Notebook: Northern looks for similair ending against Battlin' Bears n From Page 11 finishing strong. Of course, this year hasn’t been like other seasons for the Lights and beating the Bears Saturday will be no easy feat. RMC just knocked off Carroll College last Saturday in Helena, while the Lights lost 52-6 at Western. Rocky also brings the top passing attack in the conference to Blue Pony Stadium, and the best wide receiver in the NAIA in senior Andre McCullouch, who will be playing his last game as a Bear in what has been a brilliant four-year career. This season, McCullouch has benefitted from the emergence of quarterback Chase White, a former Shelby star, who started his career as a University of Montana recruit before mentoring under RMC great Bryce Baker the last two seasons. RMC also has a Northern connection at running back in junior tailback Kodee Varner. Both of Varner’s older brothers were standout defensive backs for the Lights, while the younger Varner went to FCS North Dakota before transferring to RMC. But while the Bears come to Havre feeling good about their win over Carroll, and the
fact they bested the Lights 46-0 back on Sept. 12 in Billings, it’s Northern’s senior day, and it’s the Lights’ last stand in 2015. And they’ll be fired up and excited for one more opportunity to make a statement before the season closes. “Our guys want to get a win,” MSU-N head coach Aaron Christensen said. “They want to find a way to come out of there with a victory.” Top Awards This being the final Frontier Conference Notebook of the season, it’s always fun to see how the Frontier Conference postseason honors might shake out. The Frontier’s Offensive MVP is probably a no-brainer at this point, as Tech junior running back Nolan Saraceni has put together an incredible season. Despite missing two games, Saraceni has racked up 1,390 yards and is averaging 174 yards per outing. If Saraceni wins the honor, he’ll be the first nonquarterback to win it in three years. Other offensive standouts this season in-
clude MSU-N’s Zach McKinley, who needs just 25 yards against RMC to get to 1,000 for the third year in a row, while McCullouch has been the top receiver in the Frontier all season. EOU quarterback Zach Bartlow leads the Frontier in total offense, RMC’s White is the top passer and EOU running back Jase Billingsley leads the league in all-purpose yardage. The Defensive Player of the Year honor is a little more up for grabs. UM-Western’s Reno Ward has had a huge season with his 13.5 sacks and 21.5 tackles for loss, both tops in the Frontier. But EOU linebacker Gary Posten has had another monster season, with 126 tackles. Carroll safety James Dowgin, Northern defensive end Tyler Craig and Western linebackers A.J. Wilson and Joe Coker are also in the discussion for best defensive player in the Frontier. The discussion for who will be Coach of the Year is now officially over. There’s no question Tech head man Chuck Morrell is deserving of the honor, as Tech has pulled off one of the biggest one-year turnarounds in league history. Western head man B.J. Rob-
ertson also dserves the honor for what he’s done with the Bulldogs, but there’s no doubt, Morrell’s quick turnaround in Butte is something very special. Honors Tech’s Clay Cavander is the Frontier Offensive Player of the Week. In then No. 9 Montana Tech’s 21-17 upset road win over then No. 1 Southern Oregon, Cavender rushed for 129 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries. He caught one pass for a touchdown and was 2-of-3 passing for 12 yards. Western’s Ward was named Defensive Player of the Week. In then No. 13 Montana Western’s 52-6 conference win over Montana State-Northern, Ward recorded 11 unassisted tackles, two assisted tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss (-29) and 2.5 sacks. Western’s Seth Mason was named Special Team’s Player of the Week. In then No. 13 Montana Western’s 52-6 conference win over Montana State-Northern, Mason kicked 7 of 7 P.A.T.’s and was 1 of 1 in field goals (27 yards).
Havre Daily News/Roger Miller MSU-Northern's Zach McKinley runs towards Eastern Oregon linebacker Gary Posten during a Frontier Conference football game last month at Blue Pony Stadium. McKinley is second in the Frontier in rushing and is closing in on another 1,000-yard season. The Lights finish their season Saturday against RMC at home.

