TIME FLIES This is often stated which bears testimony to the fact that for many people, if not most, life is busy, full and is quite fastpaced. Even some of our students have been heard to make
this observation. Perhaps when coupled with the changing seasons, the end of daylight saving or even just the end of the term as it draws near, makes one reflect how quickly 2017 is moving along. Term 1 has 11 weeks and the remaining three terms all have 10 albeit some of course are not the full five days. Term 2 opens on Tuesday 2 May as the Pelorus Cluster teachers spend May 1 at Havelock looking primarily at writing moderation and learner agency. Trips beyond the school in Term 2 include the Maud Island overnighter, National Youth Leaders Day (Chch) and the Math/Tech Challenge at Waitaria Bay. A marae visit is also being finalised. The Life Education mobile classroom will be visiting mid-term and towards the end of the term, mid-year reports and conferencing will take place. No doubt individual classes will also be adding in other activities. Years 5 – 8 will be learning 18 songs for the combined schools’ Music Festival for Term 3. Should you add in winter sports code practices, games and travel, then the reality probably is that TIME FLIES. With the fortnight term break coming up, it is timely to wish all a safe and recreational couple of weeks. HAERE RA Monday 10 April sees the Munro girls Tayla and Molly have their last day before heading south to new adventures in Ranfurly. Our collective best wishes to Shelley, Regan and the girls. Thank you for all the support given over the last seven or so years. No doubt some strong ties will remain intact despite the distance. Happy travels. THANK YOU FOR VOLUNTEERING!! To the many parents and members of our community for their help in the planning, preparation, set up, delivery, and clean-up of the Havelock School food stall at the Mussel and Seafood Festival, Saturday 18 March. You guys and gals’ rock! Or should I say mussel? Thank you for giving up your precious time to help support the school and help raise funds for the school playground. Leigh and James Higgins, they had the idea of the mussel chowder and saw it through - start to finish, and it was a big hit! My very sincere thanks to you both. CONGRATULATIONS FIN You might recall Fin travelled with Matua B to Europe, the Middle East and Australia last year and recently just returned from down south to some special wetlands. Hmm… wonder where you will go exploring next! If you’re going places and would like to take Fin with you so he can report back from time to time, please contact the school so pupils can take a peek over the horizon. Speaking of being out and about… check out some of the other adventures the students have been up to on site and beyond. Mauri Ora nā Akoranga ~ Learning for Life… since 1861

BEING PRECISE AND ACCURATE Wakamarina have been out and about learning about the importance of accuracy when measuring, folding and recording the results of the flight path of their paper planes. Looks like far too much fun! Amy Goldthorpe has been working alongside the Wakamarina pupils but sadly has to head north again next week as her practicum comes to a finish. It has been rather neat having a former pupil at the beginning of their career join the professional staff albeit only for a short while. Best wishes for the remainder of your training Amy and thanks for joining in so easily. PELORUS CLUSTER TOP TEAM EVENT Despite a cool start everyone had a fabulous time at the Top Team event held at Rai Valley Area School. Indeed the day warmed considerably and togs, water and soap made it so much fun. Water, detergent, nets, gumboots, buckets with holes, balancing ramps, mussel floats were just some of the equipment that when combined with children, resulted in a day packed full of fun activities designed to develop team building and plenty of opportunities for developing leadership and sportsmanship skills. Conrad shows excellent balance and concentration as he makes his way across the seesaw ramp. LINK PATHWAY WALK
Wakamarina and Pelorus were able to take advantage of the break in the weather and get a bird’s eye view of some of the local landmarks to further develop their understanding of ‘Our Place’ Te Hoiere, that are an integral part of our community and heritage. It was great to be able to use the walkway – thankyou to everyone who has made this accessible to all. Hopefully the weather will cooperate so Kaituna and Kenepuru will be able to complete the walk before the end of term.

