LOCAL LEADERS PLUMMET FOR KIWI CAN Eighteen business and community leaders from across Marlborough took the ultimate leap of faith recently jumping out a plane and hurtling thousands of feet back towards terra firma. Fortunately, it was all for a good cause – as part of the Drop Your Boss Skydive fundraiser – and perhaps more so because they were all securely strapped to one of the professionals from Abel Tasman Skydive. Raising money for the Kiwi Can values programme in local schools, this was the first Drop Your Boss event involving such significant height. “It’s amazing to see what good people will do for a good cause, especially when it involves helping local kids,” says Kelvin Watt, Coordinator of Kiwi Can in the region. “These folks have helped raise over $47 000 which is an incredible effort and a significant contribution to what we do. I know many were quite nervous beforehand, but it’s fantastic to see their smiles as they land.”

There were some obvious butterflies mixed with a sense of anticipation as participants were lead into their pre-flight briefing. “I’m a pilot and I’ve never understood the need to jump out of a perfectly good plane,” quipped TvA accountant Geoff van Asch, “I’m about to find out.” Wineworks supervisor, DJ Daniels had just 24 hours to mentally prepare for the jump when his colleagues voted that he would take his boss’ place, who was taken overseas on business.

Also lining up to make the jump were all three teachers from Havelock School, one of the first schools in the region to introduce Kiwi Can. Principal, Ernie Buutveld, says “It’s a great way we can show support for the Kiwi Can programme and it also role models to our students that we’re open to giving things a go. I’ve got some serious staffing issues if things go wrong today though,” he jokes. The youngest participant of the day was 12 yearold Kea Bradley, also from Havelock School. Kea didn’t hesitate to put her hand up for the opportunity when it arose. This came about when Sanford General Manager, Ted Culley, (as part of his $19 000 fundraising effort), convinced one of his supporters to sponsor a Kiwi Can student, and Kea was the lucky recipient. “I’ve never been in a plane before, but I’m looking forward to this,” Kea causally mentions as she is guided away to get into her flight suit. Nothing but broad beaming smiles greeted onlookers, as one by one they all returned to earth buzzing with excitement (and perhaps a dash of adrenaline). A video clip of the event can be viewed at www.givealittle.co.nz/event/dropyourboss-skydive/updates Kiwi Can teaches important concepts such as respect, resilience and integrity to primary-aged students. In 2016 it will be delivered in 7 schools throughout the region, positively impacting over 630 local kids every week. Research shows that Kiwi Can builds self-confidence, reduces bullying and reinforces positive behaviour. Drop Your Boss fundraising pages will remain open until the end of November. POOL OPEN Out of school hour access to the pool for keyholders is now operating. The Board of Trustees adopted the 2015/16 Keyholder/Casual User Agreement at its 27 Oct meeting. The revised agreement and application form are available from reception and online. Please check over the agreement carefully. The pool has been made available to the community but only if keyholders honour the agreement. Check carefully. NEWS FROM THE HAVELOCK MUSSEL & SEAFOOD FESTIVAL The iconic Havelock Mussel & Seafood Festival now in its twelfth year, has been revamped for 2016 and promises to offer more seafood, more stalls and more entertainment than ever before. The first clue is in the festival’s new name. Whilst the familiar Marlborough GreenshellTM Mussel remains the hero of this event, it has been joined by a full line-up of local seafood ready to be showcased by celebrity chefs and paired with simply stunning local wines and beers. To that end the event’s name has been changed to reflect the wider culinary focus. Profits from this successful event have, since it began, been donated to numerous local community groups and associations on an annual basis. Members of the Havelock Mussel Festival Committee are confident that this year’s overhauled event has the potential to draw larger crowds, resulting in greater funds for distribution. Local event organisers, Marlborough 4 Fun, work in conjunction with the festival’s committee to deliver the Havelock Mussel & Seafood Festival. Marlborough 4 Fun CEO Katrina Lange says, “There’s no doubt that the dial has been turned up a notch for this year’s event,” and continues, “Our headline musician is Kiwi icon, Anika Moa who needs no introduction and we’re currently in talks with some big name celebrity chefs. So whomever we secure, we will definitely be able to serve up a spectacular culinary event. ” Mauri Ora na Akoranga ~ Learning for Life… since 1861

