MC, along with local group A Minor Thing and the ever-popular Avidiva Girls returning.

They really had the crowd up on its feet last year. We broke the excellent news in December that Michael Van de Elzen will be our celebrity Chef and it is great to welcome our own Chris Fortune back to the cooking marquee.

These are just eight of the great reasons why you should be among the crowd at Havelock Mussel Festival 2016. HAVELOCK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION COMMITTEE VACANCY – VOLUNTEER POSITION Due to the change in their employment situation one of our elected members has reluctantly resigned from our committee and we now have a vacancy to fill for a volunteer Committee Member. This vacancy is being filled under the provision of Rule 16.0(b) of the HCA Rules. These rules can be inspected at the HCA Office at 61 Main Road, Havelock.

If you are interested in working with a group of motivated people working to conserve, promote and advance generally the interests and welfare of Havelock and environs, this could be a role for you.

EVENT MANAGEMENT CONTRACTOR Tenders are being sought for an Event Management Contractor for the annual Havelock Mussel & Seafood Festival. The contractor would be responsible for sourcing entertainment, stalls, grounds layout, securing sponsors, obtaining licences, reporting to regular meetings with the Festival Committee. Initially a 12 month contract will be offered with the right of renewal for a further 2 years, if both parties are in agreement.

Tenders close 5 April 2016, this would allow time for any interested parties to attend a festival prior to submitting a tender. The position would start on 1 June 2016.
