THE WORLD NEEDS MORE RANDOM… ACTS OF KINDNESS Stay tuned for an upcoming initiative to bring more smiles to the local community and who knows, throughout the world! In Term 2 students from Kiwi Can schools across the region will kick-start the initiative by doing a good deed for someone they know. This could be anything from holding a door open for someone to bringing their parents breakfast in bed! The smiling recipient will then be encouraged to pass on the goodwill and do something unexpected for someone else, and so on - and in this way we hope the smiles will keep spreading.

But here’s the twist - we want our students to be able to watch the growing ‘ripple-effect’ of what they started. A Facebook page will allow people to report on the kind deeds that were done for them – and we need people’s support with this. More details to come early next term – thanks in advance for helping track the spreading smiles!

DOUBLE DOLPHIN AWARDS The parents of George Robbins, Olivia Johnson and Jack McKay received a congratulatory card sharing the news that one of their children had received a Double Dolphin Award. Kiwi Can leaders Di and Sophia handed the awards out recently at assembly acknowledging that these three students had been recognised as consistently showing leadership.

Congratulations are of course also in order for the three students themselves. Leadership (the right type) is often easily stated but much harder to practice. Nice one!

Earlier in the term Tayla Munro, Max Skehan and Courtney Brownlee received Double Dolphin Awards in recognition of Fairness and Fairplay. Amongst others at assembly this week, awards recognising those who practise the skills/art of conflict resolution will be presented by Sophia and Di. All these awards naturally underline the school’s core values, especially manaakitanga - caring. Congratulations to all.

MUSSEL FESTIVAL – THANK YOU A huge thank you goes out to Jason and Tracey Clark who organised this year’s stall and all the people who helped out at the Mussel Festival. With this help we have raised over $2 000 to go towards the refurbishment of the playground. Thanks also to those who supported the venture with time, labour and items like parsley, lemons, ice, gas and sauces. Many hands… thanks.

MOBILE ORAL HEALTH CLINIC VISITING The Mobile Community Oral Health Clinic is now onsite as usual at Havelock Primary School and will remain operational until Friday 10 April. The brightly decorated Mobile COHC houses two fully equipped clinics each staffed by a dental therapist and a dental assistant supported by on-board modern x-ray, computer and sterilisation facilities. The Community Oral Health Service operates from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm five days per week and fifty weeks per year, giving parents more choice as to when they can accompany their children.

NMDHB Oral Health Educator, Esme Palliser said, “Parents have also enjoyed the ability to group book all their children to be seen at the same visit and talking directly to the dental therapist about good oral health care for their family.”

The Mobile Clinic makes two visits a year to our area and parents are contacted by telephone to arrange appointments for their children. If families need to change these appointments or they have recently shifted or changed their phone number they should phone 0800 833 849.

LIBRARY DONATION The Havelock Library has received a book kindly donated by Mai Chen, (via Ian Cameron) entitled ‘Public Law Toolbox’ 2nd Edition. This book is an indispensable resource for anyone dealing with Government and its officials.

FROM THE COMMUNITY GARDEN Earlier this year we received a phone call that took the volunteers at the Havelock Community Garden by surprise. One of our vegetable recipients had put our name forward to the organisers of the Cawthron Marlborough Awards and the call was to ask us if we would enter. We decided that this would be a useful exercise and in January we were visited by the three who were judging the “Community Innovation” section. They were accompanied by reporter Sophie Preece and you may have seen her piece on the garden in the “Express” in February. We also received a very useful and full report from the judges with several recommendations.

Friday 13 March was the evening for the awards with the function being held in Marlborough Convention Centre. The “Community Innovation” section included some amazing projects.

Being judged along with us were Kiwi Conservation Club (children’s branch of Forest & Bird), Tennyson Inlet Boat Club (restoration of Matai Bay Hut, Marlborough Farmers’ Market and the Renwick School (Solar power Positive Energy Project). The winner was the Farmers’ Market but we received encouragement to enter again next year and with the ideas and benefit gained this year, we probably will.

Meanwhile, away from the glitz and glamour of life in Blenheim, our volunteers continue to work hard every Tuesday. There is always plenty of laughter as we harvest the variety of vegetables for the community worker to take away. This year we have been harvesting fruit from our own trees which have done amazingly well. Thanks to Rachel and Ben for donating them to us.

