SCHOOL SEAFOOD STALL MANAGERS Jason and Tracey Clark have done a wonderful job of co-ordinating the school’s seafood stall at the festival for the past couple of years and now feel it is time to hand over the role. They have put together a great set of notes and contacts to help this run on smoothly. We are canvassing our collective readership in the hope a couple of folk may step forward to manage this event. There are always a bevy of volunteers who roll their sleeves up closer to the time and the day itself runs very smoothly. If this sounds like something you could do then please don’t hesitate to put your hand up. Tracey and Jason are very happy to pass on their collective wisdom and experience to make this a success again in early 2016. Please contact either Jason, Tracey or Mandy in the school office. INVITATION TO SPECIAL EDUCATION UPDATE FORUM Special Education continues to be a major priority for the Ministry of Education. While much has been achieved in recent years in inclusive education, there is more to be done. We invite you to attend a Special Education Update forum to learn about our direction and discuss improvement ideas. We want to reduce fragmentation of services, simplify access to extra learning support and increase the consistency of services across the country, so children and young people who need extra support can progress and achieve. Our Special Education Update is looking at the whole education system including the Ministry’s responsibilities - from early childhood, through primary, secondary and tertiary education. We want a range of views to inform decisions about improvements. So far we’ve worked with representative groups, professionals and some individuals (including parents) in forums to discuss priority improvements. We understand more people want to contribute so we’ve decided to hold extra forums – mainly for parents but others are also welcome. These additional forums are being held from midAugust to 4 September. We are using the same format as earlier forums and will include all contributions into the analysis and decisions about priority improvements.
Blenheim School 42 Alfred St - Monday 17 August 7 - 9 pm RSVP to della.drummond@education.co.nz so we know how many people plan to attend - and let us know if you have any special requirements. Please ask for background reading when replying. We want all learners to achieve and succeed. Everyone’s contribution to this work is important, no matter where you live or work – in schools, kura, early learning centres families/whānau and communities right around New Zealand. NOW HERE’S A CHALLENGE Take in some serious altitude for a good cause – Drop Your Boss Skydive is here. Raising funds for Kiwi Can (FYD) at the top of the south! FYD Marlborough delivers proven programmes that bring positive change to the lives of young people in the area. Two of Havelock School’s teachers have been nominated to be dropped or pushed (we aren’t fussy) out of a plane - whilst it is flying at altitude. To ensure this will happen we need to raise some cash and needless to say, there is already a serious competition developing to see who can reach the target first. You can choose your favourite to be dropped/pushed by heading to the Givealittle link of choice below.

CANDIDATES FOR OUTWARD BOUND Every year the Havelock Lions Club arranges sponsorship for a young person aged between 18 and 25 to attend a classic Outward Bound course. Funding for this comes from the Lions Club and from First Light Trust so that any young person who lives in the Pelorus area can be selected. The course runs for 21 days and during this time our candidate will experience all outdoor elements and activities Outward Bound has to offer including sailing, kayaking, bushcraft and navigation. However the most important aspect of the course will be the realisation that our candidate can rise to the challenge realising his or her potential and learning that, with perseverance, dreams can be achieved. Our candidate will: 1. Challenge him/herself and push limits 2. Reflect, discover what is important to them and determine their future direction 3. Learn about themselves from both success and failure to take their confidence and motivation to the next level 4. Discover what it takes to create effective relationships and be part of a successful team 5. Develop a stronger sense of personal responsibility in responses to real and challenging situations. If you know of someone who will benefit from this course please get them to contact Debbie Healy. Her phone number is DDI 520 6262, mobile 021 284 2424 and her email address is greenprescription@marlboroughpho.org.nz Applications close on Friday 28 August 2015. Candidates will be interviewed and all candidates will be advised who the successful person is by 11 September.

