Bob Quinn to speak at Chamber Luncheon Staff Havre Daily News

Guest speaker at the 2017 Annual Chamber Luncheon Meeting will be Bob Quinn, an organic farmer, plant researcher and entrepreneur from Big Sandy.

Quinn will be speaking about growing new business concepts, thinking innovatively about business and opportunities that arise or can be nurtured.

He has trademarked the organic summer wheat grain Kamut and is the president of Kamut International Ltd. His Kamut brand khorasan wheat is used in products sold in about 40 countries around the world. He also developed, produces and sells the organic snack Kracklin' Kamut out of a shop in Big Sandy.

Quinn said he has a passion for organic farming not only because it is profitable, but because it is ethical, healthy and good for the planet. He loves to challenge convention, especially when it comes to more efficient and self-sustainable ways

of farming. On his orchard and farm he grows corn, apples and grapes, among other fruit and vegetables uncommon in Montana, along with his grains and other rotation crops.

Bob was born in Atlanta in 1947 and by the next year his family had moved back to Big Sandy, where he was raised, to take over the family farm.

He graduated from Big Sandy High School, after which he earned a bachelor’s degree in botany and a Master of Science in plant pathology from Montana State University, as well as a doctorate in plant biochemistry from University of California, Davis.

He is involved with many areas of agricultural research from the anti-inflammatory properties of ancient wheat to best practices for organic farming to growing dry land and saline seeptolerant vegetables.

Chamber Gift Certificates vSupports Chamber members vAnd keeps $$$ in Havre supporting our businesses Chamber programs kept close to ½ mIllion $$$ in Havre in 2016.

The Chamber’s Gift Certificate and Christmas Cash Programs encourages shopping within the local business community. Local businesses are the largest contributors to local nonprofit organizations, schools, hospitals and community events. Most of the community programs and activities would not be possible without the generous support and dollars donated each year by local businesses and their employees. Local businesses create the multitude of jobs that our neighbors and friends depend on to sustain their quality of life.

Thank You Thank-you to the businesses that participate in the Chamber’s Gift Certificate program and a big thank-you to the community for supporting the program in 2016. From that first year’s sales 32 years ago of $17,000 to today with $331,500.

Impact of both programs If the $458,400 is turned a conservative 3 times, that becomes over a million dollar economic impact on Havre’s economy. The Board of Directors and participating Chamber member businesses believe the program plays a definite economic roll in our community and take great pride in the positive impact the Chamber Gift Certificate Program has on local business.

Chamber Christmas Cash Christmas Cash continues to make a positive economic impact during the holiday season. $7 million has stayed in Havre since the Christmas Cash program was organized in 1990 by a group of business leaders looking at a way to energize local shopping during the holidays.

We came together as interested citizens of Havre to create a destination, a restful park area in the heart of the downtown historic district for residents of Havre and visitors to enjoy community activities, including a farmers’ market, weekly summer music concerts, BBQs and more.

The lease was signed in January 2001 and the community tree was donated and planted by Larry Adams, and the first tree lighting at Town Square was that December. Electrical work began in the Spring 2002 and the park was completed and ribbon cutting took place during Festival Days that fall.

To celebrate the years Town Square has been the cornerstone for the community we start with 2001, the tree lighting and fast forward to 2017 … 16 years the Square has provided an awesome space for community activities like Sounds on the Square and Saturday Market.

Joe Ross - Cavaliers for Men & Women Joe was born and raised in Havre and is a graduate of Havre High School and MSU-Northern. He worked in Las Vegas before returning to the Hi-Line to work with his family at Cavaliers for Men & Women. Joe is president of the Havre Day Activity Board of Directors and enjoys playing music in his spare time. He and his wife, Riki, have five children, Lindsey, Myles, Ayreanna, Morgan and Tori.

Enjoy the Square… celebrating 17 years this summer providing community activities.

Enjoy music and market this summer!

Havre offers its own opportunity every summer for visitors to connect to the community, farmers, ranchers and businesses at Saturday Market.

It has become an important part of the community, providing a safe, healthy, weekly event in the downtown neighborhood during the summer. The market is held Saturdays at Town Square.

The market is visited by many — from local families to travelers passing through or visiting Havre.

