So when taking on a big project like remodeling your home, you want to find a contractor you can trust. After all, you are making big changes to the biggest asset you own, right? When looking for a contractor to complete any home improvement project there a few simple guidelines one can follow that will save you time and money in the long run. With a little homework and due diligence on your part, you can save yourself a lot of hassle, heartache, and frustration. We have compiled a few tips to help you in your search. • Make a list. Not every good home remodeling contractor is great at advertising, and not every great advertiser is a great home remodeling contractor. But if you’re new to hiring a home remodeling contractor, seek those who have an established reputation and recommendations. Word of mouth is a great place to find reputable contractors. Friends, family, or co-workers who have just had projects completed could point you in the right direction. They will be the first to tell you who to hire and who to stay away from. Think twice before adding close relatives and family to this list. Remember construction is a regulated profession, just like medicine and dentistry. If the contractor does not have these insurances current while working on a project, it could leave you, the homeowner, exposed to a liability should something happen. • ask for recommendations. A reputable contractor will have projects in the area that they would be happy to direct you to. You also may wish to check the contractor out with your local building department, trade association or union, consumer protection agency, consumer fraud unit, or the Better Business Bureau. If there have ever been any issues with the contractor, these sources will know, and they can tell you what the contractor has done to rectify the situation. • Compare apples to apples. Make sure you're comparing bids based on identical plans, specifications, products, and scope of work. A trustworthy contractor will provide a written estimate and explain the scope of work to be performed. Do not automatically accept the lowest bid thinking you are getting a great deal. In fact, you should beware of any bid that is substantially lower than the others. It probably indicates that the contractor made a mistake or is not including all the work quoted by his or her competitors. You may be headed for a dispute with your contractor if you accept an abnormally low bid. It also is possible that a low-bidding contractor may cut corners, use inferior products, or do substandard work to make a profit. Buyers beware of a price that seems too good to be true. • obtain a written contract. Contractors who are legitimate will provide their customers with a written contract. By doing a little research, you should be able to find a credit union that will suit your needs. Ask your friends, relatives and associates about their experiences with credit unions. People that are happy with their institution will be more than willing to provide a recommendation. Search the Internet and investigate the different credit unions in your area. Make a list of the financial institutions that offer the most appealing options for you. Compare the different credit unions on your list. Call their local offices and ask them about their interest rates, fees, minimum balance requirements, loan eligibility, access to ATM machines and online access to accounts. Measure the pros and cons of each credit union and choose the one that best fits your needs. How do I Teach Kids About Credit Unions? As stated by the World Council of Credit Unions, "credit unions ... provide members the opportunity to own their own financial institution and help them create opportunities such as starting small businesses, building family homes and educating their children." There is a lot of value in introducing the credit union concept to kids so as they grow older they will be able to compare types of financial institutions and choose the best type for their goals and financial needs Begin by comparing it to a bank. Explain that banks collect all the investments of depositors and then lend the money to others at a higher interest rate, sometimes a much higher rate. The difference between what the bank pays the depositors and what they lend it at, is how the bank makes money. In addition, if the bank charges fees, it makes more profit. Much of the profit goes to the shareholders of the bank, not the depositors. Show the advantages of a credit union to a bank. Start by stating that a credit union

is owned by each member/depositor, so any profit the credit union makes in lending money will come back to each depositor. It can come back in the form of lower interest rates than what banks charge, lower fees or a higher return on savings. In other words, the depositor is the one who benefits from the credit union's profits. Speak about the power of each credit union depositor. Each credit union depositor can run for a seat on the board of directors and vote in the credit union's elections to choose a board. This means credit union depositors have a strong say in how the institution is run. In a bank, depositors have no say in how it is run. While traditional banks advertise and function as profit-making organizations, credit unions are community-oriented and cater to members rather than to bank owners or stockholders. Any earnings a credit union accumulates in the process of doing business are used for the benefit of its membership. For example, a dividend may be issued or fees for financial services may be reduced. Credit unions are cooperative, not for profit, organizations owned and operated by its members. The credit union functions to serve its members by providing loans at favorable interest rates and offering low-fee savings accounts and other financial services. By pooling their assets into the credit union, members themselves provide funds to make loans to each other. History Credit unions began in the mid-1800s by a group of tradespeople in Rochdale, England. The idea was to combine their resources to buy goods in bulk at a discount and make those goods available to their members at reasonable prices. The concept spread to Germany, Canada and the United States over the next half-century and continues today. In the United States, some smaller credit unions have merged with larger ones, but overall membership has increased to almost 85 million according to the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). Characteristics A board of elected member volunteers

