CURRICULUM REVIEW As part of the school’s three-year cycle of review, the policy relating to Food & Nutrition (5.42) has been updated in line with the 2015 Food and Beverage Classification System (fuelled4life) for ECE and schools and therefore will defer to the 2015 Buyers’ Guide when making decisions relating to food and nutrition. One change is that the classifications have moved from three to only two dropping OCCASIONAL and leaving only EVERYDAY and SOMETIMES. The board would be most happy to receive feedback relating to this draft before 17 Oct. The statement may be found under Documents on the school’s website. Other links are of course available by accessing the digital version of this newsletter via the top menu on the website. This guide may be useful in terms of background information relating to school lunches as the booklet has been arranged into sections for easy reference. Given the now well-known information about sugar etc this guide is quite clear, particularly around drinks. Remember too that the school is part of the Fonterra Free Milk to Schools programme so students are able to access this once a day direct from the fridge.

BUILDING PROJECT At its recent meeting the Board of Trustees was happy to hear the news that the Ministry of Education is to top-up the Five Year Property Grant to enable the modest but very necessary upgrade of the toilet block and adjacent areas of the main block. Plans and tenders have already progressed and final consent shortly should see work begin before Christmas with demolition mainly, and to have the extension shell and added classroom space ready for 2016, but not the toilet block although this should be completed by end Feb. While a little inconvenient (excuse the pun) the school has sufficient conveniences in the hall, Community Classroom and pool area.

PET DAY ~ SPRING FESTIVAL BBQ LUNCH MANAGER This event is on the not too distant horizon and the school is looking for a volunteer or two to help make this part of the day a success. Pre-ordering and an uncomplicated menu makes this a largely predictable exercise. If you can help out in this way on Friday 16 October please contact the school office. TERM FOUR MEANS BEING SUNSMART In four words this is spelt SLIP, SLOP, SLAP & WRAP From Day 1 (12 October) pupils will be expected to have and wear a SunSmart hat ie one with a brim - no caps. SunSmart clothing and shades should also be the norm. A pair of smart shades were given to Wakamarina and Kaituna pupils last week thanks to Marlborough Cricket. LIONS BOOK FAIR There will be books galore at our book sale which will take place at the Town Hall on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th October. The doors will open at 9:00 am on Friday and there will be books in all categories (including local history, cooking, gardening, fishing, craft, autobiography, children’s books), on sale over the two days. In addition you will be able to buy jig saw puzzles, DVDs and CDs cheaply. In addition we will have our regular stall holders exhibiting their wares. If you have any books or magazines you can contribute to the sale, please contact Lion Anne Boddy 574 2394 to have them collected. Proceeds from the book sale will be used to meet the costs of constructing the Petanque facility at the Memorial Park (Domain). The balance will be used to top up the Lions’ fund established to meet disasters which may occur in the Pelorus area. This event takes place Sunday 18 October at Motueka Aerodrome 60 College St. STALL MANAGERS Jason and Tracey Clark have done a wonderful job of co-ordinating the school’s seafood stall at the festival for the past couple of years and now feel it is time to hand over the role. They have put together a great set of notes and contacts to help this run on smoothly. We are canvassing our collective readership in the hope a couple of folk may step forward to manage this event. There are always a bevy of volunteers who roll their sleeves up closer to the time and the day itself runs very smoothly. NEW WORLD BLENHEIM MARLBOROUGH KIDS DUATHLON
The Marlborough Kids Duathlon is a wonderful event for kids aged 6 – 18 years. It’s noncompetitive which means everyone has a chance to win a prize. Entries are open now! There are two courses to choose from: Course 1: Run or Walk 1km – Bike 3km – Run or Walk 1km Course 2: Run or Walk 2km – Bike 5.5km – Run or Walk 1km It’s just $16 to enter and this event is held on Sunday 18th October at Brancott Vineyard so the scenery is pretty superb! There’s heaps of grass for parents and grandparents to hang out on – and a fundraising BBQ will be run so you won’t go hungry. FABULOUS QUIZ NIGHT Our quiz night on Friday 11 Sep went very well with positive feedback from many of those who took up the challenge. We had a total of 10 teams with 4 - 6 members each. The favourite subjects were children’s drawings, technological construction, kahoots, lateral thinking… all the subject sections in fact! All this was in aid of Tracey and Piers being thrown out of a plane for KiwiCan on October 18 in Motueka. All in all we raised $1100. Congratulations to Piers and Tracey for their initiative, hard work and of course for ultimately putting their bodies on the line - or rather out the door. All this effort was made all the more enjoyable by the generous sponsors. Our collective thanks for putting their hands in their pockets.