The market place also provides community social benefits.

The festive nature of the market creates an enjoyable atmosphere to visit with friends and make new acquaintances.

All area gardeners, bakers and crafters are extended an invitation to participate. Vendors can participate in the Market July through September.

Sounds on the Square will continue this summer starting in June.

Thanks to Joe Ross, Chamber Board member, for his energy to organize a great group of bands, that present music from country to jazz, contemporary and everything in between.

Pack up that picnic basket and dine al fresco with friends, neighbors and family at the Square, all while enjoying the music of our talented local bands.

The summer music series is funded through a sponsorship grant from NorthWestern Energy and with funds from the Sleeter Fund.

The bands are area bands that provide two hours of great music entertainment at Town Square from June through August.

Stacy Mantle was born and raised in Havre. She graduated from Northern Montana College (MSU-Northern) with a graphic design degree. She has been in the newspaper business for the past 16 years, which includes the past five years at her current position as publisher at the Havre Daily News. She is involved in the community as a member of the Havre Crimestoppers Committee, MSU-Northern Alumni Foundation’s Alumni Committee, Havre Chamber Tourism Committee, Havre Chamber Ambassadors Committee, Montana Newspaper Association Board member and 1st vice president on the Havre Chamber Board of Directors. Stacy has been an active member of the Havre community and loves to volunteer. She and her husband, Bob, have two children, Reed (9) and Rylin (4). In her free time she enjoys painting, camping, golfing and spending time with her family and friends.

“I was very excited when I was asked to join the Chamber board; it meant that I could be a part of something that does so much for our great community. I feel very fortunate to have lived in Havre all of my life and now get the pleasure of raising my children here as well. Havre is a great place to live and, with what the Chamber does for us in the community, it will only get better."

Director at Large Carson Sweeney ~ NorthWestern Energy Carson Sweeney grew up in Lewistown and started with NorthWestern Energy in 2011. He moved to Havre with NorthWestern Energy as the District Manager in February 2013. His wife is an RN on the ER/ICU floor at Northern Montana Hospital. They are both Fergus Golden Eagle graduates from Lewistown and had their first child in 2016.

Curt Lineweaver ~ D.A. Davidson Curt Lineweaver grew up in the Chester-Joplin-Inverness area. He is the fifth generation of his family to call the Hi-Line home. In September 2016 he became a financial advisor with D.A. Davidson after being a CPA in public accounting for 10 years. His wife, Autumn, is a project manager for Clausen and Sons and he has two children Alex, 4, and Cooper, 2, and a dog named Truffles. Curt enjoys hunting, fishing, camping and trap shooting with his family.

Shawn Holden ~ Holden's Hot Wheels The Hi-Line and Havre is an amazing place that I am very proud to call home. I was born and raised in Havre, graduating from Havre High School and enlisting in the Montana Army National Guard. The 12 years I spent in the Guards continues to teach me strong work ethics, dedication and perseverance that I had to learn in my younger years. While growing up, I spent a lot of time with my aunts and uncles working with them on their family farms and ranches, helping my uncle with his tree trimming business and also shoe shining at my father’s barber shop. I have been fortunate and blessed to own and operate our auto accessory/auto glass business with my wife, Christy, and our two sons, Jacob and Kendall. With our recent business investment in our new location, I am even more excited and look forward to being an active member of the business community and helping Havre to move in a positive direction.

"Wow, 2016 flew by. I would like to thank all of our local businesses and our community for their support and involvement in the activities and the many events that are organized by the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce. I enjoy being a part of the Festival Days Parade, Sounds on the Square, the Christmas tree lighting and so many other events. I am proud to be a part of a group that gets things done! I am looking forward to 2017 and for what the Chamber has in store for our community. My goal for 2017 is to inspire the next generation to get more involved in our community. I believe Havre is a GREAT place to live and to raise a family and that Havre is truly the best kept secret.”

