Making himself right at home All the way from Florida, safety Japerri Powell hasn't just adjusted to life at MSU-Northern, he's thriving in it, on and off the football field Aarron Thompson

Many spend their lives walking along a diverse path that can lead to their dreams or even steer them away. Those who steer off the path will hopefully find their way back on the right one. But, those who stay on the right path find what they have been dreaming of accomplishing. No journey is easy and will always be full of surprises. Despite that, the end result is often is the most satisfying feeling one can achieve. Montana State University-Northern freshman safety Japerri Powell is a talent that has graced the field this season and has made an impact on the Lights' defense. Powell’s journey to Northern was quite the
long one, as the young Powell traveled all the way from Orlando, Florida to come play with the Lights. Powell’s football journey started at a young age and his passion for the game has never dwindled in his lengthy career. Starting at such a young age has engrained important information and skill sets that have propelled Powell to make an impact wherever he went in his future. Powell grew up to play at Dr, Phillips High School and quickly became a standout talent for the team. Powell’s skill is on a higher level than most college freshman that come out of high school. Many colleges had offers for Powell, but Northern was the school that grabbed his attention and the 5-9, 175-pound recruit made the trip to Montana to put on a show for the Northern recruiting team. After a great showcase, MSU-N head coach Andrew Rolin was and is thrilled to have Powell on their defense. “JP came on to the recruiting scene late for us,” said Rolin. “He had a few big offers and it just happened to work out right for us. It was exciting to get him in here and he made an impact the moment he showed up here. He’s a talented kid and everyone on the field sees that. He’s got that energy and loves the game of football.” After much of the season has passed for

Night games are always special at Blue Pony Stadium George Ferguson
Havre Daily News sports editor gferguson@havredailynews.com It won’t quite be October anymore when the Carroll College Fighting Saints come to Havre to play the Montana State University-Northern Lights. But, it will be close enough. It will be, close, to the 14th anniversary of when Northern snapped Carroll’s 32-game winning streak in a historic 10-3 victory over the then No. 1 Saints in late October of 2006. The Lights also snapped their own losing streak nearly three years ago when they beat the Fighting Saints 28-14 back in 2016 at Blue Pony Stadium. So, to say the Lights have a history of streak drama against Carroll, well it wouldn’t be far off from the truth. That’s why, it stands to reason that, against the Saints Saturday night, Northern is hoping to put another streak to rest. Since that win over Carroll in 2016, the Lights have lost 34 straight Frontier Conference games, the 34th being last week’s loss at Montana Western. Of course, the streak has been a tough one for the MSU-N program, but, in the last two seasons,
the Lights, under head coach Andrew Rolin, have been doing anything and everything they can to turn around their conference fortunes. One of the main issues is, no matter how much the Lights improve, they still play in the SEC of the NAIA. In other words, the Frontier Conference just doesn’t let up, and recent history shows that. Even when traditional powers like Carroll and Montana Tech fall back, there’s teams like Southern Oregon, Eastern Oregon, and now College of Idaho who rise right up to the top. So, rebuilding in the Frontier is just not an easy proposition, and that’s what the Lights are up against week in and week out. Still, Northern is certainly due for a breakthrough - the Lights will be looking for some oldfashioned Blue Pony Stadium mojo Saturday night. Yes, that’s right, I said Saturday night. Northern’s game with Carroll was moved from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. due to Havre High’s home playoff game against Lewistown Saturday afternoon. So that’s some more mojo the Lights are hoping to have, because, there’s been a few times when the Lights have really played well, under the Lights.
Anyone remember the final game of 2004? That was a night game moved because of an HHS playoff game and the Lights pulled a huge upset of Rocky Mountain College for their only win of that season. That just happened to be the first win of Mark Samson’s career, and it also happened to be the same month that now Carroll College head coach Troy Purcell led the Blue Ponies to the Class A state championship. So, while Halloween will have come and gone by the time the Lights and Saints kick off Saturday night, don’t be surprises of some weird things happen during the latest showdown between Northern and Carroll. Jund Crazy In Montana Western’s dominant win over the Lights last Saturday in Dillon, Bulldog quarterback Job Jund certainly put himself back into consideration for the Frontier Conference Offensive Player of the Year Award. Jund threw for 330 yards on just 21 completions, and found the endzone six times through the air. Just for fun, he also rushed for 88 more yards, which led all ball carriers in the game, and scored one more touchdown. The day certainly could have earned June Frontier and NAIA Offensive Player of the Week
honors. Jund’s performance put the Dawgs squarely back in the race for an NAIA playoff berth. Jund, who has now thrown for 20 touchdowns against just five interceptions, and ranks third in the NAIA in total offense, and third in passer rating, might just be the one player that has a chance to help his team take down College of Idaho. With three games left in 2019, the Frontier is down to a three-team race, and C of I may not lose the league title no matter what happens. But, Montana Tech already has lost to the Yotes twice, while Western gets its only shot at the unbeaten Yotes next week in Caldwell, Idaho. And, the Dawgs will need to beat the Yotes to have any chance of making the playoffs, because a loss by either