Senior Leadership
Northern's senior class of just four will have a lasting impact on the Lights for years to come George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor gferguson@havredailynews.com
The Montana State University-Northern Lights are an extremely young football team. And in a rebuilding year, having only four seniors on the entire roster makes the Lights even younger and more inexperienced. Yet, those four seniors are also a big reason why the Lights have marched forward through one of the most difficult seasons in the program’s history. It’s the leadership of those four seniors that has helped the lights
pick themselves up time and time again throughout a season of difficult losses and challenging moments of adversity. Those four seniors, captain and cornerback Malcolm Manuel, starting offensive lineman Matt McKeen, wide receiver Logan Mayernik and defensive tackle Jefferson Aumua, will play their final game of their Northern careers on Saturday when the Lights take on Rocky Mountain College inside Blue Pony Stadium. Of course, those seniors, and the Lights are hoping to end this season on a high note, and nothing would do that more than to beat RMC Saturday. But, the impact that this tiny MSU-N senior class will have had, and has had on the program will be felt for many years to come – regardless of what happens against the Battlin’ Bears this Saturday. “I’ve definitely tried to play every play this season like it’s my last, and give this team everything I have,” said McKeen, who has been at Northern for five years. “I have
tried to be a good example and a good leader to the younger guys. And I feel like this young crew we have, they have as much potential as I’ve ever seen in football. A lot of these guys, if they stick with it, are going to be amazing football players. But even with this unsuccessful season, I’ve had a blast, and so have the younger guys.” Like McKeen, Manuel has also taken upon himself to help Northern build for the future. And as much as he’s wanted to win every game, the star cornerback has also done his part to make sure the Lights are better off in the future.

Frontier title comes down to the end George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor gferguson@havredailynews.com A three-way tie for the Frontier Conference championship? Yes, it’s entirely possible that could happen. But, not if the Montana Tech Orediggers have anything to say about it. Tech put itself in position to win the conference title outright this Saturday by beating No.1-ranked Southern Oregon 21-17 last Saturday in Ashland, Oregon. In what was billed as the NAIA Game of the Week, Tech’s stingy defense put the brakes on an SOU offense that had been averaging nearly 50 points per game over its last three. The Orediggers also snapped a seven-game SOU win streak in the process, and prevented the Raiders for winning the Frontier title outright, as well as possibly garnering the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NAIA playoffs. And with the win, Tech and head
coach Chuck Morrell have gone from worst to first in one season. The Orediggers can do no worse than a share of the league title, and that comes just one year after winning a single game and finishing last in the conference. So, this Saturday will be an exciting one, and that’s how the final weekend of the regular season should be. The Orediggers are home to face arch rival UMWestern in what will be billed as the NAIA Game of the Week as well. Western demolished Montana State University-Northern last Saturday night in Dillon, which means the 7-2 Bulldogs can share the Frontier title with an upset at Tech. The game is a meeting of the top two defenses in the league, and two of the best
in the NAIA, so don’t expect a ton of points, and expect the game to come right down to the end. While a Tech win over Western would lock up the league title, and a top four seed in the playoffs for the Orediggers, SOU will be hoping Western beats Tech in Alumni Coliseum. With a Western win, and a win of their own at improving Eastern Oregon, the Raiders would share the Frontier title with both the Orediggers and Bulldogs, and likely all three teams would make the playoffs. If Western and SOU both lose this Saturday, both teams will be on the playoff bubble. Trying for a Repeat

MSU-Northern Rewind
Bulldogs bite Lights yet again MSU-N Northern stifled by daunting UM-Western defense in Dillon
George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor gferguson@havredailynews.com There have a been a lot of rough days for the Montana State University-Northern Lights football team this season and, now, one rough night, too. Under the lights of Vigilante Stadium Saturday night in Dillon, Northern was sent to its 10th straight loss as the Lights were dominated by No. 13 UM-Western, 52-6. The loss dropped MSU-N to 0-9 in the Frontier Conference, while Western kept its hopes of sharing the Frontier title alive. A difficult start once again doomed the Lights as Western reeled of 31 unanswered points in the first half. Western put together a solid opening drive, with J.D. Ferris hitting Matt Lickfold for a score with 10 minutes left in the first stanza. Hunter Thomsen added a two-yard touchdown run with five minutes to go in the period to up the score to 14-0. The MSU-N defense did well to limit the Bulldogs on the ground, but Western ended up passing for 327 yards between Ferris and Bradley Smith. Smith connected with Matt Fuhrman early in the second period to add to the lead, while Sam Rutherford scored a 23-yard rushing touchdown and Seth Mason added a 22-yard field goal to end the first half. For the second time this season, the stout Bulldog defense also kept the Lights out of the endzone. Northern’s lone points would come on a 46-yard interception return by Logan Sprouse in the third quarter. After that, Western tacked on three more scores, a Smith pass to Tyler Murray in the third, another to Melvin Walser in the fourth, and a 13-yard TD run by Dylan Kramer. Offensively, Western, which improved to 7-2, ran up 439 yards on the Lights. Northern did hold Rutherford to just 55 yards on seven carries, and the Bulldogs only had 129 yards rushing. Jon McGinnis led the Lights with seven tackles, while Tyler Craig had six stops and three tackles for loss, and Garrett Jericoff added six stops as well. But, as much as the Lights hung tough on defense, the Western defense was too good. The Bulldogs held Zach McKinley to a mere 56 yards on 20 carries. Jess Krahn finished the game 21-of-38 for 149 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. He was sacked four times. Jake Messerly caught three passes for 40 yards, while Mario Gobbato caught a game-high six for 29 yards. Jett Robertson, Seth Roem-