My first is to our outgoing president, Shawn Holden, who has served two years at the helm and has been my “go-to” guy. Shawn has shared a passion of mine while serving as Chamber president … to clean up Havre and present our community as to one that cares and has pride. During the summer months, at the crack of dawn, you could catch Shawn, as he single handedly tried to get rid of weeds in the downtown business area! Sometimes with family and employees at his side and sometimes alone, Shawn has worked hard during Havre Pride cleanup to get rid of the litter that cluttered our community, along roadsides and alleys. Shawn also participates with the Chamber’s Tourism Committee — he understands the importance of tourism to Havre, and how he can help. The past couple of years, Shawn also has been an active member of an organized group of community folks who want to make Havre look vibrant and colorful, through art. Thank you, Shawn, for believing in the vinyl-wrap project and your helping hand to make them become reality this past summer.

And, thank you for your love of Havre, and wanting to make it better. You aren’t going far — now past president for 2017 — and I know I can still count on you when the need for a partner or a leader arises.”

Again, I say thank you to Debbie! But somehow saying thank you doesn’t seem enough to a special lady who has been a great friend and partner twice as leader of the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce. She has served on the Board for the past two years as your past president. She first led the Chamber in 1999. And during that time, the Chamber embarked upon one of their largest projects ever — Town Square, which has developed to be the cornerstone for our community — and Debbie continues to be active with the project as the chair of the committee. In 2014, she again took the leadership position on the board. Both times as Chamber president her focus has been to make Havre a community we can all be proud of. She also has a deep commitment to the work of the Chamber for Havre. She is always looking at how to make a difference. I will always admire your leadership and partnership and hope our friendship will withhold the test of time. While you won’t be active in the Chamber, I know you will always be there in a time of need. Thanks, Debbie, for your dedication and commitment.

A note from the Executive Director A word from your outgoing President

We are very proud that we have grown over the past 108 years to be a very vibrant and active Chamber that works every day to have a positive effect on the business climate and the whole community of Havre, a mission developed by Havre’s early business men in 1909. The combination of an outstanding group of Chamber directors, a great membership and dedicated committee volunteers provides the Chamber a strong platform for the coming year.

The board is a dedicated and a professional team that is focused on business and its members. Board members are also very committed to Havre being a strong and active community in which to work and live. I would like to thank them for their time and also for their passion toward our community.

The great membership we have believes in our efforts and work. And Havre, the awesome community it is, supports what we do. And last but not least, the volunteers who stand by the mission of the Chamber “to improve the overall business climate of our members through programs that help

stimulate growth and promote civic pride.”

Thank you to all of you for your commitment to the Chamber and to Havre.

We will continue this passion and dedication into and through 2017. The focus to market Havre as a great place to take some time and “look around” will continue. The Chamber’s new website continues to market Havre and inform visitors to the site, www. havrechamber.com, the awesome vacation opportunities we have to offer, along with information regarding our businesses and what Havre has to offer as a community for those looking to relocate. This year, we will focus on making the site an even better tool for business. The board is also looking at ways to enhance our Facebook listing to also be a better tool for business and to offer Facebook clinics to share the great opportunity there is to do business on Facebook and the Web. We will also continue to look at programs and projects that will continue to benefit our membership and the community.

I would like to thank each and every one of you for your support and investment in the Havre Chamber. We couldn’t do what we do with out you! The Havre Chamber is a winning team that is focused on serving, promoting and protecting our members.

Debbie Callahan ~ Independence Bank Deborah Callahan was born and raised in Havre. She graduated from Northern Montana College (MSU-Northern). She has been in the banking field for the past 34 years which includes the past 19 years at her current position as senior vice president at Independence Bank. She currently is involved in the community by being the president of the Bear Paw Development Corp. Board of Directors as well as the Bear Paw Development RLF Loan Committee, member of Havre Day Activity Board, member of the Northern Montana Hospital Foundation Board, chairman of the Havre Chamber Park Committee, chairman of the St. Jude School Trust Committee and currently past president of the Havre Chamber Board of Directors. Debbie has been an active member of the Havre community and loves to volunteer, especially to her Town Square project. She is very proud to be part of HAVRE and this GREAT COMMUNITY we live in.

Debbie is married with two children and two stepchildren. Debbie does enjoy her extra time with her husband, Tim, golfing, running and working on her farm in Malta. They completed their 14th half-marathon race and ran their FIRST full marathon in Des Moines in 2016. She is looking forward to running in a few more states in 2017.

