60 DEGREES ~ trying the right angle This is the theme for Term II’s Parent-Teacher Forum on Thursday 2 June from 15:45 – 17:00.

Dare we mention the word ‘homework?’ There is substantive research essentially saying it is a waste of time. Some of us are not convinced. It depends to a very large degree on varied intentions versus myriad realities. This 75 min session explores how the three angles making up the triangle might best total 180o. Of course at different times and days the degrees can and should vary but, they still need to add up to 180.

Should the three partners, each trying their best angle, get the balance right, then a nicely balanced equilateral triangle is formed. At times scalene, isosceles or right-angled triangles might be the order of the day. Come and take part in the dialogue – bring your burning question.

MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS COMMUNITY VEHICLE TRUST Do you need to go to Nelson for a medical appointment? Is the driving difficult or even impossible and the family and friends reluctant to take you there? There is now a Marlborough Sounds Community Vehicle Trust.

The object of the Trust is to carry persons who cannot drive, for whatever reason, to Medical appointments in Nelson. Membership of the Trust will cost $15 per annum. There will be a small charge for the journey and any member who lives in the Picton/Waikawa area or anywhere along Queen Charlotte Drive or State Highway 6 from Havelock to Rai Valley is eligible. It would be impracticable to divert from those roads but a pick up anywhere along those roads will be done.

RECENT TECH CHALLENGES Coming to grips with software, firmware and hardware and then making them work together continues to challenge senior students at the Marlborough Technology Centre.

Having made all the parts handshake, arranging the instructions to perform

the desired pattern stretched both mind and spirit. Whilst very obedient, machines’ binary code is very dumb, it’s the programmer that is clever… well perhaps only after a few more year’s practice.

Students enjoyed the making followed by engineering the instructions. To date… mixed results. More fine-tuning next week.

“RECYCLE FOR SIGHT” MONTH May is “Recycle for Sight Month” in the Lion calendar and reminds us to ask our communities to hunt out any spectacles that are of no further use to the wearer but which could be very useful to people in developing nations.

Refractive errors can be easily corrected with eyeglasses, yet millions in developing nations lack access to basic eye care services. Please give your support to the Lions Recycle for Sight Programme. There is a box for depositing glasses in the box at the Havelock Medical Centre, Lawrence Street

Alzheimers Marlborough assists people with Alzheimers or a related Dementia and their families. Living with dementia can be very stressful but you need not struggle on alone. Alzheimers Marlborough is now available in Havelock to provide practical information, support and education to anyone in the local community whose life is being affected by dementia. Confidentiality is guaranteed. Alzheimers Marlborough will be in Havelock monthly on a Wednesday on the following dates: May 25th, June 29th, July 27th, Aug 31st, Sept 28th, Oct 26th and Nov 30th.

CANDIDATES FOR OUTWARD BOUND Every year the Havelock Lions Club arranges sponsorship for a young person aged between 18 and 25 to attend a classic Outward Bound course. Funding for this comes from the Lions Club and from First Light Trust so that any young person who lives in the Pelorus area can be selected.

The course runs for 21 days and during this time our candidate will experience all outdoor elements and activities Outward Bound has to offer including sailing, kayaking, bushcraft and navigation. However, the most important aspect of the course will be the realisation that our candidate can rise to the challenge realising his or her potential and learning that, with perseverance, dreams can be achieved.

REAP's aim is to give the Rural Community support, the opportunity to partake in activities in their area and to provide a tutor for the activities chosen by those interested. These courses are being organised by Havelock Community Education Service with REAP support.

Bonsai Workshop: Tutors: Rod Wegener & John Simpson. Date: 28th July. Time: 10am Cost: $50.

Each participant will be given a plant & pot and be shown all the processes and techniques from choosing suitable plants, soil, fertilising, repotting, styling, shaping, wiring, nursery & pruning skills and ongoing care. Participants will work on own plant. Worksheets will be handed out and books will be on display along with many bonsai plants.

POTENTIAL CHANGES TO LEARNING AREAS From the first newsletter of the year…

The memo sent home on 2 Feb to parents indicated that students have been placed in interim learning areas pending a roll review with the Ministry of Education as the numbers indicate a potential increase to staffing levels. Clearly these things take a wee while to work through but we are working to resolve the attendant issues as quickly as we can.

Enrolments have continued largely as predicted albeit in a slightly delayed timeframe. Our roll today stands at 75 students, one short of a tipping point relating to MoE entitlement staffing. A further five known enrolments are anticipated before Term 4 and so the Community Classroom will need to revert to a learning area for the largest cohort in the school, namely our Year 3 students. Already staff are referring to the former Room 1 as Kenepuru in keeping with the school’s analogous links with the water ways of Te Hoiere. A teacher new to the school is being finalised to fill the limited tenure position. The foreseeable start date for the position and learning area seems to be 20 June, assuming anticipated roll numbers eventuate.

The table gives as accurate a picture as can be predicted at this stage.

Clearly there will be a point (20 June) when the actual transition from three to four classes will take place. Given the cohort profile of the school, it is the Year 3 and 5 students who will move to different learning areas.

An extra twist to the above is the timing of our principal’s sabbatical 10 leave from July through to the 6 beginning of Term 4. This leave means 2 that Mrs Eden will be Acting Principal 30 29 16 23 16 21 18 and Mrs Wearing Acting Deputy for Total 75 78 the duration. With the exception of the Feuerstein and Reading Recovery programmes, Mrs Eden will be released from teaching duties and Wakamarina will have another teacher new to the school from 4 July to 23 Sep (end Term 3). It is more than likely that whilst two new teachers will be part of the staff shortly, they are not likely to be entirely unknown to students.

Although anticipated early in the year, the reality will remain exciting as the time draws nearer with a better balance of numbers, ages and stages across the school.

FROM GUM TREES TO CASH As with most fairy tales there is a twist. So too with this story. DoC, you may have noticed is dropping the large gum trees that have formed an increasingly impressive backdrop to the port at the bottom of Lawrence St, Havelock Quay and Outram St. It has offered the school the opportunity to convert them into funds. With no magic wand at hand the school will need to muster chainsaws, splitters, trailers and muscle, not to mention the scones, tea, coffee and other liquid replacement therapy so the wish can be turned into reality. At some stage in the not too distant future the call will go out to circle a date on the calendar so the conversion process can begin. Thanks for your help in anticipation.

Once the reading certificates were given out there were not very many students left to give the well-deserved applause. Great to see reading being done regularly beyond the classroom. As a parent, don’t forget to ask the reader a couple of questions about what they have read. After all, reading is done for the sole purpose of gaining meaning, without it there is literally no point.

Reading remains of course the fundamental skill on which almost all other learning is reliant. Daily practice is so crucial as it aids fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, imagination, thinking, empathy, writing, spelling, dialogue, research/inquiry, discernment… need more be said.
