Havre again holding Community Thanksgiving Dinner Havre’s Community Thanksgiving Dinner is set for the Nov. 22 Thanksgiving Day this year, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Jude Parish Center, 440 Seventh Ave. Sponsored in full by an anonymous donor, this decades-old event serves more than 600 free meals each Thanksgiving — at the Parish Center and through home deliveries. Many locals come to the meal, bringing family, meeting friends or making new friends across the table, but people also come from far and wide, as well — some visiting and some in town for other reasons. More than one occasion has seen stranded travelers taking part. While many diners come just for the uniquely warm experience, many of the volunteers come for the same reason. A professional chef takes the helm in the kitchen, supported by kitchen staff at Gary & Leo’s Fresh Foods, who roast the turkeys. A full crew of volunteers do everything from setup to cleanup, including delivering and serving meals. Diners are treated to succulent turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy, fresh vegetables, corn and rolls fresh from the oven, followed by a slice of pumpkin pie.

Festival of Trees set for Saturday at Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line The Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line is holding its special annual event with some unique trees as a fundraiser for the club, including, once again, a quilted donation from internationally recognized local quilter Karen Vosen. The 11th annual Festival of Trees is set for 7 p.m. at the club, with the $25 tickets available by calling the club at 265-6206. “The Festival of Trees is always a fun night and a great way to kick off the holiday season,” said Krystal Steinmetz, marketing and events coordinator for the Boys & Girls Club. “Our community is so generous; they really come out to support the club.”

Proceeds from the event provide support for the hundreds of kids who use the club each day. This year’s Festival of Trees theme is “12 Days of Christmas.” The event features hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, games, and live and silent auctions. The trees showcased at the event are designed and donated by local residents, organizations and businesses. Vosen regularly has quilts selected for international showings, including two quilts juried into the International Quilt Festival in Houston this year.

Chinook Community Thanksgiving Dinner set Chinook has served up its Community Thanksgiving Day Dinner for more than 30 years. Diners are welcome to meet from noon to 2 p.m. at the Chinook Senior Center, 324 Pennsylvania. Volunteers cook and serve a traditional meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, cole slaw, relish tray, rolls, cranberry relish, fruit and pumpkin pies and other desserts for 150 to 175 people annually. Everyone is invited to attend to enjoy the meal and camaraderie of friends, family and neighbors, along with music from the Kitchen Band. Meals are also delivered to

those who cannot get out of the house. The dinner is served at no cost to the diners, though free-will donations are welcome and help pay for the next year’s dinner, along with donations from businesses and community members. Any leftovers are donated to the Senior Center or the Chinook Food Pantry. This traditional dinner is made and served through the efforts of many volunteers, and organizer Jay Eslick said anyone who wants to volunteer to serve or clean up Thanksgiving Day can call him at 262-4333 or just show up and “we’ll find a spot for them.”

Live nativity set for Dec. 8 at Van Orsdel United Methodist Church The annual live nativity scene will draw crowds Saturday, Dec. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. to Van Orsdel United Methodist Church at 410 Fifth Ave. Spectators can drive past the scene or stop along the street or sidewalk to take in the classic depiction of the nativity scene come to life. Church volunteers set up the nativity, which includes live animals, and members take half-hour shifts enacting all the parts, including a hovering angel. The nativity has been held annually for about 25 years in all types of weather conditions, organizer Ray Toth said.

This year, Toth added, will see the return of the llama and alpaca which will join the sheep and donkey. The live animals roaming around might make the scene seem like a petting zoo to children and animal-loving adults — especially when the animals are friendly and the people in the nativity are holding their positions — but this is not the purpose of the animals or the nativity, he said. “It’s a pretty solemn occasion,” Toth said, adding, “You’re trying to depict a postcard picture of the birth of Jesus that night, capture that moment.”

Eagles Club will host Havre Community Christmas Dinner Havre Eagles Club, with the support of volunteers and donors, will once again host the Community Christmas Dinner Dec. 25. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., volunteers will be serving up a traditional Christmas meal with turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy, rolls, corn and an assortment of salads and desserts. Started decades ago in Havre, this event provides a full meal to everyone, whether locals or visitors, who want to enjoy a warm holiday dinner and community spirit. Volunteers are welcome, Eagles

manager Tom Farnham said. Anyone interested in helping can just show up that day. People in Havre who are unable to get to the dinner will be able to sign up to have a meal delivered. Announcements will appear in the newspaper when the signup period is open. The meal is free to everyone, though donations are appreciated and go toward funding the next year’s meal. For more information, call Farnham at 265-9551.

Northern Rodeo team sets Cowboy Christmas for Dec. 1 The Montana State UniversityNorthern rodeo teams are again hosting their Cowboy Christmas fundraiser during the holidays — between their fall and spring rodeo seasons. The event, set this year for Saturday, Dec. 1, in the Armory Gymnasium, is the biggest fundraiser for the Northern men’s and women’s rodeo teams. The fundraiser includes no-host cocktails at 5 p.m., a prime rib and shrimp dinner at 6 p.m., many door prizes, raffle

items, a silent auction, a live auction and dancing to live music to conclude the night. Tickets are available at Stockman Bank, Independence Bank and Norman’s Ranch & Sportswear, or from any Northern rodeo team member. Ticket prices are $40 per person, $300 for a reserve table of six, or $400 for a reserve table of eight. Reserved tables come with bottles of wine. All proceeds benefit the MSU-Northern rodeo teams.

Montana Actors’ Theatre sets ‘Peter Pan’ panto to frolic through the holiday season Montana Actors’ Theatre is continuing its new tradition of brining an old English tradition to Havre this holiday season. Its Christmas pantomime of “Peter Pan” is set to run at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday Dec. 7-8, 14-15 and 21-22, with 2 p.m. matinées Saturday, Dec. 8, and

Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 15-16 and Dec. 2223.

The pantos are described as sort of a

“Fractured Fairy Tale” version of classic stories, with singing, jokes and comic antics for all.

The Havre Daily News wishes a very merry Christmas to all!

Christmas Cash keeps business local during the holidays Havre Area Chamber of Commerce A local holiday loan program from the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce, Christmas Cash has a significant impact on the local economy. More than $7 million has stayed in Havre since the Christmas Cash program started over 28 years ago. It is money spent with local businesses that support the community each and every day. The Christmas Cash program brings together the Havre business community in a common goal.

Havre and area residents who bank with participating institutions — Bear Paw Credit, Independence Bank and Stockman Bank — are eligible for loans up to $1,500, interest free, upon approved credit. The goal of the program, when started in 1990, was to stimulate local holiday shopping and support the local businesses that support this community all year long through donations and sponsorships. That goal remains the same. Contact the Chamber at 265-4383 for more information.

Proceeds from this quilt are intended to be used toward building a shed to house the club’s bus.

“Fractured Fairy Tale” version of classic stories, with singing, jokes and comic antics for all.
