MARLBOROUGH SWIMMING CHAMPS Whilst teachers were immersed in their Teacher-Only Day and most students enjoyed an early weekend, the school swim team of fourteen comprising Anika McPhee, Eva Probert, Grace Probert, Ashelyn Horton-Smith, Tyla-Rose Illsley-Slape, Kimberley Pulham, Jessie Gatjens, Aroha Ward, Taylor Clark, Tane Ward, Roborgh, Kaytie Hannah Mulholland, Skye Gatjens and Olivia Johnson, made their way to Stadium 2000 to contest the Marlborough Primary School Swimming Champs. With the final result sheet from the organiser came the comment, “There are some very good swimmers in our community. It would be great to The Year 7/8 Swim Team 2017 see some of those swimmers take their sport further. If any swimmers are keen to do so they should visit the Blenheim Swimming Club website.” The meeting was run by the club and as such had each lane timed so those who made the finals were the top 10 swimmers in Marlborough. SANITARIUM WEETBIX TRY Last Sunday, although the weather did put the event in doubt, the Weet-bix Try went ahead at Tahunanui in Nelson. The slight delay proved a wise move and as the event moved through the morning, the weather improved and positively sparkled towards the end. The bike course was shortened a little also for the older participants. This year sixteen students took part in the varying age groups. The photos say it all really. This was the 25th year this popular event has run. Some 1800 youngsters took part at this venue.

KAITUNA Kaituna wrote about a fun letter game we played at Kiwi Can. Everyone has written their letters beautifully. Look at the great shape and size. Amazing work Kaituna!
WAKAMARINA We have been looking at the different groups to which we belong. One of those groups we belong to is Wakamarina. We discussed what our roles are within our class. (Learner, listener, monitor, friend etc). We then came up with three things we are good at within the class and three things we can improve on. We then put them on our own individual flower and combined them all on this poster to make a big flower… meaning all members of the class are individual and we come together to make up Wakamarina.

KENEPURU
Congratulations Kenepuru! Your window display was awesome!
PELORUS We've been learning about understanding emotions so today in Feuerstein we played Bean Boozled, the challenge with the bad and good flavoured jelly beans. When Eva ate a booger flavoured jelly bean we could tell by the expression on her face which looked like she was disgusted by the flavour. But when Kimberley got tuitti fruitti she tricked us by acting like it tasted horrible but then she started laughing and we soon worked out that she got tuitti fruiti and not stinky socks. The cognitive functions we used were; stop and think, because we had to smell the bean and think about if it would have a horrible taste or a delicious taste. See the funny side, because we had to treat it like a game or a joke not a test. Try new ideas, because most of us had never played this game, but in the end all of us gave it a go. WHAT A WICKED WETA! Bailey brought a weta to school to show Mrs Wearing. Their conversation went something like this… Mrs Wearing asked me if the weta did bite and I said, “I don't know if the weta bites.” So I picked it up to test it and it bit me and gave me a hell of a fright!
KIWI CAN ACTIVITIES These weekly activities with Jordan and Di remain popular and focussed on the core values of Relationships, Respect, Integrity and Resilience. The energisers and activities give ample opportunity to put the words into actions. Supporting a team-member was the challenge in this activity. The weekend included a challenge at the Mussel & Seafood Festival to participate in the biggest ever Kiwi Can session. Quite a number took the opportunity to see for themselves what goes on. Kandoo Kiwi visited the school earlier in the week to give tips to the local mussels in preparation for the event. More about the Mussel & Seafood Festival in the next newsletter. LINK PATHWAY WALK As part of the Term 1 and 2 theme Te Hoiere and Me, weather permitting, the school is walking to Cullen Point this coming Friday 24 March. Parents and grandparents etc are very welcome to join us. We are leaving just after 10:00. Taking a snack and drink, we are following the footpath to the Link Pathway and up to just above Cullen Point. The minibus will act as a safety vehicle should that prove necessary or perhaps just for those with small tired legs. The intention is to return to school for lunch. HI-VIS VESTS The orders have arrived and thanks to some sponsorship from the Fonterra Grass Roots Fund and DoC Living Water, we are going to refund those who paid the $3 included on the stationery form earlier in the term. We will be recalling all those we have distributed previously and will reallocate and resize so that all students can use before and after school as well as excursions off-site. This will occur on Thursday 23 March.
FIN’S FABULOUS FORAYS CONTINUE… After travelling around Europe with Matua B last year, Fin has caught the travel bug and has ventured south to explore the Ō Tū Wharekai Wetlands. Fin has been sharing his travel log with Kenepuru and has learned a lot of interesting things about wetlands (did you know that they are not always wet!), how water quality and pollution affects the fish and plants, as well as having the opportunity to get up close to eel and tuna. Fin has discovered ways we can help to look after our environment and protect the plant and wildlife.
KIDS’ PUPPET SHOW Sunday March 26 - 9:30 – 10:30 am St Peter's Hall 30 Lawrence Street Havelock A fun filled event for children of all ages. No charge and refreshments afterwards.

REAP's aim is to give the Rural Community support, the opportunity to partake in activities in their area and to provide a tutor for the activities chosen by those interested. These courses are being organised by Havelock Community Education Service with Reap support. First Aid Workplace Certificate: Tutor: Triple One Care. Date: 29th April, 2017. Time: 9am – 4pm. Full course workplace certificate as well as revalidation. Both are on one day. Course Cost: $105 for full course $65 for revalidation. HAVELOCK LIONS – FINAL SUMMER MARKET Our last outdoor market until October will be held on Saturday 25th March between 9:00am and 1pm outside the Town Hall and it promises to be a busy one. Melvyn from Nuggety Creek Farm has a fresh supply of pork so that will be on sale, together with his sausages, brawn, bacon and salami, He has also donated a Pork shoulder worth over $30 to be raffled- great value for a $2 ticket. Chris Thoms of “Memory makers” has booked a site. She makes Barrel Art (wind chimes, garden hangings, platters, Christmas trees etc.) from wine barrels. Also windmills, (paper) and sun catchers made with beads and she also make clocks. Chrissy from Planet Jewellery will also be there as will Kelly Ryan with his collection of printed tee shirts, polo shirts and caps. He will take orders if he hasn’t got what you want on display. We are even hoping to have a singer at this market and, of course, we will have plants, baking, a fresh selection of books, furniture and bric a brac on sale as well. Kay Reeks will be there with her handcrafts and, of course, we will have the sausage sizzle. There are still some sites available. The price is still $5 a site and we will continue with our customary “end of summer season” draw of a $50 voucher from “Mussel Pot” for a lucky stall holder. SCHOOL & COMMUNITY MINIBUS The school’s 12-seater minibus is operated under the authority of the Havelock School Board of Trustees and whilst is clearly to support school programmes, it is generally available to non-profit groups and organisations in the wider Havelock area that obtain user membership by application. Information, forms and conditions etc are available for perusal and use via the website. The school welcomes enquiries.
