Area Chamber of Commerce Welcome everyone to our 37th Annual Festival Days weekend! We have some great things in store for you this year and there is literally something for everyone to do this weekend! What makes Havre special to me may be different than what makes Havre special to you. But the one thing that brings us all together is the annual Festival Days Parade. From the joy of watching kids gathering candy and seeing the smiles on people's faces riding on floats as they wave at their friends, to the Havre High marching band showing their pride of Havre and everyone else involved in the parade make this the pinnacle event for our town. Be sure to check out all that our local vendors have to offer at Saturday Market in Town Square before or after the parade. Saturday at 3 p.m. grab a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy Rock Lotto with some of Havre’s finest musicians entertaining you with music from yesterday and today. Saturday night, 6 p.m., there is a dinner and street dance at the Eagle’s Club to top off the evening. For the car lovers out there head downtown Friday night and take in the Steve Heil Memorial Car Show. Saturday is the C u s to m C o l l i s i o n Re p a i rs B u r n o u t Competition and the E-1 Towing Demolition Derby which is always exciting. For all the art enthusiasts, check out the Hi-Line Quilt Guild Festival of Quilts at Bearly Squared Quilting and the Crafts and Commercial Products Show at the Holiday Village Mall. I'm sure that Festival Days has been through many changes, ups and downs, but has perservered to be a fun-filled, actionpacked weekend for all involved. with friends and the special running of the trains at the railroad museum is simply amazing! The Friends of the Library Book Sale always has a great literary treasure to find and the gnome hunt is a great addition to the weekend. For all the active athletes and spectators looking for sporting events, be sure to take in some of the 48-Hour Softball Tournament, the MSU-N college volleyball team playing University of MontanaWestern and the annual Festival days Fun Run/Walk. With these and many other events, there's sure to be something on the Festival Days calendar that will interest you. Highlights: Activities throughout the area throughout the weekend ■ Continued from page 7 Festival Days weekend. An extra runs of the trains will be set up in the basement, which is far more than visitors usually get to see, said Christy Owens of the museum. The railroad museum offers a brief history of the railroad in Havre complete with model railroad trains running daily. An original hand cart and working block signal are on display. There is no charge to visit the railroad museum. And people can stay and see Havre Beneath the Streets. The museum will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday with the run of special trains set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Steve Heil Memorial Car Show The Steve Heil Memorial Car Show returns as a Festival Day’s tradition this year. Car buffs are invited to the parking lot behind Independence Bank Friday at 6 p.m. to either display or view classic and restored vehicles. The car show is named after Steve Heil and organized by Cassie Albertson, Heil’s daughter. She said that her late father was a “car nut.” A car show had for many years been a part of the Festival Days festivities, but was discontinued several years ago. It was resurrected in 2014.

Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast The Kiwanis Club will be hosting their annual pancake feed Saturday 7 a.m to 1 p.m at the Eagles Club in Havre. The feed, which beggan in 1955 and helps fund the group's community projects. It has since become part of the Festival Days Celebration. As in years past. Kiwanians will be at the Eagle’s Club long before daybreak to prepare for the feed.

Custom Collission’s Customer Appreciation Day Custom Collisions Repair will give members of the public a look at its facilities and provide them with a free lunch and show Saturday, Sept. 16, during its annual Appreciation Day. People will be able to walk around the garage as see the tools and equipment used to repair vehicles and look at entries in the car show. The business, 7110 1st St. NW, will be cordoned off to most traffic, except those who take part in Custom Collision Repair’s car show. The show also features a burnout, another part of the reason for having the area blocked off. Participants will have space to smoke their tires for the crowd. Custom Collision will also announce the winners of rebuilt cars, a tradition it has started and this year upped to having two cars given away.

Off-roading comes to Festival Days Off road enthusiasts have a chance during Havre Festival Days to ride on a 4x4 trail event just outside of Havre. Montana State University-Northern automotive technology teacher Kevin Holzworth said that last fall a group he is with held an off road trail event at the Fresno off-

highway vehicle park, or OHV, 20 miles north of Havre off of Wildhorse Road, and had such a good time they are doing it again. The event starts with people meeting at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at Northern’s Auto Shop at 932 First Street. Participants will travel to Fresno OHV to use the site, which is “home to 120 acres of off-road trail riding,” Holzworth said. All off-road vehicles are allowed to use the park and has a “ride at your own risk” policy.