runs the credit union. In contrast, a typical traditional bank will employ a paid board of directors to oversee the institution. Credit unions may be sponsored by employers, churches, schools or even communities of current residents. Employer sponsored credit unions usually allow employee family members to join. Accountability Federal credit unions are chartered and monitored by the National Credit Union Association (NCUA). NCUA stipulates certain rules of organization and operation to which a federal credit union must adhere. NCUA also provides insurance to depositor members of credit unions through the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF). Similar to FDIC insurance, which is commonly provided by traditional banks, NCUSIF is backed by the United States government.

How to... Lose Weight There have been so many different types of diets it is hard to keep track of them any longer. Despite this fact, 70% of our country is over weight and it continues to climb, and ironically we continue to return to “dieting” in order to address this problem. This approach is really more harmful than it is beneficial for the most part and creates a vicious metabolic cycle that can damage our health in the end. We must re-evaluate our dieting paradigm if we are to ever recover our health. First, it must be understood that a diet usually means decreasing calories and increasing activity levels, and in doing this we create a state of metabolic starvation in the body. Decreasing metabolic resources needed by the cell for proper function and increasing the need for those metabolic resources leads to one result , metabolic starvation. This forces the body to start metabolizing vital functional tissues such as lean body mass, visceral fat, also the pads in the bottom of the feet and in the joints instead of the abnormal fat stores that have accumulated, in essence, the body begins to cannibalize itself. This is where HCG comes in, it actually protects the body from cannibalizing itself. tions as outlined in these By-Laws. Many general repair shops are getting into the transmission repair business by offering to install “reman” transmissions. What is a reman? A reman is a transmission that’s been remanufactured in a factory setting, and shipped to the repair shop to be installed as a complete unit. Is it okay to buy a reman? That’s a pretty broad question. The answer depends on the quality of the reman itself. Some are very high quality; others less so. More important than the reman itself, however, is the shop or technician performing the diagnosis. Remember: Many cars with transmission problems don’t actually need a new transmission. And, if your car doesn’t need a new transmission, you shouldn’t pay for one. But if the technician performing the diagnosis doesn’t have the skill or experience with your car’s transmission, you might easily find yourself paying for a new transmission… whether you need one or not. If the reman transmission still doesn’t work, the reman companies have technicians on staff to help the shop work through the actual problem. So your car will probably shift just fine when you get it back. The only question then is: Was the problem you had really in the transmission? Or did you pay for a transmission you didn’t really need? Only a qualified, professional transmission technician can diagnose your car reliably, and tell you for certain whether you actually need a rebuilt transmission, or whether a much less expensive repair will take care of the problem.

Mechanics may be certified by a car manufacturer or a general organization such as the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Reassure them that you will visit often and continue to be a regular part of their lives- that you no longer will be worried about their safety and well being. As a last resort, some residents find comfort if told that they can always move out if they are not satisfied. Presented as a "trial basis" rather than a permanent decision often removes barriers.