What is Southern Katipo? EXERCISE SOUTHERN KATIPO IS NEW ZEALAND’S LARGEST MILITARY EXERCISE, HELD EVERY TWO YEARS IN VARYING PARTS OF NEW ZEALAND. In the scenario, a fictitious South West Pacific island is separated into two nations called Becara and Alpira. Becara is suffering from political instability and unrest. New Zealand has been requested to assemble and lead an Intervention Force comprising a coalition of Pacific Island Forum Member States. Westport, Nelson Lakes and the Marlborough Sounds will become the troubled Becara region. Twelve countries have been invited to participate in, or observe the exercise. 1.
What are the benefits of this training for the New Zealand Defence Force? The exercise will test the ability of the NZDF to plan and conduct joint operations involving sea, land and air assets. Exercises such as this are crucial for the NZDF to ensure that its personnel are well trained and ready to respond to a crisis at home or overseas at any given moment. It will also give the NZDF further real time experience working with personnel from other nations. 2.
Where and when will this year’s exercise be held? More than 2000 military personnel will be in the Buller, Tasman and Marlborough regions over the month of November 2015. The first military exercise participants you will see arriving in Havelock, which should occur in the second week of November 2015, are the Exercise Controllers and some Role Players. They will be setting up in various locations throughout the town and surrounding area. The military Role Players will likely be wearing civilian clothing and will be blending in with the community. They will make themselves known and should be easily identifiable as they will be displaying Becaran paraphernalia, such as: the Becaran Flag, small embroidered patches or pins and perhaps a combination of sky blue and yellow items which represent the colours of the Nation of Becara. 3.
Shortly after the Exercise Controllers and Role Players have established themselves you will see the main military contingent, of about 150 personnel, build up its forces in the Havelock township. vehicles, such as the NZ Army’s Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV), the new Medium Heavy Operational Vehicle (MHOV) and Light Operational Vehicle (LOV). Once the contingent has established itself in key locations, such as the Sports Domain, you will see regular day and night patrols of the township’s streets and centre conducted by soldiers either on foot or in vehicles. Soldiers from Australia and the French Army based in New Caledonia will also be taking an active part in the exercise. Royal New Zealand Air Force helicopters may be conducting flights overhead and occasionally landing at suitable locations in and around the town area while the contingent is based in Havelock. There will also be naval activity occurring throughout the Marlborough Sounds. Military ships from New Zealand, Australia and the French Navy, Tahiti will be conducting amphibious operations in locations such as Okiwi Bay, Titirangi Bay and Port Gore, which will involve amphibious landing craft delivering vehicles, personnel and equipment over the shore. They will also visit the port of Marlborough in Picton on a number of occasions. The Royal New Zealand Navy’s participation is significant, with HMNZ ships CANTERBURY, TE KAHA, WELLINGTON, MANAWANUI and HAWEA all taking part. When will the exercise finish? The end of the exercise is planned to be around 22 November 2015. Shortly after this you will see the military contingent, including the vehicles and equipment, withdrawing back to their home Units throughout New Zealand.

Will the public be able to see some of the activities? Members of the public will have the opportunity to get up close and personal to some of the activities, and information about that will be made available later this year.