Magera holds talk on local names during Festival Days Local historian Jim Magera will round out the H. Earl Clack Museum’s “Summer Speaker Series” during Festival Days Friday at 7 p.m. His presentation, “The Stories behind Havre — Bear Paw Names,” will be in the Montana Room at Havre Inn and Suites. Magera will talk about local name origins. The event is free and open to the public and an interesting evening is guaranteed. Light refreshments will be served.

Gnomes coming home to the library Friday Havre Daily News staff The Havre-Hill County Library is wrapping up its second annual Gnome Hunt during Festival Days. Gnomes have been hiding in various locations around Havre in Adopt-A-Gnome locations, Gary & Leo’s Fresh Foods,

Vic’s Place, Holiday Village Mall, Finest Boot Repair, Independence Bank, Bear Paw Technologies, Bear Paw Credit Union and The Yoga Shop, as well as some roaming gnomes hiding in other locations. The library has been putting out hints on locations on its Facebook page, and

people who find gnomes take a selfie with the gnome and mark the location on a bingo card. Every bingo earned by finding gnomes acts as an entry in a raffle held during the Gnome Homecoming Party at the library at 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 15. Finding all the

gnomes earns 12 entries in the raffle.

People need to turn in their bingo cards

to the library by Thursday and the library says everyone should join its staff and the gnomes at the Gnome Homecoming Party Friday at the library at 3 p.m.

Festival of crafts, art and commercial products

Grand Marshal to lead parade during weekend of excitement Tim Leeds tleeds@havredailynews.com The new executive director of the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce said planning for the first Festival Days she is overseeing is going well, with some new events and tweaking of others including on the parade Saturda. Jody Olson, who took over in June as Debbie Vandeberg retired after more than two decades as Chamber director, said she is having a grand marshal to lead the parade and is inviting people from surrounding communities including Rocky Boy’s and Fort Belknap Indian reservations and Chinook, which is not holding its Sugarbeet Festival this year, to come join the parade in Havre. She said said Havre’s Mrs. Montana Tana Johnson will lead the parade, in a car driven by her husband, Brian, down Fifth Avenue as the grand marshal of the parade. Olson said people who want to participate in the parade can sign up at the Chamber office at 130 Fifth Ave. right through the day before the parade. The festival has its regular favorites including the Kiwanis Club pancake feed, the 48-hour softball tournament, a run of s p e c i a l t ra i n s a t t h e Fra n k D e Ro s a Railroad Museum, the Friends of the

Havre-Hill County Library book sale held in conjunction with the festival, the annua l f u n r u n a n d wa l k a t t h e Re m o t e Controlled Model Flying Club south of town, the quilt show, the Steve Heil M e m o r i a l C a r S h ow, t h e E - 1 Tow i n g Demolition Derby and the Commercial and Craft Show and the annual drawing for the North Central Montana Shrine Club beef raffle, and it also has a couple of new events and some coming back for the second or third year. That includes the KNMC Rock Lotto, now in its second year; a 4x4 off road event north of Havre at the Fresno offhighway vehicle park; a burger feed and bingo night held by the Eagles Auxiliary outside of Havre’s Eagles Club Friday night and a barbecue and street dance outside the Eagles Saturday night sponsored by Havre’s Xi Tau chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi international women’s o rg a n i z a t i o n ; t h e H av re - H i l l C o u n t y Library capping off its annual Gnone Hunt with a homecoming party for the gnomes Friday, and a special presentation by local historian and retired teacher Jim Magera Friday about how local names came to be. E1 Towing Demolition Derby will take place Saturday at 3 p.m. George Ferguson Havre Daily News

