MUSIC FESTIVAL ~ MON 21 SEPT
Over forty Year 3 - 8 pupils are working hard learning lyrics and melodies for the eighteen songs on this year’s programme. Two years ago it was a grand night and certainly a festival of choral highlights. It is hoped this high standard can again be attained again with the two hundred students from other Marlborough schools on the last Monday of this term in the Civic Theatre. Over four nights, four large choirs of children from different Marlborough schools will be performing along with guest artists. Tickets went on sale at Ticket Direct on Monday 10 August. Get yours before they’re all gone they sell out really fast… Adult $14 and Child (<17) $10. SWIMMING LESSONS 18 JANUARY - 22 JANUARY 2016 Parents and caregivers would you be keen for your children to participate in a week of swimming lessons with a qualified instructor from Stadium 2000? The lessons take place at the solar heated Havelock School Pool during January 2016. We need a minimum of 20 children for the go-ahead. The cost per child will be determined by the numbers. For more info or to register interest, email/phone names and ages of your children to Jeanette at ajm74@hotmail.com or 574 2076. This notice will be repeated periodically and is of course on line via the school’s web site under latest newsletter or newsletter archive. Mauri Ora na Akoranga ~ Learning for Life… since 1861

NEW WORLD BLENHEIM MARLBOROUGH KIDS DUATHLON
The Marlborough Kids Duathlon is a wonderful event for kids aged 6 – 18 years. It’s noncompetitive which means everyone has a chance to win a prize. So get your kids active and involved in the Marlborough Kids Duathlon – entries are open now! There are two courses to choose from: Course 1: Run or Walk 1km – Bike 3km – Run or Walk 1km Course 2: Run or Walk 2km – Bike 5.5km – Run or Walk 1km It’s just $16 to enter and this event is held on Sunday 18th October at Brancott Vineyard so the scenery is pretty superb! There’s heaps of grass for parents and grandparents to hang out on – and a fundraising BBQ will be run so you won’t go hungry. For more information and to register your kids, visit the Marlborough Kids Duathlon website www.kidsdu.co.nz Entries close 25 September. Late fee of $4 for entries received after this date. Once again the New World Blenheim Marlborough Kids Duathlon has a prize for the school that has the most entries. The winner is calculated on the percentage of children that enter, so even the smallest school can win. Contact Rachel 027 608 3103 if you would like some prep.
NOW HERE’S A CHALLENGE Take in some serious altitude for a good cause – Drop Your Boss Skydive is here. Raising funds for Kiwi Can (FYD) at the top of the south! FYD Marlborough delivers proven programmes that bring positive change to the lives of young people in the area. Two of Havelock School’s teachers have been nominated to be dropped or pushed (we aren’t fussy) out of a plane - whilst it is flying at altitude. To ensure this will happen we need to raise some cash and needless to say, there is already a serious competition developing to see who can reach the target first. You can choose your favourite to be dropped/pushed by heading to the Givealittle link of choice below. You can also make your donation at school if you would rather.

