Returning Board president looks to 2016 Pam Burke Havre Daily News While the new year traditionally ushers in a new president for the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors with the new calendars, 2016 will, once again, see Shawn Holden at the helm. “I volunteered to stay on as president for an additional year,” Shawn said. “There were some changes in the Chamber board of execs that kind of just happened and so we need to keep the same board members, so that’s just the way it is.” Shawn is co-owner of Holden’s Hot Wheels at 1st Street and 5th Avenue with his wife, Christy. He said they have been supporters of Relay for Live, Montana State UniversityNorthern, Havre High School, youth baseball and youth soccer, among other events and organizations through the years. He also tries to get the Holden’s Hot

Shawn has been a Chamber member Shawn said he has, at times, found since Holden’s Hot Wheels opened in 1994, and
a board member for the past seven years. One of the changes the Chamber board started working toward during Shawn’s first year as president is to encourage young people to participate in Chamber activities. The board has approved adding a new, nonvoting member from Northern. University personnel will nominate a list of candidates and board members will make a choice based on those recommendations and interviews. Shawn said he'll be working to inspire the next generation of Havreites to step up. The intent is to bring a new perspective and input that might not come from an established business owner — add a fresh voice and energy to the many activities the Chamber fuels throughout the year. “We have a great group of people throughout the community that are part of the Chamber,” Shawn said. “I think that’s the reason why I wanted to stay; I enjoy what the chamber accomplishes and being a part of that.”

A note from the Executive Director We are very proud that we have grown over the past 107 years to be a very vibrant and active Chamber that works every day to have a positive effect on the business climate and the whole community of Havre. This has come to be because of the great members we have who believe in our efforts and work, because of an awesome community that supports what we do and because of the volunteers who stand by the mission of the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce to improve the overall business climate of our members through programs that help stimulate growth and promote civic pride. Thank you to all of you for your commitment to Havre. Your Board is a dedicated and professional team that is focused on business and
their members. They are also very committed to Havre being a strong and active community in which to work and live. I would like to thank them for their time and also for their passion toward our community. We will continue this passion and dedication into and through 2016. The focus to market Havre as a great place to take some time and look around will continue. The Chamber’s new website, launched last year during our annual meeting, will have a focus this year to grow to be a tool for business. The Board is also looking at ways to enhance our Facebook listing to also be a better tool for business and to offer Facebook clinics to share the great opportunities for business on Facebook and the Web. We will also continue to look at programs and projects that will continue to benefit our membership and the community. The Havre Chamber is a team focused on serving, promoting, and protecting our members.

Shawn Holden ~ Holden's Hot Wheels The Hi-Line and Havre is an amazing place that I am very proud to call home. I was born and raised in Havre, graduating from Havre High School and enlisting in the Montana Army National Guard. The 12 years I spent in the Guards continues to teach me strong work ethics, dedication and perseverance that I had to learn in my younger years. While growing up, I spent a lot of time with my aunts and uncles working with them on their family farms and ranches, helping my uncle with his tree trimming business and also shoe shining at my father’s barber shop. I have been fortunate and blessed to own and operate our auto accessory/ auto glass business with my wife, Christy, and our two sons, Jacob and Kendall. With our recent business investment in our new location, I am even more excited and look forward to being an active member of the business community and helping Havre to move in a positive direction. "Wow, 2015 flew by. I would like to thank all of our local businesses and our community for their support and involvement in the activities and the many events that are organized by the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce. I enjoy being a part of the Festival Days Parade, Sounds on the Square, the Christmas tree lighting and so many other events. I am proud to be a part of a group that gets things done! I am looking forward to 2016 and for what the Chamber has in store for our community. My goal for 2016 is to inspire the next generation to get more involved in our community. I believe Havre is a GREAT place to live and to raise a family and that Havre is truly the best kept secret."