“As I finish my second term on the Chamber board and as its past president twice, I wanted to reflect on some things that I said then in January 1999 and see if they hold true for 2017. Back then, there were a lot of conversations that turned to criticisms of politicians and the political process. Also stated was that I learned from trials, errors and observations during my lifetime, that the answers are always easier when you are on the outside looking in. It is when you are on the inside looking out that the perceptions and answers often change. And finally, that farm produce prices were at their worst. The price per metric ton of winter wheat was $125.29 or $3.41 per bushel.

Fast forward to today ... a recent election keeps politics in the fore front, it is still easier for the outsiders looking in to tell you what to change than to get involved. And finally, we are experiencing some of the lowest prices for our farm production again in this area — price of per metric ton of winter wheat is $142.75 or $3.89 per bushel. Talk about going in a FULL CIRCLE. The one thing that was said back then and holds true today is that we need to pull together and work as a team!

Looking ahead, teamwork and the love of the community is what will keep Havre strong! In closing, focus your attention on where we are going.”

I've sure enjoyed the time I've spent being a part of the Chamber board and learning what our Chamber of Commerce does for our community. I believe the Chamber looks out for our community and always has our best interests in mind. It works hard to promote our area for tourism and as a great recreational place for others to enjoy along with promoting our restaurants and businesses for shopping and services. I think of the Chamber as a car engine ... you can't see it from the outside, but when you open it up or lift the hood and look inside, you can see all the parts that make it work successfully. The Chamber's engine is made up of Debbie, Shari, the Board of Directors,

the special committee groups, and all of our community volunteers. This engine is what makes all of our Chamber-sponsored community events happen. Some of my favorites are the Christmas Tree Lighting, Havre Pride Cleanup Days, the Festival Days Parade and Sounds on the Square.

It has been an honor, a privilege and my pleasure to be a part of such a hard-working crew that has accomplished so much during my term. I would like to thank everyone in this community that volunteers their time.

Just because my term is up doesn't mean I will not be a part of the engine, as we all continue to be in this together. I will be looking forward to seeing you all at the next Chamber event. So like I've said so many times before, if you're not involved, get involved and enjoy ALL that Havre has to offer. It truly is a great place to call HOME. Thanks, everyone!

Board Representatives The Chamber Board of Directors have been working to enhance their communications with key entities within the community. To accomplish that goal they identified three key areas in which to focus on in 2015 and 2016: the city of Havre, MSU-Northern students and Hill County. A note from the Executive Director A word from your outgoing President

We are very proud that we have grown over the past 108 years to be a very vibrant and active Chamber that works every day to have a positive effect on the business climate and the whole community of Havre, a mission developed by Havre’s early business men in 1909. The combination of an outstanding group of Chamber directors, a great membership and dedicated committee volunteers provides the Chamber a strong platform for the coming year.

The board is a dedicated and a professional team that is focused on business and its members. Board members are also very committed to Havre being a strong and active community in which to work and live. I would like to thank them for their time and also for their passion toward our community.

The great membership we have believes in our efforts and work. And Havre, the awesome community it is, supports what we do. And last but not least, the volunteers who stand by the mission of the Chamber “to improve the overall business climate of our members through programs that help

stimulate growth and promote civic pride.”

Thank you to all of you for your commitment to the Chamber and to Havre.

We will continue this passion and dedication into and through 2017. The focus to market Havre as a great place to take some time and “look around” will continue. The Chamber’s new website continues to market Havre and inform visitors to the site, www. havrechamber.com, the awesome vacation opportunities we have to offer, along with information regarding our businesses and what Havre has to offer as a community for those looking to relocate. This year, we will focus on making the site an even better tool for business. The board is also looking at ways to enhance our Facebook listing to also be a better tool for business and to offer Facebook clinics to share the great opportunity there is to do business on Facebook and the Web. We will also continue to look at programs and projects that will continue to benefit our membership and the community.

