visit countries in South America and Europe. Before taking six years off when the girls were little, Vanessa was an international business consultant with the SBA at Saint Francis University in Loretto, PA, and a grad and undergrad adjunct professor for International Business.
Vanessa started in real estate first, and while taking her license class, she suggested I get mine, too, even if it was just to help us buy our next home. A few months later, I decided to go for broke and quit my job at Time Warner and the rest is history. Good decision.
When we first started, we didn’t work together at all. We had our own clients, mainly because Vanessa was not yet a team player. Vanessa did mostly listings, and I worked with buyers, but we started to meet jointly with new clients who appreciated our dual input and repeat clients have become numerous. Today, we run a four member team, and Vanessa and I work together, as she is detail-oriented and I am big-picture. Vanessa is data-driven, and I am more conceptual for our clients. Our business is 90% referral. Vanessa is type A, and I am type B, so I have to let Vanessa be in charge (to stay married), and it works out well. She is the rigid planner, and I am the improviser (“To perform or make quickly from materials and sources available, without previous planning”). Vanessa does most of the contracts as well as paperwork and data entry. If she has nothing to do, she will call one of “my” clients or prospects and become the agent of record, which is fine with me. Office tasks come easy to her, and she tends to worry when business slows down, even for a week, while I ignore the waves and see the ocean.
We met in the spring of 2003 when I was running for city council in Altoona, PA. Vanessa had just moved from Lima, Peru, to work for a local university nearby. I got word that a beautiful, sophisticated Peruvian woman had just moved to town. As Caesar said, the die had been cast. I found out Vanessa would be at a business after hours, and I made sure I was there. It was love at first sight, and I knew she was the one. She took a little longer...
We have been together for 20 years and married 17 years. We have two daughters, Isabella, 16 and Chiara, 13. The girls are as beautiful as their mother, good students, and very athletic. Currently, they are deeply involved in volleyball, both indoor and beach while Chiara is now into lacrosse. We also have Jingles, a 112- pound black Lab and Great Dane mix. Best Dog Ever.
Joe was born in Pittsburgh, and my family moved to Altoona when I was 9. Vanessa, on the other hand, was born and raised in Lima, Peru and has traveled the world, living in many places. She got her master’s degree at the University of Spain in the Canary Islands and lived in California for almost a year.
Our favorite date night is watching Unsolved Mysteries or Forensic Files in bed. Well, also Nightly cruises on the boat and drinks and dinner afterward.
No one remembers how I proposed to Vanessa but of course, she helped pick the ring! Before real estate, Joe got his degree in microbiology but, soon after graduation, found out that it was not his passion to work in a lab. He got into sales at his father’s insurance agency and, later, direct and business-to-business in the cable industry. Vanessa had a business major with a focus on international business. She worked in Peru in two transnational companies that sent her to
I keep her attitude up and act as a coach since I am more even-keel after 30 years in sales. I do most of the networking, which comes naturally since I can talk to pretty much anyone, and Vanessa stays in touch and is up to date on listings in almost every neighborhood; her memory is amazing. I facilitate her focusing like a laser every morning at home as she looks at every new listing and remembers almost all of them and I drive the girls to school.
Vanessa loves to connect people to people, always searching for who does what and how to help. Vanessa brings the business mind to every transaction, and I bring the relationship-building. We dedicate a lot of our weekdays to studying the market and consulting with our clients. We share the calendar and usually meet jointly with new clients; couples selling couples is a very successful approach. Our secret? Happy wife, happy life, which takes both of us to achieve.