They completed their twelfth half-marathon race in 2015 and are planning the undertaking of their first marathon scheduled for October. “2016 is time for Havre! There are a lot of remarkable happenings in Havre. Along with that there are many remarkable people who make up our community. Annually we have Havre Pride to clean up our town and a lot of our community comes together to get this done. But why does it have to start and stop with one organized event? I would like to make a friendly challenge with the community of Havre to push the boundaries and pay it forward! If you see garbage while out and about, pick it up. Picking up will not only improve how the environment looks but also how clean it is. Cleaning up our community will help people to notice that they also can contribute to keeping it picked up. If you are walking downtown or at the mall, smile to passersby. Be the portal to our community, give directions, and make suggestions on places to shop, eat or sightsee. Together, let’s make Havre a place that others want to visit and a place we are proud to call home. After all, Havre, It’s the People ... who make the difference!”
Outgoing Chamber President — Thank You, Debbie Callahan… “ A special thanks goes to Debbie Callahan. Debbie will complete two terms of serving on the Chamber Board at the end of 2016. She is currently serving as Past President on the Executive Committee. Debbie was first president in 1999 when the Chamber embarked upon one of their largest projects ever – Town Square. Today, 16 years later, the Square is the cornerstone for our community and Debbie continues to be active with the project as the Chair of the committee. She first got involved with the Chamber in 1987 as a member of the Ag Committee. The connect was perfect with background in farming and an ag lender. Fast forward to today, and Debbie still has a deep passion for Havre and the work of the Chamber. I can’t say thank you enough for her willingness to lead the Chamber not once, but twice. Her desire to make a difference is unsurpassed. Thank you Deb for having the desire to want to move something good to even better. I will cherish your leadership, partnership and friendship and I look forward to working together in the coming years to make Havre a community we can all be proud off.”

31st Year for Chamber Gift Certificates sets record! Over $337,000 sold! “Thank you to the businesses that participate in the Chamber’s Gift Certificate program and a big thank you to the community for supporting the program in 2015,” said Debbie Callahan, outgoing president of the Chamber Board of Directors.
More than $337,000 in Chamber Gift Certificates were purchased in 2015, a new record high for sales. “The first year, sales were $17,000. The program has had huge growth since that first year.” The Chamber’s Gift Certificate Program, started in 1985 and works throughout the year but has a large impact during the holidays. More than $208,000 in Chamber Gift Certificates were purchased in November and December alone!
The Chamber Gift Certificate program encourages shopping within the local business community. Local businesses are the largest contributor to local nonprofit organizations, schools, hospitals and community events. Most of the community programs and activities would not be possible without the generous support and dollars donated each year by local businesses and their employees. Local businesses create the multitude of jobs that our neighbors and friends depend on to sustain their quality of life.

Havre offers its own opportunity every summer for visitors to connect to the community, farmers and ranchers and businesses at Saturday Market. It has become an important part of the community, providing a safe, healthy, weekly event in the downtown neighborhood during the summer. The market is held Saturdays at Town Square. The market is visited by many — from local families to travelers passing through or visiting Havre. The market place also provides community social benefits. The festive nature of the market creates an enjoyable atmosphere to visit with friends and make new acquaintances. All area gardeners, bakers and crafters are extended an invitation to participate. Vendors are welcome to set up every Saturday starting July 9 and running through Saturday, Sept. 17. Contact the Chamber at 2654383 to participate.
What a run it has been keeping $7 million in our Havre economy during the holiday season. The Christmas Cash program brings together the business community in a common goal to stimulate holiday shopping in Havre. The program has had a significant impact on the local economy over the past years by keeping millions in Havre supporting local businesses. Christmas Cash continues to make a positive economic impact during the holiday season. $140,000 in Christmas Cash circulated through participating Chamber mem-
ber businesses this holiday season. The Havre Area Chamber of Commerce's Christmas Cash program was started in 1990 when a group of business leaders decided to embark on the project after securing a partnership with every local lending institution and many Chamber member businesses getting on board to support the program. The original goal then was “to stimulate local holiday shopping and support the local businesses that support our community all year
long through donations and sponsorships.” That goal remains intact today. “A big thank-you needs to go out to the community for using and supporting the Chamber’s Christmas Cash program and to the participating financial institutions for continuing to be our partners in providing this program to the community,” said Shawn Holden, president of the Chamber Board of Directors. “The success of the program is threefold: an ongoing partnership
with our local lending institutions; solid support from the participating Chamber member businesses and the ongoing loyalty from the community that use the program each holiday season,” said Debbie Vandeberg, executive director. The Board of Directors and participating Chamber member businesses believe both programs play a definite economic roll in our community and take great pride in the positive impact the Chamber Gift Certificate Program and Christmas Cash have on local business.

CHAMBER WORKPLAN