MSU-Northern Rewind Bulldogs take losing streak out on the Lights in Dillon George Ferguson
Havre Daily News sports editor gferguson@havredailynews.com Last week it was a sleeping Bear that woke up against the Montana State University-Northern Lights. On Saturday, it was a sleeping Dawg. Saturday in Dillon, the Lights saw the No. 24 Montana Western Bulldogs snap their two-game Frontier Conference losing streak with a resounding 59-13 win at Vigilante Field. The defeat in Dillon dropped the Lights to 0-7 in the Frontier and 1-7 overall, while Western improved to 5-2. The win was also a season sweep for the Bulldogs, and it came via an incredible performance by sophomore quarterback Jon Jund. Jund threw for 330 yards and six touchdowns, and rushed for 88 more and another score in a dominating display of offense. Jund opened the scoring with two straight touchdown passes in the first quarter, but the Lights answered early in the second when true freshman Tre' Long found Bryce Bumgardner for a four-yard

offense were just getting started. From there, Western scored 44 unanswered points, and the Lights
didn't get on the board again until a fourth-quarter kickoff return by freshman Kyle Jacklich, who an-
swered Western's final score of the day with a 93-yard touchdown. Still, as exciting as Jacklich's return was, the day belonged to the Western offense. The Dawgs rolled up 540 yards of offense and 25 first downs, as opposed to 365 yards for the Lights. Northern did run the ball solidly with Jett Robertson totaling 84 yards. However, Western's defense stymied Long, who threw for 106 yards and four interceptions before full-time starter Brenden Medina came back on in relief. The Western offense also got 130-yard receiving days from both Walker McKitrick and Nate Simkins, while Jaren Maki led the MSU-N defense with 11 tackles and Japerri Powell had two sacks. Western linebacker Jason Ferris had 17 tackles and a sack for the Bulldogs. Northern returns home to start a two-game homestand when the Lights host Carroll College Saturday night at 7 p.m. inside Blue Pony Stadium. The kickoff time was moved to the evening due to Havre High's home playoff game with Lewistown Saturday afternoon.

Troy Purcell became the 21st football coach at Carroll College on Dec. 7, 2018. He contributed to a run of success while playing at Carroll. He played under the legendary Bob Petrino from 1986-1990, where he earned an all-conference recognition his senior year. The Saints won four conference championships and made the NAIA playoffs each season Purcell suited up. Purcell comes to the helm with the Saints after being an assistant at the University of Idaho under Paul Petrino. He also won state titles at Havre High and Bozeman.

MSU-Northern football, Powell has proven his skills out on the field. Powell has racked up a total of 59 tackles, seven tackles-forloss, 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble-recovery and two pass-breakups so far in his career at Northern. That is a pretty big start for the young talent, who initially came to MSU-N to play running back. Powell has been used in the Lights’ kick return schemes, too. So far this season, Powell has put up six attempts for 114 yards, with his longest return being 24 yards against Arizona Christian University in Northern’s season-opener. But, much of Powell’s highlights
are at his position of safety. Powell’s skills have helped a very young Lights' defense out this season. But, how Powell came to Northern is a great story of taking a chance and succeeding. “I was receiving a lot of phone calls from Coach Crane, Chestnut and Rolin to come here and I was thinking about it a lot,” said Powell. “I was like, I better just go. This is my last opportunity, why not? Why don’t I give it a shot? So, I came, far away from home. It’s just a good feeling now. I’m happy to be here and to be a part of the program.”'

