Notebook: Former Light Jake Messerly returns to Blue Pony Stadium Saturday ■ From Page 11 decided to leave Northern. Now, four years later, Messerly has resurfaced, as he is a starting WR for head coach Ryan Nourse and the Bulldogs. Messerly is playing one last season of college football, and once again, he’s part of a prolific group of wide receivers that include Melvin Walser and Nate Simkins. So far, in his return to football, Messerly has 13 passes for 159 yards
and a score for the first-place and nationallyranked Dawgs. And while Messerly played with very few of the current Lights before he left Northern, his return to Blue Pony Stadium should certainly bring back memories for him. Big-Time Numbers Speaking of prolific, there are several Frontier players who are gaining attention on the national stage.
At the top of that list is Rocky’s Ryder Rice, who leads the NAIA in sacks with 9.5. In his last two seasons, Rice has 17.5 sacks, and he still has four games left in his senior season. EOU quarterback Kai Quinn is climbing the charts too. The junior signal caller is third in the nation in total offense, while he sits fifth in passing. Quinn’s favorite target, Brendan Kelly is also third in the NAIA in receiving yards per game at 136, and is sixth in the country in receptions per outing. Mon-
tana Tech’s Jed Fike is having a big followup to last year as well. Like is fifth in the NAIA in rushing at 127 yards per game, while his 8.1 yards per carry ranks him second in the country. EOU’s Zach Jacobs also leads the country in interceptions with six, while Western linebacker Jason Ferris is fourth in the nation with his 13 tackles per game. Ferris, who will be lined up against Northern’s offense on Saturday, also has 77 tackles on the season. EOU’s Nathan Harden is also tied for first in the country in field goals, while SOU kicker Marcus Montano is second.
Havre Daily News/Colin Thompson MSU-Northern's Bryce Bumgardner runs a route during Northern's Oct. 6 home game against Eastern Oregon. Bumgardner has become one of the Lights' steadiest receivers this season. Northern is back in Blue Pony Stadium Saturday when the Lights host the 18th-ranked UM-Western Bulldogs at 1 p.m.

Hitting Back, With His Foot Northern senior Sam Tapia was a standout safety in high school, but, in college he's learned to hit the ball with his foot, and a college punter was born Chris Peterson Havre Daily News sports gferguson@havredailynews.com When it comes to football, one aspect of the game that is often underrated is the kicking game and even though it’s often referred to as one third of the game, its importance can be overlooked. Well, one person who understands just how important the kicking game can be,
is Sam Tapia, who punts and kicks for the Montana State University-Northern football team. “People always talk about how it’s a third of the game,” Tapia said. “But sometimes it doesn’t get the attention that it deserves.” For his part, Tapia wasn’t always a kicker. In fact, during his high school career, in San Diego, California, he played safety and was recruited to play junior college football at that position. While Tapia did play two years of junior college football, he wouldn’t do it as a safety, because before his freshman season, he decided as far as the hits were concerned, enough was enough. “I was just tired of getting hit,” Tapia said. “I didn't want to do it anymore. I felt like my brain was getting mushy.” Ultimately, Tapia redshirted that first season of junior college. Yet, even though he wasn’t playing, he was learning how to kick and punt from John Carney, a kicker with

Havre Daily News/Colin Thompson Montana State University-Northern senior Sam Tapia was a standout safety when he was recruited by junior colleges in California. But, hitting opponents was starting to take its toll on the San Diego native. Instead of abandoning football though, Tapia became a standout punter, and it eventually earned him a scholarship with the Lights. Now, Tapia has just two home games left at Northern, starting with Saturday's battle against nationally-ranked UM-Western. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Blue Pony Stadium.

Now however, the Battlin’ Bears are tied for second in the Frontier, and with a home game against Western in two weeks, as well as a visit to EOU still to come, RMC also has its destiny in its hands. If the Bears win out, they will be league champions regardless if they tie Western or not at season’s end. Then there’s EOU. The Mounties have quietly crept up on the Frontier. They started 1-2, but have now won three straight, including last Saturday’s huge win over SOU. Tied with Rocky and SOU for second in the Frontier right now, EOU too could win the Frontier title, and the Mounties are done playing the Raiders this season.

