Superintendent's Message... Superintendent’s Message... This fall we are bringing two building bonds before voters. I am hosting two community meetings to discuss the bond requests and would like to encourage you to attend the second evening if you were unable to join us on September 9. The second of the two meetings is listed in our Community Education flyer and is scheduled for 6:30 PM on Monday September 23. On the evening of September 9 we started at Sunnyside Elementary for a tour of that facility and then headed to the high school at 7:15 PM for a tour of that facility. On September 23 we will reverse the order and begin our tour at the high school. During the community meeting I will be taking questions and providing details on both of the proposed bonds. I would appreciate the opportunity to come and visit with your community group or organization about the building bonds or share what is happening in Havre Public Schools. If you would like to schedule a time please contact me at 265-4356.

Every year about this time I like to start singing, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year”, much to the chagrin of my wife and two children and anyone that isn’t tone deaf. I know the song has nothing to do with the start of the school year, but for me it is absolutely one of my favorite moments throughout the year. It is such a good feeling to see the school buildings fill back up with students and be a part of the energy they bring with them. I was extremely proud of our staff as I visited our buildings on the first day of school. Havre Public Schools’ “Tradition of Excellence” was evident throughout our district beginning on day one. The 2013-2014 school year holds so much promise and I feel so fortunate to be a part of this great district. Elementary District Building Bond Sunnyside

Scott Filius Teacher of the Year 2013
In April, Karen Nave, who was named Teacher of the Year 2012, had the pleasure of introducing Havre Public Schools’ 2013 Teacher of the Year. Three outstanding educators were nominated for this award; Ms. Jacki Kannberg (Havre Middle School Social Studies Teacher), Ms. Vicky Michaels (Sunnyside Fourth Grade Teacher) and Mr. Scott Filius (Havre High Social Studies Teacher and Wrestling Coach). Special Education Teacher, Karen Nave, said during her introduction, “Standing up here is a very humble experience, and humble is one of the words I would use to describe this next year’s Teacher of the Year." Ms. Nave was referring to none other than Scott Filius. Nave continued by saying, “Other adjectives that come to mind, as well as the minds of students and peers, are: innovative, passionate, unassuming, positive, leader, kind and disciplined. After many years of teaching, Scott continues to work tirelessly to increase content knowledge. He also advocates for students and their success, sets high expectations for self and his students, and recognizes that a teacher has the power to change lives. While our school district may get excited when one of our sports teams wins a championship, we truly have an education champion in the perScott Filius, 2013 Teacher of the Year son of Mr. Scott Filius.” Scott was nominated by Vicki Proctor (Havre High Business Teacher) for this honor. Quoting from her letter of nomination, “The best way to describe Scott Filius is through his students. This is their lexicon: innovative, eloquent, intelligent, interesting, entertaining, happy all of the time, outgoing, caring, passionate, he is like a father to a big family called his team; he makes me laugh as I learn, nice, organized, disciplined, cool, kind, he would do anything he could do to help a student, and he makes learning simple.” Proctor continued by saying, “Scott ’s peers appreciate his hard work to stay current in his field, his willing desire to help when asked, and his unassuming leadership that remains positive in any situation. He believes in his role as a teacher and a teacher’s ability to change lives and he takes this to heart in any interaction he has with a student. Scott believes in his students and his students ‘feel’ this and then learn to ‘know’ their own talents; they are then able to accept the gift given to them by their teacher, the gift of self-empowerment. Often students do not know how to accept this gift.” With regard to his coaching Proctor added, “While the school district may be excited about a team’s championship trophy, Mr. Filius has his focus grounded in his students. In his coaching talents, he emphasized talented unity, energized progress and the desire of his team to be more than they were the day before. The trophy is the incidental that happens along the way when there is a GREAT teacher in the classroom." Mr. Filius has been employed as a social studies teacher for 21 years. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Montana State Northern, then known as Northern Montana College. Scott taught in Driggs, Idaho from 1992 until 1995 after which he moved to Havre. Havre Public Schools has been fortunate to have Scott employed as a history teacher for the past 17 years. Scott was influenced to become a teacher through his high school coach. He states he chose the area of history, “Because I liked it.” He continued by saying, “I like dealing with the kids.” During his time off Scott enjoys coaching in the offseason, hunting and fishing. Scott is married to Havre Middle School Physical Education Teacher, Kari Filius. Together they have two daughters and one son, Peyton (17), Sadie (9), and Parker (15).
Congratulations Scott Filius Teacher of the Year 2013