However, not only has Powell adjusted to life at a small college in Montana, but he's also become one of the top safeties in the Frontier Conference in just his first season of college football.
Powell is not only a part of the program, but a big part of the Lights defensive scheme, as well. Safety is a very important position on the defense, as it is essential for disrupting the opponent’s passing-game. It is often that one will find the safety downfield attempting to break up a deep pass and make a big play. But, some defensive schemes have used safeties in pass-rush situations. In that case, it is common to see the safety blitzing around the outside to blindside the quarterback and get a sack. It is safe to say, Powell has made plays
in both situations and has made some noise on the Lights defense. On top of that, Powell knows what has helped him become talented at his safety position. “I just like football in general,” said Powell. “I’ve been playing this game for so long, so I decided to play college football. I just like to hit, play around and fly around with my boys. It’s fun.” A love for the game and a motivation to make a big play for the team is always impactful in one’s career. Powell’s mindset is

It is important to be passionate about what one does because if one is not, then what is the point of putting in the effort? Powell’s passion has no need to be questioned and is an excellent quality in the freshman talent. Powell is always seen on the field motivated and ready to make a play when the team needs it. Powell never gave up on his love for football and that alone has gave him a great opportunity to continue to be one of Northern’s most impactful defensive talents. Powell, like many defenders across the sport,
have a favorite things when it comes to the game and playing in their position. “Hitting,” said Powell. “That’s what I like and I love it. They tell me to slow down and calm down at practice, but I love it. I’ve learned to be aggressive.” Powell is always excited to be out on the field and having a great time alongside his teammates. Despite his immense passion for the physical aspects of the game, both the coaches and players respect Powell for the work he puts forward in each game. With a long time till the end of his college football career, Powell still has a lot more skills he
can develop and expand on throughout his years with Northern. And Saturday night against Carroll College, Powell will be ready to give it everything he has got to help MSU-N find another win in its season. The journey that Powell has made from his hometown in Orlando to his new home in Havre is a blessed one and has certainly made an impact on Powell and the way he plays. The Lights are happy to see him out on the field wreaking havoc. MSU-Northern kicks off against the Carroll College Fighting Saints Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Blue Pony Stadium.

Troy Purcell became the 21st football coach at Carroll College on Dec. 7, 2018. He contributed to a run of success while playing at Carroll. He played under the legendary Bob Petrino from 1986-1990, where he earned an all-conference recognition his senior year. The Saints won four conference championships and made the NAIA playoffs each season Purcell suited up. Purcell comes to the helm with the Saints after being an assistant at the University of Idaho under Paul Petrino. He also won state titles at Havre High and Bozeman.

MSU-Northern Rewind Bulldogs take losing streak out on the Lights in Dillon George Ferguson
Havre Daily News sports editor gferguson@havredailynews.com Last week it was a sleeping Bear that woke up against the Montana State University-Northern Lights. On Saturday, it was a sleeping Dawg. Saturday in Dillon, the Lights saw the No. 24 Montana Western Bulldogs snap their two-game Frontier Conference losing streak with a resounding 59-13 win at Vigilante Field. The defeat in Dillon dropped the Lights to 0-7 in the Frontier and 1-7 overall, while Western improved to 5-2. The win was also a season sweep for the Bulldogs, and it came via an incredible performance by sophomore quarterback Jon Jund. Jund threw for 330 yards and six touchdowns, and rushed for 88 more and another score in a dominating display of offense. Jund opened the scoring with two straight touchdown passes in the first quarter, but the Lights answered early in the second when true freshman Tre' Long found Bryce Bumgardner for a four-yard

offense were just getting started. From there, Western scored 44 unanswered points, and the Lights
didn't get on the board again until a fourth-quarter kickoff return by freshman Kyle Jacklich, who an-
swered Western's final score of the day with a 93-yard touchdown. Still, as exciting as Jacklich's return was, the day belonged to the Western offense. The Dawgs rolled up 540 yards of offense and 25 first downs, as opposed to 365 yards for the Lights. Northern did run the ball solidly with Jett Robertson totaling 84 yards. However, Western's defense stymied Long, who threw for 106 yards and four interceptions before full-time starter Brenden Medina came back on in relief. The Western offense also got 130-yard receiving days from both Walker McKitrick and Nate Simkins, while Jaren Maki led the MSU-N defense with 11 tackles and Japerri Powell had two sacks. Western linebacker Jason Ferris had 17 tackles and a sack for the Bulldogs. Northern returns home to start a two-game homestand when the Lights host Carroll College Saturday night at 7 p.m. inside Blue Pony Stadium. The kickoff time was moved to the evening due to Havre High's home playoff game with Lewistown Saturday afternoon.

