Area Chamber of Commerce Roots and Branches … We Need Each Other is the slogan for Festival Days weekend this year. For 38 years, this weekend has been a celebration of the end of summer and a time for people from around the area to get together and remember what makes this area so great. This year isn’t any different. The old standby events will make the weekend uniquely Havre's such as the 48-hour Softball Tournament, the p a r a d e, t h e K i w a n i s P a n c a k e Breakfast and many others. Many newer events are scheduled this year, too, such as the Professional Ag Students Golf Scramble, Furry Friends Paw Parade and the vendor booths downtown. Of course, the events listed above only scratch the surface of what is going on in Havre during Festival Days. I recommend that you put on your

Welcome to Havre for the 38th celebration of Havre Festival Days We are all looking forward to Festival Days this year. Fall is the perfect way to ease into winter and leave the heat and fires and smoke behind us! Festival Days means many things to different people which is why the theme “Roots and Branches … We Need Each Other” is so appropriate. It can mean different generations need each other. It can mean as we grow, we need to consider our roots but branch out. It can mean to someone that has moved away, that their roots are always in Havre, too. Get out and enjoy our town over the Festival Days weekend and take part in all the traditional events and try out some new activities, too. You may want to use your prowess at the obstacle course, tour the Boys & Girls Club, shoot in the golf scramble, sight in your gun, parade your pet, dunk a friend, watch a movie, vote for the “Best Of” or shoot moonlight trap. There is fun for all ages and all interests. Please look at the full schedule of events posted around town or on the Chamber website. South Alberta Pipe and Drum Band again in Havre Festival Days A favorite feature of the Havre Festival Days parade is once again returning with some help from the Havre Lions Club. The club is helping sponsor a trip from Medicine Hat, Alberta, to Havre of the South Alberta Pipe and Drum Band, a group that has been a popular part of Festival Days since it started in 1981. The traditional pipe and drum band marches in the parade and also performs at locations throughout Havre afterward. The official origin of the band, a featured part of the Festival Parade and other parts of the event, dates back to the same year Hill and Blaine counties were carved out of Chouteau County, 1912. The traditional pipe and drum band, based out of Medicine Hat, has marched in every Havre Festival Days, but its participation in Havre festivals goes back at least three decades before that. The band itself has roots in the parts of Canada north of Montana going back much more than a century. Pipers were employed by the Hudson Bay Company and one of the most famous, Colin Frasier, accompanied George Simpson of the company in his travels across Canada to the Pacific. Frasier finished his piping for Hudson Bay at Fort Chipewyan in the northeastern part of what became Alberta. Other pipers were known to have been in the Medicine Hat region long before the precursor to the band — a group apparently known as the Medicine Hat Kiltie Band — started playing in 1909. A regiment of soldiers from Nova Scotia was stationed in Medicine Hat during the Riel Rebellion of 1884-85, the web page with the band’s history recounts, and could easily have included pipers. Highland regiments with pipers were quite popular, and both British and Canadian armies had a number of such regiments, the site says. Pipe regiments historically were common in Scotland, while the British army traditionally had drummers. The British began adding pipers in an attempt to draw Scotsmen to the military. The earliest piper known by name in the Medicine Hat area was James H. Wilson, who farmed in Saskatchewan near Walsh. According to the web page, he stopped piping when his wife became sick of that music and threw his pipes in the wood stove. Another early piper who played in the area was Elkwater coal mine operator “Happy” Jack Hart. The official start of the South Alberta Pipe and Drum Band is listed as 1912, with the establishment of the Medicine Hat Pipe Band. The band joined the military for service during World War I, and only one, Scotsman Alex Hosie, who had been recruited to Medicine Hat for the pipe band, returned to the community. Hosie, a champion piper who also judged competitions in Banff and Seattle, kept the band going, and it became affiliated with the Canadian Legion of Medicine Hat in 1928, taking the new name The Canadian Legion Pipe Band of Medicine Hat. In 1966, most members of the Legion band left it to form the South Alberta Pipe Band.

