welcome

Hello and welcome to the second edition of HaveringLife magazine. We are very proud to bring you the best that Havering has to offer, from fashion and interiors, to local events and food. We kick off this issue with a fantastic feature celebrating 40 years of Fairkytes Arts Centre – looking at its history, as well as some of the great classes offered to residents living in Havering today. Dave Sherman gets his running shoes on for some al fresco exercise in the borough, whilst dog trainer Emma Robins wonders if we can learn more about the way we live our lives from our furry friends. In our new travel section, HaveringLife interviews 3 ladies about why they’ve made the move from England to Australia, plus we hop on the Eurostar to Brussels for a weekend away in this Belgian city. We hope you enjoy our bigger and better issue and would love to hear your feedback, get in touch by emailing hello@haveringlife.co.uk.

With many thanks to: Dave Sherman, Sarah-Jane Lewis, Emma Robins, Sarah Lloyd, Kelly Youlton, Michelle Castelo and David Christie

REGULARS: THE SECRET SINGLE

The only conclusion I can come to is that sending it turns the guy on and therefore he thinks it does the same for me. But guys, one essential thing to note is women are not men. Seeing and being sent the infamous ‘manhood’ shot does about as much for me sexually, as watching someone be sick and then eat it. There is no reason for it. Not even if we are ‘friends with benefits.’ I’d rather the suspense and surprise like Christmas – of opening and seeing it for myself the first time. Guys need to realise that should they send me the said picture, the following texts are likely to be exchanged between me and my best friend(s)…

Me: You are never going to believe it, but this guy has sent me a picture of his ‘you know.’ Friend: WOW, what a weirdo… why did he do that, did you ask him to? Did you send him a picture of –––? Me: No! who knows – he said he thought he’d send me something to cheer me up…?! Hang on a minute I’ll send it to you… Friend: Ewww look at it… not sure it should look like that? Me: Oh yeah I see what you mean… and I haven’t even met him yet! Let’s delete it. But hang on… I’ll show Abbie, Lisa and Emma first ;-)

On the other hand with my gay best friend: Me: You are never going to believe it, but this guy has sent me a picture of his ‘you know.’ Gay best friend: Seriously? Can you forward it to me?

Is this what men want us to do… ridicule them at every point? Men – women are not nearly as obsessed with your manhood as much as you are. If we’ve not met yet then a picture is not really going to make me want to… in fact I’ll more likely be running in the other direction! But for now I thank every man who has sent me such photos – as my word, they have been great entertainment… See Sarah’s blog for more Secret Single stories at www.thesecretsingle.tumblr.com 35

The dog divas aim is to promote responsible ownership and demonstrate that ALL dog breeds are capable of great obedience and companionship. My passion and area of expertise involves a more troubled area of dog ownership, and one where most owners are unable to pinpoint the cause of and how to rectify the situation. Aggression is a growing issue for many notorious breeds but it’s a myth that only certain breeds are affected. My mission as the dog diva is to help those owners get some control back and work alongside their companion. Like every Glamorous diva I need a personal assistant and this for me is my beautiful Doberman Naala. She is a prime example of how the right handling approach can give you an in tune working and living environment. I’m here to demonstrate that even basic training techniques will allow your dog to gain general etiquette and also educate people on the importance of respect that both man and dog require for a harmonious relationship. TRAVEL

WHERE TO STAY The 4 star art-deco NH Atlanta Brussels is reasonably priced and in a good location close to cafes, restaurants and bars as well as extensive shopping. La Grand Place is a short walk away. Having breakfast on the rooftop terrace in the sun overlooking Brussels is a must. www.nh-hotels.com WHAT TO SEE & DO Belguim is renowned for its chocolate and beer, so this is the ideal place to stock up, with many chocolate shops offering a wide range of treats, and several specialist beer shops. Grand Place is the bustling central square in Brussels and here you’ll find lots of cafes and restaurants with

outside seating (and heaters in the winter), ideal for watching the world go by. Well worth a visit is the famous Manneken Pis fountain, where the small boy statue is often dressed in costume. There is a small market in the square just behind Grand Place selling handmade goods and souvenirs. Avenue Louise is a busy main road with high-end clothes boutiques, whilst for art lovers there is the Magritte Exhibtion at 3 Rue de la Régence. FURTHER AFIELD Brussels is a good base for taking daytrips if you are staying for a few days. The historic city of Bruges is a just a train journey away.

A ride on the city’s metro system to line 6/Heysel will bring you to The Atomium – a futuristic looking structure made from spheres, built in 1958. It houses temporary and permanent exhibitions and has a fantastic viewing platform so take your camera. Located at the foot of the Atomium is Mini Europe. From London’s Big Ben to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, here you can see all of Europe’s most famous landmarks in scaled replica. GETTING THERE The Eurostar starts from £69 return per person and takes around 2 hours from London’s St Pancras or Ebbsfleet International. www.eurostar.com. 69