How to.... Diagnose & Treat Glaucoma Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to your eye's optic nerve and gets worse over time. It's often associated with a buildup of pressure inside the eye. Glaucoma tends to be inherited and may not show up until later in life. The increased pressure, called intraocular pressure, can damage the optic nerve, which transmits images to the brain. If damage to the optic nerve from high eye pressure continues, glaucoma will cause permanent loss of vision. Without treatment, glaucoma can cause total permanent blindness within a few years. Because most people with glaucoma have no early symptoms or pain from this increased pressure, it is important to see your eye doctor regularly so that glaucoma can be diagnosed and treated before long-term visual loss occurs. If you are over the age of 40 and if you have a family history of glaucoma, you should have a complete eye exam with an eye doctor every one to two years. If you have health problems such as diabetes or a family history of glaucoma or are at risk for other eye diseases, you may need to visit your eye doctor more frequently. Why Does Pressure Rise in the Eye to Cause Glaucoma? Glaucoma usually occurs when pressure in your eye increases. This can happen when eye fluid isn't circulating normally in the front part of the eye. Normally, this fluid, called aqueous humor, flows out of the eye through a mesh-like channel. If this channel becomes blocked, fluid builds up, causing glaucoma. The direct cause of this blockage is unknown, but doctors do know that it can be inherited, meaning it is passed from parents to children. Less common causes of glaucoma include a blunt or chemical injury to the

eye, severe eye infection, blockage of blood vessels in the eye, inflammatory conditions of the eye, and occasionally eye surgery to correct another condition. Glaucoma usually occurs in both eyes, but it may involve each eye to a different extent. What Are the Types of Glaucoma? There are two main types of glaucoma: 1. Open-angle glaucoma. Also called wide-angle glaucoma, this is the most common type of glaucoma. The structures of the eye appear normal, but fluid in the eye does not flow properly through the drain of the eye, called the trabecular meshwork. 2. Angle-closure glaucoma. Also called acute or chronic angle-closure or narrow-angle glaucoma, this type of glaucoma is less common but can cause a sudden buildup of pressure in the eye. Drainage may be poor because the angle between the iris and the cornea (where a drainage channel for the eye is located) is too narrow. One of the problems with glaucoma, especially open-angle glaucoma, is that there are typically no symptoms in the early stages. Many people who have the disease do not know they have it. Adults with no symptoms of or risk factors for eye disease should have a complete eye disease screening by age 40 — the time when early signs of disease and changes in vision may start to happen. Based on the results of the initial screening, your ophthalmologist will let you know how often to return for followup exams. Adults 65 or older should have an eye exam every one to two years, or as recommended by your ophthalmologist. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is useful in diagnosing many eye conditions, including: • Macular hole; • Macular pucker; • Macular edema; • Age-related macular degeneration; • Central serous retinopathy; • Diabetic retinopathy; • Preretinal membranes. In addition, OCT is often used to evaluate disorders of the optic nerve. The optic nerve is made up of many nerve fibers and sends signals from your retina to your brain, where these signals are interpreted as the images you see. The OCT exam is helpful in determining changes to the fibers of the optic nerve, such as those caused by glaucoma. Since OCT relies on light waves, it cannot be used successfully with any condition that interferes with light passing through the eye, such as dense cataracts or significant bleeding in the vitreous (the gel in the center of the eye).

How to... Avoid Getting Mold in Your Home By Tim Evens Carpet Care and Restoration Mold is everywhere. It is known as nature’s recycler. Mold’s purpose is to break down dead organic matter - toppled trees, dead animals, fallen leaves, grass, plants and the like, into soil. Without mold these materials would take much longer to decay and become soil. There are about one thousand species of mold in the United States. The most press has been given to “Black Mold,” officially known as Stachybotrys chartarum. Stachybotrys receives so much attention because it is one of the many mycotoxin producing molds. Mycotoxin’s are what physicians believe cause negative health consequences to humans. Mold is not very problematic to our health as long as it is kept out of doors. Health concerns proliferate once mold enters a structure. The way mold reproduces is through mold spores, which are basically mold seeds. A mold spore is much like a dandelion plant, the seeds of which blow away in the wind. The difference is that a mold spore is much smaller; allowing the air to carry it anywhere there is air and air movement. A spore is not visible to the human eye but can be seen under a microscope. Mold Spores measure between 2 and 20 microns in diameter. Just to give you a reference point, a human hair is about 75 microns in diameter. Due to the size of mold spores, they travel wherever air currents flow. Even very healthy homes with no history of water incursions have some mold spores inside of them. Homes with mold actually growing have a much higher number of mold spores in them. This “mold spore loading,” in homes with mold constantly replicating, is the reason people have failed attempts at remediating mold themselves. They remove all visible molds: some wipe off walls with bleach, vinegar, or peroxide and they think the