HI-VIS VESTS Thanks to Fonterra Grass Roots Fund and DoC Living Water, we’re all a bunch of fluro oranges and lemons! All students (including bus students) have a Hi-Vis vest to wear to and from school so they can definitely be seen and not hurt! It does take a bit of getting used to but the message about the vest being either “on” or in the front of the school bag is becoming the new norm. Please encourage this to become the default behaviour as well. POOL CLOSING THURSDAY 13 APRIL As you would expect, the swim season is drawing to a close and so with Thursday 13 April being the last day of the term, it also heralds the close of the pool for this season. Keys should be returned asap in Term 2 – indeed some have already returned home and triggered the $20 refund. Thanks again to Mr Barsanti who has been ever watchful and patient in doing the maintenance every day. It will be winterised in due course and hopefully a start will be made on rebuilding the frame for the shade sail. Last week the seniors had a math test of sorts, but not as we might know them. This was set up by Matua B and done in a very competitive but fun way all online. Everyone had a device and worked hard to recall the best answer based on the work completed around number systems. The lead changed a few times and being fast with your finger helped but only if you picked the right answer. This was the second time the class had run through this Kahoot so no real surprises but it helped if close attention had been paid during class math lessons. After 20 questions Sakura came through but only after being pushed hard by Alex and Taylor, 2nd and 3rd respectively. Alex proving that age is no barrier to skill and understanding. Competition was hot for 4th but Tayla pipped Olivia 5th and Jessie 6th. Eva, George and Ashelyn rounded out the top nine places. Overall the results were very good and of course now the class can move on to fractions and measurement. Mauri Ora nā Akoranga ~ Learning for Life… since 1861

HAVELOCK LIONS – LAST OF THE SUMMER MARKETS Our last outdoor market before October was held outside the Town Hall on Saturday 25th March. Although a number of the Blenheim stallholders cancelled their bookings (it was obviously wetter in Blenheim than it was here!) there was still a good number of people who stopped to browse and buy a good bargain, and eat a hot sausage. The Lions raised $320 towards funding youth projects in the community and it is pleasing that the Club have again raised sufficient funds to sponsor six children in the Pelorus cluster to attend Kiwi Ranch camps again this year. In addition, the sponsored candidate who will be benefitting from his Outward Bound course will be starting there on 3rd July. The Lions enjoyed sharing their space with the Sounds SeniorNet photographic group. It was good to hear the enthusiastic comments from people who had viewed the various categories of the completion, including the restoration of old photographs. The winner of the stallholder’s draw for a $50 Mussel Pot voucher was Yvonne Blakey. Home wanted The following three children’s books were bought at the Market but left behind. Unfortunately, we don’t know the identity of the purchaser but they can be collected from Ian Cameron (phone 574 2558). Notes from the Havelock Museum
We have talked before in these notes about turning the building adjacent to the Museum into a second Museum which can specialise in acknowledging the history of Maori who settled in this region prior to the arrival of Europeans, exhibiting stories of local identities and businesses in the Havelock area, and providing a more extensive display of our photographic collection. Although this vision is a long way off from becoming a reality (we are only in year two of a five- year plan!) the end of this stage became closer this week when we received a generous donation of $15,000 from Rata Foundation towards the provision of a toilet which will be situated at the rear of the building which we know as the Jack Shand building, as it was donated by Mr Shand. The year has been a good one for the Museum with more than 4,500 visitors through our doors since January 1st . The survey forms, which visitors have the opportunity of filling out, are very complimentary about our displays, although a frequent comment is that there needs to be more for the children to do. This will be addressed in the new part of the Museum, where there will be more space. Another “high” for us was the success of Historic Cruise of the Pelorus. The success was due both to the generosity of Bruce and Susanne Chamberlain in giving the full complement of passengers on board the “Foxy Lady “a very enjoyable day and making sure that we were able to see as much of the Sounds as was possible; as well as to the informal and informed commentary that Robin Cox provided. At Robin’s request, the Museum made a donation to the Link Pathway from the proceeds of the day. The remainder of money made went to the Jack Shand building project. We are also very grateful to Janet Brownson of “Eyes on Nature” who volunteered her time as our ticketing agent. It was very gratifying to be stopped on a street in Blenheim by a stranger. Turned out that he and his wife were visiting from the United States, heard about the cruise and enjoyed it so much that they said it remained as one of the highlights of their trip to New Zealand.
