Mandy Nitz

Havre Public School's Teacher of the Year 2018 Each year Havre Public School employees have the privilege and the challenge of nominating one of their own to receive the Teacher of the Year Award. Many outstanding individuals are nominated each year and this year’s list included Mandy Nitz, Havre High School, Stephanie McLain, Havre Middle School, and Victoria Proctor, Havre High School. During the Employee Recognition Celebration in May of 2018, Heather Haney, Teacher of the Year 2017, presented Mandy Nitz as the 2018 Teacher of the Year. As Heather Haney, introduced Mandy Nitz as this year’s Teacher of the Year, she asked a rhetorical question, “What makes a great teacher? Is it thoughtfulness and compassion, a kind heart and loving nature, enthusiasm, organization, a wealth of knowledge, having engaging and effective lessons, setting high expectations for students, or building relationship with students?” Mrs. Haney goes on to share that Mrs. Nitz possesses these fine qualities as well as an abundance of other fine qualities. “Not only is she kind and compassionate towards her students but she also shows the same compassion and kindness to her colleagues. She builds great relationships with her students, expects greatness from each and every one, and she is always mixing up her lessons so as to keep the students engaged.” Her nomination letter states that she is a coach, mentor, counselor and friend to all and that she holds herself to a higher standard and holds herself accountable to her students, to her community, and to her district. Mandy graduated high school from Big Sandy High School and attended Concordia College and MSU-Northern and received degrees in both English and Biology Education. Having watched her mom teach English in High School that made sense to students and those students loved her for it, influenced Mandy’s decision to be a teacher. “I wanted to be just like her,” states Nitz. Mrs. Mandy Nitz has worked in the teaching profession for 18 years and currently teaches high school English, College and Career Reading, and Education 101 Dual Credit for students who are interested in education as a career. She has also taught at KG High School, North Star High School and at Havre Middle School. Married to Jeremiah Nitz, who is also in the education field and is the Havre Middle School Vice Principal and Activities Director, keeps her spare time filled with sports activities while being a mom to Noah and Aiden. She is also active with the worship team, women’s ministry and vacation bible school as well as assists with women’s retreats at her church. Her students are her favorite part of the job because they are smart, resilient, funny, and amazing. She loves spending her days with them and feels blessed to be a teacher. She can be seen before and after school working with students who describe her as approachable, understanding and kind but firm. Welcome back to school staff and students and congratulation Mrs. Mandy Nitz on being Teacher of the Year 2018 for Havre Public Schools.

Thanks for your continued dedication to Havre Public Schools Mandy Nitz!

Superintendent's Superintendent's Message… Message... I want to personally thank VMWare, Team4Tech and CoSN for selecng Havre as a Good Gigs Trek desnaon. As a precursor to the arrival of the Good Gigs Trek team, in early August, Havre Public Schools received a technology hardware package from VMware/Dell valued at $95,432.73 donated to the Havre Public Schools Educaon Foundaon. In no way do I want to minimize this gi, as the impact it will have from both a fiscal and technology perspecve, is beyond appreciated. This number does not come close to the final fiscal gi that Havre Public Schools received as a result of parcipang in this project. In the end, it was the me spent with the amazingly talented and fantasc individuals that arrived in Havre on Thursday August 9, that quite honestly is immeasurable. It is hard to express the appreciaon that I have for the Good Gigs Trek team and the talent that was so generously shared with our school district. Admiedly, I was somewhat skepcal and apprehensive about hosng the Good Gigs Trek team for 9 consecuve days. It seemed somewhat overwhelming to consider how 15 people from six different countries would react to Havre, Montana and our school district. My concern dissipated rapidly as it became readily apparent these individuals were here to immerse themselves in our school and our community. They were not here to save us, correct us or demonstrate all that they knew, but rather to share and fully engage with our staff, children and community. I was able to glean enough informaon as to how the team members were selected from over 23,000 VMware employees to understand that the process for selecng the trekkers was quite purposeful. I do not fully understand the enrety of the process, at the same me, I would suggest that the visit to our school district should be more than enough evidence that it works. It was amazing to watch these individuals funcon as a team. Each of them so talented and uniquely gied, yet so willing to share their gis for the overall goal of the project. It was collaborave learning modeled at the highest funconing level I have ever witnessed. I firmly believe that technology can be an equalizer for rural school districts and communies such as Havre. In spite of the geographic barriers our students face we can connect and access knowledge that without technology would otherwise be beyond our grasp. The Good Gigs Trek if nothing else impressed upon me in an even greater way that technology is an instrument that should enhance our educaonal experience and learning journey. It is a means. It is a path. Ulmately, it is the relaonships and personal interacon that makes learning meaningful and lasng. This amazing group of people consistently demonstrated this truth in every interacon they had with our staff, students, and community. There are so many moments that I would love to share to support the great work that occurred over these nine days. For me it was especially grafying to watch students, parents and staff enjoy the Tech Fun Day hosted at Havre High School on Saturday August 11. There were no grades given. There were no formal assessments. It was learning for learning’s sake. There was so much from that day that made me so proud to be a part of the Havre community and so grateful for having the opportunity to have this me with the individuals that I had only met for the first me two days earlier. That day really impressed upon me how special this me, with these folks, would be for Havre Public Schools. Andrew P. Carlson Superintendent Havre Public Schools’ Community Educaon is proud to offer many excing classes for the 2018 Fall Session. Registraon begins September 24th. Register on-line, by email or in person. Payment is due at me of registraon. Students will be dropped from classes if payment is not received within one week of registering for classes.
