Terra Vogel
Havre Public School's Teacher of the Year
2019
Each year Havre Public School employees have the privilege and the challenge of nominating one of their own to receive the Teacher of the Year Award. Many outstanding individuals are nominated each year and this year’s list included Erika Brekhus, Havre High School, Rachel Haug, Havre High School, Lindsey Ratliff, Havre High School, Danielle Parsons, Havre Middle School and Terra Vogel, Havre Middle School. During the Employee Recognition Celebration in August of 2019, Mandy Nitz, Teacher of the Year 2018, presented Terra Vogel as the 2019 Teacher of the Year. A common theme of her nomination letters is her ability to understand each of her student’s abilities and she spends hours creating lessons with welldefined goals and objectives for each student. She strongly believes in parent involvement and understands the power that parents can have in assisting to develop meaningful and relevant goals for all students. Terra graduated from Big Sandy High School and obtained her Elementary and Special Education degree at Carroll College in Helena. She began her college career in a public relations degree and had the opportunity to volunteer at a local elementary school. While volunteering, she was asked what her major was, to which the supervising teacher responded, “Oh, that’s too bad. You would’ve made a wonderful teacher.” That comment sent her on a new career path. She has been teaching for 22 years with 11 years being at Box Elder Public Schools. She started teaching students at Havre Middle School in 2008 as a Special Education Teacher. Mrs. Vogel has been noted as an invaluable asset to our district serving as a mentor for several teachers and working closely with other members in the special education program district wide to better serve our students. Students are the best part of her job and Mrs. Vogel is invested in the person each student is and takes joy in watching these young people learn and grow. The most bittersweet encounter for her is watching the 8th graders move on to the next level of their learning and she feels honored to have been part of their lives. She loves the day to day interaction with each student and is sad for it to end. With that being said, the best reward is seeing the kids return as high school students and young adults and she looks forward to catching up on their lives. Mrs. Vogel is married to Max Vogel of the US Bank Credit Department and they have a solid partnership built on 22 years of marriage. Within those 22 years, they had 2 beautiful daughters, Alara and Carsyn Vogel. Alara is pursuing a Doctorate in Pharmacy at the University of Montana in Missoula with Carsyn being a senior at Havre High. They have had the privilege of having both children attend Havre Schools throughout their entire academic careers. They are very family-orientated and do many things together as a family. “This experience has been so humbling. I know I am surrounded throughout this district by educators that go above and beyond expectations for all students each and every day. The opportunity to collaborate with these educators, has enhanced who I am as a person and teacher. For that, I am indebted to them all.” –Terra Vogel
