Hello and welcome to the summer edition of HaveringLife magazine. We are very proud to bring you a mix of articles and style pages, from fashion and interiors, to local events and food. This issue we are treated to a guided tour of one of Havering’s most recognisable landmarks – Upminster Windmill, to learn about how the mill works, and a little about its fascinating history. ‘Mumpreneur’ Jade Foster takes a moment out of her busy schedule to explain how her successful entertainment business Face the Fun Parties & Events came about, and what the future holds. HaveringLife also looks at the other side of ‘faceless’ social media – how it can bring local people together in person, whether that be for romantic relationships, friendships or neighbourly advice. HaveringLife visits one the of the boroughâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most recognisable landmarks â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Upminster Windmill

side from the fabulous independent restaurants, shops and beauty parlours, Upminster is home to a real local treasure – one of the very best examples of a smock mill in the country. The name comes from its shape, the flare at the

declared unsafe. Today, exploring the mill is like stepping back in time. However many times Upminster Windmill has been taken for granted, and glanced at from the road walking past – there is nothing like seeing it up close and appreciating its sheer size – standing at an impressive 60ft high. HaveringLife went along to one of the open days earlier in the summer, where volunteer Len – who

is very knowledgeable about his windmills, and encompasses everything that there is to love about Havering – educated Upminster’s culture-seekers on the inner workings. The sails we were told, work like large venetian blinds, in that they can be opened to let the wind through when the mill is not in use, and closed to allow the wind to turn them when it is. Len punctuates the tour with interesting facts

and amusing stories, and tells us that his wife once expressed her wish to be strapped to one of the sails for a whizz around the mill – somewhat scary considering they match the height with a 60ft diameter! Far from being a boring history lesson that must be endured, the visit to the mill is made interesting and memorable by our guide for whom the mill is clearly a passion. After learning about 9

the history of the mill and taking a look at the excavation works outside, a steep climb up the wooden steps takes us to the very top of the mill. This is the dust floor â&#x20AC;&#x201C; so-called as it stops dust and dirt from

travelling down the mill and contaminating the flour. The cap is also here â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the part at the top of the windmill which turns to catch the wind and enable the sails to spin. Down a level, and the bin floor sorts out

the grain, one to ensure itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ready for cleaning before grinding, another for sorting the chaff and husks which will be made to produce animal feed, and a third which feeds to the boulder on the meal floor. And according to Len, the trapdoor is where naughty school children are fed! Descending the steep stairs down to the stone floor, the flour is then ground, and down another level, on the meal floor, it is finally sieved.

On the ground floor, it is weighed – and one of the machines is older than the mill itself, dating back to 1780. The sacks are then filled via chutes, ready for sale. Nowadays, the ground floor is a hub of information, with fascinating old photographs and historical snippets about the mill. There is even an old T. Abraham stamp that would have been used to print on the bags of flour. It is a lovely story that this windmill,

over 200 years old, stayed in the same family for over seventy years before its closure, and that it has been proudly preserved ever since by Havering residents. There are plenty of open days this summer, to see for yourself, and the mill is definitely the jewel in Upminster’s crown – long may she reign. www.upminster windmill.co.uk

Mixing business with pleasure

HaveringLife meets â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;mumpreneurâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Jade Foster, to chat about her party and events business and what the future holds

ade Foster is busy. The mum of two is scouring the borough for suitable venues for her future events, sending out information packs to her stallholders and dreaming up new ideas. craft fair company, who were asking for reps in the Essex area to set up their own events. I jumped on board because I thought I could do a better job than the organisers I had previously dealt with. By 2013 I began to build up a database of stallholders and my mind was buzzing

with lots of ideas that I couldn’t expand on whilst working under somebody else’s name. So, I ran my last event with them at the end of the year and decided to add an events section to the existing party business. Face the Fun Parties & Events was born, and I have not looked back since.”

EVENTS EXPERT Jade’s company now organises events such as wedding fairs, charity nights and pampering evenings, many of which also help charities close to her heart. “We are always looking for unique and ‘out there’ ideas to keep the events fresh and stand out compared to all the others.” The main aim for the business going forward, is to fine-tune what works and what doesn’t and eventually come up with regular events that evolve year on year. “We continually look to better ourselves. Not all of the events are successful but that’s because we are always trying new ideas, new venues and new themes. Once we have

established what works and what the public want, we would like to continue with that on an annual basis.” LIVING THE DREAM By setting up on her own it’s allowed Jade to pursue the ultimate goal in ‘having it all’ – a job she loves that enables her to spend as much time at home with her sons as possible. “The best thing I ever did was to

start my own business. At first, it seemed so daunting and I didn’t know where to begin. However, I believe that because I found what I

TAN SAFE

START RIGHT

Exfoliating the skin all over will remove dead skin cells and prepare it for tanning. Shaving beforehand is also a good idea. Starting off properly will make your tan last longer. 36

LOTION UP

Never step outside on a hot day unprotected. Find the SPF that suits you, generally this will initially be a high factor which can be SPF30 lotion, lowered later ÂŁ2.79, Aldi, when you have Upminster a little colour. Reapply regularly,

especially after swimming. At the end of the day, shower to remove all traces then moisturise the skin.

