PLAYGROUND
As you may have seen, work on the playground has started again with the generous support of Gary Lawrence and his team doing the drainage and general layout of the playground. In the coming months, we will see tunnels, edging, tiger turf, stepping poles etc being installed as well as the planting of the mounds. A slide has been purchased and will be installed as the layout is completed. Fundraising is ongoing for completing the three large items of equipment in the middle with firewood being sold and the upcoming stall at the Mussel Fest also raising funds for the playground.

MUSSEL FESTIVAL STALL
The school's Mussel Festival Stall needs help. We are looking for people to help set up on the Friday (17th), then on the Saturday... people to open mussels, work the BBQs, plating up, serving and final clean up. This is our big fundraising event for the year and we really appreciate all the parent help and support. Please contact Sarah, 021 441 679. Many hands...
KENEPURU
Kenepuru learners have been pairing up with senior role models from Pelorus every Friday for 1 hour for literacy. Peer mentoring works in a positive way to motivate both classes. During our first session, the learners focused on reading to their mentors and having their mentors read to them. This gave learners the opportunity to develop fluency as well as developing a sense of pride in their accomplishments. Our next session focused on writing and developing postcards which will be sent to another school in New Zealand as part of the ‘Get New Zealand Writing’ campaign.

MID-WAY
This week sees the mid-point of the term come and go. It has been busy for all the right reasons and more of the same is on the cards. Assessments have followed through with learning conferences for almost everyone to date – a few being caught up with this week and even next week. If parents have not already met or made an appointment, please do as soon as possible. Goals have been set and pathways discussed. This Friday thirteen more senior students head in to the Marlborough Primary Swimming Champs at Stadium 2000. Best of luck team… it’s a long pool. Thanks for those who have helped with their prep. Sunday sees a team of seventeen participate in the Sanitarium Weet-bix Tryathlon at Tahuna. Again our best wishes for a trouble free event and some good weather. The Christchurch event continued even in the rain. The gear should be with you by now. Janet Kelly has put out a survey which is likely to have arrived in your mail this week. Please complete as soon as possible and pop it back in the post to reach Motueka by the 17th of March. It is great to see all our students being Sun Smart. Reminders are only required rarely. Ka pai. This week we welcomed back Amy Goldthorpe as a student teacher rather than a pupil as she was in former times. Welcome back Amy. It is hoped the pool will be functioning again by the time you read this. It always takes about three days to condition the water when it has been replaced… calcium, pH, chlorine, isocynuric acid and sodium bi-carb, all have to be at the right levels to make it safe of course. The temp was already 26o again earlier in the week. Teacher-Only-Day this Friday sees teachers working on curriculum review and also some of the unseen work that goes on. Hopefully there is time for some appointments in town or even going pool-side in the Stadium as our swimmers compete… Year 5/6 comp starts at 10:00 – warm-ups at 09:30. Years 7/8 start at 12:30 with warming up at 12:00. There are heats and finals. Good luck.
JUNIOR SWIMMING AT LINKWATER
Thanks to all who made this event possible, Linkwater School, Mrs Kenny and all those parents who supported the event with vehicles and oversight during the day. The weather was great second time round and the kids had a pretty successful day all round extending their skills in a new environment and against a wider body of competitors. A quiet moment below as starfish hold their breath for as long as… and really concentration!

SENIOR SWIMMING
This event took place in the Aquatic Centre Stadium 2000 and was hosted by Linkwater School. Despite our best efforts Canvastown pulled it off coming home champions with Linkwater runners up and Havelock coming in third. There is never much in the points tally and the day is packed with fast-paced events for both Dolphins and Fish. The sound system is always a challenge but the event ran very smoothly given the planning and experience of teaching staff. Thanks Linkwater. The photos give a good idea of both the tension and enjoyment of the swim meet. Thanks to all those parents who were able to join the students at the pool on the day. Helping with transport was certainly appreciated not to mention the support from the side of the pool. Behaviour poolside was exemplary and reflected very well the values and spirit amongst the students… a credit to their families, school and community. Now we have our fingers crossed for some individual success at the Marl Champs. Best of luck!

HEARTLAND TOUR
NZEI Te Riu Roa has launched our Heartland Tour in Wellington, taking the Better Funding, Better Learning message to every corner of New Zealand. Our eye-catching campervan will be in the Marlborough area from Wednesday 15th (Havelock 3pm opposite the school) to Friday 17th of March. We’re working together as educators to speak up for quality public education and share the message that our schools and early childhood services need better funding. We would love it if you could come along and show your support by signing our petition for better funding for schools, which is also available online: http://betterfunding.org.nz/supportstaff/ This election year, our goal is for every political party to make increased funding of public education their top priority. The Havelock Mussel and Seafood Festival Mussel Outfit Competition • Create a mussel-related costume, item of clothing, outfit, mask or anything you can wear and your imagination allows! • Bring it along to The Havelock Mussel and Seafood Festival and be in to win a prize (you will have a free pass for your entry). • Two categories with prizes for each category kindly donated. REAP's aim is to give the Rural Community support, the opportunity to partake in activities in their area and to provide a tutor for the activities chosen by those interested. These courses are being organised by Havelock Community Education Service with Reap support. First Aid Workplace Certificate: Tutor: Triple One Care. Date: 29th April, 2017. Time: 9am – 4pm. Full course workplace certificate as well as revalidation. Both are on one day. Course Cost: $105 for full course $65 for revalidation. SCHOOL & COMMUNITY MINIBUS The school’s 12-seater minibus is operated under the authority of the Havelock School Board of Trustees and whilst is clearly to support school programmes, it is generally available to non-profit groups and organisations in the wider Havelock area that obtain user membership by application. Information, forms and conditions etc are available for perusal and use via the website. The school welcomes enquiries.
