Community Education Spring 2016
Superintendent’s Message… For the first time since the 2010-2011 school year we are running a general fund levy election. There are also two Havre Trustee positions that will be decided upon by voters in our community. It is always encouraging to have folks willing to serve in this capacity and I am thankful for the individuals that have stepped forward to give of their time and talents to help guide Havre Public Schools Policy and decision making. School Trustees face many challenges, make difficult decisions and give countless hours of volunteered time that often goes unnoticed. It is not a position that brings accolades and notoriety but definitely one that can interrupt regular sleep patterns. School board members often go unnoticed throughout a majority of their time served right up until there is a controversial matter put before them or the school district encounters financial issues. The role of an individual school board member is often misunderstood by the general public and it can be challenging to operate in an open forum capacity. Every word and decision they make has their name attached to it for all to critique and second guess. Making decisions based upon the whole versus the individual can at times put trustees in direct opposition to the very community members they voluntarily serve. It can become a burdensome task working diligently throughout the year trying to provide the best possible learning environment for students that the board can with the resources afforded to them. I have experienced these moments first hand and watched good people deal with some very difficult circumstances. Along with the students that say farewell to Havre High School this spring, we have a list of retirees that also embark on their next journey. It has always been a mixture of emotions for me, as I listen to dedicated professionals share words of wisdom gleaned from years of interaction with students. Sitting in this chair these moments become even more profound as one considers the difficulty of replacing those individuals. These days are great reminders to me just how significant the work that is performed every day at each of our school buildings and our facilities. It also makes me feel so grateful for the returning staff, knowing that they will carry on the “Tradition of Excellence” that has been fostered in Havre Public Schools. If there are any service groups or organizations that would like to hear about what is happening in Havre Public Schools, I would greatly welcome the opportunity to share our story. Please contact me at the Robins Administration Building 395-8550 to set up a time and place. Remember to ask a child how they feel about school. It is a great way to start a meaningful conversation about their education.