KEEP YOUR COOL

Make sure you have ways to cool down when it gets too hot. A dip in the sea or pool is

he internet has certainly changed the way we live. Shopping can be done online, creating a world-wide store for everything you could want. Getting advice

on anything under the sun is just a click away, booking a holiday and learning about a new area, made simple. Communicating with friends in far-flung places has never been

easier, with Facebook, Skype and email â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the way in which we interact with each other, changed forever. Many think it has gone too far â&#x20AC;&#x201C; when was the last time you

called a friend instead of commenting on their Facebook post? People seem attached to their phones, connected to each other digitally 24/7, yet with no time to just enjoy the world around them and actually speak to each other in person. But is this really true? The internet in many ways, is actually bringing strangers together, and creating new relationships and friendships – and the best thing about it, is that it’s with local people. Internet dating gives people the chance to meet in person, based on shared interests, and initial attraction (from photographs). This is proving the perfect solution for the timepoor or those who have a specific idea about

the kind of person they would like to meet. It is certainly a lucrative business – in 2008, the United States generated $957 million in revenue from online dating services. Tinder was launched in 2012. What makes it different from a dating site, is that it is a location-based app, on which users can indicate

HaveringLife heads to independently-owned Bistro 101 on the high street, for some delicious home-cooked food

fter Sorrento restaurant which HaveringLife visited and reviewed some time ago, and several local Indian restaurants, high up in review site Tripadvisorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top 5 restaurants in Upminster â&#x20AC;&#x201C; sits Bistro 101. The restaurant is still relatively new to

the area, and is family owned by Debra and Bruce. They use locally sourced ingredients, and Bruce, the chef, has over 30 years experience working in 4 and 5 star London hotels. This all meant that we had high hopes before visiting for dinner on a sunny Friday evening. First impressions were

good. The restaurant is not huge and very much caters for those with a love of good food and good company rather than huge rowdy groups of people. The decor is modern, yet welcoming. Staff were warm and friendly but not overbearing, and the menu was a good size, with a mix of meat, fish

and vegetarian dishes. The prawn and crayfish crostini starter was delicious with fresh seafood in abundance, a generous portion and good indication of the quality to come. My dining companion’s mushroom loaded with blue cheese sat on a spinach, crouton and shallot salad with balsamic syrup, and was also very good. Mains arrived – the homemade beefburger a couple of inches thick, speared with a row of juicy prawns. The sautéed duck breast was served cooked to perfection, with a very tasty plum sauce and gratinated potatoes. Somehow finding room for dessert, we ordered the chocolate marquise – a rich

chocolate dessert, complemented with the tartness of the raspberry sauce surrounding it. Another old favourite also crept in – an apple and strawberry crumble with custard, which arrived as a perfectly formed individual portion in a ramekin.

HaveringLife travels to the stunning Greek island of Santorini, for some summer sun and exploration

ooking across at the peaceful Caldera, it’s hard to believe that Santorini actually formed after a huge volcanic eruption. The small Greek island is famed for its stunning architecture and views, dotted with little blue and white domed churches. The village of Oia is located at the north west of Santorini and is said to be one of the most beautiful on the island. The many shops and restaurants 60

are found along narrow pedestrianised streets – offering everything from traditional Greek food such as Meze and Souvlaki, to souvenir shops and art galleries. Daytrippers arrive by the coach load, but by late afternoon Oia quietens down, and the moment the sun goes down can be enjoyed by those staying in the area, at one of the coveted ‘sunset view’ restaurant tables, cocktail in hand. Fira (or ‘Thira’), the

capital, is less than half an hour’s drive away from Oia. It is a place to enjoy the hustle and bustle, being a much livelier town. Here you’ll find alongside the shops and restaurants, a larger selection of bars and pubs. For €5 you can be whizzed down to the Old Port via cable car. A wonderful way to spend the day - if it is not too hot, is to walk from Fira to Oia. The varied walk, which goes from paved

paths through town, to dirt tracks around the mountains, takes around 3 hours without stopping – though pausing to enjoy the stunning views and refresh with a drink or two is a must, especially in the summer. Sensible shoes, a bottle of water and sunscreen are all definitely required, as of course, is a camera. Being volcanic, the island of Santorini has black sand beaches. One of the largest of

these is Perissa, at the south east of the island, which benefits from being served by a strip of restaurants, making it possible to regularly order food and drinks without even leaving your sun lounger.
