TRIEENIAL TRUSTEE ELECTIONS ~ MAY/JUNE 2016 These come around faster than you think and the Havelock School Board of Trustees has three of its five parent representative positions involved. The common date of 3 June is likely to be the actual election date across schools and so by 27 April the current board will have appointed a Returning Officer. The Main Roll will close 4 May and nominations will be called/open from 6 May. Nominations will close 20 May with papers sent by 25 May - votes counted 9 June and Board takes office 10 June. Please take some time over the summer break to contemplate whether this might be a way for you to contribute to Havelock’s school. CHILD PROTECTION POLICY (5.50) With the passing of the Vulnerable Children’s Act 2014 schools and other institutions have taken the opportunity to review and refresh their paperwork and procedures. Havelock School has upgraded its policy also and the board is likely to adopt the revised policy at its first meeting of 2016 in February. Unfortunately its length is somewhat longer than its predecessor and is very comprehensive containing definitions, expectations and procedures should any situation arise. OUTSTANDING TEAM AWARD Children across Marlborough know them collectively as ‘Di and Soph’, or sometimes simply as ‘Kiwi Can’. They are the people and passion behind the programme that has been reinforcing key values in local kids over the past 2 years. Their contributions were recognised at the Foundation for Youth Development Excellence Awards hosted by the Governor General at Government House in Auckland recently. “There are over 40 Kiwi Can teams throughout New Zealand, and to be one of three to receive an award was a real honour” says Di. The award recognises the positive contribution the leaders have made to local kids, schools and communities. “We often get parents telling us how much their children enjoy the lessons and talk about what we’re doing in class. ‘Keep trying mum, try try again, that’s resilience just like in Kiwi Can’ – it makes me smile when I hear stories like that from parents.” Di and Sophia travel to Havelock, Linkwater, Picton, Whitney Street and Kaikoura schools every week, delivering a lesson with each class in the school. “A big part of the programme is getting to know the kids. As well as the lessons, we spend time with them at play times, finding out what they’re into. Learning all the names was intimidating in the beginning, we see over 500 kids each week” comments Sophia. The growth of the programme into Mayfield and Blenheim schools in 2016 is a further endorsement of the outstanding efforts of this duo, and the importance placed on the concepts they are teaching. HAVELOCK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION HUB MANAGER Applications for the position of Hub Manager for the Havelock Community Association (HCA) are sought. This is a sole-charge position with responsibilities to manage the HCA hub office and to carry out book-keeping and administration roles to support the work of the HCA committee and to provide accurate information to HCA members and to members of the public. Hours of work: The successful applicant will be expected to work 13 hours a week during the months of October to April and eighteen hours a week during the months of May to September (inclusive). The successful applicant will be employed by HCA and will be expected to work out of the HCA offices. The hours of work are to be spread over a minimum of two days a week and the same days and hours are to be worked each week. HAVELOCK MUSSEL & SEAFOOD FESTIVAL NEWS The iconic Havelock Mussel & Seafood Festival’s edible feast has just become even more tempting. The line-up of all day entertainment now includes a celebrity chef who needs little introduction. Michael Van de Elzen, is well known to television viewers for his popular and successful TVNZ shows, Kiwi Living and in previous years The Food Truck and Family Recipes. Mike promises to bring with him a distinctly Kiwi-flavour with a dash of international seasoning. He spent several years overseas heading up acclaimed and award-winning restaurants and hotels, such as Terence Conran’s Bluebird, and the highly thought of Bank restaurant in London; together with the Conde Nast “World Small Hotel of the Year”, Dunbrody Country House in Ireland. Having owned successful restaurants in New Zealand and in recognition to his contribution to the culinary scene in New Zealand, Mike was inducted into the Hospitality Hall of Fame in 2012.

PROJECTS RECENTLY COMPLETED Christmas Trees:- Pallets converted to Xmas tree shapes took over as the main task during October/November. Much measurement/cutting/nailing and noise occupied the workshop. The final products wonderfully decorated by the Havelock Enhancement Group can be seen around the Havelock area. Plywood Xmas Decorations:- Lindsay Jefferis, with his amazing artistic skills, sketched some patterns on plywood and the gang took over with the jig saw. Raised Garden at Pre-school:- Some rearrangement of the ground matting saw the formation of a soundly finished product, children were very helpful, adding comments and advice. Marvellous afternoon tea! Petanque:- Work is now finished. Framing of signs:- Interesting woodworking skills involved here: some really amazing mitre skills have developed. Steps:- Have been involved with “Age Concern” in helping with stair construction for an elderly client. Shed Improvement:- Much has been done inside the Menz Shed to improve the environment since the extensions. Kitchen area has been rearranged, tools sorted and a board for name tags erected. What next:We are looking forward for more projects. Anyone with ideas to help the community, the aged, the disabled, let us know so we can look at it. CHARTING THE FUTURE Annually schools review their agreement with the government as regards their vision, goals and plans in response the needs of students and the broad wishes of their community. Havelock’s Board of Trustees too has spent some time looking carefully at its charter and goals. In mid-November it invited the school and wider community to a hui for a 90 minute session to enjoin in conversation about the school’s longer-term goals, especially in relation to employment predictions for the workplace. This event was not well attended however, because these goals form a significant part of the charter, the board has published hereunder a draft set following on from their workshop at Te Mahia. Should you have any comment please communicate as desired with a trustee. It is likely these, or slightly modified versions will be include in the 2016 charter. General Goals (revised Sep/Oct 2015) The school will, in consultation with the community, continue to promote the following outcomes for its youngsters. 1 Students will succeed within an environment where trustees, parents and staff form a positive learning triangle/team achieving a sense of well-being/hauora. Hi Everyone. Classes will take a break over Christmas/New Year. The last class of the year will be Friday 18th December 9:30am. Then starting the week 11th January, one day class (Wednesday) and one night class (Thursday) will continue until February. It’s a really hot time to be doing hard classes so the pace will change slightly. Next year I will no longer be doing Monday morning classes but the other classes will remain the same. We will start with some cruisy classes in February, so if you are keen, those will be great classes to start coming to and build up your fitness from there. Apart from joining other items on the fridge, the following was generally agreed as being worthy of them and the time professional staff put in preparing them. Did you know? That the Community Oral Health Service is open 8am-5pm Mon-Fri for 50 weeks a year, so all the clinics will be operating over the summer school holidays. Clinics will only be closed from Tues 22nd Dec 2015 until they reopen on Mon 6th Jan 2016. For any urgent dental care during that time, parents should contact a contracting dentist in their community. It is also a time to remind each other about ‘keeping our teeth safe’ over summer by limiting our sugary food, drinking water and brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
