T
he Haven was founded in 2001 by local veterinarn Dr. Teresa Marshall. Our 501 (c)3 non-profit provides a shelter and finds adoptive homes for abused, neglected, and homeless animals while treating them with love, respect and medical care. Through education and volunteer programs, we promote community awareness of pet overpopulation and responsibility. The Haven is a sanctuary for animals that will be cared for regardless of how long it takes to find them loving homes.
This kitty is always purring. Her heart begins to beat fast the minute she sees you. Mammy is a gorgeous 2-year old, black and white DSH who is ready to meet YOU!
Did you know that The Haven cares for over 50 to 80 homeless pets each day. Your support ensures that these special animals are cared for 365 days a year until a loving home is found. Halo is a publication of The Haven No-Kill Adoption Guarantee Animal Shelter, P ost Box 1063, Fairhope, Alabama 36533.

5,562 animals have graduated from The Haven and entered forever homes since 2000. That’s 11,124 {number of adoptions times two} lives this shelter has saved. Why double? Because when one animal graduates, another can be transferred into its place. Adoptions for 2014 increased more than 30%. Saving all those lives makes Haven staff and volunteers sound like superheroes. But they couldn’t do it all without help from grants and donations. Access to Furever Home: “Grant”ed Grants offset The Haven’s total expenses so more injured and abandoned animals can receive the care they need. In 2014, two Best Friends Animal Society grants lead to 150 of the year’s adoptions. Thanks to the Save Them All grant 120 animals were adopted into new loving homes. With this grant, The Haven’s Project S.A.F.E {Saving Animals from Euthanasia} and participation in the No More Homeless Pets Network, the shelter has been able to extend the formula for a no kill community into other communities. May’s Adopt-a-Palooza saw 30 puppies and kittens pounce their way into new families. Besides covering part of the expenses of sheltering animals, grants have helped The Haven educate the public about the importance of spaying, neutering, microchipping and adopting from shelters rather than breeders.
Cached Donations Thanks to people donating via YouCaring.com, more than enough money was raised to cover special surgeries for Rivers and Ginger. Despite extensive leg injuries, both dogs are recovering and enjoying their new furever families. Applying for grants and conducting cyber fundraisers is only part of what The Haven staff does. Cleaning, feeding and caring for the animals requires a lot of effort. They may not be superheroes, but they still get the jobs done.
Happy Tails From Hurt to Home by Cori Barton
Eight year old Ginger came to the Haven after being picked up as a stray. She had a severe leg fracture and was positive for heartworms. Treatment and recovery would be lengthy and expensive, as well as challenging for Ginger. The community responded by raising the needed funds for her treatment, and Ginger’s happy personality helped her through a successful recovery with her foster mom Leone Jones. “Taking care of a dog with a cast was new to me. Ginger, however, made it easy -when she walked out of The Haven she never looked back.” Ginger made herself at home with her new four legged foster sisters. This big Lab had to get through an entire month of very restricted physical activity until her leg was healed enough for the cast to be removed. Ginger was up to the challenge, and Leone and Ginger celebrated this significant accomplishment with a picnic at the beach! Rehabilitation included short walks and swimming to strengthen Ginger’s repaired leg. Through all of this, Ginger and Leone worked together side by side, knowing that they had become true family to each other. Leone sums up their special bond: “Ginger does not waste a minute not being happy, because she knows she is home. Someone told me that she is one lucky dog - I think I am the lucky one.”

Avengers Assemble! for MMOR 2015 by Sarah Toulson
The time for masks and merry-making will soon be upon us, and the Haven is ready to celebrate the Mardi Gras season in style! Mark your calendars for the 12th
annual Mystic Mutts of Revelry Parade scheduled for February 7th, 2015 at 1:00 pm in beautiful
downtown Fairhope. Our numbers grow every year, and we anticipate the 2015 parade will be no exception. Lots of fun is planned as we parade under the theme “Superheroes to the Rescue!” Feel free to dress up in your Mardi Gras finest or a costume with your favorite furry friend for one of the Eastern Shore’s most heavily anticipated parades! The event will kick off with registration at the Fairhoper’s Community Park beginning at 10:30. The new parade route will go around Faulkner State Community College’s campus and end back at the Community Park. The Mystic Mutts Parade is one of the Haven’s biggest annual fundraisers, made successful by generous donations and countless hours of work provided by our volunteers. This year, our fundraising goal is $15,000, which will aid us in continuing our mission of finding forever homes for abused, neglected, and homeless animals. Please join us and your fellow animal-lovers for a fun time and a wonderful opportunity to be superheroes to the rescue for our furry friends!

Purrfect End of Year Budgeting by Kyla Kelim, Esq.
During the season of counting our blessings it’s hard to focus
on taxes and other mundane things. Yet you might be able to receive and give joy this year by doing so. It’s such a joy to see the direct outcome of your gift, and end of the year tax planning can result in big benefits for you in April when the tax man cometh. •Make a gift before January 1, and lower your tax bill •Donate stock or appreciated assets {may result in a win-win for you and your favorite charity!} •Make a date to avoid missing your opportunity to give and receive! •You may get to donate from your IRA. Stay tuned! •For those who donate so much of yourselves, you can deduct the cost of volunteering. The unreimbursed expenses of rescuing or fostering a pet through a non-profit organization, such as The Haven, are deductible, thanks to a 2011 ruling by the Tax Court. So keep receipts for your vet bills, food, paper towels, real towels, mileage, even a portion of your utility bills may be deductible (check with your tax preparer). This only applies if you are volunteering through a 501(c)(3), and not solely on your own. So many in our community benefit from the blessings our donors bestow. Call The Haven today for more information about helping out, and getting a tax break to boot.