RAI VALLEY A & P SHOW GIANT PUMPKIN COMPETITION 2016 Just a reminder that we will be holding the Giant Pumpkin Competition again at the March 5 2016 Rai Valley A&P Show. Kelly has potted up sixty seeds that should be ready for Labour Weekend planting, so pumpkin patches need to be readied for the planting! She will also be sowing more of the Atlantic Giant Pumpkin seeds from the King’s Seed Catalogue over the next few weeks and hopes to have around 150 seedlings available for sale. Of course you are very welcome to grow your own seedlings from your secret source! In case you didn’t make it to last year’s show, we had a great turnout of twenty-two giant pumpkins. The winner was grown in Linkwater by Mr Robin Templeman to a massive 114kgs! He won a beautiful tri coloured satin sash and $200 prize money! We are hoping for even more competition this next show! So, start getting your patch ready with lots of manure, seaweed and your secret ingredients to grow an even bigger one. There are some great web sites with lots of useful information. FROM ACORNS DO BIG TREES GROW An activity started at the Pelorus Community Preschool about three years ago had its logical sequel last Friday when Tane Ward finally got to plant his tree (nee acorn) for the second time. After looking at the rimu Dr Sir William Pickering planted* on 15 March 2003 which has grown into a fine specimen in the twelve years, pupils planted eight young natives donated as reward for re-cycling the school’s paper under the Paper4trees scheme. A small but significant “forest” of big trees is becoming established beyond the pool and to this the eight were added. Tane’s tree meanwhile, now in bud burst for the fourth time, needed a bigger hole and so after removing the inevitable rocks the deed was finally done. At the time of planting, the oak stands at the same height as Tane. We have of course great hopes for both. Perhaps like other giants who studied the universes within and beyond, great things may grow. Planting seeds, nurturing life and growth indeed has its rewards. With the support of a number charities this new 12-seater minibus has recently become a reality and has already been well christened on its maiden journey to the Pelorus camp at Totaranui last term. It is operated under the authority of the Havelock School Board of Trustees and whilst is clearly to support school programmes, it is generally available to non-profit groups and organisations in the Havelock area that obtain user membership by application. Information, forms and conditions etc are available on the school’s web site under Admin. The school welcomes enquiries. The Carrot and Pickle show is back by popular demand! This high energy, fun-tastic family Circus show with crazy clowning, amazing acrobatics, stupendous slapstick, tricky juggling, goofy songs, clown magic and a whole bunch of hilarious audience participation will delight your children and keep them entertained the entire time. SEPT/OCT HOLIDAY PROGRAMME Enrolments are now being taken at reception for our popular Holiday Programme for 5-11 year olds. The two-week programme commences on Monday 28 Sep through to Friday 9 Oct. Operating every weekday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm the programme offers a diversity of activities including Sports, Arts and Crafts, Team Building/Fun Games, Aquatics and a whole lot more… The programme is O.S.C.A.R accredited and qualifies for childcare assistance. Charges are $30 per day or $120 per week Morning and afternoon tea are supplied. Participants are required to bring their own packed lunch. PLAYSPACE/S At its meeting last week the Board of Trustees moved to progress the initial playscape/s concept to its second stage. Some more planning work is being done and from there a timeline will be devised including, tasks, further funding and of course de/construction. Watch this space for further updates. FAREWELL Although already heralded in a previous newsletter, we farewell this week Mrs Lynda Dunlop who has been keeping our school clean for the last three years. Lynda’s work is not often public but of course the results are. Working early or late Lynda has worked also during holidays to do those extra tasks so necessary when you get so many working close together. A special vote of thanks to Lynda for her endeavours on our behalf and best wishes. CLUSTER SPEECH COMPETETION The following stepped up to the podium last Friday and took a big risk in fronting these competitions representing their peers and school: Anika McPhee (Bees), George Robbins (Possums), Jack Mulholland (Smoke Alarms) and Kea Bradley (Bullying). The winning trophy was awarded to Rai Valley Area School. A very rich and vibrant range of speakers and topics made for an entertaining and interesting day hosted by Canvastown School at the hall.