EXPLORERS As some of you know there is an explorers group operating in our midst. This is a Scouts type group run by volunteers for boys (sorry girls you’ll have to start a Guides type group). Its purpose is to give the boys opportunities to explore and learn new practical skills. We are a small exclusive group as that gives us more freedom to do a wider variety of activities especially when transport is needed. For more information about this group please contact Piers Throssell at PJThrossell@gmail.com

CROSS COUNTRY ~ 31 JULY ~ HOSTS CANVASTOWN The change of term seemed to do the trick with the weather and a better day could not have eventuated. Organisation was as usual right on the mark and ran superbly to time. Students’ behaviour was collectively exemplary and a credit to the pupils, parents and teachers comprising the Pelorus schools. In case you have never seen the various courses you can goto this page online and scroll to the bottom. There was just the right amount of moisture lying in the paddocks to keep runners honest and wary. The gradients and terrain for older students was a good test for competitors and found out those who had let their training slip. Canvastown, running on their own track, proved again too difficult to beat overall and took out first place in the inter-school competition. When the total scores were added and divided by the numbers taking part the places fell as follows: Canvastown (3.25), Linkwater (2.84), Rai Valley (2.68), Havelock (2.5) and Waitaria (2).
Above Courtney, Liddy, Drew, Jack and Max receive certificates for being placed amongst the front runners almost a clean sweep. At left Tiabeina, Isla and Abbey rounding a post with only 600m to go. Mauri Ora na Akoranga ~ Learning for Life… since 1861

MAKING OUR ENVIRONMENT HAPPY
If we needed proof, then Hannah collected it in bags coming down the Mahakipawa Hill Road recently. After a pleasant walk up the new Link Pathway, Hannah and her parents came back down via the road. The perspective from the track allowed Hannah to see the copious amount of rubbish lying on the sides of the road. The messaging from Kiwi Can and loudly heard by pupils across New Zealand, includes caring for the environment as well as each other. Hannah chose to “make the environment happy" and perhaps persuade others too that all of us need to take care and that means take our rubbish with us rather than throw it out the window. Hannah kept collecting rubbish but ran out of bags after filling five of them. Thanks Hannah - a Double Dolphin Award coming your way soon. If Kiwis Can throw their rubbish out the window perhaps Kiwis Can also make an effort to clean it up. Nice effort Hannah. We need more Kiwis with the right Can Do attitude. May be the rest will disappear soon. Mauri Ora na Akoranga ~ Learning for Life… since 1861

PLAY SPACE/S
Those with keen eyesight might have already seen the A1 posters displayed in the hall giving a hint of what is planned for our re-vamped adventure playground. The concept has moved beyond the current area and has taken into account the wider play space/s within a re-landscaped environment. The concept is bold but works with existing elements and takes themes from the wider Sounds environment… a very exciting set of concepts. Comments and submissions are welcome by 31 August and may be made in any form. Submission papers are available in the hall, from the office and are also on line along with the concepts. You will find them under Admin on the web site… follow the links and see what is envisaged. Students are quite excited despite the long time in getting to this point. They are keen to see whether the elements they suggested are included. Ben Roborgh is the board’s Play Space/s Convener and comments etc may also be made directly to him. See paper for contact details.

CHESS
On Friday last week four senior students took a plunge and entered the regional Chess competitions in Blenheim… hosted at Marlborough Boys’ College. Despite the trepidations and inexperience of playing at this level, the team members did very well and put Havelock on the map coming away with second Junior School. Nice one team - Check mate! Above: Maryanne, Jacob, Ari and George having a warm-up before the serious games of war got underway.
MUSIC FESTIVAL ~ MON 21 SEPT
Over forty Year 3 - 8 pupils are working hard learning lyrics and melodies for the eighteen songs on this year’s programme. Two years ago it was a grand night and certainly a festival of choral highlights. It is hoped this high standard can again be attained with the two hundred students from other Marlborough schools on the last Monday of this term in the Civic Theatre. Over four nights, four large choirs of children from different Marlborough schools will be performing along with guest artists. Tickets went on sale at Ticket Direct on Monday 10 August. Get yours before they’re all gone - they sell out really fast… Adult $14 and Child (<17) $10.