problem is gone. However a few days later the mold is back. This too is the reason mold remediation is so expensive. In order for it to be successful, remediators are charged with removing all mold spores from the area. Mold requires moisture in order to grow. If any organic material in your home (wood furniture, wood framing, the paper on gypsum wall board or on insulation) should become wet, the material could grow mold. In light of this, the easiest way to avoid mold in your home is to keep everything dry. Water leaks and flooding are out of our control; however, there are ways houses get wet enough to grow mold which are in our control. Every winter we receive requests to check homes that have mold on exterior walls. When we check the homes we find that the exterior walls are very cold and condensation has collected on the wall. Just like a glass of ice cold water will collect condensation on it in the summer so will a cold wall in the winter. The result of the moisture — given time to replicate — is mold growing on the wall. To avoid this scenario keep the temperature in your home at least 67 degrees in the winter and check your exterior walls to see if they are cold. If they are cold turn the heat up or increase air flow on the walls. Warmer room temperatures help to keep the walls drier and to prevent moisture in the room from condensing on the wall. Additional air flow from a ceiling fan or turning on your furnace fan will help to warm and dry the walls. Another problem is placing furniture directly against exterior walls. Leaving a few inches between the furniture and the wall will encourage air flow, assisting to keep the wall warm and dry. Homes are also built with greater air tightness now than they were 40 years ago. As a result excess moisture needs to be removed from homes. Bathroom fans were not so important 40 years ago

because houses leaked enough air that they dried out. In newer homes, moisture will stay there unless it is exhausted outdoors. Every bathroom should have an exhaust fan wired directly to the light switch so that the excess humidity from showering can be removed from the home. Importantly, if you have an exhaust fan already installed, make sure that it exhausts outside, not in the attic. By blowing moisture into your attic you are simply moving your problem to a different location. Another source of excess moisture in homes is from laundry dryers venting inside the home. They make lint capture devices so people can have their dryer vent inside the home and some people like this idea because the dryer vents moist warm air. These vents are responsible for large amounts of moisture staying inside the home and most often are used in the winter when this excess moisture can condensate on the exterior walls of the home. Make sure your dryer vents outside. The final source of excess moisture is in crawl spaces. Crawl spaces are difficult to manage humidity in and the result is mold on the sub floor and floor joists. If you have a crawl space on your home the easiest way to manage humidity is to place a vapor barrier over all earth in the space. Earth gives up moisture at an incredible rate, allowing humidity in crawl spaces to get above the mold threshold of 60 percent relative humidity. Often even if there is a vapor barrier in the space it has holes and tears in it. Old vapor barriers in bad shape are only minimally better than no vapor barrier. Mold is much easier to keep out of your home than it is to remove once you have it. The State of Montana has a state Burial Trust which is an exceptional tool for funding your funeral expenses. The burial trust offers protection to the consumer. The funds are not held by the funeral home, they are held by a separate entity and are only distributed after the death occurs and the funeral home has provided the trust company with a death certificate to prove that the death occurred. It is a better funding tool than insurance because you actually reap the benefit of what you have placed in the trust, you don’t loose money and it is alsoMedicaid Compliant. With the Trust you are allowed to establish a NON- Guaranteed Trust and make payments to fund it and once it is paid for then you can roll it over into a Guaranteed Trust. Both contract types are irrevocable and meet the Montana Medicaid Requirements. This is advantageous for some people because they may not have access to the funds immediately and need to make payments. Once fully funded the trust will accrue interest monthly and the interest earned stays with the account and is used to off-set future price increases. • Social Security: When a loved one dies, dependents and survivors may be eligible for certain benefits such as death payments, survivor’s benefits and Medicare. Qualifications depend on several factors such as age, marital status, number of dependents and whether employment was under Social Security. Your Social Security account should be verified periodically to ensure contributions are posted. All benefits must be applied for since payments are not automatic. • Veterans Benefits: Honorablydischarged veterans are entitled to benefits that affect decisions about funeral arrangements. For example, veterans may qualify for a cemetery plot and burial allowances, a headstone and burial flag,
