Literacy Pro is a reading programme designed to match children with books that interest them and provide just the right amount of challenge to help them develop their comprehension with growing independence. After reading the selected book, students take a quiz that reveals their level of understanding for that book. Each quiz they pass generates points and these points accumulate until the student reaches the required number of points to be awarded a certificate.

NATURELAND with KENEPURU

We had to put our hand in the bucket without looking. We were to guess what we thought was in the bucket. Some people got a fright because it was sharp. In the deep dark bucket there was a …… Crocodile head!

Christine told us that kea are the smartest birds on earth. She said that one day a man was setting traps he went to have lunch and he came back and the traps had all been set off. He started to reset the traps and turned around and a cheeky kea with a stick was setting them off. The kea had been watching the man.

Mrs Allan got to hold a lizard. When it poked its tongue out it was blue. We were told not to touch its tongue… would you like 18 children to touch your tongue?

This is Mrs T. She has a box shell turtle and when she is scared she hides inside her shell.

WAKAMARINA KIDS are CLUED-UP KIDS On the 11th of November all of the Year 5 and 6 students went to Brayshaw Park for Clued Up Kids. We learned about being safe around trains, vehicles, fires, earthquakes, boats, water, pets, push bikes, motorbikes and also about medical safety.

We had a ride in the train, learned about biking safely on the road and learned how to call the correct emergency crew when needed.

We went into the “shake house” and practiced what to do in an earthquake which came in handy with the recent earthquakes.

We learned how to pack our emergency kits for when or if we have a natural disaster.

We all enjoyed going to Clued up Kids and learning about being safe in our environments.

EARTHQUAKE!

When the earthquake came, my mum and dad came into my bedroom and then Dad ran down the stairs to see if the TV was on, while Mum was holding me.

The earthquake stopped and I asked if I could go in my dad’s bed and he said yes.

The next day everywhere outside was flooded so I couldn’t go outside and play. Some people came and helped us to get the flood away. Mum went out the gate with her horsey boots on and I put my horsey boots on too and snuck out the gate and I saw my friend Raymond.

The next day when there was another earthquake I didn’t want to go in my own bed because I was too scared of the big earthquakes.

I was at Mitre 10 and then there was an earthquake and so I went to Mum and I felt it shaking and then I got a toy.

I felt frustrated because there was an earthquake.

In the weekend I went to cross the road and we saw water and it came through the fence. Down the road there was a river that went brown and it went on the road by the pub.

We saw Isaac and he came in our car to get fish and chips and we also got juice.

When we went back home Mum said we weren’t allowed to check the horses because of the flooded paddocks. By the river by the road it was flooded. A little bit was in the paddock, but luckily the horses weren’t in there, they were up on the hill.

I felt happy because the horses were safe.

Georgia

In the weekend I had a flood at my house. It was at my door and we couldn’t get out.

The water kept getting higher and higher until it got to our doorstep and went inside our house. We got wet feet.

My nana and I went outside and a landslide came down and got to our gate. We went down the cow race and when we came back we couldn’t get to our house because there was a digger and a truck in our gateway to clear the landslide.

When I went to the end of the cow race, Robbie Wratt was there and there was a log stopping his cows from getting to the cow shed to be milked.

I felt quite sad for the cows being all huddled together in the rain.

Jayden

When the earthquake happened I was sleeping down the bottom bunk and my brother Phynix slept on the top bunk and then he came down to me and put my teddy on my face and I woke up.

We both went to and slept with Mum. We all went to sleep.

I felt happy.

A MESSAGE FROM MARLBOROUGH PRINCIPALS’ ASSOCIATION Firstly, on behalf of those currently facing the challenges created by the recent quake I would like to thank everyone for the care and support sent to Kaikoura, Ward and Seddon. It has been and continues to be rather surreal. For many, the journey hasn't even really begun.

We know many of you have wondered what help and support you can offer to those in need. It is automatic to think in the immediate - food for now, things for Christmas etc but the emergency services and other support groups have this covered.