DOUBLE DOLPHIN AWARDS Last week four of these were awarded. The parents of Abbey Lawrence, Hannah Roborgh, Ari Tremain and Tane Ward recently received a congratulatory card sharing the news that one of their children had received a Double Dolphin Award. Kiwi Can leaders Di and Sophia handed the awards out at assembly a fortnight ago acknowledging these four students as exemplary role models. STALL MANAGERS Jason and Tracey Clark have done a wonderful job of co-ordinating the school’s seafood stall at the festival for the past couple of years and now feel it is time to hand over the role. They have put together a great set of notes and contacts to help this run on smoothly. We are canvassing our collective readership in the hope a couple of folk may step forward to manage this event. There are always a bevy of volunteers who roll their sleeves up closer to the time and the day itself runs very smoothly. If this sounds like something you could do then please don’t hesitate to put your hand up. Tracey and Jason are very happy to pass on their collective wisdom and experience to make this a success again in early 2016. Please contact either Jason, Tracey or Mandy in the school office.
PET DAY ~ SPRING FESTIVAL BBQ LUNCH MANAGER This event is on the not too distant horizon and the school is looking for a volunteer or two to help make this part of the day a success. Pre-ordering and an uncomplicated menu makes this a largely predictable exercise. If you can help out in this way on Friday 16 October please contact the school office. OUTWARD BOUND Havelock Lions have extended the invitation to youths aged between 16 and 18 to apply for sponsorship on a 21 day Outward Bound course. The course they will be applying to join is called “Mind Body and Soul” and, like all Outward Bound courses, is designed to mentally, emotionally and physically challenge participants. It is designed for students in their last years at school or for those getting ready to take the next step after leaving school by helping them discover what is important to them. They will have the chance to gain their independence, challenge their limits and work as a team. The course includes off-track tramping, camping outside, white-water and surf kayaking, running, sailing, swimming and rock-climbing. Applications close on 25th September. Please contact Debbie Healy, her phone number is DDI 520 6262, mobile 021 284 2424 and her email address is greenprescription@marlboroughpho.org.nz. Candidates will be interviewed and all candidates will be advised who the successful person is by 18th October. Book Fair There will be books galore at our book sale which will take place at the Town Hall on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th October. The doors will open at 9:00 am on Friday and there will be books in all categories (including local history, cooking, gardening, fishing, craft, autobiography, children’s books), on sale over the two days. In addition you will be able to buy jig saw puzzles, DVDs and CDs cheaply. In addition we will have our regular stall holders exhibiting their wares. If you have any books or magazines you can contribute to the sale, please contact Lion Anne Boddy 574 2394 to have them collected. Proceeds from the book sale will be used to meet the costs of constructing the Petanque facility at the Memorial Park (Domain). The balance will be used to top up the Lions’ fund established to meet disasters which may occur in the Pelorus area. KC LEADERS RUN PMP FOR PCP Don’t you just love acronyms - not. The translation reads Kiwi Can Leaders run Perceptual Motor Programme for Pelorus Preschool. Albeit briefly, the hall was a mini gymnasium last Wednesday as Pelorus leaders worked with our youngest and those spending the morning next door. From the KC point of view this was about doing something for others and how through good role-modelling others learn the right way of doing things. Some of our older students had forgotten how small the learning steps are for little folk and had to quickly re-think their approach. The challenge was accepted and all enjoyed some special moments and the buzz of helping others who were encountering new challenges themselves. Children worked their way round a number of stations, each with differing large motor skills movements. Of course being a role-model doesn’t stop with children and one of our trustees and PCP teachers showed how it was done. Nice one kids. Mauri Ora na Akoranga ~ Learning for Life… since 1861

MOBILE COMMUNITY ORAL HEALTH CLINIC IS VISITING
The Mobile Community Oral Health Clinic will soon be in our area once again. As in the past it will be sited at Havelock Primary School from Monday 7-25th Friday September 2015. The brightly decorated Mobile COHC houses two fully equipped clinics each staffed by a dental therapist and a dental assistant who are supported by modern x-ray, computer and sterilsation facilities on board. The Community Oral Health Service operates from 8 am to 5 pm five days per week, fifty weeks per year giving parents more choice as to when they can accompany their children. Nelson Marlborough District Health Board Oral Health Educator Esmé Palliser said “Parents have also enjoyed the ability to group book all their children to be seen at the same visit and talking directly to the dental therapist about good oral health care for their family.” The Mobile clinic makes two visits a year to our area and parents will be contacted by telephone to arrange appointments for their children. If families need to change these appointments or they have recently shifted or changed their phone number they should phone 0800 833 849.
Did you know? Tooth Decay is a preventable disease. Decay or ‘holes in our teeth’ are caused by acid attacking our teeth after we eat or drink sugar. Plaque is the furry film that builds up on our teeth everyday and the bacteria in plaque reacts with the sugar in our drinks and food and turns it into acid. Encouraging your children to drink milk and water is a great start to reducing those ‘acid attacks.’ NELSON MARLBOROUGH COMMUNITY ORAL HEALTH SERVICE BLENHEIM & MARLBOROUGH MOBILE CLINIC 520 9922
