Hawaii’s incredible culture dates back more than 1,600 years to when Pacific Islanders first arrived on the gorgeous chain of islands. The longstanding traditions and heritage of Hawaii’s people are honored and upheld every year at Aloha Festivals.
Hawaii is currently navigating an unspeakably daunting period, as horrific wildfires have left permanent scars across Maui. Amid the state’s notable challenges, Aloha Festivals will continue this year, bringing people together during what has been a remarkably difficult summer.
The Aloha Festivals have been an annual tradition since 1946. Emerging in the wake of World War II, organizers established this event to spotlight the state’s distinct identity and ensure that Pacific Island culture remained at the forefront of Hawaiian society. While the statewide festival covers several islands, Oahu hosts most of the events. The festival is set to captivate over a million spectators and will run throughout September, featuring a diverse array of approximately 100 events.
The Royal Court Investiture and Opening Ceremony kicks off the Aloha Festivals on September 9th. The Royal Court, selected from a pool of applicants with Hawaiian ancestry, will wear the traditional outfits of Hawaii’s former rulers. They will begin the festivities by conducting an opening ceremony, followed by live music, hula performances, and pageantry.
The Waikiki Hoolaulea, Hawaii’s largest annual block party, is the next major event. It will take place on the evening of September 23rd on Kalakaua Avenue, against the backdrop of Waikiki’s world-famous beach. While there, visitors have the opportunity to stroll along the street, indulge in an array of food, explore arts and crafts, and immerse themselves in cultural displays. Come hungry, as this event is an ideal chance to sample the acclaimed Hawaiian cuisine. Also, several stages will feature live music and dance performances, ensuring an unforgettable evening of fun.
The 75th Annual Floral Parade, the last major event of Aloha Festivals, will be held on September 30th. The Floral Parade features gorgeous floats made from brightly colored flowers, which will cruise through Waikiki. This event will feature a variety of processions, including marching bands, local politicians, and men and women displaying the traditional Hawaiian style of pa’u horseback riding. It serves as the perfect culmination to several weeks of festivities, offering an impressive showcase of Hawaii’s rich diversity and history.
Every year, Aloha Festivals distinguishes itself with a unique theme. Pili’aina, this year’s fitting theme, embodies a profound connection to the land we call home.
