ace up your sneakers, and leash up your dog.
Following the success of MMOR during Mardi Gras, the 1st annual Mystic Mutts 5k Race and Mutt Walk is The Haven’s newest project to raise funds and awareness for abused, abandoned and neglected animals. After hearing about races for dogs in other states, Kimberly Ferrari, Chairperson for this event and a runner, decided to start the first one in Fairhope. To make this race unique, there will be a pre party, after party and a raffle. Q-Tip and Gossip Greg from 97.5 WABD will be on site to broadcast the race live. Register by August 20th to ensure you’ll have a T-shirt for race day. Registration also gets you a raffle ticket and entry to the post-race party. Your furry friends will receive treats too. For how and where to register, see the sidebar. ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, GO! DIAMOND IN THE RUFF Though she and her family were skeptical at first, Mary Ludvigsen saw a treasure in Maisy, a Chihuahua she recently adopted from the Haven. Her children thought she looked “pretty old,” and when asked if the dog was cute, her husband said “not so much!” Maisy was found wandering on the highway with a puncture wound in her cheek and several loose teeth. After some medication and care provided by generous donations and the Haven’s staff, Maisy was feeling much better and ready to go home.

Now the family couldn’t be happier with their little diamond in the rough. Maisy enjoys snuggling under bed covers, swimming in the family pool and riding in the car. Mary says “We are grateful to Chris, the Haven staff and generous benefactors for rescuing this sweet little dog and helping us make her part of our family.”
THE GOLDEN GIRL Gail Clifford found an amazing new roommate at the Haven in Sophie, a senior cat aged 11 or 12. Though most people might prefer a cute, cuddly kitten, Gail says that Sophie is not the first senior cat she has adopted, and she will not be the last. Sophie is “not only beautiful, but also affectionate, well behaved, and well trained.” Gail encourages potential adopters to expand their search for the perfect cat to senior cats, “They know what it’s like to be in a loving home, and now they know a shelter or rescue cage.” Sophie now enjoys a happy home with Gail and another senior cat. Gail reports that she is “so grateful for The Haven giving us the chance to enjoy life together.” Right: Gail Clifford poses with Sophie. Photos by Kathie Ono

WEIGHTY MATTERS by Amy Winck
by Liz Tetley
Dr. Marshall, DVM, Haven founder and veterinarian for Banfield weighs in on pet weight.
Q: What are signs your pet is overweight? A: A pet should have a waistline: a slight indentation from the ribs into the abdomen area. Run your hand lightly over the ribs and chest. If you can feel the ribs, that is a good sign. If you cannot feel the ribs without pushing really hard you’ve got an overweight animal. Other signs include arthritis {especially in the back}, breathing difficulties, grooming problems and skin problems. Q: What are the greatest risks for overweight pets? A: Diabetes is our number one issue, with a high rate in cats. Arthritis due to extra weight on the joints. When animals gain weight, they have decreased lung capacity. Fatty liver syndrome. For cats: skin issues because they are unable to groom themselves.
The positive energy created when caring individuals donate their time and talent to help someone in need is contagious. With our ever-changing world and media blasting more negative news than ever in history, we all want to feel happy. The Haven volunteer programs have all the ingredients you need. Volunteers assist the agency in achieving the no-kill mission. They are truly the heart of all nonprofits. Some volunteers arrive to The Haven knowing exactly the role they wish to play in helping our homeless pets. They want to walk and socialize dogs or cats, foster the small orphaned kittens and puppies, help with fundraisers, and more. No matter what role our volunteers play, we know without them we cannot create a no-kill society. This season we have a variety of volunteer opportunities sure to suit just about anyone. If you are looking to find happy again, come over to our shelter. We look forward to welcoming you to our life-saving TEAM.
A: Exercise. Just like with people. Go for walks. Even the animals with arthritis. If they’re walking they’re toning their muscles. Monitor their weight and figure. Adjust the amount of food you’re feeding them based on their weight. Also adjust the suggested feeding amounts listed on food bags to the pet’s metabolic issues. Take into account activity level and the calories your pet needs. Consult with your veterinarian on your pet’s health.

Q: How can you help your pet maintain a healthy weight?
Adopt-a-Palooza A FURRTASTIC SUCCESS by Mary Ardis
I
f you were looking to adopt a Palooza from The Haven in May, you would have been out of luck. However 16 puppies and 14 kittens found furrever homes during the Adopt-A-Palooza event. Thanks to a $1200 grant from Best Friends Animal Society, kittens and puppies under 5 months old took center stage with adoption fees reduced by $40. “Our team did an outstanding job with this project,” said The Haven’s Executive Director Mike Graham. “We are grateful to Best Friends and excited to continue working with Baldwin County animal shelters.” To tame all that puppy energy, certified dog trainer and owner of P’s and Q’s Dog Training, Frances Dauster offered adoptees a $40 rebate on one of her five week Puppy Kindergarten Classes. Those 30 adoptions not only meant a goal met, they brought a 78% increase in adoptions compared to May of 2013. Now that’s something to wag your tail about.