Havre Lions Club is helping sponsor the band to return to Havre for Festival Days, the trip it has made since the celebration started. The traditional band typically serenades people at businesses and taverns throughout Havre outside of marching in the parade. The band itself dwindled in the 1990s, and stopped doing full performances, although members still played at events. The band was revitalized shortly after 2000. With new members joining, public performances again began in 2003. Along with parades and performances, the band also operates a school to teach the art of pipe and drum band playing. And the band’s history with Havre goes back more than half-a-century. The pipe band has performed and marched in Havre since the 1950s — likely in the precursor to Festival Days, the Havre Band Festival that ran from 1931 until it was discontinued in the late 1960s or early 1970s — and has been associated with Festival Days since it was started in 1981, including as a revival of the band festival. Members of the pipe and drum band have said their stop in Havre is one of their favorite times, citing the friendliness and welcome extended by the city’s residents and the people at the festival. The band members also generally move throughout downtown Havre throughout the festival, visiting with and entertaining people in the business community and at the Havre bars. The Havre performance is considered a punctuation mark in the South Alberta Pipe

and Drum Band season, its last major performance for the summer. Festival Days often starts a break before the band’s work during

Remembrance Day, Nov. 11, considered by many to be the most important day of the year for the band.

Events: Off-roading and run/walk both set for Sunday

Beta Sigma Phi holds Festival Days street dance A local chapter of an international women’s organization is holding an entertaining event during Havre Festival Days to help it fund helping local people. Havre’s Xi Tau chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, an organization formed more than 80 years ago, is having a dinner, raffle and street dance Saturday outside the Havre Eagles Club from 6 p.m. to midnight. Local band Plowed Under is playing at the dance, which will include a 50/50 and other raffles. Darcy Azure’s food truck, Eat with Me, will be serving food at the event. No one younger than 21 will be allowed at the dance The dance is in addition to the annual craft auction the chapter holds each November to help it provide assistance to

people down on their luck. Each Christmas season, the Xi Tau chapter buys Christmas gifts for some families in the area and also purchases presents for residents at the care center who have no family. Its work extends beyond the holiday season, helping displaced victims of domestic violence with household and toiletry items and so on, and aid like helping people who are low on funds travel to see someone who is in the hospital or travel to see family when someone has died, providing them with a gas card.

Moonlight trap shoot Havre Trap Club’s Moonlight Shoot will be giving the public a chance Saturday to come out to the trap club to compete, have some fun and win prizes of meat for their freezer. The Moonlight Shoot is $25 for five rounds of trap shooting and $5 for each additional round. In each round, shooters will compete in heats with five shots at clay pigeons to earn top shooter in the round. The winner of each round will get to select their prize: meat brought in from Gary & Leo’s Fresh Foods. Other shooting game formats will test

New shooters are welcome to come for this competition. Club member Emi Sasaki Smith said the competition usually draws local and visiting trap shooters, including some who regularly come from Great Falls. The August Moonlight Shoot didn’t wrap up until after 2 a.m., she added. The Saturday shoot starts at 8 p.m. at Havre Trap Club, east off the south end of Fifth Avenue. Off-roading back at Festival Days Off-road enthusiasts have a chance during Havre Festival Days to ride some trails near Fresno Reservoir again this year. Montana State University-Northern automotive technology teacher Kevin Holzworth said he is again organizing a ride at the Fresno off-highway vehicle park, or OHV, 20 miles north of Havre off of Wildhorse Road. Riders on 4-by-4s and

dirt bikes will spend the early afternoon on the 120-acre site that starts on a plateau and drops down into the Milk River Valley to the reservoir. The event starts with people meeting at 11 a.m. Sunday on Northern’s SUB Drive near the Student Union Building and then caravaning to Fresno OHV to use the site. All off-road vehicles are allowed to use the park, which has a “ride at your own risk” policy.

Festival Run/Walk The annual Festival Days Run/Walk fundraiser is set for Sunday. Registration for the event starts at noon at the RC Model Club, east off the south end of Fifth Avenue. The run/walk starts at 1 p.m., with the one-mile and 5K courses linking up with the Bill Baltrusch Walking Trail. This is a fundraiser for the Havre High School boys cross country team. Cost to compete is $25 with a T-shirt and $10 without, and kids 8 and younger run for free when accompanied by an adult. Prizes will be awarded.

