We extend a very warm welcome to William King (Y1) who has just begun his adventure at school in Kaituna. We wish him a happy and rewarding time at Havelock School. To Ella-Kapreise Lang also we extend a very warm welcome as she joins other Y2 students in Kaituna. Lovely to have you with us and best wishes for a successful time at Havelock School. All the way from Kiribati we have visiting, for the moment at least, Berekata Obetaia who also joins Kaituna in their many learning adventures. Monday was a great day to start off in a new school as Levity Beet worked with pre-schoolers up to and including Y2 students playing home-made music in the hall. MID-YEAR TRIANGULAR LEARNING CONFERENCES It’s that time of year again when the three major players in your child’s education come together to review progress and preview where and how to, next. DID YOU KNOW? Currently ‘That Sugar Film’ is screening in our region and raising interest about processed foods which have lots of added sugars. Most muesli bars, biscuits and packet cereal-based snacks are high in sugar. Lunch box or snack ideas could instead include bread rolls, savoury muffins, plain crackers or toast, unsweetened popcorn , pita breads, cheese, pasta, raw veggies, nuts and fruit……. and be ‘tooth friendly’ too! DOUBLE DOLPHIN AWARDS The parents of Emma McCauley, Ellie Gatjens and Taylor Clark recently received a congratulatory card sharing the news that one of their children had received a Double Dolphin Award. Kiwi Can leaders Di and Sophia handed the awards out at assembly last week acknowledging that these three students are exemplary as regards showing respect for their community and in particular, their environment, often cleaning up after others. Congratulations are of course also in order for the three students themselves. Showing respect for the wider good of the community is held in high regard, perhaps because too few practise the ideal. Nice one! WHAT AND WHEN IS MATARIKI? Matariki is the Māori name for the star cluster known as the Pleiades. Traditionally for Māori when it appeared just before dawn in late May or early June, it signalled the start of the Māori New Year. For some tribes, the rising of Puanga (Rigel in Orion) signals the start of the New Year. Different tribes celebrated Matariki at different times. For some it was when Matariki rose in May/June. For others it was celebrated at the first new moon, or full moon, following the rising of Matariki. In the 21st century it is the new moon following the rising of Matariki that signals the New Year. In 2015, Matariki, the Māori New Year started on 18 June.

TOTARANUI ~ ABEL TASMAN NATIONAL PARK
The seniors from Pelorus recently returned from their ten-day camp at Totaranui where activities included canoeing, tramping, social studies (history/impact/legacy), first aid, bushcraft, art, orienteering, cook/camp outs, abseiling, science and a closer communal living situation. The overall Aim was: To provide the students with an outdoor learning environment away from their familiar home surroundings in order that the objectives listed below could be met. Objectives have fun present situations where social interaction and growth can occur develop an awareness of basic needs and how these were met by past inhabitants of the Totaranui area (past/present and future technologies and life-styles) develop self-awareness and confidence in approaching new situations and experiences studying aspects and skills of outdoor recreation understand and extend perceived personal thresholds building up awareness of dangers involved and safety measures necessary for survival extending the students' knowledge and appreciation of the outdoors generally and the importance of land/resource management/use to develop a wider appreciation of the uniqueness of New Zealand and the environment in which we live Those who have been privy to the closed Pelorus Facebook page can probably tell from the photos and comments that the objectives were well met and indeed will continue to have influence downstream. These few photos say a lot. Thanks to all who made this enterprise not only possible but such a success.
