Superintendent's Message...
We hope you had a joyous Holiday Season from the Board of Trustees ... Committed to providing an Outstanding Education to our Students with the Support of our Community!
Sup erintendent’s Message… i
There have been many reasons to celebrate the 2015-2016 school year. We started the year with a very enjoyable ribbon cutting ceremony at Sunnyside Elementary School. The additions are greatly appreciated and have had a profound impact on the education of our students. It has been extremely enjoyable to realize the amount of use the new facility has seen from our community as well. We have hosted everything from a Chamber of Commerce Job Fair to Northern Lights Basketball practice. The Havre Community really should take pride in passing the bond that renovated and added on much needed space to Sunnyside. We also received extremely exciting news that our marching band had been selected to participate in the July 4th Parade in Washington D.C. The Arts continue to thrive in our community and schools. It is a real honor for a school our size to be recognized in this manner. In many schools and communities, Arts have been cut or even eliminated. The Havre High Marching Band continues to excel and I cannot think of a group more deserving of this honor. It will be a great source of community pride hearing the school song played in our Nation’s Capital. Once again our Community Education coordinator, Robyn Lewis, has put together a great list of course offerings for the winter session. I hope you are able to find an offering that draws your interest. We really enjoy providing this opportunity and believe that Community Education is a vital part of our operations. If you or someone you know has a course that might work for our spring offerings, I strongly encourage you to get a hold of Robyn at 265-4356 or stop by the Robins Administration Building. Thank you and as always, Go Blue Ponies!!!

Students MUST be at least 18 years of age to participate in classes. No exceptions! Refunds will be made only if you notify the Community Education office five days prior to class starting or 10 days for classes where the instructor or Community Ed. purchases supplies. Melony Steckel Melony Steckel
Havre Public Schools’ Havre Public School's Classified employee ofof the 2015 employee theYear year 2015 Classified Havre Public Schools’ 2015 Classified Employee of the Year is Melony Steckel. Melony represents the non-teaching employees of the district involving clerical, maintenance, custodial, technology, school food service, paraprofessional, nurse and transportation workers. Along with Mrs. Steckel, three outstanding HPS employees were nominated for this award; Aaron Hanson—Robins—Information Supervisor, Wayne Mowery—Lincoln McKinley Custodian, and Pam Stewart—Lincoln McKinley Paraprofessional. For the past four years, Melony has held the position as the special needs bus route driver for our transportation department. Andrea Keller, HPS employee of the year 2014 had the pleasure of introducing Melony at our HPS annual Pride Ceremony last spring. Andrea has had the privilege to know first-hand what a wonderful employee and co-worker Melony is. Andrea said “She is very dependable and pleasant. She is without a doubt the right person for her job. Special needs buses require special people and Melony has been all we could have hoped for. She has the ability to read the kids and situations and make the right decision. To say the least she has to be flexible because her route can at times change daily. When asked to make a change or come up with a new idea for a route her response is always the same, ‘I can do that.’” Melony is a HHS graduate and continued her education at MSU-Northern. She worked a few jobs around Havre at the El Toro Inn, the City Pool and the Havre Postal Service. At this last position as a letter carrier, she realized that she was working so much and sometimes only having two hours a day with her kids. She decided she wanted to spend more time with her family so in 2010 she started working in the HPS Transportation Department as a bus driver and delivering inter-office mail between individual school buildings. When asked what is the best part of her job, Melony replies “seeing how much the kids change through out the school year, and also just having a job that is fun and not stressful. I love the kids on my bus and my co-workers.” With a great attitude, Melony says “It’s not just driving them place to place. It’s much more than that. I get to interact with them, find out their likes and dislikes and also get to know their families. We really have some memorable moments.” The difficulties in this position that Melony faces are of course our Montana winter roads and any changes in schedule is tough for the kids on her bus. Trying to keep them calm until they stop at their location, but with Melony’s kind smile and calm attitude it definitely helps ease her passengers. One of her most memorable moments at HPS was laying to rest a 30 year old trusty metal anti-freeze can by flattening it like a pancake. The transportation crews expressions as she was trying to explain what happened is something she will never forget. Melony is married to her high school sweetheart Powell Steckel who is a machinist at BNSF. They have two boys, 11 year old Magnus a 6th grader at HMS and 10 year old Zander a 5th grader at Sunnyside. Outside of her job at HPS, Melony loves to fish and go target shooting. She does a lot of power lifting and weight lifting and really likes to swim. She also finds time for painting and enjoys any type of art.
This award is a way of recognizing one of Havre Public Schools’ outstanding employees. Congratulations to Melony Steckel Havre Public Schools’ Classified Employee of the Year 2015