Again, things in the Frontier are indeed up for grabs, and let’s face it, in August, few pundits thought Western would be trying to hold off Rocky and EOU for its first league crown n more than two decades. Familiar Face Things certainly have been a struggle of late for the Montana State University-Northern Lights, and while Saturday, the Lights can play spoiler with a win over Western at Blue Pony Stadium, to do it, Northern will have to slow down a familiar face, Once upon a time, Jake Messerly was a budding star wide receiver at Northern. A gifted athlete with height, strength and speed, Messerly was looking like a can’t-miss prospect for the MSU-N offense. In 2014, Messerly caught 58 passes for 862 yards and nine scores, while he and teammate Trevor Baum were perhaps the top WR tandem in all of the Frontier. Messerly would go on to play a third year for the Lights in 2015, but after that, he

Havre Daily News/Colin Thompson MSU-Northern Athletic Director Christian Oberquell, left, stands with Pam and Dave Wilson, middle, as well as Frontier Conference Commissioner Kent Paulson and MSU-N Chancellor Greg Kegel at halftime of the Lights' game against Eastern Oregon on Oct. 6 in Havre. The Wilson's were given a Frontier Conference award for volunteerism.
Havre Daily News sports editor gferguson@havredailynews.com If you’re ever at Montana State University-Northern sporting event, then you've likely seen Dave and Pam Wilson. In one capacity or another, they’re always there, and they’re always volunteering their time for MSU-N Athletics. And at the MSU-Northern football game against Eastern Oregon back on Oct. 6, the longtime Havre couple was honored for their service by the Frontier Conference.
Pam and Dave are regulars at nearly every athletic event at MSU-Northern. They volunteer their time to countless activities and teams to help make MSU-Northern great. For the past 20 years, Pam and Dave have organized and run our chain gang at MSU-Northern home games. For many years, they instructed students and Northern teams on the ropes course and climbing wall. They have also worked the ticket booth at indoor events in the Armory Gymnasium and helped as timers for cross country meets.
Over the years, they have both worked as adjunct professors in the HPE department at Northern. Their service also includes time volunteering at NAIA National and Regional wrestling tournaments in Great Falls and Havre and they have helped as substitutes on the score table at Northern basketball games. For the past two years, they have run the hospitality room at the NAIA Women's National Basketball Tournament in Billings. Pam and Dave have also helped many teams and individuals at MSU-Northern. They have coordinated and run team re-
treats in the Bear Paw Mountains as well as on the Missouri River for the Northern women's and men's basketball and football teams. Pam and Dave Wilson embody the true spirit of volunteerism, and for that we would like to thank them and recognize them with the Frontier Conference Distinguished Service Award. Presenting the award are MSUNorthern Chancellor Greg Kegel, Northern's Athletic Director Christian Oberquell, as well as Frontier Conference Commissioner Kent Paulson.

22 years of NFL experience on his resume, along with a Super Bowl ring and 487 made field goals. “I started training with John Carney,” Tapia said. “His kid went to my high school and my dad was actually the one who persuaded to me to starting working out with John. Originally, I was going to try and play lacrosse, but there are just so many more opportunities in football.” After sitting out a year and training with Carney on what was essentially a daily basis, Tapia started punting for Palomar Junior College in San Diego and during his two seasons there, he put together a record-breaking career, notching 49 punts inside the 20, 17 in his first season and 32 in his second. He broke the school records single season (32), career (49) and single game punts (5) inside the 20. Tapia’s punting earned him All-Conference honors and also got him noticed by four-year football schools, including UNLV, where Tapia was slated to go before a mix up academically left him scrambling at the last minute. “I was going to go to UNLV,” Tapia said. “And I didn’t
have enough credits. So it was late in the process and the Northern coaching staff was interested in me. I came up here (to Havre) and decided to keep my football career going.” Coming to Northern from San Diego was a bit of culture shock for Tapia, but the cold weather was also shocking and he said learning to punt in the cold and the wind has been an adjustment. “It’s hard because sometimes I can’t feel my hands,” Tapia said. “So I have to watch the ball drop onto my foot and my foot is cold, so I really can’t feel the ball hitting it. It makes it more difficult. And the ball is harder, which makes it more difficult to make good contact. The wind is another thing that really gets me. It’s definitely something you have to account for and it makes it tough, especially at Blue Pony Stadium.” Currently, Tapia is averaging 35.4 yards per punt on 40 attempts this season. His ability to pin opponents inside the 20 hasn’t changed and depending how things for

the rest of the season and beyond, he said his punting career might not be over just yet. “It’s something I have thought about,” Tapia said of pursuing professional football. “I know the work it would take for me to try and get where I’d want to go and I am trying to decide if I want to do that, but if I got a chance to go to a pro day or something, I would do that.” Either way, Tapia’s two-year career with the Lights is coming to a close and this Saturday against MontanaWestern will be one of his final outings, which means
his days of kicking in the snow and cold will soon be over. However, in spite of the freezing temperatures and less than ideal conditions for punting, Tapia has enjoyed MSU-N and the community of Havre as a whole. “It’s just been great for me to get out of my comfort zone,” Tapia said. “I have really enjoyed that and I have really enjoyed the people of Havre. It’s just a great community and the people are really supportive.” Tapia and the Lights will take on the Bulldogs Saturday at 1 p.m., inside Blue Pony Stadium.

It wasn’t long ago people were perhaps leaving Rocky Mountain College for dead too.