Now that our stunning dry summer is passing, we are ready to plant broccoli, cabbages and cauliflowers as well as silver beet. Carrots, parsnips and beetroot seeds are germinating and we roll onto the new season…..

THE JUMP - SHORT FILM CASTING AT HAVELOCK We’ve just finished all of our casting and have ended up casting a boy (not from Havelock or Rai as it turns out), but wanted to pass on a huge thank you to the boys, parents and staff who helped us with the casting.

There were actually a couple of standouts from Havelock - great personalities, both engaging and serious, who really stood out on camera, but in the end we were matching a specific family look so had to go with the boy who best suited that particular look.

It was a great experience for Alex and Joe coming in to Havelock and meeting the kids, and of course we also really appreciate your time and energy in setting up the casting and welcoming us into your school.

We’d like to keep you informed with how we go as we’d love to show everyone local the final film when we get it done! No doubt we’ll run into some of the parents or staff when we are down there anyway (April 8th -12th / 13th), but will keep in touch when we are done as well.

KAPA HAKA Within minutes of the first session a few weeks ago Kaiako Merehira Wills had the girls working with poi.

Learning the words and actions simultaneously calls for some serious concentration. The boys too have been working on the school’s haka. Waiata old and new also are sung.

Weekly sessions are helping prepare all students to participate in the Taiopenga later in the year.

CLASSES AT THE MARLBOROUGH TECH CENTRE These got underway promptly at the beginning of the year and have run their first semester of six weeks.

Students from across the region cycle through a wide and comprehensive series of experiences over the course of two years with exposure to some sophisticated ideas and equipment.

The Board of Trustees has just recently resigned the MoA for a further three years ensuring our seniors have access to one of New Zealand’s best centres.

SENIOR SWIMMING AT STADIUM 2000 The five Pelorus Cluster schools gathered at the end of February at Stadium 2000 to compete in numerous events but despite the best attempts of our Year 4 - 8 teams of Fish and Dolphins we only managed to gain fourth place… always hard given the numbers and formula used for events such as these. Still, some performances were particularly notable with Kea Bradley, Ari Tremain, Taylor Clark and Tayla Munro showing only heals in various events. Unfortunately with staff fully occupied as marshals and starters etc, photo opportunities came and went without some snaps being taken. Thanks to Eve Tremain for supplying the photo taken just after the pool was cleared. A great day out with some valuable experience gained in deeper water and longer distances. Thanks to those parents who made the event possible through supplying their vehicles and time - as always, a much appreciated and vital component to these days.

MARLBOROUGH NETBALL 2015 Information regarding Yrs 0 - 4 for this coming netball season.

Yrs 0 – 2 starts Friday June 5th at 4 pm The focus for this age group is exploring netball and developing basic fundamental skills. Each week will start with a 20 minute progressive skill session and then a game of 2 x 10 minute halves. This is a 4-aside game played on 1/3rd of a netball court. Rolling substitutions are allowed. 10 is the maximum number for a team but my observations last year were once the kids are on court they don’t really want to come off and 6 seemed to be the ideal number. Each team requires one adult responsible for them. That person will need to be available on Friday the 29th of May for an hours training which will allow them on court with their team. I will send out more information regarding this after the school holidays.

Year 3 NNZ have a modified programme that we are introducing this season for the year 3 players. It is along the same format as the above programme, skill session first then a 5 aside modified game covering 2/3 of a court. Next year this programme will also include Year 4 students. There will be a demonstration game on opening day May 2nd at 12:15 pm. I will send out more comprehensive information regarding this after the school holidays.

Year 4 It is business as usual for our year 4’s. We understand that for some teams it is necessary to have some Year 3 players to make up a team. We would encourage those children to be involved in the Friday programme as well, for the skill sessions.

Please note that these Year 3’s will not play 7 aside next season and should have this explained to them (and probably more importantly, to their caregivers).

Coaching sessions for new coaches 18th of April at Horton Park 9:30 am – a walk-through of important stuff to know i.e. where registration cards are, how to fill them out, where they go next etc. This will take less than half an hour and straight after the walk through I will deliver a beginner coaches course “My Team and Me” which takes approximately 1.5 hrs.

22nd April at Horton Park 6 pm – as above.

If you can get together a group of 6 or more coaches that are wanting to do a beginning coaching course (they don’t have to be all from the same school) I am happy to come out and run a course at a place and time that suits.

THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEENS - SEAN COVEY

This leadership camp took place for the Year 7/8 students from the Pelorus Cluster of schools recently at Rai Valley Area School. Run by Ross Banbury of the Marlborough Community Development Trust, this two-day residential camp has a programme centred about the seven habits featured in Sean Covey’s “must read” book for teenagers.

This ultimate teenage success guide introduces the following seven habits and the camp set about working through them via adventure based learning ie practical and fun activities underlining the messages in concrete fashion.

• Be Proactive - take responsibility for your life • Begin with the end in mind - define your mission and goals in life • Put first things first - prioritise and do the most important things first • Think win-win - have an everyone-can-win attitude • Seek first to understand, then to be understood - listen to people sincerely • Synergise - work together to achieve more • Sharpen the saw - renew yourself regularly Awards were presented at the conclusion of the camp following presentations from participants these have been videoed and will be given to students to reflect on some more later in the year when follow-up work is done. Chairperson of the Havelock Community Assoc Dean Steele presented the awards.

The camp was free for Havelock students as texts and costs were met by a grant secured in 2013 from Pub Charity.

Students still have the books for some time so if parents haven’t yet caught up with them, there is still opportunity. Ross will be back in later terms this year to revisit and see how the habits are going.

Call 578 4851 to book or go to our website www.blenheimindoorsports.co.nz BIG DAY OUT FOR PELORUS AT PELORUS One of the school’s longer term local curriculum goals is to water-proof students ie give them the skills to survive around and in deep water. To this end the Pelorus students earmarked a day to go bush in the morning and into the river in the afternoon but as luck would have it, the first lesson in NZ is to wait for the right conditions and of course this was learnt when the weather turned suddenly from summer to autumn and the heavens opened up. Along with the downpour came some huge gusts that even gave us some excitement at school let alone the bush. And so it was a week later than planned. The time spent collecting information and just being in amongst the tall natives of the Tawa Walk at Pelorus Bridge was just magic. We could have spent much longer there.

After a brief lunch it was time to get wet just below the bridge and tackle the set tasks Mr Throssell had lined up… negotiating rapids with the body in the right position, using a rescue rope, the use of buoyancy aids/life-jackets, how to keep warm in cold water and the if and how when entering water from an elevated position.

Having waited a week the weather was stunning and the lessons learned in the pool and subsequently the river, will be reiterated in Term 4 when the follow-up happens in salt-water.

HAPPY FACES ART CLUB!

We would like to invite children of 5+ years to join in our Happy Faces Art Club.

We will be creating a wide range of take home masterpieces including: scrap booking, sewing, paintings and picture frames. It will be held one Sunday each month from 9:30 - 11:30 am and we will provide a morning tea to keep those creative juices flowing! Our first session will be on the 22nd of March so contact us for more information and an enrolment form, bookings are essential. Don’t delay spaces are limited!

CONSERVATION ON OUR DOORSTEP Following an application process, ten seniors were given permission

by DoC for the Pelorus schools’ annual overnight adventure staying on Maud Island. Although the preparations seem a wee bit OTT at first, once you’re on the island and you know what is trying to be achieved you can understand the precautions. Like many of life’s lessons and understandings they don’t come with whistles and bells shouting out, “Over here!” What is found on Maud needs careful attention, observation, patience and thought. To this end we were lucky enough to have the services of Marine Biologist from Otago University Richard de Hamil as well as Sue and Frank who live on the island. A number of activities were used to help with the understandings of conservation and the impact of human activity and perhaps what sort of thinking needs to be applied to keep the balance fair so that future generations can enjoy the wealth and diverse nature of our local flora and fauna.

Being able to observe and/or hold, the giant weta, cave weta, bush weta, skinks, geckos, little blue penguins, Maud Island frog and feed moths to morepork/ruru made the lessons easier to understand. Just how DoC staff go about their work and the technologies used gave real insight into the practicalities, long term thinking and patience required when committing to conservation work. Of course some history in the form of the WWII gun battery and magazine was impressive but showed also how nature endures and is reclaiming what was once a huge human imprint on the eastern facing slope of Maud Island.

Students returned tired but enthusiastic.

One never knows just what seeds have been planted and whose hands will take over this important work in the years ahead. Thanks DoC for granting us the opportunity and also Richard and Sue for your efforts in engaging with our students in lessons hard to teach inside a classroom.