Havre’s annual Festival Days Celebration is a time for the entire community to come together in many different ways. It’s a time when everybody shows off just how proud they are of Havre. Sporting events have always been a big part of the Festival Days tradition, and in 2018 sports will be a big, big part of the fun. This year, Festival Days will collide with Havre High School’s 2018 Homecoming celebration, so there’s plenty of Blue Pony action for everybody. Thursday, the Havre High volleyball team kicks off the fun with a match against Browning, while the Pony spikers will play their official homecoming match Saturday against Cut Bank. Friday will feature the Havre High golf teams hosting the 2018 Central A Divisional Tournament at Prairie Farms Golf Course, and Saturday morning, the HHS cross country teams host the Havre Invitational. But as is always the case with homecoming, the annual game at Blue Pony Stadium is the big attraction, and Friday night the Blue Ponies will host the Glendive Red Devils in the annual homecoming game. MSU-Northern will be a part of the Festival Days hoopla, as well. While the Northern football team is away playing Montana Tech Saturday, the MSU-N volleyball team will host arch rival Carroll College Saturday in the Armory Gymnasium. The Northern rodeo teams will be inside the Great Northern Fairgrounds Bigger Better Barn Friday and Saturday for the annual MSU-Northern Rodeo, which is the only event the team hosts each season. Of course, a big tradition during Festival Days is the annual 48-Hour Softball Tournament. The tournament starts Friday at 6 p.m. and runs nonstop through Sunday evening. As always, the tournament will be played at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field, and it brings in teams from all over Montana, and sometimes Canada. It is a co-ed tournament, and always features many

teams from Havre and surrounding areas. And, the big draw is, the tournament roundthe-clock. Festival Days will also feature the Festival Run/Walk, which gets underway at 1 p.m. Sunday, starting at the RC Model Flying Club.

This year’s Festival Days parade will include the Furry Friends Paw Parade which will run in conjunction with the regular — and popular — parade Saturday, but entries need to be in before parade day. Festival Days used to have a pet and doll parade that was shorter, for kids to walk, complete with its own prizes and awards, Paw Parade organizer Shannon Heggem said, and people wanted something like this back. This new, re-imagined version of that parade will feature pets and, along with children, will include adults and pet-focused businesses. “We just wanted to give local pet owners a place to showcase their beloved pets,” Heggem said. People can lead their pets on a leash, carry them, pull them in a wagon or on a float, and they can dress them in a cos-

tume or just bring them as their everyday self. The only requirements are that the pets be polite in public and stay under the control of their humans at all times, Heggem said. Any entries that can only make a short distance can leave the parade at Sixth Street, by Dairy Queen, she added. The Furry Friends Paw Parade will gather at the Havre High School parking lot, around the Luxury Unleashed float, at 9 a.m. for judging, with prizes awarded for Most Unique/Cutest Pet, Best Pet Costume and Best Children’s Entry. Entrants must fill out and turn in by Friday the standard parade entry form found at the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce, on the Chamber website http://www.havrechamber.com/ or on the Furry Friends Paw Parade Facebook page.

Historic preservation ornaments featuring Burnham School on sale during Festival Days Havre/Hill County Historic Preservation Commission is again unveiling its annual commemorative Christmas ornaments during Festival Days week.

The ornament this year features the historic Burnham School between Kremlin and Havre. The ornaments are available at the

Havre Area Chamber of Commerce office at 130 Fifth Ave. for $20 each. Ornaments from previous years' collections will be on sale, also, at a discounted

price. Proceeds from the sales go to fund the commission’s preservation of historic sites in the area.

Events: Saturday piled with events and activities right after the parade. People will be able to walk around the garage to see the tools and equipment used to repair vehicles, view the upgrades since last year and look at entries in the car show. The area around the business will be cordoned off to traffic, except for those who are taking part in the car show, which will also feature burnouts. All are welcome to participate in the burnout although they will have to talk to Chris Preputin, owner of Custom Collision, at the event. Custom Collision will also announce the winners of the giveaway event, in which three rebuilt vehicles will be given to people in need of a vehicle. This has become an annual event for the community with this being the fourth year Custom Collision has been doing it. Burgers, pulled pork sandwiches and hot dogs for all ages will be catered by Fat Billy and the Boyz BBQ owner Bill Patera.

Free Disney movie for the kids

Montana State University-Northern radio station KNMC will have its Third Annual Rock Lotto, mixing together singers and musicians to play together from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday in Town Square. Musicians and singers names were put into a bag — people were encouraged to put instrument preference and a secondary — in addition to the songs that they would be playing. This year there were 35 participant names and out of that seven bands were made. The new bands were given six weeks to learn their songs and perform a 20-minute set in Town Square. Organizer Dave Martens said these are 35 very brave people because they did not know the skill level or who the people were they would be playing with for the event. The event has seen people come back to participate in the lotto every year, Martens

Families will have a chance to catch a free Disney movie Saturday. “Planes 2: Fire & Rescue” will be playing at a host hangar at Havre City-County Airport. The movie and affordably priced concessions are sponsored by local pilots in the North Central Hangar of the Montana Pilots’ Association. Hangar President Willie Hurd said the club members just want to share their enthusiasm for airplanes with the public. The movie is free and the concessions are inexpensive, he added, so everyone can have the full movie and treat experience. “Planes 2” will start at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, and signs at the airport will lead the

Montana State University-Northern’s Office of Diversity Awareness and Multicultural Programs is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and cultural awareness during Festival Days with a special art display. Work of the renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is on display this week in Northern’s Vande Bogart Library. Kahlo’s art has transcended cultures and countries and today is one of the most recognized names in the international art world scene. The display is available during library hours Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. Friday.