Seniors: MSU-N's small senior class has made a big difference
Seniors: Northern seniors will be honored before Saturday's finale

“That’s the main reason a lot of us older guys stuck it through,” Manuel said. “It’s really important to be leaders this season because a lot of these younger guys look up to us, and if we can get through what we have gone through this season, than the younger guys know they can do the same thing. I know they think they have a bright future here, and I feel like they do. This team was very young and inexperienced this season, but when I look back on this season in a couple of years, and see where this team is then, it will be a good feeling knowing I helped them get there.” Indeed, Northern’s four seniors have certainly led the way. Manuel
has had a strong senior campaign, with 35 tackles, two interceptions, two tackles for loss and a blocked kick that he returned for a safety against UM-Western back in September. McKeen has been a veteran anchor on a young offensive line that has had injury problems throughout the season, while Mayernik, a native of Centerville, who has been with the Lights for four years, has caught three passes in what has been a season that’s he’s had to deal with injuries as well. Aumua has also been in on running-stopping and goal line situations for the Lights this season defense.
seniors, along with graduate assistant Dylan Murphy, who would have been a senior as well this season if he could have played on the offensive line, have done on the field, it’s as much what they’ve done behind the scenes that will matter most when the season comes to an end. “We’ve had really good senior leadership on this team,” said Northern head coach Aaron Christensen. “And with a young team, that’s very important.” All four seniors are indeed talented football players, but it has been their leadership, their maturity, and how they’ve handled the adversity
n See Seniors Page 7
But, it isn’t just what the four
of such a daunting season, that all four of them are most proud of, and it’s why they’ll look back on their careers, and even this season, with a lot of fondess. And, it’s why all four them are excited to play one last football game in a Lights’ uniform on Saturday afternoon. “It’s a big game for all of us,” Manuel said. “Not just for the seniors
but for all of us. Because we’re rebuilding, getting this last win would be big, especially for the guys coming back next year. So for us, myself, Matt, Logan and Jeff, we’ve been playing this sport for a long time and we’re going to just go leave it out there on the field. We’ve been talking about that the last couple weeks, as seniors, we’re going to just go give it everything we have and leave it all
out there on Saturday. “I’ve been playing this sport for a long time,” added McKeen. “This is my 15th year of competitive football and my fifth year here. It’s been a rough season, but even during the rough times, I’ve tried to have the best attitude possible and have just tried to enjoy every minute of it. In the blink of an eye, five years went by super fast. And I’ve had a lot of fun and a lot of memories I’ll cherish for the rest of my life with all these great guys.” Northern's senior class will be honored before Saturday's game against Rocky Mountain College. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at Blue Pony Stadium.
Havre Daily News/Roger Miller Montana State University-Northern senior tackle Jefferson Aumua will play his final game of his Northern career Saturday when the Lights host RMC at Blue Pony Stadium. Aumua came to Northern from a junior college in California, and has become part of a small, but special MSU-N senior class.
Havre Daily News/Roger Miller Montana State University-Northern defensive back Malcolm Manuel has been a steady influence on a young Northern team this season. Manuel is a team captain and just one of four Northern seniors playing in their final game, when the Lights take on Rocky Mountain College saturday in Havre. Manuel has had a strong senior campaign, with 35 tackles, two interceptions, two tackles for loss and a blocked kick that he returned for a safety against UM-Western back in September.
Havre Daily News/Roger Miller Montana State University-Northern senior Logan Mayernik has spent the last four years as a Lights' wide receiver. He is part of a senior class that includes just four total player on the 2015 Lights' roster. But, those four have had a huge impact on the Lights' growth through what has been a difficult season on the gridiron. Mayernik, a native of Centerville, will play his final game as a Light when they host Rocky Mountain College Saturday at Blue Pony Stadium. All four seniors are indeed talented football players, but it has been their leadership off the field that has been benefitted the Lights most.