Debbie Callahan ~ Independence Bank Deborah Callahan was born and raised in Havre. She graduated from Northern Montana College (MSU-Northern). She has been in the banking field for the past 34 years which includes the past 19 years at her current position as senior vice president at Independence Bank. She currently is involved in the community by being the president of the Bear Paw Development Corp. Board of Directors as well as the Bear Paw Development RLF Loan Committee, member of Havre Day Activity Board, member of the Northern Montana Hospital Foundation Board, chairman of the Havre Chamber Park Committee, chairman of the St. Jude School Trust Committee and currently past president of the Havre Chamber Board of Directors. Debbie has been an active member of the Havre community and loves to volunteer, especially to her Town Square project. She is very proud to be part of HAVRE and this GREAT COMMUNITY we live in.

Debbie is married with two children and two stepchildren. Debbie does enjoy her extra time with her husband, Tim, golfing, running and working on her farm in Malta. They completed their 14th half-marathon race and ran their FIRST full marathon in Des Moines in 2016. She is looking forward to running in a few more states in 2017.

“As I finish my second term on the Chamber board and as its past president twice, I wanted to reflect on some things that I said then in January 1999 and see if they hold true for 2017. Back then, there were a lot of conversations that turned to criticisms of politicians and the political process. Also stated was that I learned from trials, errors and observations during my lifetime, that the answers are always easier when you are on the outside looking in. It is when you are on the inside looking out that the perceptions and answers often change. And finally, that farm produce prices were at their worst. The price per metric ton of winter wheat was $125.29 or $3.41 per bushel.

Fast forward to today ... a recent election keeps politics in the fore front, it is still easier for the outsiders looking in to tell you what to change than to get involved. And finally, we are experiencing some of the lowest prices for our farm production again in this area — price of per metric ton of winter wheat is $142.75 or $3.89 per bushel. Talk about going in a FULL CIRCLE. The one thing that was said back then and holds true today is that we need to pull together and work as a team!

Looking ahead, teamwork and the love of the community is what will keep Havre strong! In closing, focus your attention on where we are going.”

I've sure enjoyed the time I've spent being a part of the Chamber board and learning what our Chamber of Commerce does for our community. I believe the Chamber looks out for our community and always has our best interests in mind. It works hard to promote our area for tourism and as a great recreational place for others to enjoy along with promoting our restaurants and businesses for shopping and services. I think of the Chamber as a car engine ... you can't see it from the outside, but when you open it up or lift the hood and look inside, you can see all the parts that make it work successfully. The Chamber's engine is made up of Debbie, Shari, the Board of Directors,

the special committee groups, and all of our community volunteers. This engine is what makes all of our Chamber-sponsored community events happen. Some of my favorites are the Christmas Tree Lighting, Havre Pride Cleanup Days, the Festival Days Parade and Sounds on the Square.

It has been an honor, a privilege and my pleasure to be a part of such a hard-working crew that has accomplished so much during my term. I would like to thank everyone in this community that volunteers their time.

Just because my term is up doesn't mean I will not be a part of the engine, as we all continue to be in this together. I will be looking forward to seeing you all at the next Chamber event. So like I've said so many times before, if you're not involved, get involved and enjoy ALL that Havre has to offer. It truly is a great place to call HOME. Thanks, everyone!

We came together as interested citizens of Havre to create a destination, a restful park area in the heart of the downtown historic district for residents of Havre and visitors to enjoy community activities, including a farmers’ market, weekly summer music concerts, BBQs and more.

The lease was signed in January 2001 and the community tree was donated and planted by Larry Adams, and the first tree lighting at Town Square was that December. Electrical work began in the Spring 2002 and the park was completed and ribbon cutting took place during Festival Days that fall.

To celebrate the years Town Square has been the cornerstone for the community we start with 2001, the tree lighting and fast forward to 2017 … 16 years the Square has provided an awesome space for community activities like Sounds on the Square and Saturday Market.

Joe Ross - Cavaliers for Men & Women Joe was born and raised in Havre and is a graduate of Havre High School and MSU-Northern. He worked in Las Vegas before returning to the Hi-Line to work with his family at Cavaliers for Men & Women. Joe is president of the Havre Day Activity Board of Directors and enjoys playing music in his spare time. He and his wife, Riki, have five children, Lindsey, Myles, Ayreanna, Morgan and Tori.

Enjoy the Square… celebrating 17 years this summer providing community activities.

Enjoy music and market this summer!

Havre offers its own opportunity every summer for visitors to connect to the community, farmers, ranchers and businesses at Saturday Market.