The Havre Festival Days parade is continuing its decades-old tradition of celebrating the region, with a few new changes and a few recent changes continued. This is the second year the parade has had a grand marshal, with local historian and retired Havre High School history teacher Jim Magera leading the procession. This year will also feature a Furry Friends Paw Parade, which is a returnwith-a-twist of the former pet and doll parade. The Festival Days parade starts Saturday at 10 a.m., with the float judging preceding the parade, and runs from Havre High School down Bullhook Road and proceeds north on Fifth Avenue. In previous years, the parade turned east at Fourth Street, but this year it will continue in a loop through downtown. The

Festival of crafts, art and commercial

products Artisans, crafters and commercial vendors will be downtown, on Third Avenue between Second and Fourth streets, Saturday and the Holiday Village Mall Saturday and Sunday, the weekend of the Havre Festival Days, for the Commercial Products and Craft Show. The craft shows will begin Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at both locations, and

noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the mall. Montanans from Havre, Chinook, Great Falls, Kalispell, Conrad, Moore, Libby, Rudyard and Belt will showcase handmade crafts of many kinds, including jewelry, artwork and paintings, holiday decorations, wood carvings, yard arts, metal art, table runners, napkins, and much more. More than 30 vendors are scheduled to be at the mall and more than 20 in the downtown location. Food will be on sale as well. This will be the first year that the craft show will be downtown.

People again have the chance to pick up some reading material in an event held in conjunction with Festival Days. The Friends of the Havre-Hill County Library this year are holding their annual book sale from Wednesday through Sunday. The sale runs from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The book sale is one of the largest fundraisers held by Friends. Donated books and books retired from the library shelves are sold, with volunteers regularly bringing out more selections through the sale. The money raised helps fund a variety of events at the library, including helping pay for the license for its movie program, for the summer and winter reading programs and prizes for children programs.

Run of the Special Trains

The Frank DeRosa Railroad Museum

and Havre Beneath the Streets will end the summer season with their annual special display of model trains Festival Days weekend. An extra runs of the trains will be set up in the museum basement, giving visitors access to the large diorama-like layout that depicts a scene created by the local model railroad club and reminiscent of the local area in historic times. The railroad museum offers a brief history of the railroad in Havre complete with to-scale model trains running daily. An original hand cart and working block signal are on display. Visits to the railroad museum are free. During the special run of model trains, someone will be available to speak with visitors and answer questions about the trains and the railroad tradition in the Havre area. The trains will run 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and the museum will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Festival of Quilts Hi-Line Quilt Guild’s Festival of Quilts will have a wealth of quilts on display the full weekend of Festival Days in the former Famous Footwear store in the Holiday Village Mall. This is a free event and the public is welcome to come view the quilts, made by guild members and area quilters, Friday, noon to 6 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite quilts to help give one maker the People’s Choice Award. Raffle drawings will also be held Sunday for a mini raffle and a wall hanging that the guild members made as a fundraiser to benefit Feed My Sheep Soup Kitchen. The quilt, called “County Fair,” is sized to be a wall hanging. Constructed with different methods, including piecing and appliqué, the quilt depicts various animals and scenes common in traditional county fairs. The guild members have made several quilts throughout the years to raise money for local organizations and causes, but they also have made special quilts, such as quilts for Havre Police Department

Second Annual PAS Golf Scramble Montana State University-Northern Professional Agricultural Students Club will have its Second Annual Golf Scramble this year to help send students to the National PAS conference in Colorado. The event will be at Beaver Creek Golf Course Saturday, with the calcutta starting at 7:30 a.m. and the shotgun start out on the course at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will also be provided at the event. Everyone who wants to participate in the tournament has to register by Thursday. Teams will be groups of four and it is $250 to register a team. The calcutta will give people an opportunity to bid on a team, winning bider of the winning team will receive a cut of the total calcutta collection. Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line turns 16 The Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line is holding a “Sweet 16” birthday celebration Friday during Festival Days at the club at 500 First Ave. The club will hold tours of the changes that have been made since it opened 16 years ago, then is holding a barbecue in the location of one of those changes, the park in the back of the club. The community is invited to come and see what is available at the club, and alumni are encouraged to come in and see what is new.

