KIA ORA TATOU, NGA MIHI NUI This last week has seen the season moving appreciably from winter into spring. The equinox is now only about three weeks away. Daylight lasts longer and the angle of the sun sits higher in the sky. This was clearly obvious last Friday when the Pelorus Cluster schools assembled in Canvastown to contest the Cross Country. No fog, no rain, just sunshine and a gentle north westerly wafting the occasional yellow cloud of pine pollen over the Wakamarina. Further event results etc included elsewhere in this newsletter.

Although well signalled already, this is a reminder of the hui in Wakamarina this Thursday 31 August at 7:00pm. Principally this is about the schoolwide safety programme Keepiong Ourselves Safe starting in all classes from 4 September. Josh Reidie the School Community Police Officer will be working with teachers and pupils across the school. This is an opportunity to find out first-hand what is covered and how, during this work. Abuse occurs in all communities, regardless of ethnic, socio-economic, geographic and religious make-up. A child who has been abused is less likely to reach their full potential as an individual, may struggle to focus on learning, and may fail to thrive.

Keeping Ourselves Safe [KoS] comprises a comprehensive range of child protection resources to help students learn and apply a range of safety skills that they can use when interacting with others.

Google Keeping Ourselves Safe and various links will guide you further. An RSVP on the letter sent home 16 August sought to indicate numbers attending. Even at this late stage a phone call to the office would be appreciated.

This hui also seeks to discuss aspects of sexuality education which is covered in the Life Education work involving Years 6 – 8. All parents are very welcome to attend as sooner or later all children of course (and their parents) discover this exciting period in life’s journey.

During informal discussions with parents over the past few weeks there seems general support for the wearing of bike helmets when children are scootering or skateboarding. From Term 4, when students are on wheels going to or from school and while at school, they will be encouraged to wear a helmet and in time, this will become the new norm, similar to the introduction during Term 1 this year with Mauri Ora nā Akoranga ~ Learning for Life… since 1861

the wearing of hi-vis vets. Following this transitional pilot, from Term 1 2018 this will be the new “normal.” [Perhaps an idea for Christmas.] Term 4 also sees sunsmart hats back in fashion.

Congratulations to the four boys whose integrity was recognised recently with a Dolphin Award.

As always, the challenge is there for all, doing the right thing even when nobody is watching.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, tickets for the Marlborough Primary Schools’ Music Festival will only become available from Tuesday 29 August. Please book online at http://www.asbtheatre.com or to call 0800 TICKETEK. Thirty of our students practised together with 260 other Marlborough in the Renwick Community Hall last Wednesday. There are still many lyrics to be learned and melodies finely tuned. Practices are being ramped up and each day for 30 min the group meet to make this another great show.

CROSS COUNTRY 25 Aug CANVASTOWN The weather was about as good as it can get and the conditions underfoot were perfect – just the right amount of mud and organic material to pay attention. Courses were as before with distances ranging from 600m through to 3000m for the oldest groups of Yr 7/8. Organisation was as usual right on the mark and ran superbly to time. Students’ behaviour was collectively exemplary and a credit to the pupils, parents and teachers comprising the Pelorus schools.

In case you have never seen the various courses you can goto this page online and scroll to the bottom. The gradients and terrain are a good test for competitors and found out those who had let their training slip.

Canvastown, running on their own track, proved again very strong but were pipped by Rai Valley with Waitaria Bay coming third. Havelock and Linkwater completing the rankings. The photos and table show how things unfolded for Havelock pupils.

André finishing strongly for a third place in the 11-year-old section.

Juniors started the day with tabloid events.

Ball skills being show-cased by Cushla.

Our newest runner Levi being helped by a group of Wakamarina pupils as he comes into the chute after the 600m 5-year-old section.

The long grass made the courses just that much more taxing but for juniors particularly, it made the running just that more of a contest.

Levi also stopped to help another who had fallen along the way and still managed second place. Ka pai!

Thanks to Canvastown School for a terrific event and to all those locals who helped with transport, logistical and moral support – a great day out as a community.

It’s cannabis growing season again. If you see or hear anything, we would like to know about it.

Growers will not hesitate to use your property for their own means. Any suspicious behaviour that you suspect would relate to unlawful cannabis cultivation like: • Suspicious vehicles parked in rural areas.

• Boats behaving suspiciously around the Marlborough Sounds.

• People in the bush who do not look like they are hunting or tramping.

• Any cannabis cultivating equipment you see.

PELORUS ESTUARY COMMUNITY NURSERY A range of plants (mostly natives) is available for $2 a plant from the nursery which is situated at Kaituna Ridges, Readers Road Havelock. All the plants have been grown from seed sourced and collected in the local area. If you would like to purchase plants please phone Muff on 574 2127 (evenings).

If you would like to help out on community potting and weeding days at the nursery, please phone the same number as above and we will let you know when a working bee is planned.

REAP COURSES REAP's aim is to give the Rural Community support, the opportunity to partake in activities in their area and to provide a tutor for the activities chosen by those interested. These courses are being organised by Havelock Community Education Service with REAP support.

Festive Bread Making Course ~ 7 Sep 11:00 – 3:00pm ~ Tutor Annette Michna-Konigstorfer $45 The Tutor will make a Christmas bread with cherries and chocolate and bring it pre-prepared and also have a masterclass to show you what to do. At this course you will make an easy version of Croissant dough ready to take home and finish in your own ovens. We can also make tortillas, crumpets, steamed, filled buns called "bao", bagels or English muffins. And perhaps, if time allows, (depending on the number attending) another masterclass in making yummy one hour buns starting with a cold oven.

All things that are easy and can be shared with family and friends for Christmas lunch or any day, frozen for school lunches and we can make it all on one household stove.

“Get To Know The Police” Community Meeting Waitaria Hall 2:00 pm Tuesday 19 September 2017

With the objective being to establish a good police / community working relationship the newly appointed Havelock Police team will be here to meet with us. Beginning at 2pm the meeting will cover such subjects as: • Structure, who’s who, where and when • Communication options best for the situation • Situations: Hunting, accident, emergency, safety of property and person, ‘crops’, overstaying vehicles, fire, the what to do’s and more.

Formal meeting will be followed by afternoon tea and opportunity to meet up and exchange ideas one to one.

Previous police based at Havelock developed excellent relationships and understanding / knowledge of the people and life in this remote community. The Barsanti, Horne and Wilson eras ran well for all parties. We now have a new police team at Havelock and they are very keen to re-establish that relationship with us for the benefit of us all. So let’s make the effort and come along To Waitaria, Tuesday, 19 September. See you there’ Pat Williams.

Queen Charlotte Yacht Club Learn to Sail Course 2017/18 Shelly Beach, Picton This course is aimed at children 8-15 years old to teach them confidence on the water sailing an Optimist dinghy. The Course is run over 3 days with approx. 12 hours of tuition both on and off the water. Coaching is given by our qualified Yachting instructor with help of other sailors Water confidence and the ability to swim at least 50 meters is required.

The course fee of $175 per person covers • 12 hour’s tuition over 3 days • Yachting NZ Learn to Sail Logbook and Level 1 certificate • Use of a Club Optimist and facilities for the duration of the course • Expert coaching by our Qualified yachting instructor.