It has become an important part of the community, providing a safe, healthy, weekly event in the downtown neighborhood during the summer. The market is held Saturdays at Town Square.

The market is visited by many — from local families to travelers passing through or visiting Havre.

The market place also provides community social benefits.

The festive nature of the market creates an enjoyable atmosphere to visit with friends and make new acquaintances.

All area gardeners, bakers and crafters are extended an invitation to participate. Vendors can participate in the Market July through September.

Sounds on the Square will continue this summer starting in June.

Thanks to Joe Ross, Chamber Board member, for his energy to organize a great group of bands, that present music from country to jazz, contemporary and everything in between.

Pack up that picnic basket and dine al fresco with friends, neighbors and family at the Square, all while enjoying the music of our talented local bands.

The summer music series is funded through a sponsorship grant from NorthWestern Energy and with funds from the Sleeter Fund.

The bands are area bands that provide two hours of great music entertainment at Town Square from June through August.

Stacy Mantle was born and raised in Havre. She graduated from Northern Montana College (MSU-Northern) with a graphic design degree. She has been in the newspaper business for the past 16 years, which includes the past five years at her current position as publisher at the Havre Daily News. She is involved in the community as a member of the Havre Crimestoppers Committee, MSU-Northern Alumni Foundation’s Alumni Committee, Havre Chamber Tourism Committee, Havre Chamber Ambassadors Committee, Montana Newspaper Association Board member and 1st vice president on the Havre Chamber Board of Directors. Stacy has been an active member of the Havre community and loves to volunteer. She and her husband, Bob, have two children, Reed (9) and Rylin (4). In her free time she enjoys painting, camping, golfing and spending time with her family and friends.

“I was very excited when I was asked to join the Chamber board; it meant that I could be a part of something that does so much for our great community. I feel very fortunate to have lived in Havre all of my life and now get the pleasure of raising my children here as well. Havre is a great place to live and, with what the Chamber does for us in the community, it will only get better."

Director at Large Carson Sweeney ~ NorthWestern Energy Carson Sweeney grew up in Lewistown and started with NorthWestern Energy in 2011. He moved to Havre with NorthWestern Energy as the District Manager in February 2013. His wife is an RN on the ER/ICU floor at Northern Montana Hospital. They are both Fergus Golden Eagle graduates from Lewistown and had their first child in 2016.

"I am honored to be a board member with the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce as well as a member of its executive committee. Havre has a strong community-oriented business mindset and as businesses and citizens we all need to support each other locally."

Curt Lineweaver ~ D.A. Davidson Curt Lineweaver grew up in the Chester-Joplin-Inverness area. He is the fifth generation of his family to call the Hi-Line home. In September 2016 he became a financial advisor with D.A. Davidson after being a CPA in public accounting for 10 years. His wife, Autumn, is a project manager for Clausen and Sons and he has two children Alex, 4, and Cooper, 2, and a dog named Truffles. Curt enjoys hunting, fishing, camping and trap shooting with his family.

Shawn Holden ~ Holden's Hot Wheels The Hi-Line and Havre is an amazing place that I am very proud to call home. I was born and raised in Havre, graduating from Havre High School and enlisting in the Montana Army National Guard. The 12 years I spent in the Guards continues to teach me strong work ethics, dedication and perseverance that I had to learn in my younger years. While growing up, I spent a lot of time with my aunts and uncles working with them on their family farms and ranches, helping my uncle with his tree trimming business and also shoe shining at my father’s barber shop. I have been fortunate and blessed to own and operate our auto accessory/auto glass business with my wife, Christy, and our two sons, Jacob and Kendall. With our recent business investment in our new location, I am even more excited and look forward to being an active member of the business community and helping Havre to move in a positive direction.

