Spring Fest Spring is in the air and it’s time to start thinking about your entries for Spring Fest or Pet’s Day on Friday 14 October. As this is the FIRST Friday of Term 4, most of the organising and preparation needs to be completed before the end of this term – 23 September. Selena is our Event manager and is looking to recruit willing (and not-so-will volunteers if necessary!) to help with the preparation and organisation of the day. Preparation includes setting up of indoor entries, organising booklets, recording entries, lunch orders, etc Helpers for the day include stewards for indoor and outdoor rings, gathering and collating results, gopher for judges, etc If you would like more information and/or are willing to help, please phone Selena 574 1360 or 027 630 7002. Pelorus Writing First, Kathy spent fifteen minutes practicing her aerials on the trampolines but then she mysteriously started to struggle. So she took a break, she went home to her house on Budge street to find the freshest blackberries in the fridge. Once she had gobbled the whole punnet of blackberries up, she strolled back to the gym to work on her aerials on the floor. Ten minutes later... Crash! "Oww!" yelped Kathy, everyone in the gym came rushing over to see what had happened. Luckily one of the adults that were exercising was also a paramedic, so she knew straight away that Kathy had broken her leg. The manager of the gym rang the ambulance and the other two members of Kathy's family, her Mum and Dad. By Tayla I hear a faint hum in the distance. I grab my gear and wait at the helicopter pad. About two minutes later the trees are getting thrashed around violently as Mark's Hughes 500 lowers skilfully onto the big red H. Once the rotors finally settle into resting position and Mark flicks all his switches and checks his gauges, he greets me with a warm smile. "How ya goin Jake?" he bellows as he bobs out of the cock-pit. "Good thanks mate" I reply. "The fly in was beautiful Jake. I've checked the weather for the week and it's absolutely primo for hunting". I stow my gear in the cavity of the Hughes, grab my dogs, and jump in. My friend Mark is roughly six feet tall and is by far the best helicopter pilot I know. That if you are new to the region and wish to access dental care for your children you can now complete the Community Oral Health Service Pre-enrolment form online via the NMDHB website? Just go to Public Health section and you will find it via the ‘A-Z ‘by clicking on either dental or oral health. The pre-enrolment form will go to the clinic you identify – and they will contact you to make an appointment that suits. Also a reminder of the free 0800 TALK TEETH number [see below] which will also take you directly to your closest clinic when you follow the prompts. Mobile Community Oral Health Clinic is visiting again! The Mobile Community Oral Health Clinic will soon be in our area once again. As in the past it will be sited at Havelock Primary School from Monday 5th – Friday 23rd Sept 2016. The brightly decorated Mobile COHC houses two fully equipped clinics each staffed by a dental therapist and a dental assistant who are supported by modern x-ray, computer and sterilsation facilities on board. The Community Oral Health Service operates from 8 am to 5 pm five days per week, and fifty weeks per year giving parents more choice as to when they can accompany their children. Nelson Marlborough District Health Board Oral Health Educator Esme Palliser said “Parents have also enjoyed the ability to group book all their children to be seen at the same visit, and talking directly to the dental therapist about good oral health care for their family”. The Mobile clinic makes two visits a year to our area and parents will be contacted by telephone to arrange appointments for their children. If families need to change these appointments or they have recently shifted or changed their phone number they should phone 0800 833 849.

Alzheimers Marlborough assists people with Alzheimers or a related Dementia and their families. Living with dementia can be very stressful but you need not struggle on alone. Alzheimers Marlborough is now available in Havelock to provide practical information, support and education to anyone in the local community whose life is being affected by dementia. Confidentiality is guaranteed. Alzheimers Marlborough will be in Havelock monthly on a Wednesday on the following dates: Aug 31st, Sept 28th, Oct 26th and Nov 30th. COURSES REAP's aim is to give the Rural Community support, the opportunity to partake in activities in their area and to provide a tutor for the activities chosen by those interested. These courses are being organised by Havelock Community Education Service with Reap support. Bonsai workshop: Tutors: Rod Wegener & John Simpson. Date: 1st October. Time: 10am Cost: $50 Each participant will be given a plant & pot and be shown all the processes and techniques from choosing suitable plants, soil, fertilising, repotting, styling, shaping, wiring, nursery & pruning skills and ongoing care. Participants will work on own plant. Worksheets will be handed out and books will be on display along with many bonsai plants. Limited to 10 people. A few positions still available. Havelock Mosaic Project This project will be contributing to the implementation of the Havelock Community Plan which has identified beautification as a priority initiative for the town’s future development. Creating a mosaic work of art on the kerbing surrounding the park where the Rutherford Pickering and Anzac Memorials are situated at 65 Main Road Havelock. The mosaic work will feature these tiles of the birds we see and hear in the township. A free form style will be the major part of the mosaic linking the ‘bird tiles’.
