The Badger Book Awards are here! We are excited and proud to announce the launch of the Badger Book Awards 2023, recognising the importance of finding books students will love to read, whilst also celebrating amazing authors and compelling stories. We’ve shortlisted 10 of the very best new books for Years 7 to 11 and now it’s up to you to vote for the winners! Voting is open to students and staff, and every entry gives your school a chance of winning £500 worth of books. The winning author of each category will also receive £500 worth of books to donate to a school of their choice. Why not use our shortlist packs in book clubs? The quickest way to inject new life into libraries is by choosing from our popular library collections, many of which have been updated to include the very best recently published books. Feed young minds with a diet of irresistibly enjoyable, new, representative and inclusive reads that students will devour. Look out for the NEW sticker on collections throughout the catalogue.

Unfortunately, not all children find reading for pleasure accessible, with around a quarter of all Year 7 students reading below the level expected for their age. Reading is an essential part of almost every subject and children who struggle to read will find it difficult to keep up throughout secondary school. The Read Write Inc Fresh Start programme (page 18) gives students who have not yet cracked the 'code of reading' the chance to catch up and become confident, fluent readers. This phonics-based reading scheme, with proven results, will enable all students to access the secondary curriculum and reach their full potential.

CELEBRATING ETHNIC DIVERSITY

Finally, LGBTQ+ characters are becoming more commonplace, more diverse, and more accessible to readers regardless of their own sexual orientation or gender identity. These books for teens feature gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters, and contain storylines that discuss everything from coming out to how hetero, cis-gendered people can support their LGBTQ+ peers.

Studies have shown that the after-effects of lockdown have had a hugely negative impact on young people’s mental health, and we need to do all we can to ensure that they have help and advice available. The story or text (especially at the lower levels) contains clear and attractive illustrations. At Starter level and Level 1, many stories are in the form of graphic novels so that the text is well supported.

RESCUE STRUGGLING

READERS AGED 9–13

Read Write Inc. Fresh Start is a catch-up and intervention programme, with proven results, for 9–13 year olds still learning to read. Developed by Ruth Miskin, Read Write Inc. Fresh Start uses a proven phonics-based approach and:

• engages students with high-interest, age-appropriate reading materials.

• accelerates students’ progress with finely levelled Modules, supplemented by age-appropriate Anthologies.

• includes a clear structure to help you fit Fresh Start into your timetable, with step-by-step teacher guidance and detailed lesson plans that integrate all reading activities.

Fresh Start can be delivered flexibly, depending on the number of students who need it in your school, and the number of staff you have available to teach it.

Teacher Handbook

The handbook offers guidance on how to identify students who would benefit from the programme and how to assess them at each stage. Detailed notes show how to teach the Speed Sounds so that students can begin to read the texts and complete the activities in the Fresh Start Modules.

Advice is also included on how to organise Fresh Start in your class or school as well as full guidance on how to timetable and teach each Module in the programme.

Module Pupil Workbooks

Each of the 34 Module workbooks contain a fiction or non-fiction text, providing practice in the sounds and graphemes taught in the phonics lessons. The texts are carefully matched to the students’ phonic level. Students read and discuss the text several times, developing comprehension and fluency.

Each Module also contains a range of activities which develop students’ ability in spelling, punctuation and writing answers to comprehension questions.

Anthology Reading Books

Seven full-colour Anthologies in a lively magazine-style format provide further phonic practice, at home and at school.

• Include a variety of lively nonfiction, poetry, and fiction texts to engage even the most reluctant readers.

• Encourage pupils to read for pleasure with full colour texts including quizzes, playscripts, and comic strips to enjoy.

• Are fully integrated within the Fresh Start programme and support teachers with effective lesson planning and organisation.

We get a lot of feedback about the positive impact of Fresh Start on students’ con dence and ability to access lessons.

Do your students dare set foot on Monster Island? Filled with mythical beasts, treacherous terrain and a castaway captain who may have eaten one too many coconuts — who will manage to escape and who will be marooned forever?

Monster Island is a new adventure series for reluctant and struggling readers aged 12+ with a much lower reading age of 6–7. All six titles have been written by Tim Collins, an expert in writing exciting stories for struggling readers, and this series is no exception. All the swashbuckling action is skilfully contained within a mere 300–500 words per book and is spread amongst amazing and imaginative illustrations; a winning combination to make reading an inviting experience rather than a daunting one.