"Wow, 2016 flew by. I would like to thank all of our local businesses and our community for their support and involvement in the activities and the many events that are organized by the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce. I enjoy being a part of the Festival Days Parade, Sounds on the Square, the Christmas tree lighting and so many other events. I am proud to be a part of a group that gets things done! My first is to our outgoing president, Shawn Holden, who has served two years at the helm and has been my “go-to” guy. Shawn has shared a passion of mine while serving as Chamber president … to clean up Havre and present our community as to one that cares and has pride. During the summer months, at the crack of dawn, you could catch Shawn, as he single handedly tried to get rid of weeds in the downtown business area! Sometimes with family and employees at his side and sometimes alone, Shawn has worked hard during Havre Pride cleanup to get rid of the litter that cluttered our community, along roadsides and alleys. Shawn also participates with the Chamber’s Tourism Committee — he understands the importance of tourism to Havre, and how he can help. The past couple of years, Shawn also has been an active member of an organized group of community folks who want to make Havre look vibrant and colorful, through art. Thank you, Shawn, for believing in the vinyl-wrap project and your helping hand to make them become reality this past summer.

And, thank you for your love of Havre, and wanting to make it better. You aren’t going far — now past president for 2017 — and I know I can still count on you when the need for a partner or a leader arises.”

Again, I say thank you to Debbie! But somehow saying thank you doesn’t seem enough to a special lady who has been a great friend and partner twice as leader of the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce. She has served on the Board for the past two years as your past president. She first led the Chamber in 1999. And during that time, the Chamber embarked upon one of their largest projects ever — Town Square, which has developed to be the cornerstone for our community — and Debbie continues to be active with the project as the chair of the committee. In 2014, she again took the leadership position on the board. Both times as Chamber president her focus has been to make Havre a community we can all be proud of. She also has a deep commitment to the work of the Chamber for Havre. She is always looking at how to make a difference. I will always admire your leadership and partnership and hope our friendship will withhold the test of time. Bob Quinn to speak at Chamber Luncheon Staff Havre Daily News

Guest speaker at the 2017 Annual Chamber Luncheon Meeting will be Bob Quinn, an organic farmer, plant researcher and entrepreneur from Big Sandy.

Quinn will be speaking about growing new business concepts, thinking innovatively about business and opportunities that arise or can be nurtured.

He has trademarked the organic summer wheat grain Kamut and is the president of Kamut International Ltd. His Kamut brand khorasan wheat is used in products sold in about 40 countries around the world. He also developed, produces and sells the organic snack Kracklin' Kamut out of a shop in Big Sandy.

Quinn said he has a passion for organic farming not only because it is profitable, but because it is ethical, healthy and good for the planet. He loves to challenge convention, especially when it comes to more efficient and self-sustainable ways

of farming. On his orchard and farm he grows corn, apples and grapes, among other fruit and vegetables uncommon in Montana, along with his grains and other rotation crops.

Bob was born in Atlanta in 1947 and by the next year his family had moved back to Big Sandy, where he was raised, to take over the family farm.

He graduated from Big Sandy High School, after which he earned a bachelor’s degree in botany and a Master of Science in plant pathology from Montana State University, as well as a doctorate in plant biochemistry from University of California, Davis.

He is involved with many areas of agricultural research from the anti-inflammatory properties of ancient wheat to best practices for organic farming to growing dry land and saline seeptolerant vegetables.

Chamber Gift Certificates vSupports Chamber members vAnd keeps $$$ in Havre supporting our businesses Chamber programs kept close to ½ mIllion $$$ in Havre in 2016.

The Chamber’s Gift Certificate and Christmas Cash Programs encourages shopping within the local business community. Local businesses are the largest contributors to local nonprofit organizations, schools, hospitals and community events. Most of the community programs and activities would not be possible without the generous support and dollars donated each year by local businesses and their employees. Local businesses create the multitude of jobs that our neighbors and friends depend on to sustain their quality of life.

Thank You Thank-you to the businesses that participate in the Chamber’s Gift Certificate program and a big thank-you to the community for supporting the program in 2016. From that first year’s sales 32 years ago of $17,000 to today with $331,500.

Impact of both programs If the $458,400 is turned a conservative 3 times, that becomes over a million dollar economic impact on Havre’s economy. The Board of Directors and participating Chamber member businesses believe the program plays a definite economic roll in our community and take great pride in the positive impact the Chamber Gift Certificate Program has on local business.

Chamber Christmas Cash Christmas Cash continues to make a positive economic impact during the holiday season. $7 million has stayed in Havre since the Christmas Cash program was organized in 1990 by a group of business leaders looking at a way to energize local shopping during the holidays.