From experience we know that the real challenges haven't even begun and the support needed is a little more long-term. Families in Kaikoura, Ward and Seddon have lost homes, belongings and businesses, essentially their livelihoods. Financially they are going to be struggling for a long time. Basics such as buying school books and uniforms for next year and paying for extras is going to be difficult. Schools are also going to need to provide respite for their staff who are also going through all of this but are 'sucking it up' for the benefit of the kids. The list of 'new challenges' schools are going to have to deal with are endless and somewhat unknown.

Because of this, the Marlborough Principals’ Association have started a support fund that will be distributed amongst the schools in the Marlborough/Kaikoura area in need. This fund is to allow schools to do the extras for their staff and students that would not normally be covered by their operational grant. It might be things such as organising a fun day for their students or paying for school books for those in need.

If your school, staff, students and communities would like to help out those in need, we ask they contribute to this support fund. Every school's needs will be different and this fund will help meet them. We know from experience that this sort of support is the most beneficial and very much appreciated.

PELORUS GETTING THEIR GROOVE ON!

Pelorus demonstrate they still have the skills to rock the house with their ukuleles and are busy searching for a song to play at the end of year assembly (WEDNESDAY 14 DEC) so they can astound and amaze you with their many talents.

… has made a very generous donation of $1000 to our seniors in Pelorus which is enabling them to visit Weta Workshop and do other Arts activities while they visit Wellington this week. Thank you sincerely!

EMAIL COMMUNICATIONS The school is checking through its records for email addresses of the primary carers of its students in order to facilitate the broadcasting of information etc to particular groups or all families as a whole. If you suspect the school does not have such an email address, the correct one or even the latest one, please send an email to admin@havelock.school.nz with SURNAME EMAIL ADDRESS in the subject line.

Currently it appears that about ten may be missing, obsolete or non-existent. It is not intended that the school adds to your spam but rather on occasion, keep you abreast of information that be more timely, appropriate and expedient via email. The Boomerang Book remains the default method for daily communications in both directions. Please be reminded that the “red flag” alerts teachers to important items on any given day.

2017 IN PROSPECT With just under three weeks to run of the school year people are understandably interested in how 2017 might shape up. Although there are still some items yet to be sorted, the larger picture of how the school will be organised in the New Year are laid out below. Entitlement staffing means that the four classes of 2016 will continue into 2017 however, their location, composition and homeroom teacher may be different. Given the current profile of numbers across the years, ie large number of Year 4 students next year, students in this year group could find themselves in either Kenepuru or Wakamarina. Discussions have started with students’ parents and caregivers as to specific needs etc. Over the next couple of weeks it is the intention that all parents of these students will have some dialogue with their child’s current teacher about this.

Tracey is undertaking Reading Recovery Training and as you can see above, will share the seniors with Ernie and an as yet unknown teacher. Feuerstein will continue in Kenepuru, Wakamarina and Pelorus.

You will note the absence of Mr Piers Throssell’s name in the organisation for 2017. Piers has resigned his position from the end of the year and is heading to Nelson to continue teaching and pursue other interests. We take this opportunity to express the school’s thanks and best wishes to Piers for the three years working with our senior students. Piers has contributed much to the school over the last 36 months particularly his enthusiasm for the outdoors and promoting independence in his students. More words will be said at our final assembly of the year on Wednesday 14 December which starts at 18:30.

FINAL ASSEMBLY WEDNESDAY 14 DEC STARTING 18:30 Please be reminded that although there will be one more newsletter this year, it will only be published on the day the school’s final assembly is being held. The school and also individual classes will be presenting items and of course seniors will be fare-welled. It is envisaged that this will happen within a two-hour timeframe.

STATIONERY LISTS 2017 These are being reviewed and will become available via the school website and in hardcopy from the office before the school year draws to a close.

There is only one list with differing columns for different year groups. Supplies are sourced similarly to the specials which become available in January but some items are specifically supplied to the school as they are not available elsewhere. Be assured the prices are sharp and it must be a given that there is less stress in sorting this from the ease of your home as opposed to a busy stationery supplier in January or February.

2016-17 SWIMMING SEASON POOL KEYS The 2016-17 Season Pool Key-holder’s Application/Agreement is available from the school office or may be downloaded from the Documents section on the school website in pdf format.

The completed application form should be lodged with the school along with $70.

At the close of season $20 will be refunded if the key is returned on or before the date stated in the agreement.