Many spend their lives walking along a diverse path that can lead to their dreams or even steer them away. Those who steer off the path will hopefully find their way back on the right one. But, those who stay on the right path find what they have been dreaming of accomplishing. No journey is easy and will always be full of surprises. Despite that, the end result is often is the most satisfying feeling one can achieve. Montana State University-Northern freshman safety Japerri Powell is a talent that has graced the field this season and has made an impact on the Lights' defense. Powell’s journey to Northern was quite the
long one, as the young Powell traveled all the way from Orlando, Florida to come play with the Lights. Powell’s football journey started at a young age and his passion for the game has never dwindled in his lengthy career. Starting at such a young age has engrained important information and skill sets that have propelled Powell to make an impact wherever he went in his future. Powell grew up to play at Dr, Phillips High School and quickly became a standout talent for the team. Powell’s skill is on a higher level than most college freshman that come out of high school. Many colleges had offers for Powell, but Northern was the school that grabbed his attention and the 5-9, 175-pound recruit made the trip to Montana to put on a show for the Northern recruiting team. After a great showcase, MSU-N head coach Andrew Rolin was and is thrilled to have Powell on their defense. “JP came on to the recruiting scene late for us,” said Rolin. “He had a few big offers and it just happened to work out right for us. It was exciting to get him in here and he made an impact the moment he showed up here. He’s a talented kid and everyone on the field sees that. He’s got that energy and loves the game of football.” After much of the season has passed for

Night games are always special at Blue Pony Stadium George Ferguson
Havre Daily News sports editor gferguson@havredailynews.com It won’t quite be October anymore when the Carroll College Fighting Saints come to Havre to play the Montana State University-Northern Lights. But, it will be close enough. It will be, close, to the 14th anniversary of when Northern snapped Carroll’s 32-game winning streak in a historic 10-3 victory over the then No. 1 Saints in late October of 2006. The Lights also snapped their own losing streak nearly three years ago when they beat the Fighting Saints 28-14 back in 2016 at Blue Pony Stadium. So, to say the Lights have a history of streak drama against Carroll, well it wouldn’t be far off from the truth. That’s why, it stands to reason that, against the Saints Saturday night, Northern is hoping to put another streak to rest. Since that win over Carroll in 2016, the Lights have lost 34 straight Frontier Conference games, the 34th being last week’s loss at Montana Western. Of course, the streak has been a tough one for the MSU-N program, but, in the last two seasons,
the Lights, under head coach Andrew Rolin, have been doing anything and everything they can to turn around their conference fortunes. One of the main issues is, no matter how much the Lights improve, they still play in the SEC of the NAIA. In other words, the Frontier Conference just doesn’t let up, and recent history shows that. Even when traditional powers like Carroll and Montana Tech fall back, there’s teams like Southern Oregon, Eastern Oregon, and now College of Idaho who rise right up to the top. So, rebuilding in the Frontier is just not an easy proposition, and that’s what the Lights are up against week in and week out. Still, Northern is certainly due for a breakthrough - the Lights will be looking for some oldfashioned Blue Pony Stadium mojo Saturday night. Yes, that’s right, I said Saturday night. Northern’s game with Carroll was moved from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. due to Havre High’s home playoff game against Lewistown Saturday afternoon. So that’s some more mojo the Lights are hoping to have, because, there’s been a few times when the Lights have really played well, under the Lights.
Anyone remember the final game of 2004? That was a night game moved because of an HHS playoff game and the Lights pulled a huge upset of Rocky Mountain College for their only win of that season. That just happened to be the first win of Mark Samson’s career, and it also happened to be the same month that now Carroll College head coach Troy Purcell led the Blue Ponies to the Class A state championship. So, while Halloween will have come and gone by the time the Lights and Saints kick off Saturday night, don’t be surprises of some weird things happen during the latest showdown between Northern and Carroll. Jund Crazy In Montana Western’s dominant win over the Lights last Saturday in Dillon, Bulldog quarterback Job Jund certainly put himself back into consideration for the Frontier Conference Offensive Player of the Year Award. Jund threw for 330 yards on just 21 completions, and found the endzone six times through the air. Just for fun, he also rushed for 88 more yards, which led all ball carriers in the game, and scored one more touchdown. The day certainly could have earned June Frontier and NAIA Offensive Player of the Week
honors. Jund’s performance put the Dawgs squarely back in the race for an NAIA playoff berth. Jund, who has now thrown for 20 touchdowns against just five interceptions, and ranks third in the NAIA in total offense, and third in passer rating, might just be the one player that has a chance to help his team take down College of Idaho. With three games left in 2019, the Frontier is down to a three-team race, and C of I may not lose the league title no matter what happens. But, Montana Tech already has lost to the Yotes twice, while Western gets its only shot at the unbeaten Yotes next week in Caldwell, Idaho. And, the Dawgs will need to beat the Yotes to have any chance of making the playoffs, because a loss by either

Tech or Western at this point, means the Frontier will once again get just one team into the NAIA postseason. Frontier Honors College of Idaho quarterback Darisu-James Peterson was named Frontier Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Carroll defensive end Rex Irby was named Frontier Defensive Player of the Week. EOU WR Josh Mendoza was named Frontier Special Teams Player of the Week.