There's just something unique and special about Havre's annual Festival Days Celebration. It's a time for the entire community to come together in many different ways. And sports is a big part of the Festival Days tradition. This year, football won't be a part of the show, as both the Havre Blue Ponies and Montana State University-Northern Lights will be playing games away from Havre over the weekend. But, there is still plenty of sports to see and do during the 2017 Festival Days celebration. Of course, a big tradition during Festival Days is the annual 48 Hours of Softball Tournament. The event, held continiously from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field, brings in teams from all over Montana, and sometimes Canada. It is a co-ed tournament, and always features many teams from Havre and surrounding areas. And, the big draw is, the tournament round-the-clock. Festival Days weekend also marks the home debut of the MSU-Northern volleyball team. The Skylights begin Frontier Conference play Saturday Sept. 16 with a match against UM-Western at 2 p.m. inside the Armory Gymnasium. Festival Days will also feature the annual E1 Towing Demolition Derby, which is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. and the Festival Run/Walk, sponsored by the RC Model Flying Club, which gets underway at noon Sunday.

South Alberta Pipe and Drum Band returning to Havre Festival Days A favorite musical visitor to Havre for most of the last seven decades is once again returning to Havre Festival Days. The South Alberta Pipes and Drums is a favorite in the Festival Days Parade and as they travel around town playing and visiting with festival goers. The Medicine Hat Pipe Band was established in Medicine Hat in 1912 and Alex Hosie, who haled from Forfar, Scotland, was appointed Pipe Major. Many of the band members enlisted during World War I and did not return, but the band was reconstituted after the war. The band became affiliated with the Canadian Legion of Medicine Hat in 1928, and was called “The Canadian Legion Pipe Band of Medicine Hat”.

A highlight of this period was playing for the King and Queen on their Royal Tour of Canada in 1939. Band members again enlisted for service in World War II. The Medicine Hat branch of the Royal Canadian Legion continued to sponsor a pipe band in the post war period under Pipe Major Alex Hosie. It was during this time that the band started to attend the music festivals hosted in Havre — which disbanded in the 1960s and which inspired Festival Days. In about 1958, Alex Hosie retired as the Pipe Major after 46 years and Bill Cowan, a native Fife, Scotland, became Pipe Major of the Medicine Hat Royal Canadian Legion Pipe Band. The band became known as the South Alberta Pipe Band in 1966 and

Bill Cowan continued as Pipe Major until 1978. The position was taken over by Eric Kean in 1981 and he continues to lead the band today (over 35 years). During the late 1970’s and 1980’s, the band became very much of a family affair, with many pipers and drummers being children of adult band members. About 1980, the band switched to the current style of uniform with balmorals, Argyll jackets, plain leather sporrans but continued with the MacDuff tartan. For the past 15 years, the band has been known as the South Alberta Pipes and Drums.The band plays throughout southern Alberta and northern Montana and is a regular performer during Havre Festival Days.

Rock Lotto returns to Festival Days Havre Daily News staff After a successful trial gig at last year’s Fe s t i v a l D a y s, t h e M o n t a n a S t a t e University-Northern radio station is again mixing and matching some singers and musicians to entertain people during Festival Days. K N M C ’s Ro c k Lo t to i s s e t to r u n Saturday in Town Square from 3 p.m to 8 p.m. In the event, musicians and singers put their name in the bag and the organizers randomly draw them out to create bands. The newly formed bands — which were put together Aug. 9 — are given a list of songs and have about five weeks to put together, and then perform, a 20-minute set. Organizer Dave Martens said that, this year, 30 people of all ranges of musical experience put their names in, creating six bands to perform Saturday. Martens said he and co-organizer Rick Linie put together a list of songs from the decade anniversary years, ’57, ’67, ’77, ’87, ’97 and 2007, from which the bands randomly drew one song from each year. The band then picked the five songs of the six they wanted to perform. Martens said having the different years for music keeps the lotto a bit more challenging and gives the musicians a greater variety of music to explore.

Only one band had turned in its official name — “The Holiday Village People” — by printing deadline. Saturday, Vic’s Club will provide a cash bar and the Havre Lions Club will be selling their “world-famous Pronto Pups and cheese fries,” Martens said. Sponsors include Triangle Mobile, which is providing porta-potties, Custom Collision Repair, which is providing sound, and Rustinky, which provided posters and design work. The event is free and all ages are welcome, Martens said.