Eagles Auxiliary holding burger feed The Havre Eagles Auxiliary of Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge 166 is adding to the festivities of the 2018 Havre Festival Days. The auxiliary will hold a burger feed Friday outside of the Eagles Club from 5:30 to 10 p.m. For $6 people can get a cheeseburger, salad, baked beans, chips and condiments, proceeds will be going to the Eagles Auxiliary charities.

Havre The Fifth Annual Festival of Nations will be offering visitors a chance to experience “A Day in Sri Lanka and Hawaii” in north-central Montana. Friday on the Montana State UniversityNorthern campus will see presentations by featured guests the Lethbridge Lankas Southern Alberta Ethnic Association, whose members are Canadian residents of Sri Lankan heritage, and the University of Montana Pacific Islanders Club. The groups will be performing traditional dances and music and giving presentations on their cultures. Additional cultural entertainment and education will be provided by local people giving musical and short theatrical performances and presentations, representing cultures as diverse as Irish, Native American and Kenyan. This program is hosted by Northern’s Office of Diversity Awareness and Multicultural Programs, which will also be holding a silent auction fundraiser to help fund its activities, like this one, throughout the year. Steve Heil Memorial Car Show The Steve Heil Memorial Car Show for car enthusiasts again this year. Car buffs are invited to Third Street and Fourth Avenue Friday 6 to 9 p.m. to display and view classic and restored vehicles of all kinds. Family members revived this car show in 2014 in honor of the late Steve Heil, a car lover himself. The streets will be blocked off to allow plenty of space for show vehicles to park and freedom for viewers to roam.

Magera discusses Havre at the turn of the

century A favorite speaker in the H. Earl Clack Memorial Museum summer speaker series is returning to Festival Days, following the dedication of a park established to highlight a piece of local history. Local historian and former Havre High School history teacher Jim Magera will present “Havre at the Turn of the Century” at 7 p.m. at Havre Inn and Suites Friday. Magera’s presentation will follow a dedication of Mural Park outside of the hotel, which features a mural by Jim Marshall of Medicine Hat depicting Wahkpa Chu’gn Buffalo Jump behind the Holiday Village Mall. The park has recently been completed and features grass and trees, benches and flags. The dedication is planned for 6:30 p.m. Friday at the park.

Montana State University-Northern men’s and women’s rodeo teams will be hosting more than 300 contestants from rival schools of their region during the Northern home rodeo Friday and Saturday nights, with slack for some events on both days, as well. Northern will be competing against teams from Miles City Community College, Dawson Community College, Northwest Community College, Montana State University Bozeman, University of Providence, University of Montana and University of Montana Western, and most likely a few competitors from Blackfeet Community College in Browning. General admission tickets are $12 in advance at Stockman Bank and Norman’s Ranch and Sportswear, and $15 at the gate, and $10 for Northern students and staff. Evening competition begins at 7 p.m. both nights with a full competition Friday, and a short round and the top-10 performance Saturday night. Along with the rodeo action, attendees can enjoy concessions, beer and wine. Friday will start with what head coach Doug Kallenberger called their “rough stock slack,” with saddle bronc, breakaway roping and bull riding, and Saturday’s slack will start 9 a.m. J Bar J Rodeo will be providing stock and Ray Champ will be serving as announcer for the weekend performance. This will be the third of four rodeos in the fall run for the Northern teams, which will finish out their competition year with five rodeos in the spring, Kallenberger said.

Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast The Kiwanis Club will be hosting their annual pancake breakfast Saturday 7 a.m to 1 p.m at the Eagles Club in Havre. The feed, which began in 1955 and helps fund the group’s community projects. It has since become part of the Festival Days Celebration. As in years past. Kiwanians will be at the Eagle’s Club long before daybreak to prepare for the feed.

Club member Thornton Lindsay said the public is welcome to bring their firearms and ammunition, along with eye and ear protection, to use the range for sighting in their rifles and pistols before hunting season. The club will provide targets, as well as a chronograph if any shooters want to know the speed of their bullets. If shooters have questions, experts in the club will be on hand to help. The Hill County Shooting Sports Recreation Area, five miles west on River Road north of Havre, will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. This is a chance for the general public to use the range without buying a range pass, Lindsay said.

Saturday Market Havre Festival Days activities include the final weekend of a summer-long event on Town Square — Saturday Market. Started in 2002 after the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce’s completion of the Square, the market is held every Saturday from early July through Festival Days.