Anika will be joined by an impressive line-up up of bands and other entertainers – all designed to ensure the festival is alive and kicking from the get go to the end of the day. 2016 will see greater levels of sponsorship for the event with Pilsner Urquell coming on board to join other major sponsors that include New Zealand King Salmon, Sanford Limited, the Marine Farming Association, MoreFM, the Marlborough Express and many other long term, industryled supporting sponsors. The day itself will include more music and more wine, beer, food and craft stalls than previous years, with competitions and kids’ entertainment on tap. Yet despite this exciting new blueprint the event’s tickets have been reduced in price to reflect the organising committee’s commitment to provide a high quality yet great value event that attracts visitors to the region and entertains the locals. To reflect the Havelock Mussel & Seafood Festival’s status as a fun filled family day, kids under twelve with an accompanying adult will be admitted free. The Havelock Mussel & Seafood Festival takes place on Saturday 19th March at the Havelock Domain. Early bird tickets are now on sale from www.iticket.co.nz. For further information visit www.havelockmusselfestival.co.nz.

Book Fair Our Club is delighted with the success of our Book Fair held over Labour Weekend. We were able to raise sufficient funds to be able to pay for materials for the construction of a Petanque Court down at the domain and also to top up the account we maintain for local victims of disasters. We plan on running another Book Fair in two years’ time.
BONFIRE NIGHT HV2020 trustees would like to thank Muff and Paul Newton for welcoming us to their property, the sponsors Smiths Farm Holiday Park, Lions Club, Pelorus Mail Boat and Eyes On Nature and all those who volunteered their time to help make the community bonfire night such a great success. The winner of ‘Guess the Sheep Weight’ was Jimmy Keenan. Jimmy’s guess was 176 kg and the correct weight was 175 kg. Well done Jimmy. Also, thank you to the community for joining in the fun.
With the Pelorus Cluster Athletics meeting held only last Friday, there has been insufficient time to process all the individual scores to determine champions and the winning school. Our next newsletter will have all the action including the feature event involving the NZDFs. Soldiers also met the school informally last Thursday for a collective meet and greet. JOHN PARSONS Last Tuesday John spent the whole day working across a number of groups from within and beyond the school. Students throughout the day had age appropriate sessions with John all based around how values should permeate the way people interact with all aspects of IT – phones, email, the internet, being empathetic, knowing how to get help, who to trust and how to protect identity etc. After school twenty-five or so teachers from local schools and early childhood centres heard John talk about how teachers in their professional and private lives need to protect themselves across all aspects of modern communications and how the employer also has responsibilities. A really good session in the evening was not well attended unfortunately, but for those who did, they enjoyed a realistic, informing and entertaining ninety minutes. Some resources will become available and cover online grooming, damaged reputations, cyber bullying, reputation management, learning to repel and report, future proofing for employment etc. Local schools are likely to work further with John in 2016. OPERATION SOUTHERN KATIPO At the close of the Athletics last Friday a variety of “foreign nationals” assembled at Woodbourne and following a briefing went to Bacara to be processed as tourists who needed repatriation to a safer haven (Picton). Titirangi was reinforced with troops and deemed safe. After a night under canvas and due processing, the evacuation was carried out via landing craft from the HMNZS Canterbury. Some one hundred and twenty-five were thus evacuated and spent a night on board. Disembarkation at Shakespeare Bay occurred 24 hours later. The tourists were well looked after and took the opportunity to mix and mingle with NZDF personnel from both the army and navy. Numerous tours around the ship were enjoyed and living on board was quite an eyeopener. HMNZS Canterbury is a multi-role vessel (MRV) of the Royal New Zealand She was Navy. commissioned in June 2007, and is the second ship of the Royal New Zealand Navy to carry the name, the first ship having Leander-class been a frigate. She is also New Zealand's first purposebuilt strategic sealift ship. Mauri Ora na Akoranga ~ Learning for Life… since 1861