Shriners Beef Raffle People can help donate to the children served by Shriners Hospitals and take a chance at a winter’s supply of beef. Havre Shriners will be around town selling the raffle tickets that have become a Festival Days tradition. The beef is donated by a local producer and will be wrapped and ready for the winners to take home to the freezer. First-place winner gets half of a beef, with second-place getting the hind quarter and third-place the front quarter. The winner will be drawn at Saturday’s Demolition Derby. Shriners Hospitals provide free treatment to children with a variety of illnesses and injuries. The hospitals are located around the country, but most local people t a k e a d v a n t a g e o f t h e S p o k a n e, Washington, hospital. Money from the raffle goes into a travel fund to help families get to any Shriners Hospital.

The annual 48-hour Softball Tournament will officially begin Friday at 6:30 p.m with co-ed teams from the region playing in the tournament, which will be happening at Sixth Avenue Memorial Field. The tourney will be played, almost uninterrupted, until Sunday at 6 p.m.

Friends of the Library Book Sale Though Festival Days runs Friday through Sunday, the Friends of the Library Book Sale starts Thursday to give book lovers an extra day to take advantage of great deals on coveted reading materials. The used-book sale is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Friends of the Havre-Hill County Library, which support a wide variety of projects for the library throughout the year. People donate books for the sale and some unneeded or duplicated books from the library shelves are put in the sale, too. The event will also include a silent auction that ends Sunday. The selection of themed auction baskets is dependent on

Hi-Line Quilt Guild Festival of Quilts Show what treasures they find donated. Over the four days, thousands of books will change hands. In fact, new books are put out on the tables regularly throughout each day as book sales create room on the tables. The money raised helps the library pay for the license for its movie program, for the summer and winter reading programs, and prizes for children programs.

The auxiliary will hold a burger feed and bingo night Friday outside of the Eagles Club from 5:30 to 10 p.m.

E-1 Demo Derby back in Festival Days The E-1 Towing Demolition Derby is again returning to Havre Festival Days. The derby is set to start Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Great Northern Fairgrounds at 3 p.m. Derbyers from throughout the region will be competing in the heats to get to the final rounds and win the derby.

The 2017 Quilt Guild Festival of Quilts Show will display large and small quilts at at Bearly Square Quilting Sept. 15-17. The show will be open noon to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. People will be able to view anywhere between 20 and 30 quilts that will be on display. The quilts on display have been handmade by quilters from all across the Hi-Line and in the surrounding areas. The quilt raffle is one of the highlights of the show. There will be three raffles. One raffle will be for a large quilt, and the mini raf-

fle will be for a variety of handmade crafts. People will also be able to buy tickets for a chance to win a sewing machine. Tickets will be $3, or two for $5, and they must be purchased separately for each raffle. The drawing will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. The proceeds from the donation quilt will go to Feed My Soup Soup Kitchen and

those from the mini raffle and the sewing machine will go to the Quilt Guild.

Saturday Market The Havre Festival Days activities include the final weekend of a summerlong event on Town Square — Saturday Market. The event started in 2002 after the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce’s completion of the Square. Every Saturday from early July through Festival Days, vendors gather on the Square to sell farm and garden goods, baked goods and other food, artwork and crafted items. The market has grown each year, with an average of 40 vendors every weekend. The market runs from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday during Festival Days.

Beta Sigma Phi brings street dance to Festival Days A local chapter of an international women’s organization is holding an entertaining event during Havre Festival Days to help it fund helping local people. Havre’s Xi Tau chapter of Beta Sigma

Phi, an organization formed more than 80 years ago, is having a dinner, raffle and street dance Saturday outside the Havre Eagles Club from 6 p.m. to midnight. Local band Plowed under is playing at the dance and donations including items from Valley Furniture will be raffled off. The dinner and dance is in addition to the annual craft auction the chapter holds each November to help it provide help to people down on their luck. Each Christmas season, the Xi Tau chapter buys Christmas gifts for some families in the area, and also purchases presents for residents at the care center who have no family, Its work extends beyond the holiday season, helping displaced victims of domestic violence with household and toiletry items and so on, and aid like helping people who are low on funds travel to see someone who is in the hospital or travel to see family when someone has died, providing them with a gas card.
